I have to say I love the part where petunia slips up and explains about the dementors and when Harry explains to them that Voldemort is back. The way it is explained that petunia looked at Harry with fear not hatred always makes me look at them differently.

One of my fav parts in the movie, is when Sirius accidentally calls Harry James. It shows what everyone around them has been thinking, that he never truly got over the loss of his friend and saw Harry as somewhat of a replacement.
Maybe that's part of why he loves Harry so much.

Yes, he felt lonely. Everyone was telling him to do this to do that but not saying the reason why. Ron and Hermione too didn't say anything. So in Harry's point of view everyone was hiding things from Harry and was not telling him anything. He felt isolated...
With Sirius’ character, he had been able to roam free since prisoner of Azkaban and now he had to stay cooped up in a house he hated and most of the time didn’t have any company except for kreacher. You can see how happy he was when Harry and the weasleys stayed for Christmas.

After quarantine, I understand how extended isolation and not leaving the house effects people. It gets into your head and makes you not quite right. Sirius was being sent straight back to Azkaban while being trapped in that house. Can you _really_ blame him for not being happy about things?
He's also never been the most well-adjusted person to begin with- he's the least mature Marauder after Wormtail, and tried to KILL Snape when he was a student as a prank; the risks he took to support Harry or get Harry gifts in the previous books could easily be attributed to his reckless disposition, loneliness and trauma as much as caring for a godson he's never met etc
I always read Sirius as a tragic, impulsive and emotionally stunted character owing to his false imprisonment and the loss of so many close friends, as well as his lousy childhood and his tempermental and contrarian nature- frankly, even if Lily's Blood Protection spell was not a factor, I STILL wouldn't want Harry and Sirius to be living together, because to be frank Sirius is too unstable and needs many, many years of serious therapy before he can be trusted with looking after a kid, especially one he might be emotionally confusing with his long dead childhood friend. It would probably be a dysfunctional arrangement where Sirius keeps wanted Harry to go on adventures with him, and Harry gets disturbed by his treatment of Kreacher (and vice-verse) and Sirius having random outbursts and breakdowns- in other words, it wouldn't be as fun as either of them imagined it to be.

I don't like Harry's relationship with Cho because she isn't the right person for him, BUT I don't blame her for her crying It's PTSD, honestly. Just because she processes it through grief rather than anger like Harry does, it doesn't mean it's bad. That and the fact that Voldemort is looming over the whole thing, of course.
I agree that Cho and her grief aren't necessarily bad, it's more how she pretty much takes it out on Harry that I find infuriating. She lost her boyfriend, but Harry was the one who had to watch him die and then get tortured by Voldemort and Death Eaters. Of course he doesn't want to talk about it.
Please, it's not like she was Cedric's wife. They went to a dance together and dated for some months (4-5?). That's about it. She shouldn't feel that broken-hearted.

ootp is my favorite book because i love the emotion in it. everytime i read "umbridge" i got nervous. i could feel harry's pain throughout the book, especially when he locked himself in the room with buckbeak. my favorite part was harry's conversation with dumbledore. i loved how calm dumbledore was while harry threw his things and how it made harry even angrier.

This is true. When I was reading the book, Harry's emotions was hurting we so much. His trauma was brutal 😢 My heart was broken when Sirius was killed and Harry was shattered. It was so good when Harry was finally raging about what Dumbledore have done. I was feeling so much furious because of Albus. I have kinda really hated him after this 😭😂😂

@@Babidi111 It would have been, if they hadn't already sort of messed up Dumbledore's character in the movie's. Dumbledore had long since lost his "always calm" cahracter that he had in the books, especially since Goblet of Fire, so the scene honestly wouldn't have really had the same effect anymore even if they had kept it.
my reading of this book completely changed when i read it through the lens of trauma. arguably, the theme of this book is that trauma can dramatically change our relationships, emotions, and reactions even if everything is technically “the same”. cho, harry, and sirius react to things differently now because they’re having a trauma response, and as an adult i think i can appreciate that as an element of their development (it’s actually a good thing for a character to respond to things that have happened as opposed to staying static throughout, even if that change is to be more aggressive or more selfish. it shows that the world has stakes!) when i was a kid i found this book super boring and frustrating, but now i appreciate it differently. :)

