  • Kicking a field goal down by 7 points with 2 minutes left seems stupid, right? Well, not according to Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich. Because in week 4 of the 2022 NFL season against the Tennessee Titans, for some reason, he did just that. And unsurprisingly, it backfired in spectacular fashion, to the point where he now has the hottest seat of any coach in football. This is a breakdown of that dumb decision

    I don't think passing up a chance to try to convert a 4th & 21 makes this the "most foolish field goal ever." I don't think it's anywhere close to the Packers kicking against Tampa Bay in the playoffs, for example. When it's 4th & 21 there aren't a lot of good options.

      Especially when you compare it to Dan Quinn and the Falcons electing to kick a field goal a. at the 1 b. while down 4 c. with under 3 minutes left in Week 9 of 2015 against the 49ers.

      If it’s a 6-point game, I’d agree. But down 7, even if you make the field goal it adds almost nothing to your win probability because you still need a 3-and-out plus a TD anyway.
      You have nothing to lose by going for it, so you may as well, even if it seems impossible.

    • @bernieburnham
      @bernieburnham 2 роки тому +1

      @@clydemiller4776 For me, this is all about weighing up the probabilities. I think his 18% he gave in the video is far too high for that Colts offence, given that their pass catchers are essentially MPJ and the TEs, but the TEs won't get 21y+ before Ryan gets eaten alive. At least a FG means the improbable '3-and-out + TD' (or 'onside kick + TD') wins the game, whereas going for it and failing means the '3-and-out + TD' still only ties it, thus only bringing the win probability up to just under 50% (or slightly higher if you go for 2, but with the risk of immediate loss). Honestly, I think Reich's main judgment error here is overestimating his practice squad kicker. Ultimately, I would probably have gone for it, but I don't think it's monumentally stupid.

      @Danny Dolan True, but given the way Stonehouse had been flipping the field all day, even if you pinned the Titans inside the 5y line, and you make the stop, his punt back would likely leave you inside your own 40. You'd still need the stop either way, so to me, the field position is not a big enough issue to sacrifice the potential points.

      @@pronkb000 It kind of is. It was late in the game and both coaches needed a touchdown to take the lead. By kicking the field goal instead of going for it, you're either a. accepting defeat and creating ammunition for your detractors along with possibly losing the trust of your team or b. hoping that by some kind of miracle that you will recover the onside kick and score again to take the lead if the try is a success. It's a no-win situation and you never take the points in a late game situation.
      And I just remembered Matt LaFleur did the same thing in the 2020 NFC Championship but that time, a touchdown and two-point conversion were needed to tie rather than take the lead.

    Colts coulda easily just ran the ball at the 34 and 24, make it a 24-23 game, and Reich looks okay at the end of the day. Trying to be flashy when you know your offense is cold but getting gifted points is NOT the answer and him being willing to do that, to me at least, is truly dumber than even surrendering by attempting a long distance field goal with an, essentially, still brand new kicker
    Edit: and I do know Taylor fumbled that second drive but still, him being fed more in a short period means he potentially is off the field on that 3rd down carry

    • @ShrexyGuy

      @Endocher when you're in field goal range in a close game it isn't about moving the ball down field, it's about keeping the ball and keeping in range for field goals a, basically, rookie kicker can have more confidence in attempting em. Plus it'd make it a walk off field goal scenario if they get the ball back or keeps them out of a 4th and 21 and potentially simply build some momentum by getting points off their stops and TOs the first time instead of looking like they floundered thru the playbook for something that may work possibly, but most likely won't given how it looks like Reich has lost it this year and Ryans age has caught up with him

As a Colts fan I think there is better options for coach but I also think that this wasn't "The MOST FOOLISH FIELD GOAL EVER" I feel as if Franks decision to go for the field goal which was the exact yard distance he made the week prior wasn't all that bad but the fact that they had to deal with a 4th and 21 is the bad part.

