I just did this to my Honda 1128, and the one caution I'd have is the location of the grease fitting. I put mine in the center (horizontally) and my grease gun nozzle is a little too wide to get in there properly. I got a few pumps in but it's a pain in the neck. You might consider moving it over to the left a bit, although you don't want to get too close to the edge. Or better yet make sure you have a right angle fitting for your grease gun. Donny, excellent instructions, the hardest part was putting the 2x4's in places so I could tip my snowblower over. Thanks much.
My 2013 HSS1332 also already have a grease fitting located on the center shaft of this gear housing. It’s accessible from between the right side track and the frame, from the top.
Just performed this service. I was nervous about drilling into the transmission but I followed all the instructions to the letter and it was quick and went off without a hitch. I put 30 pumps of cold temp grease in and it could have taken more. I hope that it works out. I'll tell you next winter as I did this as part of the spring service.
Thanks to Dony and his tips, I was able to uncover my log splitter I stored for several years, add some trufuel, and on 4th pull, started up. (oh, replaced hydraulic filter, checked oil, and added some). Great channel!
You just gave me a great idea. A snow blower was given to me but has a small hole in it due to a casting mistake. I'll just drill & tap the hole. I'll use it as a back up since I have a tractor mounted one already. Thanks.

Your videos have really helped me keep my 40 year 8Hp MTD snowblower going.I purchased a new blower about three years ago thinking my old blower would die on me,but to be honest this highly rated and very expensive machine is not half the machine as the old MTD and the old one is faster and a lot easier to maneuver and moves a lot more snow as crazy as that sounds.I have only used the new machine about 3 times at most as its a pain to use the steering setup plus it just won't handle as much snow as fast.Thanks again :-)
I've seen some of the newer machines having a square connector from the throwing arm to the chute. Older stuff is certainly built to last, maybe because only the durable ones survived.
Thank you for this video. The more I watch your videos, the more I realize, that my one-stage HONDA HS750 is better and simpler in maintenance, than buying a new two-stage Honda HS655 with wheels.

On the right side in front of the axle on the wheel drive Honda HS624, 724, 828, 928, etc. Snowblowers, there is a rubber cap about an inch in diameter. Just pull it off and add grease, no reason to drill a zerk. In the case of a tracked model, there is probably still a hole with a cap, but maybe it is hard to get to with the track assembly. If you have a tracked model, recommend looking for this cap first and see if you can get to it. The old HS55 and HS80 had a cap too. Honda likely put it there in case grease needed to be added in the future.
You said the owner can grease it now. Won't it eventually get filled with grease and start pushing out the seals? I'm thinking about adding a a second hole so i can just fill it with grease until it comes out the second (relief) hole and plugging second hole with rubber plug. I don't think the machine goes fast enough to to create pressure inside gear box, even if it does it will push out the rubber plug that can be changed to a vent like on a pickup truck rear axle. I would think Honda uses low temp grease to begin with, but the pictures i have seen showing Honda's grease pooled up away from the gears looks useless.
Great video sir. I've been watching your videos for a couple years now. I had a heck of a time finding repair videos on these machines until you started doing them. I got the big model the 1336i Last year i had this problem and couldn't figure it out. The manual says that it was the right motor overheating. I love your videos man keep up the great work

next time use a spiral tap they extract the swarf and chips for you. Or better yet - - a thread forming tap, they don't make any chips at all and the threads are a little stronger from being work hardened a bit ( depending on the alloy). BUT I have a question: What happens if you over pack the grease? Can you end up with higher friction?
Hi I have a Honda YS-524T/W, 8-10 years old. Without removing the panels, it appears to be similar to yours. It has a hydrostatic transmission. Should I install a grease nipple?

This is a great mod! Wish I knew of it back in ‘07 when I bought an HS1132 tracked machine. In 2015 that right transmission failed, so I rebuilt it. Turned out the gears inside had severely rusted, a splined driveshaft in particular. Seal failure I guess. Had there been a grease fitting to keep it charged up with grease with a few squirts annually, this failure might have been averted.
The gearbox on my 1132 tracked also failed this winter and was a complete mess inside. I just received all the parts and had the very same idea of putting a grease zirk in the case. I'm glad others are having success with this as it seems like a poor design from the factory.
I live in America, and have the same HS928, with the same transmission case on the right hand side. Hand side. Would that 6 mm x 1 mm zerk work with my grease gun? I thought they were all the same. But maybe 6 mm is a close approximation to whatever the standard size here is? This really sounds like a great idea to me. But I want to make sure that I don't end up with one grease fitting. That's a completely different size from all of the other grease fittings on all of my other machines. Thank you! I love your videos.

