      The winner, is BOTH the trackpad & whatever mouse you choose. Put the Magic Trackpad to the left of your keyboard & use your left hand for those gestures while you use your mouse to the right of your keyboard, for the ultimate setup 😎
      & vice versa if you’re left(weird)-handed ;)

    Thanks for the comparison video.
    I use a MacBook Air M1 and a mechanical keyboard (just cause i'm obsessed with the clicky sound) so I am searching for my "perfect" mouse.
    I fell in love with MacBook's trackpad that I can't go back to using a mouse (personal preference). Tried using a Logitech pebble and it didn't work for me.
    Since I use a mechanical keyboard, I've been thinking of buying either the Magic Mouse or the trackpad for months now, I'm just so torn! Good thing I found your video and I have finally decided to go with a trackpad.
    Thank you for sharing your honest review and thoughts!

      A lot of those mechanical keyboards are really cool - been seeing a lot of UA-camrs who use them. Would love to take one for a test drive one of these days - maybe one of those companies will send one to me one day. Until then, I'll stick with my Apple Magic Keyboard.
      I think you made the right choice (even if you're not doing video editing). The Magic Trackpad is awesome and since you may be accustomed to using it with your MacBook Air, it's natural to incorporate a standalone trackpad into your workflow. And if you enable three-finger drag? Dang. Game changer.
      Thanks for watching my vid (and if you purchased or intend to purchase using my link, THANK YOU! Great way to support the channel since it's an affiliate link).

    Matthew, 1) I’ve been a regular and very efficient (I think) trackpad user on the laptop the go for two decades and a mouse user, the last several years the latest Magic Mouse, in the studio. It’s strange, but while I know the gestures with the Magic Trackpad, I have hard time being as accurate and (feel) quick with it as I am with the Magic Mouse. I have both and again gave up with the trackpad last week, it’s just not jiving 100%. I also want to get into it so I can go between them every other day or week so my hand gets a break, or different angle and movement. Also, your way of using the iPad for shortcuts is great, I’ve got and actual Stream Deck (I stream as well) and letting go of the mouse is WAY more disruptive than lifting a finger to push (or even less for iPad tap I’d think) from the trackpad.
    2) Do you know of a command that’d ‘zoom to selected’? There’s the zoom all the way out and incremental zoom in, but it’d be hugely beneficial to be able to select a clip, or several, and hit a button to get the selected area filling the timeline. I use that all the time in audio editing.
    3) Do you use CommandPost? (CommandPost.io) I’m just looking into it, but seems there are numerous missing FCP commands / features covered + tons other stuff, and you can use it with Stream Deck and other controllers to creat shortcuts and workflows.

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks for watching! And I appreciate the thoughtful feedback on your unique experience using the Trackpad and Magic Mouse. I have definitely been hearing that there is a feeling that being precise with the Mouse is one of its biggest benefits. And I completely agree that the Trackpad isn't for everyone - for some, it just doesn't connect to their way of working. One question: do you have Three-Finger Drag enabled? I find that trying to click with my thumb and move stuff around with my index finger is beyond inefficient - but since I enabled three-finger drag I *never* have difficult using the creativity apps I use most frequently - Final Cut Pro, Affinity Designer/Publisher, and Photos. If Three-Finger Drag is enabled in your workflow and you're still bumping up against the precision factor, then I completely agree that it's just not the right tool for the job for you. Keep crushing it - as you obviously are 😎 - with the Magic Mouse.
      As far as the Stream Deck goes - I hear you with moving from the Mouse to the Stream Deck, even if it's positioned near your mouse. I should give editing a try with the Magic Mouse to see how much more difficult it is to hit the buttons of the Stream Deck when using the mouse.
      As far as zooming goes .... I have *exactly* what you're looking for, and I only learned this trick a couple months ago. Here's what you do:
      Press and hold the Z key to activate the Zoom tool (now holding it is key, and I'll explain in a moment) and then use your Mouse to click and drag a rectangle in the space ABOVE the area of your timeline you want to zoom in on. The timeline will snap quickly to zoom into the area that spans the rectangle you just drew. And when you release the Z key, FCP will revert back to the tool you were last using (which is most likely the Selection tool - versus the Position tool, for example, or the Blade tool). If you find yourself pressing Z and then releasing it before you draw your rectangle to zoom in, you'll have to hit the A key to get back to the Selection tool (or B for Blade or P for Position or T for Trim).
      3. I have Command Post on my list of apps to download. I just got Better Touch Tool and am figuring that out for my Trackpad (hoping to do a video about it), but tonight I'm going to kick back after the Super Bowl and check out some vids on Command Post for sure. Definitely want to see how I can implement it with my Stream Deck, especially if I can program a few things in FCP that *don't* have keyboard shortcuts (stuff in the menus in the upper left, for example).
      Definitely look into getting Stream Deck mobile on an iPad. The app is made for the iPhone only - as far as resolution goes - so if you use it on a larger iPad with a Retina display, the app doesn't look very crisp and sharp. I use it on an iPad Mini 2 so the app still looks nice since the resolution isn't very high on. And I went for the iPad version of Stream Deck because I had a suspicion that the physical buttons would be a bit more difficult to press, and I want the instant responsiveness of the iPad Mini. I recently installed a Mob Armor magnet mount for the iPad so I could get a better angle for it and so it wouldn't be at risk of falling backward when using the Smart Cover. I digress! Hope the Zoom info helps! It certainly has helped my workflow, and I can't believe I didn't know about years ago!