Absolutely! Sirius and Harry acting out of character is a result of that trauma 100% and neither one of them knew how to deal or talk about it. AND both of their environments were super toxic. Sirius in the Black household and Harry at school with Umbridge and Snape. 😪

I've only read this one once. Somehow in under two weeks and it hurt to put it down, apart from the department of mysteries bit. That went on and on and on😂
I got through it in 3 days during isolation but it still felt like a slog ( ano 3 days is nothing but with all the rest I got through in 2 minus goblet which was 3)

@Jenna Lenn999 You definitely make a good point, but Cho was seriously all over the place, and it wasn't fair to Harry to have to try and navigate all that. He made a good choice by calling off the relationship. Having a loved one murdered would definitely give people everlasting PTSD, but I think that The Order of the Phoenix would've been a better story as a whole if Cho's character was written a little different, possibly with less mood swings?

One of the reasons I appreciate this book, is the way the reader treats Sirius is how people tend to treat depressed people in real life. We think they are being selfish and should be happy when they are feeling isolated and alone. JK did a great job of portraying depression through Sirius

With the Harry punching Malfoy part, while I agree that it was out of character, I think Rowling did this deliberately to show how Harry's circumstances are affecting him and changing him. Think about it, he has severe ptsd from seeing his friend die and the evillest wizard who ever lived come back to life, his mentor Dumbledore is ignoring him, he's having dreams that he doesn't understand and a lot more. So I think because of how stressed he was during this book, him acting up more than what he usually does makes sense. Just my thoughts though
Personally I would say order of the Phoenix was my favorite, I always felt like the first 4 books felt like 4 separate stories and the last three felt like one story told in three parts, when i read the order of the Phoenix it was the first book, not just in the series, but the first book in my life that I was disappointed to finish, because I really just wanted to keep reading but had to wait 2 years for the next one.

Exactly, I love how they split up, first there are 6 of them, then 3, and then just Neville and Harry. It builds so much suspense for me.

Honestly I think Harry beating Malfoy hard in the book would have fitted in the movie very well, since in the movie you have a lot of scenes with Harry acting like Voldemort and the struggle of Harry thinking he is turning bad, this fight, framed and edited properly with flashes of Voldemort in between punches, the music getting sinister and people around him reacting, make Malfoy look more sympathetic after seeing Harry go too far and even Harry scared of what he did himself, would be a very powerful scene.

Harry is really gary stu'd down as the series progresses. The angst, even from Order of the Phoenix, isn't nearly close to the level it is in the book. He's not as sassy and moody in the films.
I think everyone here is insane it's easily my favorite book I think Harry gets the best character development with him being imperfect and letting his mistreatment affect his mood for once.
And the fact that now for once the actual Ministry of magic is the enemy this time makes the threat really close to home compared to before where it was just Voldemort each time.

I get it. This book had the best character development. But you need to know the audience of this book are kids, or early teenagers, who by the way, have a low attention span.
The plot was good and subtle but it was nothing mind-blowing, or something that kids or early teens find stimulating: like horcruxes

Harry in the books needed several minutes till he understood that Sirius was dead, I think that's the reason why they choose the killing curse in the movie. To make it more obviously that Sirius was dead..