I've got this exact blower and it's quit engaging in F or R. There is supposed to be a shear pin on this? I can't find it and don't want to take anything apart until I know that there is one. Do have another video regarding that? I'll take a look at some of your other vid's after watching the rest of this one.
I drilled two hole one to allow air/ pressure to escape the other for the fitting. I actually pumped about 40 shots of great then plugged other hole with second grease fitting. Imo two holes are needed to avoid too much pressure in gearbox...don't want to blow seal
This is good and also I wouldn’t max out on the pumps either. If you do decide to just put one hole. Just pump a few times and the machine should spread that grease everywhere.
My seal’s already leaking, so not worried about too much grease or pressure relief concern. Just put in a few squirts now and then. But if I ever replace the leaking seal, then the upper vent hole is a great idea.
Good tip! I have a 30+ year old HS-80 with a very similar transmission (the main difference is the gear cases are reversed) and had to take the transmission apart because it failed - in my case, the input shaft ball bearing had worn out, causing the gears to come misaligned, which them ate them themselves off and eventually bore a hole in the case. When I opened it up, there was still quite a bit of grease and tons of dirt and rust, although the case wasn't packed. I this case the dirt had come in because of a missing rubber plug on the opposite end of the input shaft, which I noticed since there never had been any on my original machine and only discovered on the replacement machine I got afterwards to make one good machine out of the two , which I had gotten second hand. No wonder it all wore itself out, the dirt had made its way into the case. Had it been packed with grease, it probably wouldn't have happened :-) After that, you can believe I took both transmission cases apart and checked every single bearing in them and replaced ALL that were dodgy and assembled one good machine out of the two, as they both had wear, fortunately different enough that I able to make one good machine out of the two, with plenty of parts left should anything else fail. It was quite the saga as the machine failed in mid-January and I had to do this work by -20°C weather during a cold spell in between storms in the unheated three season solarium ;-) For the grease I didn't have the low temp kind so I used regular grease and mixed it in with some transmission oil and it worked great ;-) Another thing to check is to make sure the bolts that fasten the gear cases to the chassis aren't loose, especially the small M6 bolts on the secondary gear case. If they come loose the shafts can come misaligned and it will cause havoc. It happened a few weeks ago after the first snow, luckily I noticed it before it caused damage, I would now recommend they be checked every winter before the start of the season. Perhaps next time I'll use loctite when I assemble the thing back together ;-)
I have an old HS80 also. Did you end up putting a zirk in the trans? I'm debating putting one in mine but from tearing an old HS55 trans apart, it doesn't look like putting a zirk in the left side trans (in roughly the location Don did on the 928 in the vid) on the older HS's would work to well as the gear is so close to the case wall. Thanks in advance for any feedback.
Hi Donny I have a Honda HSS724 snowblower, my augur height setting latch is not locking in place the cable moves the mechanism moves I just can’t get it to lock in any position other than all the way down, I don’t know if possibly a part is missing or fallen out can you think of anything that’s causing this
Hi Donyboy, I really enjoyed your video. I liked the grease trick. I have a Honda HS-80 24" 8HP with tracks on it, from the middle 80s. It is in storage, It was only used about 3 seasons. It is like brand new. I have a couple of questions for you. First off, does that time frame have a gear box on it? And also can the model with tracks be converted to wheels ? And if it can do you have a part # for the fix ? I am thinking of braking it out next season. But it is really hard to turn it around in the driveway. Thank you for your time. Ron G

Got a question, I have a Honda Hs928 and when I press the drive lever and then the auger lever the auger lever is supposed to lock down it quit locking down…I don’t see a cracked cable, can you help? Regards, Tony
The old style honda hs624, 724, 828, 928, 1132, and 1332 (before 2015) have a problem with the sub transmission (track drive) failing. from the factory there is not enough grease therefore over time bearings and gears may wear away causing the transmission to slip. when this happens it’s best that you rebuild the transmission and pack it full of grease to prevent extra maintenance or cost in the future. on 2015 and up models there hasn’t yet been any problems with the sub transmissions and the small track drive blower the (hs622 and hss622) there aren’t any known issues with the track drive mechanism other than belts of course
I'm a bit confused; oil is for the engine and grease is for the gears... I assumed you meant that the gear box dried up or can dry up and cause wear on the gear box or create a failure where repair people would put new gear and grease again and close it up... until another repair job. Yes?

