    I hope one day we get the full story of Tom Riddle. That would have been the preferred prequel for 99.99% of HP fans.

      @Doomzdeh Рік тому +3

      Honestly, yeah. But I would prefer someone whose story we haven’t heard completely yet. Like, we already know how Tom turns out and what he does. It’d be nice, perhaps, to learn about someone obscure like Regulus Black or Mad-Eye Moody or even the Prewett Twins.
      Heck, I’d even take someone like Andromeda Tonks. I think they could do something with that. Voldemort was just starting to amass followers when most of these characters were in Hogwarts or leaving Hogwarts.

      @@Doomzdeh JK built such an expansive universe that there are so many stories yet to be told, so many ways they could take it. HP content could continue for the next 100 years! I’ll be happy with anything they do, I love the book series so much.

      I mean, it’s not as if Dumbledore really ever left Hogwarts, and I doubt that he could reasonably track Tom anywhere once he left Hogwarts and the Orphanage.
      Add that to the fact that the Riddle Murders are probably reported as generic “Muggle Murders by Gaunts” and you really don’t give Dumbledore much reason to have heard of the murders and suspect Tom of them.
      Plus, even if Dumbledore could’ve intervened, this was around the time that Grindelwald was still running around and causing havoc. I’m sure Dumbledore’s mind was much more concerned about that.

    I’ve never really thought about why the Trace didn’t detect Tom using magic to kill his father and grandparents while he was underage, but you did a great job with the explanation.

      It's pointed out in the books that the trace doesn't detect who did it, just the location. So by the time the ministry got there they found Morfin with the wand that did it, him freely confessing and it helped that he'd previously attacked the same muggles. Nobody was going to look into that much further.

    Tbh it would have made more sense if the trace was actually something that was placed on the underage magical user's wand instead of their body or however the trace currently works in the books, so any magic cast would be tracked showing what spell casted, location and time. That way it would have made sense for Voldemort to get away with the crime since he was using his uncle's wand.

    but the ministry would know an underage wizard was present. So someone else had to be at the crime scene. And it would take little to no detective skills to notice the murdered family's last name was all Riddle. And an underage student at Hogwarts just happens to have to same last name? I know the whole point is that the MOM is incompetent but it really should be standard operating procedure to prod a suspect’s memories with veritaserum or a pensive in the days leading up to the crime to make sure even their confessions aren’t under the influence of the Imperius Curse.
    It really shouldn’t be possible to have a miscarriage of justice with those tools available to the court to determine the truth of the matter.

    My theories:
    1 - Tom was noted but not the way Harry was. The Trace normally has a few Aurors or related enforcement on them, looking at all underage activity for all of Britain. Harry had teams just for him, when he was favored by Fudge, and when he was targeted.
    2 - The unpopularity of the Riddles could have been from any number of things, but I would like to propose a somewhat controversial take - I say controversial because it can seem to be victim-blaming. Tom Sr. did not deserve to be used and imprisoned, that out of the way. But his family, especially the men, may have made sweet talk to the women of the surrounding villages and then walked away, like a seductive prima noctae situation. Hell, if the Trio ever investigated Little Hangleton, they might find whole nests of Riddles who were denied by their fathers and stirred the resentments we heard tell of.
    3 - It is entirely possible Tom Jr. went there with murder on his mind, and his only intent. But part of me wonders if he didn't first ask for acknowledgement, possibly a stipend or grant/trust, only to be harshly turned away due to the association with Tom Sr.'s ordeal combined with the upper-crust air-sniffing the family seemed to engage in. It literally may not have mattered, but I wonder if an attitude of 'the boy exists, we won't embrace him but we will give him some small due' might have purchased their lives. I guess some optimistic part of me has to imagine that at some point, there was still something in Tom Jr. that could be reached out to. Maybe that's just naive.

  • @grec.
    @grec. Рік тому +8

    I think how he was able to get away with it has more to do with timing.
    He traced his family but the MOM knew the Gaunts and that the weren't any underage wizards in their household nor the proximities of Little Hangleton.
    So he did the killing curse and the memory altering charms then probably 'dissaparated' himself from the scene. Probably took him about 20 to 30 minutes to achieve such deeds. Then the MOM only got there too late and the police even later on, to find the only suspect who later confessed to the crimes.
    Maybe the MOM detected the underage magic done there in the Gaunt's house, went there and since a crime took place but the suspect was not underage, they probably thought it might had been a mistake and didn't investigate further.
    It is very possible. Jk probably had to explained it and not leave it to our imagination something so crucial to the plot and the story BUT in the story's defense I'll say, it's better this way so we all put our own pieces of imagination into it and it makes it even more interesting.

    Yeah. Voldemort was a smart bastard not just plain evil. Truly special character that could have been good if raised in a different loving way. I understand how evil Morfin was as well, however I felt bad for him on his sad fate he didn't deserve it. No matter how evil a person is, nobody deserves losing his clear mind it's even far more cruel than death. And while murder is of course a horrible thing, I can understand why he did it to his father. However his grandparents he could have just obliviate them and forget he ever met them. But to him he wanted to erase every drop of dirty heritage. Not the Gaunt heritage was so much better because it wasn't.

The books make no explicit mention of them but considering the Tale of the Three Brothers implies the existence of a personification of death at least, it got me thinking on whether or not there might be other powerful beings that embody other fundamental concepts as well.

    Another issue is that Tom had used his Uncle's Wand to commit his crime and in Harry's case, he used his own when he cast a Patronus Charm to save Dudley from the Dementors.
    The use of any Wand in the Wizarding World is regulated the same way as Gun Control for the Muggles and Wand Crafting would be so regulated that only a few Wizards can craft them and rarely teach this trade. 🪄🔮