I agree that Sirius if not really his normal self when we first see him in this book, but I really feel like the time that the characters spend in that house is very important to understand why exactly Sirius is seemingly behaving so selfishly. It's imperative to impress upon the reader just how dark and dreary and depressing the house of black is, and about the nature of his relationship with the rest of the black family. This is a place that he hoped he would never ever have to come back to. Having to live inside a constant reminder of the Bad Blood and falling-out that you had with your family is quite literally one of the most depressing things I could ever imagine. The reason I feel it is so important is because this is directly what leads to Sirius behaving so recklessly and is indirectly what gets him killed in the end. The reason I feel it is so important is because it quite specifically highlights that Sirius is in a regressive state that kind of brings him down to a parallel with Harry's level in terms of his emotional state of mind. This is also what brings up his Hang-Ups about treating hairy as though he is James. Like I said, I absolutely agree that we don't see the best side of Sirius in this portion of the book, and I can absolutely understand why it would somewhat shatter that image of the protective Godfather that we have seen from him up to this point. But it also does a lot in terms of humanizing him and by pointing out his faults, it actually highlights one of the main lessons that Harry must learn, which is that the adults who have been protecting him are themselves people with their own problems and faults and feelings and Harry must learn to accept that. I feel that this is something that every kid goes through at some point and that every adult must learn to deal with. I can see why people were conflicted about this, but I feel that the importance of it cannot be overstated
I like this idea a lot!! However, it could've been done in the fourth book to show a change in the adults in the mid-point of the series and keep his role as godfather closer to his death. Adults are already deconstructed with the ministry, dumbledore, snape, lupin and many other characters. JK successfully created deeply complex characters, however we all fall into our given/taken roles every now and again, I think it would've benefited the story for sirius to do so one last time.
I feel like the cho chang arc is pretty funny. it feels like a relatable failed high school romance where you think someone's great from a distance but then you hang out and everything is just a lot more awkward than you imagined. i also personally like that harry ends up alone at the end of the book though I get your argument about unity with his friends. the reason i appreciate him fighting alone though is because I feel like overall harry's skills as a wizard are generally pretty underestimated. this is the first time when all of his friends are with him but they don't make it as far as him and it just really exemplifies to me harry's above average skills in defense against the dark arts.

16-year-old Harry throwing a tantrum in Dumbly’s office is everything to me.
True😂. Harry was the guy who complains a lot that he hates being famous but becomes jealous and pissed when the attention was not on him. And he was kind of a jerk and worst friend in this book and way over his head.
@chethansreddy5324 excuse me, what? The whole point of the tantrum scene is that Harry is grieving. He lost the only person he has ever been able to consider family literally that same day, and you're calling his anger attention-seeking behavior? Have you read these books? He was mad because Sirius died. Even though Harry had only known him for 2 years at this point, he had already grown to accept him as a father figure. The poor boy basically just saw his dad murdered in front of him. This is not attention-seeking. This is pure grieving rage. This scene is one of the most emotional in the book (I think, been a while since I read them). It is a downright shame it didn't make it into the movie. This is one thing I think the book did amazingly that the movie could not quite capture.

I feel like the only reason Sirius is like this in the book is that he was tired of being cooped up in the house with no hope of helping the order or protecting Harry from harm. Being stuck in the same place for so long knowing that you can't do anything to help or protect your loved ones probably took a toll on him. Also, the house he lives in probably reminds him of the painful memories he had as a kid growing up with a pureblood obsessed family ( and the family tree), so that could probably explain his behavior in the book.
Still... We could have had a mix of how frustrated he felt (book) and how loving he was toward Harry (movie)
Harry and Sirius have also met many times between book 3 and 5. in the movies it's the first time.
If he had been tender to harry while being generally upset while not interacting with him it would've added to his character

Not only that, it was also an important plot point. The Sirius fought the battle of the department of mysteries to rescue Harry was because, well, he wanted to be in action and duel.
The Order of the Phoenix is actually my favourite mostly because it's so long and has so much details haha Everytime I'm so happy to throw myself into it because I know it's so long and I can fully immerge myself into the universe !

@@SidPil because she tried to free house-elves. Most of them, were already happy at Hogwarts when Helga Hufflepuff employed them and probably saved them somehow from sth. Hermione thought this wasn't enough and wanted them to have freedom and rights. I do agree with them deserving rights(yeah, Lucius, looking at you, your family, the Blacks and all you other annoying pure-bloods who mistreat your house-elves), but most elves didn't need freedom as they somehow felt free.
I think the core issue with house elves is that if they really wanted to work for the wizards, they wouldn't need to be enslaved. And that's exactly what they are, slaves.
If the elves want to work for you, free them and let them do it of their own choice under conditions that they agree with. It's absurd to suggest that a house elf couldn't do work unless they were enslaved.
I like this book, but it’s just so long, I felt like it dragged. I wanted more Order of the Phoenix and Dumbledore’s Army, then all the chapters before we got to Hogwarts, I found there would be a lot of mention of how the DA meetings were going but not a lot of actually seeing them.
Lmao that's actually pretty true. I didn't like how long it took to get to Hogwarts. It only got good at the DA parts and Umbridge drama.