I had a Honda garden tiller that died because of the gear box. Can't help but wonder if a grease fitting would have made it last longer? The tiller was small like a Mantis tiller and when it died I soured on Honda a little bit. Would not be surprised if the drive on that snowblower is the same design as the one on my old tiller? Own lots of Honda gear and these gear boxes are the only major pain I have suffered and heard about from others.

I have one I bought in 2012. It's the hss 928 and I found that there is a grease zerc facing up behind the right track that looks like it goes directly into the gear case.

My brother I have chainsaws piling up I have 193 t a few of them they get hot and I think something goes wrong with them because they don't start any longer I don't know whether it's the coil or it's the carburetor???

@donyboy73 Sounds like a great idea (I have one of these), but I'm a little bit confused how this will help.. Since this is a sealed transmission, you're going to be adding grease however, there is no escape path for the old grease, so at a certain point the gearbox will fill up, no? Or am I missing something important? Why not just pump the gearbox full of grease? It can never escape and you'd only do it once, so you'd never need a grease fitting, just a bolt to cover the hole.
having opened up these and the old grease is caked and on the sides of case. plenty of room for new grease to get onto the gears. add new grease every fall.
It's not perfectly sealed, the grease can escape through the bearings at the input shafts. On the HS-80, there is a rubber plug opposite of the input shaft and if it goes missing dirt will get in and destroy the transmission, happened to me. The logic is, packing it with grease will, just like on a CV joint, force the dirt out.
Curious what the white grease is that you are using and how tacky it is? I've always used a Scaeffers white grease with moly, but they discontinued years ago and I am almost out mow. Want high tack and minimal melt/drop out.

Donyboy73 I’d be worried to drill into a $3000 + Honda snowblower. You’d think Honda would install this during production. Every mechanic I talk to here said they barely ever get Honda’s in there shops.
I have a 3 year old 1332 does that machine need this? I had 2 928 blowers one was 15 years old and one was over 20 years old with no issues and they had a lot of hours on them

You can use an M6-1 metric but the most plentiful zerk fittings you'll find in the USA are 1/4"-28 and they are cheaper than metric. For an aluminum case I would advise avoiding the tapping step altogether and use a self tapping zerk fitting. Your day is ruined if you break a tap and some of it falls into a gear box, especially a greased one!
The zerk fitting is a great suggestion. Out of curiosity, are there any problems that can occur to the engine when tilting the 928 on its nose (auger end)? e.g. do I need to remove the oil, fuel, etc. before titling the snowblower??
I have a 25? yr old hs1132 blower.... What is the problem exactly with that transmission part? I only run maybe 4 tanks of gas through it in a bad winter...basically home use only. Is this a problem on the ones used by commercial snow removal people?

Just wondering if instead of grease could a nice heavy gear oil (90W) and some Lucas additive would work as well or better?? Did it with my old LT1000 Craftsmen sit-on trans and surprisingly it didn't leak out the axles. What do you think?
Great video! I have an 11/32 Honda blower. How would a person lube the shafts with Anti-Seize like you did in a video for a “wheeled blower”, I am trying to avoid taking the blower to the dealer because of the steep labour costs.
Don - I have some play in the drive shaft as it comes out of the r.transmission (through the right engine support) on my 10 year old Honda 928TA. It moves roughly 1/8-1/4". Do I need to open the r. transmission and replace the output bearing on the drive shaft? Seems like a ton of work or can I just add a grease fitting and fill it with lube? It is a great machine.
I've had a couple of these apart, there should be no play. You likely have a bad bearing somewhere there (either in the transmissions case or one of the axle carrier bearings)
@@j1mmyd33 Thanks - this was helpful. There was a bad bearing where the driveshaft goes through the R. Transmission. It was quite a job to change it all out - and with snow in the forecast tomorrow, it felt like I was racing the clock! I replaced the driveshaft (as well as all bearings, and the seals) as well, since it was impossible to remove. Instead, I cut it in half with the sawzall and started putting things back together. Now there is no play - and things are running much smoother.
I would squirt approx 20 shots of grease every year, it might come out where the shaft is but it won't hurt anything. I currently have one in the shop tat needs that side case transmission fixed because it was never greased

Does the old grease push out anywhere, how can you know how much grease is currently in the box, so it doesn’t get overfilled?
This is an important question. I blew out grease seals in my Ariens because of overzealous maintenance. Luckily warranty covered it.

