On my 928 HS where the gearbox is that big steel shaft extended out between the track and the body sticking out about an inch I do have a zit grease fitting it took me 20 years to find that out. Thanks Anthony for making me looking at my machine in 20 years I never brought it to a shop but because of you. I am doing a heck of a service on it. I’ve been working on it I think more than six hours so far. And my next big job I need to change the drive belt it is cracked, so I’m waiting for your video on how to remove the box .🇨🇦

I have a video on removing bucket. How to change belts video I believe. Are you a member of my Facebook group HONDA SNOWBLOWER ENTHUSIASTS? I'm there every day all day long. Thanks for watching.

Hey Anthony, thanks for the instructional video on installing a zerk fitting. I was wondering if I could install the zerk fitting higher up on the gearbox so that I could reach the fitting from above (right above that kick lever plate) I could use a grease gun with a short hose extension. Is there any problem with drilling in that location of the gearbox? Thanks.

It would help if you specified which models this applies to.

I thought i did in comments and description. thanks. any HS model with this gearbox. Not the HSS models or the single stages.

I first saw this mod on donyboy73 UA-cam channel if you want to check it out. This gear case is very similar to the Snapper RER mower gear case which is serviced once a year with 2 ounces 00 grease through a 1/2 inch hole that has a plastic bung that is in the side of the case. Some people are now using gear oil instead of the 00 grease in the Snapper gear case as it ensures the gears are bathed in lubricant. Snapper gear cases were suffering the same fate as Honda blowers with the old grease hardening and not doing the job. I have been using gear oil in my snapper with no problems and the mower is 39 years old. Would this be a option for the Honda HS series gear cases? I don't know but the 00 grease might be worth trying as it comes in a squeeze bottle with a tapered tip which so easy to put in to the gear case. Fill holes in the gear cases also give the correct leave of lubricant so when it comes out the hole the case is full.

Thanks for comment. people have asked about oil before and you can't install oil because this case is not sealed. I just use water resistant marine low temp grease and pump in new grease every fall. You cant put too much in. Actually it's best to fill with grease to keep water from entering.

If you pump in too much, won’t the seals blow out? Also, if you pump in new grease every year, what about seals? I’m also wondering if you could use John Deere corn head grease- it somewhat liquifies when it gets warm, then stiffens a little when it cools down…use it in my JD thrower gearbox…

DO NOT do this procedure. Honda, who I consider to be the finest engineers around, would have installed this, if it was meant to be there. The thing about it is, this is simply not meant to happen and I will explain why- Let's face it, the grease doesn't leak or burn; what it does do, is get very dirty, salty and hard(like aged cake icing)-I call it contaminated. To do this right, you need to get into the gearbox at least every 2 years to inspect it's condition. Let's face it, if an undetected cracked-off hardened axle pin gets into the gear box path, it's game over. Major bill. Another reason you need to get into the gearbox is to remove the contaminated grease and freshen it up with new approved grease.
Another thing to look for and one that kills a Honda blower, are seized or noisy bearings. There are 9 bearings that MUST be checked, at least every 2 years and guaranteed you are replacing 1 or more of these bearings.
By the way, that Grease Zerk that Honda installs on their machines on the Sub Tranny gear box plate is for assembly purposes only and nothing else, otherwise it would be mentioned in the manual.
My Honda Snowblower(1132) is going into it's 16th winter. Every time I go out, I do 4 driveways and my blower is as dependable as one could expect and I do all my own maintenance.
Many experts say that a Honda Blower can outlast You and I believe them.
Here are my yearly (Inspectable) maintenance items:
    -Pull Cord
-2 Auger Bearings(on each side of the Auger)
-Auger Impeller Bearing(behind the box, that spins the auger belt). I make a habit of replacing that every year. It makes the machine run smooth
    -2 Crawler Bearings
-Left Side Plate bearing, that the axle goes through
    -3 Sub Transmission Bearings
    -5W 30 (Non-Synthetic) Motor Oil
-Slide Skis- make sure they are adjusted and replaced when worn through. How many blowers do I see with no or worn out skis. The Auger box gets eaten alive and your augers teeth go from steak knives to butter knives
-Anti-Seize Lubricant on the Auger Sub Axles. When the Shear pins snap, you auger is suppose to stop. A seized axle just keeps spinning.
-Inspect the Auger and Drive Belts yearly
    -Inspect, Lube or replace cables
-I try to use low temp silicon lubricants.
I move a gazzilion tons of snow each year and my machine is up for the challenge. The only thing that has failed me are shear pins. Happy Snow Clearing!
    .

who opens this gearbox every 2 years? That would be $300-400 labor around here. The Canadian machines have this grease zerk so please explain that? Anyways thanks for comment. I'll agree to disagree . This zerk install is one the best things to do. Why are Honda dealers starting to add this procedure to their services for the older models?

Curious how many of these gearboxes you have inspected rebuilt? How many Honda snowblowers have you worked on? Did you speak to a Honda engineer as I have about this? I have. You are partially correct. they did mention preventive maintenance by servicing this gearbox but not every 2 years. They suggested 10 years or sooner if used commercially . But once again the normal Honda owner is not going to the expense of doing this. I have opened up many of these boxes. When I rebuild , I fill the box 100% with grease to keep water or other contaminates out. Thanks.

IMO, the grease zerk is used at the manufacturers stage to fill the empty or dry sub tranny. That grease zerk is not mentioned anywhere in the owners or service manual as being something to be used to pump fresh grease to mix with old grease. I guess it's personal preference in what you believe is best for your machine. I just don't think it's a good practice. Of the hundreds of blowers that I have serviced or repaired, they are all performing fine. @@HondaSnowblowerEnthusiasts311

I have repaired enough sub trannies to realize that a seized bearing or a broken-off hardened pin that mixes into the grease is not good for the blowers operation or the pocket book. I have never seen a Hydrostatic transmission lose an arm wrestle match to any part. You want to work in co-operation with your HS Tranny and not against. The 2 years is more related to the number of hours and where you live. Where I live, the salt is tortuous on machine and I have found 2 years to be a suitable teardown maintenance period, where at least 1 bearing will need to be replaced.
I have serviced the Honda blowers for my adjacent neighbours and subsequent tear-downs have proven to be less costly if they are done on a 2 year teardown cycle.
Sorry, I just don't believe in putting new grease on top of the old grease and possibly parts, but then again, I am not paying for it.

Broken pin in this gearbox and the machine would not work. Anyways this repair is about $250 in parts and about the same for labor. And most of these gearboxes last 20-30 years before they break unless of course they are abused by operator or used commercially. Financially speaking i think most owners would rather pay $500 one time after 20 years than doing the teardown 10 times over 20 years at a cost of $2500-5000... Between me and a couple of my Honda tech friends who work for dealers we have worked on thousands of these machines and everyone agrees that the zerk and new grease can prolong the life of the final drive gearbox. Good luck. Thanks . @@bobkirby669