Here's another example of how much Sirius cares about Harry, at the end of the Prisoner of Azkaban, he told Harry in a letter that let himself be seen in public miles and miles away from Hogwarts so the Ministry would remove the dementors from the school.
I have hard time rereading this book too.
But I think it’s brilliant, how Sirius and Harry never thought it was their last times together.
They are both teenagers with severe trauma, I personally think Sirius was stuck mentally at the age he went to prison.
This was what made the Sirius’s death even more impactful.
That mirrors with the next book’s ending, when Ginny says that Harry and she could’ve had years together.
And their happy ending is more special and significant because this time Harry got his life with the person.

Order of the Phoenix was actually my *most* favorite Harry Potter book. I absolutely loved it!!
One thing that always confused me about Hermione leaving clothes around the commonroom hoping the elves would pick them up is that the elves aren't hers? Like how can she give clothes to house elves that aren't sworn to her in order to free them? Wouldn't Dumbeldore have to give them clothes to free them? Since they work for the school then I'd imagine they technically work for him or be employed by him.

Oooo this looks fun. Some thoughts:
OOTP is my favorite of the books for sure, but it did take 3 reads before it entered my #1 ranking. I still enjoyed it during initial reads, but the middle chunk is quite slow. To its credit though, the sheer amount of detail in the book helped me get invested in the characters and universe more than ever. And, I appreciated said details and depth more on 2nd and 3rd reads, even if pacing tanks a bit in the middle chunk; late 20s. But the plot drag in the story at points is totally understandable.
The Weasly is our King part is actually one of my favorite parts of the books, because Ron rises to the occasion and grows through that terrible experience. Ron's resilience and patience through that ordeal really made me appreciate his character, and that plot line cause me to love Ron more than ever.
The Cho Chang point I totally agree with though lol. Her character has not aged well.
I still need to marinade on the other points, but despite it being my favorite book I can see what you mean concerning OOTP's different issues. I seriously love OOTP even still and it is the HP book I have re-read the most.

I would disagree on Ron's patience. He's not patient out of himself but is forced to. He wants to resign but Aneglina won't let him. Still, Ron's triumph at the end of it is great, of course. :)
I actually like it a lot and I’d rate it either 3 or 4 on any given Sunday. I remember reading it the first time and actually being hungry for the level of detail that Rowling provided. However, I can see why this reviewer has it ranked so low. Sometimes the cinematic and book versions blend together for me and I can’t separate the two to accurately rate it.
U said that hogwarts takes 10.5 chapters to be introduced in this book but in goblet of fire it took 11 chapters to get the hogwarts express

While the Goblet of Fire took longer to get to Hogwarts, it did much better with what it had. You get a small glimpse of Voldemorts backstory, the best Dursley visit, the Quiditch World Cup, etc. Now, compare that to Order of the Phoenix, where we..., clean a house?

But we hard the Quidditch World Cup and the appearance of the Dark Mark and Death Eaters as well as that opening chapter with Voldemort and Wormtail. It builds tensions and sets up the ending and we get to see an international wizarding tournament. Plus, Harry isn’t yelling every 10 lines

