Making a project in Blender that you truly feel enthusastic about is the best feeling in the world, especially when the result is on par with your expectations.
I'm blown away, When you first show the shot i was thinking we are being shown a shot from the movie then we will see the work you are doing. Nope that was your shot and it is incredible. I have nothing but compliments for you.
Your videos are always such a joy to watch! Not only for the beautiful VFX work and the fact I learn something new every time, but also the narration and pacing is incredible. Keep it up, man :)
Althought I went into the character and prop animation path, I still find lots of joy when doing some VFX work. This shot was amazing! Specially the flight off scene when the camera focus into the wheel.
This looks really great! One thing that took me out of it for a shot was the takeoff roll of the jet. Realistically, it should've been launching from one of those steam catapults, and it should've been a very violent experience from the POV of a mounted camera. I point that out because I feel like it's a pretty big "feel" thing for the genre, and I know that it's the kind of specific thing that a much larger-than-you-might-expect group of people are aware of. But literally everything else makes a great sequence that conveys the perfect Top Gun energy!
Thanks! That one is just a few jpegs I downloaded from textures.com that I turned into a matte painting. I did use an HDRI on the previous shot as the camera move was quite big. But all the other shots were just normal 8 bit images. It was quite hard to push them without breaking them to be honest 😅
I'm inspired by what you can achieve in Blender, even though I'm just getting into it again and for 3D printing rather that video at this stage. Absolutely 100% agree with the high topology from the outset, I keep forgetting though and subsurface modifiers don't count when you're exporting an .STL as they're only a visual cheat unfortunately, so end up having to redo, doh!
I would have loved to see the render settings. I'm currently struggling to get my youtube uploads to look like the same as my exported file. I have tried just about every render setting, but even on 4K I can't get it to look like your intro. It looks amazing!! Both H.264/65 1080p on UA-cam looks just like 360 on Vimeo. It's insane. I also tried Cineform and DNxHR.. neither fixed the issues on youtube. So yeah, Id love to get to know your final export settings if possible! :)
I used to render to h.264 from resolve with more or less default settings. I now use h.265 but even using h.264 it still looked good. My settings now are a 3840x2160 timeline rendered out in Rec709 gamma 2.4 to an h.265 move file. Hope that helps!
It's an HDRI but I used it in Nuke so I had a bit more control. So the renders had no sky and then I brought the camera into nuke and put the HDRI on a massive sphere and rendered it through the camera with Nuke's 3D system. That way I could control it a lot easier and then comp the CG on top
I almost always do it from Blender. 3D motionblur is always better if you have the luxury of rendering it. Also, my GPU is a lot more powerful than my CPU. So rendering it in 3D makes comping a lot lighter where it could become a bottleneck for speed if I start adding loads of comp motion blur etc. Both ways have their uses but that's how I do mine :)
Amazing… I will learn a lot from this😊 Just one question… At the beginning, why are the planes going down into the hangar of the carrier? Instead of exiting to the deck above to lift off? Different planes?
Thank you! Yeah they're different planes but I agree the context is a bit odd 🤣 basically there's a really cool shot in the film where they reveal like that. Slowly coming down the lift. But then I didn't want to make a load of shots of people getting in them and then going back up. Would have taken way too long. So I just did a jump cut like it was more of a montage 🤣
@@AlfieVaughan perfectly understandable 😉👍 The 1st Top Gun is one of my top 3 of all time, mostly because I was an impressionable 10 years old😅 Next… you can tackle water sim with The movie “the Hunt for the Red October” when the sub “flies” out of the water 😝🫡
Haha thank you! I'm moving away from step by step tutorials a bit as this format tends to be better received on UA-cam compared to my slower, more detailed videos. You might find what you're looking for if you go back through some of my videos from the last year or so. I've got some more in depth ones
That's so cool, I'm trying to make a similar scene but for a military exercise with a French plane the Rafale, and it takes so long to model (even if I like it), do you have any advice to do the Udims ?
Amazing work.! When you get too the point, where you are in doubt, regarding the amount of vfx. The level of realism is huge ! :O I could not help thinking, how it would be, if you dived in too the film "Gravity" maybe the scene with the spacejunk collision :) It is truely awesome too see your breakdowns ! Thanks a lot
Thank you so much! Yes sometimes in the middle I feel like I lose momentum a bit. That's why I like to render the v001s and get a good idea of how it's all coming together. It helps because I can see it all working which makes me realise I'm nearly done but also shows bits that could be improved. Thanks for the Gravity suggestion! I have a "space" scene on my list of videos I'd like to tackle. I'll definitely give it a go :)
Although the effort is much appreciated, It would've made more sense if an F/A-18 or even the F-14 was taking off from the carrier as well as reworking the takeoff animation as carrier based aircraft attach to a catapult that assures more accelleration and shorter take off distances. agin on aTechnical level this was very good just noting some details that grab the attention of a flight enthusiast...That if you don't mind.
Always good to get feedback! I appreciate it. The honest truth is I know nothing about planes so wouldn't know what is and isn't technically correct. All I know how to do is make it look cool 🤣
It was comped using a full nuke license which means it can be opened in non-commercial too :) you just can't go the other way (.nknc files can't be opened in a full license)
No, the F/A-18 Hornet or the F-35C are the carrier fighter jets. They have the required tail hook and stronger landing gear to handle a carrier landing.
Haha thanks very much! I've got a whole playlist of nuke tutorials on my channel and 2 of them focus on compositing 3D renders. Worth checking out! I think it's what you're looking for 👍
The first thing I would do is research what kind of jet can take off from an aircraft carrier. The jet you chose was a F-16. An Air Force jet. Would not be able to take off or land from an aircraft carrier. Maybe do it with a Navy F-18 next time.
Except.... you lowered the jets to the storage level of the aircraft carrier and then showed them on top firing up... Also, those are F-16's which are not carrier based Naval aircraft... You want F-14 Tomcats for the Navy and an aircraft carrier!
Haha yeah. They're not really meant to be the same planes taking off as going down the lift. It's more of a montage. I just liked that shot 🤣 I also know nothing about planes so not surprised the details are wrong
The first shot doesn't look as good as the others; the light that shines through looks fake and the jets look like they're made of plastic. The camera shake on the second shot looks artificial. Otherwise good.
It winds me up when people just comment picking things apart all the time. You do it in everything you comment. Personally, if I was going to suggest some improvements to someone else's work, I would start by saying something nice. Instead of slating it and then tacking "otherwise good" on the end. But that's just me...
It's not the quantity. It's that all of YOUR comments are always so negative. As you pointed out, everyone else is nice. It's not that I can't hack feedback. I just don't see why everything you comment is phrased so brutally... Just say "I liked this but thought this could have used some work." It's not hard to be nice
You keep saying helli carrier... And can't see anyone pointing this out, so tilting, you are cancled... Have watch to much marvel apparently.... AIRCRAFT CARRIER!!! Cause you know... It CARRIES AIRCRAFTS!