This is good and also I wouldn’t max out on the pumps either. If you do decide to just put one hole. Just pump a few times and the machine should spread that grease everywhere.

My seal’s already leaking, so not worried about too much grease or pressure relief concern. Just put in a few squirts now and then. But if I ever replace the leaking seal, then the upper vent hole is a great idea.

I have a 30+ year old HS-80 with a very similar transmission (the main difference is the gear cases are reversed) and had to take the transmission apart because it failed - in my case, the input shaft ball bearing had worn out, causing the gears to come misaligned, which them ate them themselves off and eventually bore a hole in the case. When I opened it up, there was still quite a bit of grease and tons of dirt and rust, although the case wasn't packed.
I this case the dirt had come in because of a missing rubber plug on the opposite end of the input shaft, which I noticed since there never had been any on my original machine and only discovered on the replacement machine I got afterwards to make one good machine out of the two , which I had gotten second hand. No wonder it all wore itself out, the dirt had made its way into the case. Had it been packed with grease, it probably wouldn't have happened :-)
After that, you can believe I took both transmission cases apart and checked every single bearing in them and replaced ALL that were dodgy and assembled one good machine out of the two, as they both had wear, fortunately different enough that I able to make one good machine out of the two, with plenty of parts left should anything else fail.
It was quite the saga as the machine failed in mid-January and I had to do this work by -20°C weather during a cold spell in between storms in the unheated three season solarium ;-)
For the grease I didn't have the low temp kind so I used regular grease and mixed it in with some transmission oil and it worked great ;-)
Another thing to check is to make sure the bolts that fasten the gear cases to the chassis aren't loose, especially the small M6 bolts on the secondary gear case. If they come loose the shafts can come misaligned and it will cause havoc. It happened a few weeks ago after the first snow, luckily I noticed it before it caused damage, I would now recommend they be checked every winter before the start of the season. Perhaps next time I'll use loctite when I assemble the thing back together ;-)
I have an old HS80 also. Did you end up putting a zirk in the trans? I'm debating putting one in mine but from tearing an old HS55 trans apart, it doesn't look like putting a zirk in the left side trans (in roughly the location Don did on the 928 in the vid) on the older HS's would work to well as the gear is so close to the case wall. Hi Donny I have a Honda HSS724 snowblower, my augur height setting latch is not locking in place the cable moves the mechanism moves I just can’t get it to lock in any position other than all the way down, I don’t know if possibly a part is missing or fallen out can you think of anything that’s causing this
I have the older model 11-32 honda. It came with a grease nipple on the outside for that gearcase.
Hi Donyboy, I really enjoyed your video. I liked the grease trick. I have a Honda HS-80 24" 8HP with tracks on it, from the middle 80s. It is in storage, It was only used about 3 seasons. It is like brand new. I have a couple of questions for you. First off, does that time frame have a gear box on it? And also can the model with tracks be converted to wheels ? And if it can do you have a part # for the fix ? I am thinking of braking it out next season. But it is really hard to turn it around in the driveway. Thank you for your time. Ron G

Got a question, I have a Honda Hs928 and when I press the drive lever and then the auger lever the auger lever is supposed to lock down it quit locking down…I don’t see a cracked cable, can you help? Regards, Tony

The old style honda hs624, 724, 828, 928, 1132, and 1332 (before 2015) have a problem with the sub transmission (track drive) failing. from the factory there is not enough grease therefore over time bearings and gears may wear away causing the transmission to slip. when this happens it’s best that you rebuild the transmission and pack it full of grease to prevent extra maintenance or cost in the future. on 2015 and up models there hasn’t yet been any problems with the sub transmissions and the small track drive blower the (hs622 and hss622) there aren’t any known issues with the track drive mechanism other than belts of course

I'm a bit confused; oil is for the engine and grease is for the gears... I assumed you meant that the gear box dried up or can dry up and cause wear on the gear box or create a failure where repair people would put new gear and grease again and close it up... until another repair job. Yes?