I respect your opinion is very different to mine but I love this book and I’m gonna say why I disagree:
firstly I think the fact sirius acts ‘differently’ (which I don’t 100% agree on) is because he’s stuck in a house he literally ran away from. he’s shown to be depressed, most of the world now knows how it feels to be stuck in your house without leaving, especially a place that holds terrible memories would have an emotional toll on you. and sirius is an impulsive, selfish character - that’s why he said harry should be happy for a fight. sirius also then goes on to actually tell harry information about voldemort and the order, what’s he’s been yearning for all summer - unlike anyone else in the order! sirius is also a great comfort to harry throughout the year despite his situation and I never disliked sirius after reading this book!
secondly the fight between harry and the twins and malfoy - this was a long time coming. malfoy constantly gets away with his bullying, and he really insulted all of them, and all the students (especially harry) are under so much pressure from umbridge. harry feels betrayed, isolated and he’s angry - malfoy was a breaking point. and it doesn’t really condone it: mcgonagall yells at them afterwards and says it’s appalling behaviour.
the cho chang romance i thought was a cute depiction of awkward and sweet first love. i actually sympathise with cho, she clearly wanted to confide in harry because they both shared the same grief, and she thought he would get it. i thought it was a really realistic way of showing a teenage relationship that doesn’t really work out because you figure out you don’t click with the other person/ get what they need from you. of course it wasn’t the great love story of the sixth book because harry and ginny were meant for each other and end up together.
as for the pacing I can see why you have issues, although I thought the mystery and uncertainty of the department of mysteries makes it suspenseful. also no hate, clearly we like different things! I think this book is one of the times harry is at his lowest so for ppl who don’t like to read about him having a shitty time I get why you’d like the other stories, but for me I love the angst hahah
Haha, I have the opposite reaction to OotP. It's my favorite and always has been.
I love how it meanders and lingers on details as oppose to rushing from action to action. The ending in the book is a thousand times better than the movie for me. The movie version feels so vanilla in comparison. The fact that it's taking so long, in what's supposed to be a race against time, adds an undercurrent of suspense. You can feel how stressed Harry is, how desperate. The fact that the six are split up makes for a lot of tension because you don't KNOW what's happening to them or if they're okay. Sort of horror-movie style your mind comes up with worst case scenarios. And Harry being alone makes the situation more dire in the books.
Neville, Luna and Ginny's moments are also so, so great. Up until that point, we knew how badass Ron and Hermione are. But this was the first time we really saw the other three really shine. Harry even thinks to himself, before they take off, that they would be his last picks from the DA for a mission like this. He really eats those words.
While HBP (book and movie) are super low on the list, maybe even least favorite. Funnily enough the relationship bullshit in HBP is more difficult for me, because it's so dumb. Cho at least has reason to be emotionally confused, as oppose to Ginny's other love interests. Ron, Lavender and Hermione's love triangle is sooo boring because I hate love triangles. Though I like Harry and Ginny in that book a lot.
The OotP movie is among my least favorite of the movies, because they cut so much. 😂
However, I agree 💯% with you on Sirius. He's much better in the movie. Love your video essays.

I didn't remember Sirius was portrayed that depressed. If that was intended, I wish Rowling had built on it more, or at least make it more explicit. Could have been such a devastating but truthful story of mental health issues.
actually I thought it was a brilliant and subtle way to show depression. To a spectator, it seems so hard to understand and the behaviour seems irrational and difficult to understand. It took Harry whole summer to actually understand what happened to Sirius, to draw the conclusion of how Sirius felt and hence blame Snape for edging Sirius to the point where he didn't care. Throughout the book, Harry ignored all inclinations to Sirius's behaviour, even when he was warned by Hermoine and Molly. Denial, you may say, that's how everyone ignores depression and signs they see. But we also saw some PTSD signs in Harry, very vividly. His frustration, nightmares and recklessness made me sick, I always felt he needed therapy. But I felt it was subdued in The half-blood Prince, maybe because Dumbledore was there with him that now he knew the responsibility he had.
Anushree s i agree, the house is a personification of Sirius, he’s forced to live inside himself, and at the moment he is hating his situation and himself, just like the “house” hates it situation and itself. Imagine having to constantly face the worst part of you daily and never able to leave. I’ve always taken it as sometimes situation is and can be detrimental to someone’s mental health. I think this is then kind of what helps push Harry to where he is, he has to feel absolutely alone here even when he is not. Sirius (father figure) is treating Harry shitty but wants him to know things to suck him into it an away from Hogwarts, and Molly (mother figure) is treating Harry the best of anyone, but wants to keep him in the dark to force him out and to Hogwarts. I liked that part.

