Anyone who says don't change the fluid should not be talking. I just changed mine and it was like thick motor oil, so spend the $20, buy 3 bottles and change it as the new HST fluid was clear. I had oil change ramps, and I angled the blower bucket down on the ramps and filled it right up in 15 minutes, plenty of air bubbles, but leaning the unit downwards on the ramp was the perfect way to prevent air in the system.

FYI, A number of Honda owners on the snowblower forums say " don't over tighten the cap", it can cause problems, and also, fill to the line according to temperature. Bottom line =14 degrees and below, Top line 68 deg. depending on if you have 3 or 4 lines on res, second line from bottom to fill at 32deg. 3rd line up from bottom is for 50deg. So from bottom up, 14 & below, 14,32,50,68 Deg. They do this because it expands as it warms up. Don't over tighten cap.
Noticed today after checking my hydrostatic fluid level that the oil is visibly dirty in the reservoir. Since it is the beginning of the snow season I am going to hold off, but thanks to this video I think I will try to change out the fluid in the off season. Thankfully the level looks like it is where it should be since it is just below the lower limit at 35F. I have heard same thing from Honda about not changing the fluid but does seem silly. Yes, should probably just do it now but don’t want to risk a mistake with a somewhat delicate process. I really want to care for my inherited HS724 so I look forward to finding any other maintenance videos. Thank you!!
Thanks for the video. Checked my fluid today. As Im replacing the auger belt. Its dark grey. Not good. Soon as the plow goes down the road ill be getting some more to replace asap
To aid in eliminating air and speed up adding hydrostatic fluid, after partially adding fluid, 3' of small clear tubing purchased at a hardware store was slipped into the fill hole with placing thumb on top until tube was fully inserted. Balance of fluid went in relatively quickly. Honda is smart, 25 ounces of fluid is required and they sell it in 12 ounce bottles. The old fluid was really dirty, recommendation to replace is appreciated! Nice job on the video and explanations.
Not all 3' is required, just shove in as far as it will go easily.
I tried tubing and didn't work.

It was smaller than fill hole. This honda oil is very thick almost like gear oil.
I do a lot of oil sampling and use thin tubing that you cannot get at hardware stores.

Problem turned out to be a broken cotter key in linkage. The broken key would catch on the linkage when putting in forward position but not when putting in reverse position.

my honda dealer said it takes 1L and that honda themselfs like people to buy new gearboxes instead of changing, more money in it for them since they make the gearboxes but they dont make the oil, it is a sacond manufracturer.

There is recommendation for changing fluid. Use it until it fails and replace or repair.
companies prefer that people don't change their fluids. But keep buying new equipment.
Lifetime fluid, unless leaks or get contaminated.

@@repairvehicle The Honda shop manual has extensive maintenance for all aspects of the 1332, but never requires changing the transmission fluid according to its fluids schedule. But that seems hard to believe because, like you say, you'd think the fluid would get dirty or worn out.
Honda does not recommend replacing it. In manaul it says just top it off. Long life liquid Honda says!
What does long life means?

This fluid is NOT supposed to be changed. Refer to official Honda shop manual.
Common sense tells me, fluid goes bad and needs changed. Or change transmission when it fails.
There is a drain plug on the case. The magnet was full of steel filings. I don’t care what the manual says, your stupid to leave that circulating in the pump. Also on the older hs series like shown, I drill and tap the lower gearbox and install a grease zerk, greatly increases the life.
Some things have changed since I first posted this, so I've edited my original comment.
Several good tips in this video and necessary warnings. Cleanliness is essential--nothing more needs to be said about this. It is the introduction of air during the draining process that can--and likely will--create problems that could end up requiring transmission disassembly...and the home handyman certainly does not want to tackle this. My Honda HS928 snowblower developed a transmission leak (hydrostatic fluid), and because I felt this was beyond my skill & experience level I took the snowblower in for dealer service. I gambled that I wouldn't need it for a while, and was fortunate with the January weather.
At first I didn't think the leaking was as serious as it was, and at first I assumed the leak was engine oil, which I kept checking. Realized later that it was the transmission---and yes, I know that this level should have been routinely checked, but for the previous several years it has never required replenishing. The takeaway from this is that shortcuts and making assumptions is not a good way to operate.
My snowblower was into its 8th year of service, so the leak helped as incentive to take it in. I also decided to give them a green light for full service. Besides the significant leak repairs, the belts & spark plug were replaced, cables were re-run, valves adjusted, track tension was adjusted, etc. I told them I wanted it brought up to top notch status. They ended up with nearly 4 hours of service time...and this was at $120/hour. Ouch. Final bill with labor & parts was $550, so this may help you decide what repairs you are willing to tackle on your own.,
But back to the video and the hydrostatic fluid leak.....Remember, preventing the introduction of air and contaminants cannot be over-emphasized.

one way is 2 men job. First overfill the reservoir, then start drain the fluid, whereas a 2nd person keeps on adding the fluid. Just make sure no air is introduced into the system.