    • @darude
      @darude 3 роки тому

      Duuude, I SWEAR I did the rectangle thing by accident the other day (so prob was too quick trying to do something else while zooming) and then couldn’t make it happen again, then thought I was dreaming, as I use “rubberband zoom” (a modifier + mouse drag) in Logic all the time in addition to actual ‘zoom to selected’ kc 😂🤦🏻‍♂️🤯 If that works like I gather from your description, it’ll be a tenfold productivity jump for me! THANKS!
      Don’t mind me, prep for & enjoy the super bowl... but one more thing I thought about? If I edited out all the ummms & ammms (and I kinda do), there an f-ton of twitchy jump cuts in my videos. Like not necessarily the cool zoom in 120% for punctuation... It comes from me thinking as I speak and while it’s probably just about fine in normal conversation or when, say, live streaming, it’s IMO slow and could be distracting in an edited video (the ummms), but so can the cuts. When I use a prompter & a script, I feel like you can so clearly see I’m reading, and when I use keywords only, then it’s back to “thinking as I speak”. You ever struggle with this? Any tips, other than “know your shit and practice speaking”? ;)

    • @darude
      @darude 3 роки тому

      So indeed, it works as you described, it's not that I doubted that (and I'm actually now sure I did accidentally do it earlier), but in FCP vs. Logic there's a crucial difference: While it works beautifully to zoom in to the area you want to, in Logic you then use the same modifier (held, if you want to come right back, or press again later, after and edit, for eg.) and click on an empty arrangement spot, the background, and it zooms you back to the level you were before. Seems in FCP you need to now use a different kc (like add shift+Z) to zoom back out and it won't go to the same "depth" you were before. It's of course a matter of getting used to, but the "I'll just peek in here right quick" workflow of nearly 20 years in Logic is quite deep ingrained, so I wish they'd add that, or that for eg. Command Post would help there. (Looking into it)

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, the old teleprompter is a tough one. I have started using my teleprompter in a few vids for two reasons: the script I write can be used on Medium.com and my videos are much more focused, easy to understand, and smoother. I have produced a lot content for clients using a teleprompter so that, combined with my acting training from acting school, has helped me A LOT with the prompter. Now I'm not a master at it by any means, but when I edit my vids done with the prompter, I feel that, overall, the information is just more pleasant to digest for the viewer. Of course, when I do my tutorials vids where I'm sitting in the edit bay, I will most likely keep those more "off the cuff" and freestyle them. I think maybe you just need to be a little less strict with your ums and ahhs when editing. If cutting one out makes for a rougher, choppier edit, leave it in. A few here and there isn't going to bother anyone while having the rhythm of your cuts feel off to the viewer will. Something else you can do is try to cover the cuts that are fast or choppy with more b-roll. It adds more work to your vids, but it can make for the smoothest experience overall for your viewers to have your ums/ahhh gone but then b-roll to cover the quick cuts of your a-roll. I'm incorporating more and more b-roll in my vids where I'm speaking to the camera in that freestyle/improv manner.

    • @matthewTobrien

      Great to know the subtle differences between how Logic Pro handles that kind of zoom versus Final Cut. Use the "Provide Final Cut Pro Feedback" option in the "Final Cut Pro" upper left menu in FCP to tell Apple to enhance the Zoom tool by making it similar to Logic Pro. There have to be a TON of musicians who use Logic AND FCP for UA-cam and other content creation, and it only makes sense to find overlap between the apps where appropriate. I use the Feedback option often.