Harry had PTSD in this book after watching Cedric died. Cho was grieving because of that. You have to understand that losing someone has different effects on people. Making fun of Cho because she was crying is just so mean!!
The way she was written grieving was garbage and made her look weak there’s a way to write it and not ruin her image and that’s not what happend
Order of the Phoenix is my favorite Harry Potter novel. But you make some great points! I think I like it more just because it’s the longest, so I get the more time in the potter verse with this book. There’s plenty of other reasons I like it though.

Favourite Book: Half-Blood Prince (This book was so amazing. I can write a 750 word essay on why this is not only a great HP book, but this is masterful story writing on even higher levels.)
Worst Book: Chamber Of Secret (it didn't hold any stakes for me, I didn't care about anything that was happening in this book, but the Deathday party and Bassilisk battle was lit AF)

Order of the Phoenix is my least favorite book, but I can appreciate it for how well it portrayed Harry's growing PTSD due to the trauma he endured since book 1. Sirius's death still haunts me.
Sirius's death haunts me, too. But also all the bullies at Hogwarts (Umbitch & her Inquisitorial Squad), Harry's recurring nightmares, & Arthur getting attacked, all ruined the book for me. The Cho & Harry stuff was annoying, but not the reason I hate the book. I hate the book because of the violent parts.
It was because of this I didn't like. I felt it rushed through the development and healing of his PTSD and adolescence. He's been almost dead since book 1 and emotionally and physically abused since before the first book, he should have been showing signs of ptsd early on and we should have been exploring it from the jump and then SUDDENLY at 15 Harry's an adolescence? They all are suddenly? I wasn't happy it felt rushed and drawn out at the same time

For me, it was the book I connected with the most as a teenager when it was released. The sheer emotional ark that Harry goes through … for me, it was incredibly deep at the time that I first read it. The book completely captured the anger and resentment that teenagers go through on a daily basis, but applied it to fantastical scenarios. The injustice that many of the characters experience is also something that many teenagers identify with, regardless if real world teenagers are justified in their thinking. All of that said, now that I’m in my mid 30’s, when I reread the book now, I just find myself screaming internally for Harry to explain his feelings to the people around him in order to resolve quite a few easily fixable situations, instead of being resentful at everyone around him and exploding at everyone when he gets to a breaking point. But again, that is the mindset of a moody teenager. I will also say there are many powerful scenes that the movie completely left out, such as Harry’s rage at Dumbledore at the end of the book. In my opinion, all of the things that angered and frustrated you about the book, I feel like it was meant to make you feel just that way. The characters experienced extreme injustice and while I was frustrated with all of that while reading the book, that injustice made me feel something much deeper than the action packed film version. 🤷♂️
The long intro before going to Hogwarts made us, the reader, feel the way Harry did. We felt like we were being kept from our home. We felt obligated to understand the house because of Sirius. We got to see Molly and snape and Minerva. It was a hub to set up so many other jumping off plot points and at the same time, kept us at arm’s length the way Harry was
Overall, I like how OOTP sets up out-of-character actions because I thought the self-contradictions developed some characters more.
Hermione has been shown to be more inconvenient than helpful when she’s driven on something. The burnt-out conclusion of SPEW I thought was a funny way of showing how yet again her eager attitude can be annoying.
Cho I thought had a truthful inner-self revealed, like Sirius but to a lesser degree. I was interested in seeing how the bright, charming girl at school can quickly become moody and pitiful when undergoing life pressure.
I also enjoyed that she and Harry were able to connect as their worlds were transitioning into ‘darker times.’ Even if the relationship was pointless, people tend to seek intimacy during rough times.
Harry has shown a tendency to be isolated and cold when he’s emotional-a habit developed growing up under the stairs. But his inner rage/violence is definitely something unlike him to act on. OOTP is known to be the turning point though. And I think it’s the heightened emotions and repressed anger that cause him to lash out on Draco in both OOTP and Half-Blood Prince. The desired effect of the scary fight can be to show the true “darkness” that resides in Harry, how someone honorable and loving can become brash and harmful.
The fifth book is my favourite. I'm going to hate watching this vid. But I'm going to watch it anyway. Because you're cool. But the fifth book is still the best !