I had a Honda garden tiller that died because of the gear box. Can't help but wonder if a grease fitting would have made it last longer? The tiller was small like a Mantis tiller and when it died I soured on Honda a little bit. Would not be surprised if the drive on that snowblower is the same design as the one on my old tiller? Own lots of Honda gear and these gear boxes are the only major pain I have suffered and heard about from others.

I have one I bought in 2012. It's the hss 928 and I found that there is a grease zerc facing up behind the right track that looks like it goes directly into the gear case.
a few did come with a grease fitting but most didn't

My 2013 HSS1332 also already have a grease fitting located on the center shaft of this gear housing. It’s accessible from between the right side track and the frame, from the top.

Scraper bar 1" out from housing then adjust the skids to how low you want the scraper bar to scrape! Be sure it's in the middle peddle adjustment.

My brother I have chainsaws piling up I have 193 t a few of them they get hot and I think something goes wrong with them because they don't start any longer I don't know whether it's the coil or it's the carburetor???

Sounds like a great idea (I have one of these), but I'm a little bit confused how this will help.. Since this is a sealed transmission, you're going to be adding grease however, there is no escape path for the old grease, so at a certain point the gearbox will fill up, no? Or am I missing something important?
Why not just pump the gearbox full of grease? It can never escape and you'd only do it once, so you'd never need a grease fitting, just a bolt to cover the hole.
having opened up these and the old grease is caked and on the sides of case. plenty of room for new grease to get onto the gears. add new grease every fall.
It's not perfectly sealed, the grease can escape through the bearings at the input shafts. On the HS-80, there is a rubber plug opposite of the input shaft and if it goes missing dirt will get in and destroy the transmission, happened to me. The logic is, packing it with grease will, just like on a CV joint, force the dirt out.
Curious what the white grease is that you are using and how tacky it is? I've always used a Scaeffers white grease with moly, but they discontinued years ago and I am almost out mow. Want high tack and minimal melt/drop out.

Donyboy73 I’d be worried to drill into a $3000 + Honda snowblower. You’d think Honda would install this during production. Every mechanic I talk to here said they barely ever get Honda’s in there shops.

You can use an M6-1 metric but the most plentiful zerk fittings you'll find in the USA are 1/4"-28 and they are cheaper than metric. For an aluminum case I would advise avoiding the tapping step altogether and use a self tapping zerk fitting. Your day is ruined if you break a tap and some of it falls into a gear box, especially a greased one!

The zerk fitting is a great suggestion. Out of curiosity, are there any problems that can occur to the engine when tilting the 928 on its nose (auger end)? e.g. do I need to remove the oil, fuel, etc. before titling the snowblower??
I’ve always taken the fuel out when putting the machine on its nose. I’m interested to hear what an expert has to say, cause I’m not an expert.
I have a 25? yr old hs1132 blower.... What is the problem exactly with that transmission part? I only run maybe 4 tanks of gas through it in a bad winter...basically home use only. Is this a problem on the ones used by commercial snow removal people?

Just wondering if instead of grease could a nice heavy gear oil (90W) and some Lucas additive would work as well or better?? Did it with my old LT1000 Craftsmen sit-on trans and surprisingly it didn't leak out the axles. What do you think?

Great video! I have an 11/32 Honda blower. How would a person lube the shafts with Anti-Seize like you did in a video for a “wheeled blower”, I am trying to avoid taking the blower to the dealer because of the steep labour costs.

Don - I have some play in the drive shaft as it comes out of the r.transmission (through the right engine support) on my 10 year old Honda 928TA. It moves roughly 1/8-1/4". Do I need to open the r. transmission and replace the output bearing on the drive shaft? Seems like a ton of work or can I just add a grease fitting and fill it with lube? It is a great machine.
I've had a couple of these apart, there should be no play. You likely have a bad bearing somewhere there (either in the transmissions case or one of the axle carrier bearings)
@@j1mmyd33 Thanks - this was helpful. There was a bad bearing where the driveshaft goes through the R. Transmission. It was quite a job to change it all out - and with snow in the forecast tomorrow, it felt like I was racing the clock! I replaced the driveshaft (as well as all bearings, and the seals) as well, since it was impossible to remove. Instead, I cut it in half with the sawzall and started putting things back together. Now there is no play - and things are running much smoother.

Would love to know how much grease to use and how often. If I do it every year won't it build up?
I would squirt approx 20 shots of grease every year, it might come out where the shaft is but it won't hurt anything. I currently have one in the shop tat needs that side case transmission fixed because it was never greased