    I love the Magic Mouse 2, especially for scrolling in the timeline. Have an older Apple Trackpad that I haven’t used in a few years, but never liked the angle on it. Tried the Logitech last year and despised it (big, clunky, horrible scrolling, and yes, really loud clicking). Might have to give the Magic Trackpad a try at some point.

    Wanted to add, the trackpad gestures are amazing outside of FCP too, I find myself naturally scrolling wherever the pointer happens to be (a picture, a webpage window, emails scroll-list, etc) without having to focus-click or tap on said windows... it truly works.
    I have settled to using both a mouse and the Trackpad after seeing one video from the subtlecinematics guy (RoyalzProduction now I think?) where he was wooshing through his timeline with both: right hand mouse for precision clicking/dragging/creating-masks/etc and left hand trackpad for more gestures based navigation, in the middle between the two a magic keyboard.
    So, for me, the poll choice would have been “both”. Not a Magic Mouse though, it’s ergonomically impossible for me sadly, I use a wired Logitech MX-518 style successors.
    Granted it takes some time to get used to do the gestures with the left hand but since it’s not so much about precision it’s possible to get used to it quickly.

I recently replaced my Magic Keyboard with the Magic Keyboard with TouchID and the TouchID feature alone made it beyond worth the $149 price tag. I like that it's relatively quiet in comparison to some of the big, chunky mechanical keyboards so many UA-camrs seem to love.

    This is such a helpful and well produced video thank you! I’m trying to decide when purchasing the m1 iMac whether to go for a Magic Trackpad with a third party Bluetooth mouse or the magic trackpad with the Magic Mouse. I tried out the Magic Mouse and I liked it’s special features it has over 'normal' mice, but I wasn’t sure if all of that would be unnecessary if I was primarily using the trackpad. Would you say if I am going to be using a mouse as well as the trackpad anyway if you think the Magic Mouse is worth it, or would a third party mouse I already use would be enough please? ☺️

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the kind words! And glad my vid has been helpful. If the Magic Trackpad is going to be your daily driver and a mouse would fill in under only under very specific situations, think about what those situations are going to be: simple navigation of docs, the web, messages? Or a tool for more precise work in Photoshop or 3D software or After Effects? If you only need a mouse on occasion for the simplest of tasks, perhaps go with the Magic Mouse. If you need a mouse as a tool for more precise, intensive apps consider something like a Logitech MX Master. I think they’re better ergonomically, they have programmable buttons, and they work well with the higher end creative apps.
      You know my issues with the clicking - for the creative software I use daily (FCP, Photos, Affinity Designer), the Magic Trackpad 2 can handle it all. Let me know if that helps!

    I wanted to add one more thing about the Mac trackpads. Because there's no mechanical action inside and the click is actually just haptic feedback, you can press anywhere on the trackpad surface and get a good, solid feeling click. A click on the corners feels that same as if you clicked in the center. With my PC trackpad, it's a mechanical action, and if I press towards the corners or edges, the click feels differently and sometimes may not click at all.

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  3 роки тому

      Exactly! Which is why I love the Magic Trackpad 2. It's always strange when I'm working on my 2013 MacBook Pro because the Trackpad does have the physical clicking (vs haptic). I can't wait for M1 (or M1X) 16" MacBook Pros to come out so I can finally update this nearly 8 yr old laptop (that I'm using right now)!

    Hi Matthew. Great video! I have both a Magic Mouse & Magic Trackpad and find myself using the trackpad 99% of the time. The one thing I don't like it for is dragging and dropping lots of files between folders. I don't have my sensitivity super high and sometimes run out of trackpad surface before I reach the destination of where I want to drop the files, but that usually happens when I have small sized folders on opposite sides of the screen and forgot to move them closer tougher before starting my drag. Overall, the trackpad is much more powerful, and when I'm using my laptop by itself, the gestures are identical, so I don't have to remember anything new. Interestingly, I also have a PC laptop and can't stand its trackpad. The surface has a "sticky" feel, and sliding my finger around isn't a smooth experience.

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks for watching, Mark! Regarding dragging and dropping, do you have Three-Finger Drag enabled? If you do, you can easily snag a bunch of files and drag them using the Trackpad...and you won't run out of real estate on the Trackpad because you can lift your fingers where they are (and keep dragging) without losing/dropping the files you're dragging. I have three monitors in my edit bay, and I drag files from Finder (on the far right monitor) over to FCP's Event Browser (on the far left side of my far left monitor) all the time with no trouble.
      And I hear you about the PC trackpads - whenever I find myself helping my in-laws or family members who have non-Macs, I try to hide my disgust at how unpleasant they are. Oh well.... Let me know if you're able to try Three-Finger Drag with my way of clicking and dragging files. 🙌🏻🤘🏻

      @@matthewTobrien THANK YOU!! I didn't know about that feature. The dragging issue seems to happen about every 2 out of 3 times I'm moving a bunch of files, and I have to reach over with my left hand to "hold" the trackpad down while repositioning my fingers. This will be a huge help.