That's also partly because the adult actors are older than their book counterparts as well- Gary Oldman was in his mid-40s when the movies were made, but Sirius was supposed to be in his mid-30s and locked up since his 20s.
Harry and George beating up Malfoy was one of the best parts of the book imo.
And, I'd have a vault-full at Gringotts if I had a galleon for every time that Hermione explained you couldn't Disapparate in Hogwart's grounds.

man I don't think Hermione is dumb for trying to free the elves, I can totally empathize with her coming from the human world and seeing slavery in the present day. Instead, I think JK Rowling is dumb for having a plotline about slavery to which the resolution is basically that they all just like being slaves and they're gonna keep being slaves because of how fulfilling it is.

This is certainly the most angsty part of the overall story. It makes sense though considering the context and the feelings that Harry has at that time. Rowling draws many comparisons to Sirius, who also feels isolated, & is haunted by the memories of his childhood home (similar to the Dursleys)
Rowling thought it made sense for Sirius to be a much more brooding character as Harry would in a similar situation. Certainly lends to the feeling of isolation which the book embodies. I will say, it is the hardest one to get through, however the pay off at the end is great. A feeling of absolute despair while delivering key information, setting up the Half-Blood Prince which is my favorite book.
Very interesting point of view, especially the part with Sirius. I know the book feels boring and long but it was necessary. Harry had to go through a bad relationship to be more mature for Ginny. Ginny had to developed her confidence and power to be with harry. Also, i loved the scene with Malfoy because it showed that Harry sometimes acts like a normal teenager, of course he can get angry and of course Malfoy deserved a few more. Finally, this book changed the tone of the series, with the prophecy and the death of Sirius.

The thing is, a Harry Potter book is, among everything else it is, a teenage drama. Everyone goes through puberty (metaphorically including, maybe, some grown-ups) and in this book everyone is right in the middle of it. We also have to remember that wizards are socially behind, and in some aspects medieval. So we have to see these things play out. Our protagonists are 15.
I honestly really like how the book was written mainly because of caps lock harry. I feel like the slow pace really helps you see how he overcomes the stages of grief. It's the first book where we really see harry as a deeper character and understand his emotions. I hate hate how they portrayed Sirius though.
It's like the middle book where harry isn't a kid but he's also not a grownup who can know everything. It's also the book where Voldemort actually appears properly and where the connection between them gets more pronounced. I just think that after Cedric died some people believed him and some people didn't. It was the start of the chosen one business as the sixth book he literally is the chosen one. And beforehand he has his own problems but it's not that bad if that makes sense. So yes I agree with you how he's just a deeper character and he's like on the turning point of his life.

honestly, i think beating up draco (finally :D) was very realistic because of harry's emotional state, also the size of the department of mysteries and the fact that most of the dumbledore's army get injured and then split are also just realistic, much more than in the movies
yes, of course, the department only has prophecy and veil halls inside and 6 kids deal so well with 12 grown death eaters that they all come out uninjured, only luna has a tiny cut on her lip, very realistic, the movie destroyed these and more scenes imo

I agree with you on the issue with Harry hitting Draco. It's realistic. I mean, imagine. Your going through puberty and your summer has just gone to hell. And not to mention what things he already has to go through. And top that off with Draco bullying him for 5 years straight about his non-exsistent family, which already is a sore spot for him, of course he's going to be fed up and unfortunately this moment, he cracks.

@Fictional Subliminals I get what you're saying about Sirius' death even though I don't agree. In the book his death was kinda dubious, we don't know which spell Bellatrix casted so we don't know for sure if she killed him, all we know is that he fell in the veil and we don't really know what the veil is so there's this lingering hope that he may not be dead. Harry is so desperate and confused and even gets angry that Sirius' isn't coming out of the veil until he realizes Sirius never left him waiting and then it hits him so hard he rans after Bellatrix. I remember reading the book for the first time and just sobbing, thinking he can't de dead he can't de dead and wishing with Harry to hurt Bellatrix and frustrated that he couldn't. But this can't be shown in the movie so his death needed to be more obvious, is was visually well made and a good adaptation but not having this hope that he was alive took some of the impact for me. What I think was really powerful in the movie was that added line "nice one James", damn that was sad.

