Since the movie is announced I'm excited to see who will do the vfx like this creator movie and i feel like you are the first one who did this really enjoyed this one!
You do absolutely excellent videos. Not just the great VFX, but your explanation tutorials are so informative. Keep it up. COngratulations on a great channel.
Your nuke tutorials are really good. especially your basic compositing once, I used to do my 3D compositing After Effects but I recently switched to a Nuke your channel has been a support system in my Nuke journey. I used to find nuke very intimidating thanks to you, you made it easier
That's great to hear! I'm glad my videos have been helpful. The learning curve is quite steep when you make the switch but it starts getting easier after a while :)
im bummed i havent found your channel earlier. This tutorial is great for building skills and not copy-pasta a project that only proves you took the tutorial. Keep these coming!
Fascinating breakdown of the single most shot imporant shot technique used throughout the film. i imagine the challenges of creating so many complex comp shots for this movie 🤣🤣🤣
Happy to have found someone who is using Blender with a more "industry standard" workflow. I used your ACES videos a lot while setting up my pipeline between Blender and After Effects. Great stuff with this video, I might have to give this type of effect a shot when I actually have some free time lol
Thank you! It took me ages to figure it all out but once you have a good workflow it makes such a massive difference to the quality of content you can create. Worth the time spent!
Yeah the main CG pipeline is Houdini and Maya. I'm the only one the really uses Blender. Sometimes we use it for niche tasks. Like recently we used it to ingest some Google maps geometry from the Open Street Maps add-on for Blender
I've been out of VFX for a couple of years due to illness but this video has really inspired me to reinstall Nuke Studio and get back up to speed with my passion:)
So much work and thought has gone into the making of this vid. Thx 4 sharing ur technique and what could be achieved w Blender 4 any aspiring VFX artist! Bravo!
I really should start using more 3D projections inside Nuke 😪. Also, great touch on the slight shadow along the edge of the 3D that’s in contact with your face!
Love it! The only part that didn’t hold up well was the neck flap which had the mask moving around a bit too much. Other than that, amazing job! I especially loved the bit about adding the beard hairs on top to make the seam more natural on the jawline. Great attention to detail there!
Thanks! Yeah I totally agree. I wish I'd done it as a 3d holdout so it looked better but I'd sort of run out of time to spend making this video and just needed to get it out 🤣
Thanks! Yes it's a great film. One of the best I've seen in a while. Especially after watching the breakdown and seeing they didn't shoot any clean plates 🤣🤣🤣
Looks Great! Only one thing slightly stood out to me about the final shot, the long vertical part of the neck was a little inconsistent sometimes as you were going along the pores. It might be better to draw a line down along the neck for the part you're cutting out so its always deforming correctly. I'm nitpicking at this point though the final result was insane, way better than anything i could do, great work!
Thanks! Yes I thought about drawing a line too. I definitely would do something like that if I did it again. My initial plan was to make that part of the next with some 3D geo so it was perfectly accurate. But getting the deformation right as the head moves would have been quite tricky and I just wanted to finish the video by then 🤣
Amazing work bro! Let me ask you..Do you recommend for a small team of 3 members to use Blender + Nuke instead of using Maya and Nuke for an independent film series VFX? Do you have problems working with Blender and Nuke since Maya has more integration tools with Nuke?
Thanks! I wouldn't say Maya has more integration with nuke tools. There's no overlap other than custom tools studios have made themselves. You're probably better off using blender in a small team
@@AlfieVaughan Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I have a small team and we don't have enough budget to buy blender and Maya, so I was looking for a solution for high-end VFX without breaking the bank account.. So I'll follow your experience and use Nuke + Blender
Very inspiring! I've been using Davinci Fusion for compositing lately, and as much as I like it, I like Nuke better and will probably switch back in the future!
Nice tutorial! I'm now starting to learn Blender so this tutorial has great timing! You make it look so easy, are you sure you didn't work on The Creator?

My friend, SUPER rad video! I keep telling myself I'm going to get further into Nuke soon, but "real" work keeps getting in the way. (And, they're having us work in Flame at work.) 😢🤣 Can't wait until the next video! ✌🤟🤘
As someone who works in Nuke at a studio, do you actually pay for it at home too? I can't bring myself to and the non-commercial version, while great to have ... is a little lacking when you're used to the full version.
I would if I had to but I asked Foundry if they'd consider giving me a license for my channel a couple of years ago and they generously agreed in exchange for me making some of their Nuke tutorials. I have a good relationship with them now both at work and at home. But if that didn't exist, I'd be ok paying for nuke Indie as I do a fair bit of freelance work and make money from using Nuke on UA-cam so it's a bit of a stretch to say I'm not working commercially 🤣 I think indie is priced pretty well for professional individuals
cool! Roto of the neck seems to be sliding a bit, since you had your scan, could you not have rendered at UV pass and connect the alpha to that to get it tracked into you plate and avoid the spline having the boiling effect?
My initial plan was to do that with some 3D geo but getting the weight painting right so it didn't slide was too much of a faff. The roto was a bit of a cop out but I couldn't be bothered to do it properly 😂
I've definetly been there, it still works though! at the end of the day it's about delivering a result. I watched the creator last evening and thought to myself, now when I'm out of work I should try do something similar. then you uploaded this!@@AlfieVaughan
Thanks! No Im working in Aces as that's what I'm used to and how we do everything at work still. I like the look of AGX but it's not really got an established workflow when going to other software yet. Will be interesting to see how it progresses!

Seeing stuff like this always reminds me why I avoid using live action elements in my work.
Hahaha 🤣 I like the challenge! It's fun integrating the 2 together :)
Loved the compositing walkthrough. The contact shadow was a neat trick- love when passes an be used creatively like that

Amazing work as always Alfie. Loved the movie and great to see the breakdown from you. Still can't believe they havent used any markers on set.
Thank you! They did use a few but it was very minimal. You can see a few on their faces in some shots in the breakdown

Thanks a lot! And noted 👀
Never seen that frequency seperation technique before. Gonna note that down for my uni projects
It's a good one to know! I did a video at the start of the year all about using it for tracking too 👍
Awesome work as always! One of the few channels that actually make Nuke and Blender accessible for complete noobs like myself
Haha, thank you!
cool video, the bit about adding extra hair in the cg was interesting definitely gonna try that next time i do something like this.
Thanks dude! I saw they did it on some shots on the breakdown and it was really effective for blending the edges of the skin
I'm starting as a Junior compositor and having that TourBox would be very useful :)
Good luck 😁
Super impressive, Alfie! Great work and thanks for the detailed breakdown.
Thanks a lot Jacob! 🙏
Hell yeah. This'll come in handy with some shots I need to do soon for a short!