Also, in FCP with Command Post, I've enabled Option + mouse scroll to zoom in and out. Works for me. Though the Magic Mouse 2 was terribly un ergonomic without a mouse pad with wrist rest. • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  3 роки тому

      Appreciate the kind words! $3k/month would be crazy! Just imagine the content I could create..... 😋 First, it's always difficult to use a new input device because our muscle memory and efficiency is so connected to our current input devices. It was definitely a bit of a transition going from the Magic Mouse to the Magic Trackpad, but I made sure to print off ALL the gestures you can do with the Magic Trackpad so that I could always refer to it as I transitioned. It took maybe a week or two for it all to be second nature, and I never went back to the mouse. I certainly love the idea of the Logitech MX mice because of the programmable buttons! And, to answer your question, you can absolutely use both input devices. In the comments for this video, several viewers mention how they use both - the mouse on the right and the trackpad on the left, for example. Another way to try to get really good with the Magic Trackpad is to use it on your laptop (if you have a MacBook), especially with all the great gestures for FCP and macOS. Let me know if you end up trying the Magic Trackpad in your workflow!

However if I’m trying to edit photos in photoshop I just find it easier for me to use a mouse for more precise control doing things like trying to make selections and using most of the tools. That’s why I made the video about editing in Final Cut (not trying to be snarky) - I knew that any photo editors watching would point out the precision of a mouse or Wacom tablet, and I don’t disagree. But for FCP I don’t think you need that kind of precision often enough to use a mouse as your main input device. I keep one handy in case I’m doing any complex masking for long stretches of time but even then it almost never comes up that I need to use it. 🖱

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  3 роки тому +1

      I actually think it's much easier to drag, especially over long distances (if you use multiple monitors especially). With the mouse you have to lift it off the surface it's on whereas with three-finger drag you can lift your fingers as many times as you need to. It's hard to explain, but once you get the hang of it it works really, really well. And, no, I personally experience no finger or hand fatigue.

    I’ve been using only mac desktop with magic mouse, so I’ve never experienced mac trackpad. I’m deciding between Logitech MX3 and Magic Trackpad. How is the accuracy scrolling and scrubbing around a clip and timeline on trackpad? I mainly use Final Cut, Lightroom, and Photoshop.

      @matthewTobrien  3 роки тому

      I personally feel that the Magic Trackpad 2 is incredibly accurate. I have heard from some power users who have always used a mouse that the trackpad doesn't feel as accurate. I feel this may be the case for things like After Effects, Photoshop, etc. but that hasn't been my experience with Final Cut Pro. With all the gestures you can use with the Magic Trackpad 2 in Final Cut Pro specifically, it makes it a no-brainer in my opinion.
      Again, my biggest issue with the Logitech MX mice is the loud clicking sound. I've simply gotten too used to the silence of the trackpad and that constant clicking sound drives me nuts. Crazy, sure. But that's just how it is for me.

    For anyone who likes using the trackpad, you should check out an app called B.T.T (Better Touch Tool). I have no affiliation with them, i just thinks its an awesome app. It lets you set different profiles for each program you use and completely customise all the gestures on the trackpad way more than apple lets you aswell as adds a bunch of new gestures or even create your own. In fact it lets you customise pretty much all your peripherals but i only use it for the trackpad so can only speak to that. Its pretty cheap and its not perfect but i now have it set up so i can basically do an entire rough edit, without touching the keyboard, using just the trackpad and gestures. Can be a bit tricky remembering all the gestures at first but once you get used to it and build the muscle memory its awesome.

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  2 роки тому

      Are you using three-finger drag or traditional trackpad click + hold with your thumb and drag with your index finger? Either way, you can lift your dragging finger(s) repeatedly to drag long distances. You don’t have to keep your fingertip(s) in constant contact with the surface of the trackpad. It’s tricky to get used to but once you do you’ll love the trackpad even more.
      With the Magic Mouse, you have to have Smart Zoom enabled in System Preferences to be able to zoom out of your timeline in FCP with a one-finger double-tap. Something I thought I did an exhaustive search to determine before I made my video…only to find out I was wrong.