One of the reasons I love this book so much is that in this book they actually showed the faulty parts of Harry's character,while in the rest of the books it is like whatever Harry says is correct,in this book however he meses up,this book also shows the faults of other characters Like dumbledore, who even after being such a brilliant wizard with a master plan can make mistakes,it hurts makes the characters all the more humane

OOTP is my second favourite book after HBP because I love how we get all the good characters like Remus,Sirius,Tonks,LUNA,Kingsly ect. It is a very sad book though because of how Harry is feeling which is why HBP is a slightly better read for me, because there a aspects to it like harry not being in the dark anymore and Ginny making him happy. It also goes through Harry's grieving process without making it completely miserable, such as when Harry doesn't want to talk about Sirius or hear his name.

She has trauma. She just deals with it differently. While Harry only cries sometimes/rarely, she lets her tears flow.
It’s my favourite book as well but I respect your opinion. I feel like she sometimes describes things VERY detailed in this book. But I love how it deals with Harry‘s Trauma from the events of book 4
I don't know why, but I loved all these details. It really helped me to understand all the characters and how they are. But, I can relate to feeling that, sometimes, the characters didn't feel like themselves

Ootp is my favorite book of all time. It is heartbreaking but so wonderful at the same time. Also I’m a teen and let me just say that being 15 sucks and that ur always moody. 14 wasn’t like that and for me(I was extremely happy). j.k Rowling captures how u can be so happy one moment and then 2 seconds later u want to scream and kick things. Harry’s moods wings are extremely relatable.

Yeah and it's a pity, because this book has also some of the best ideas in HP story. Whole plot of Dumbledore Army was really good to read, their growth, the way Harry was enjoying all of this, scenes with Molly's boggart and Neville's parents in St. Mungo were devastating, Umbridge was brilliant villain, introducton of Luna to the story is just prfect, Department of Mysteries is good idea, I love Fred and George departure and this whole trolling and bullying Umbridge from all of students. But it all is somewhere lost, because of bad pacing. Too much of unneccessary plots.
it's funny because i remember reading somewhere that jkrowling finished writing the OoTP book then realised she left a huge hole in the plot so she had to go back and add more stuff. i think this could be why it's long because she might've added unnecessary bits she felt was needed for the plot. but obviously not many people like the book in the end 🤷🏻♀️
I think Umbridge is the main reason for the fifth book being the worst.

I agree with you on some points, especially the bit about Hermione and SPEW. I read that and could have throttled Hermione. Ron tries to set her straight, but she doesn't pick up on it at all, entirely ignoring him. She's trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist. This is just one more illustration, overdrawn no doubt, where Hermione has a lot to learn about wizarding society vs. muggle society. I only hope she wised up by the time she became Minister of Magic. Otherwise, I think her administration would have been disastrous.
I also found the Cho Chang/Harry Potter relationship highly dysfunctional. Cho was in no shape emotionally to enter into a new relationship. She should have sought out grief therapy. And Harry, bless him, just didn't have the maturity yet to handle it. That part was very frustrating to read.
Sirius' whining is understandable. I rather had a bit more sympathy toward him than I did with Cho Chang or Hermione's SPEW campaign.

She was patronizing.
Harry attacking Malfoy was not out of character at all. He’s always had a short temper throughout the books. It may not have been right but Rowling always intended to create a flawed protagonist.
I agree with all of what you said except for the fight that Harry and Draco had I would have done the same thing cuz if I lost my mom and dad it would be a very touchy subject and I would get very mad if someone who I hate started making fun of them
Last year my dad died and I to,d my friend in my lesson, and the boys behind me started laughing. J started silently crying g and they just laughed harder. I never hated anyone more in my life

The Order of the Phoenix is actually my favorite because of all of the D.A. stuff, and I love the last battle.
For real, all of the main points you discussed I actually liked, I might be biased, but with Sirius I didn't notice a change either.