  • @leehurst172
    @leehurst172 2 роки тому +2

    I'm only 7 minutes into the video but I've just gotta get this off my chest now. I'm squarely in the camp of new-age philosophy in terms of fourth down attempts and going for two. That being said, kicking this field goal is the correct decision.
    As you stated, there aren't many plays that'll net you 21 yards. If you go for it, best case scenario is that you convert and have two minutes to score your touchdown, meanwhile the Titans have three timeouts to leave time on the clock for them to possess the ball last. If you don't convert, the Titans have almost 70 yards of field to kill 2 minutes, and if they score you're down by two scores with not enough time left. Punting is just an even less favorable version of not converting on fourth down. Kicking the field goal, however, allows you to possess the ball last whether you make it or not. If made, you can either go for the win with an onside attempt, or just kick it deep and allow your defense to hold like they have been the entire second half. You've got 4 timeouts since we're on the plus side of two minutes, and if the Titans manage to put up a field goal you're still only down one score AND you possess the ball last. Missing the field goal gives the Titans only 60 yards to kill two minutes or score again. If they break your defense, then nothing has changed because it's the same as not converting on 4th down. Except there's likely to be more time on the clock because they have a shorter field to work with because of the field goal attempt. The math changes if this decision came while under two minutes. But in this scenario, this is the winning play. The object of the game of football is not to score more points than your opponent -- it's having possession of the ball when the clock hits double zeroes.

If they kick the field goal, the bills likely get the ball back at their own 25, and they would play for the win rather than kneeling at the 1 for the field goal. From how the bills moved the ball in the 2nd half, the bills likely would have drove down the field just like they did in their actual last drive, and would have gone for the touchdown instead of the field goal.

    If you have followed the Colts for the past few decades (I have been following them since 1976), you would know that their offensive lines have had trouble getting pushes to convert 4th and 1s. Refer to, for starters, to the game last week against the Chiefs where Taylor was absolutely stuffed on a 4th and less than 1, and this week with Taylor fumbling on a short yardage situation, where there was no hole to be found. So, a 4th and 21 is pretty much beyond the realm of possibility unless you are hoping for a pass interference call. This is not Manning and Wayne, Harrison and Clark.
    Also, that 4th and 4 that they went for against the Texans in 2019, had to be one of the dumbest play calls I had seen in ALL my years watching Colts football. The Colts had staged a huge rally to tie the game and actually probably would have won the game if a wide open Mo-Allie Cox (who was a raw rookie I believe that year) had not dropped a short pass from Luck that would have kept a drive alive earlier in OT.
    The immediate and logical reply to Reich's comment after that game as to why he went for it - "We are playing to win, not tie" - would have been: "Fine, but that does not mean you have to needlessly lose a game in trying to achieve that goal...while also putting a division rival back in the division race, where to that point, they had ZERO wins!"

    That being said that game really showed that we need to get rid of the GM because we DO NOT HAVE good WRs. Nobody to throw ball to in endzone which is why we can't get touchdowns reliably.

    Did you see the bears decide to punt it on 4th and 1, at mid field, down 2 scores and with about 2 min left in the 4th quarter? I would argue that decision is even more egregious than this one as even if you don't get the 1 yard you still have to rely on your defense to make a stop so punting accomplishes nothing more than losing time and timeouts.

There’s a rebuild coming in Indianapolis and he realizes that he will not be overseeing it. The writing is on the wall and he’s holding the crayon. The Colts were really in a no man's land here. If they had a good kicker (they don't), then this decision is okay. But you're needing almost everything to go right...convert long FG with practice squad kicker, 3-and-out from defense against Derrick Henry, and a touchdown drive on next possession. I get why the Colts did what they did but I think I would've just taken a shot on 4th and 21...relying on one prayer instead of three. Tennessee was having serious trouble covering their TEs and Farley/Mitchell are terrible outside corners.
    Completely unrelated, but I was hoping for a fair catch kick at end of regulation in NE vs GB game.

    6:38 into this video the score is 24-17 Titans, 4th & 21 for the Colts on the Titans' 33, and the Colts have 3 times out left and the Titans haven't scored all half.
    I think the field goal is the correct choice. Even if the field goal is not made, there is a good chance the Colts get the ball back and have time to score a touchdown.
    The odds of picking up a first down are less than 18%. Remember, it's the Colts. So going for it on 4th & 21 is equivalent to missing the field goal.
    Going for it is NOT your only option. Hoping for a penalty to bail you out is not rational.
    You are correct about Derrick Henry and Tannehill had a great game too. But going for it on 4 & 21 is much less likely than attempting the field goal.
    You don't have to try for the on-side kick, if the field goal is good.
    If you get the field goal and touchdown, you win.
    If you get the touchdown and go into overtime, you likely lose.
    So, if you go for it on 4th & 21 and score the touchdown, you have to go for the 2-point conversion, with less than a 50% of converting, whereas the field goal had a 57% chance of converting.
    I would kick the field goal. I think the punt is a good choice, too.
    I have a master's degree in Statistics.

    Overdramatize much? A large part of your argument is based on the assumption that the Colts would have attempted an onside kick had the field goal been successful. I firmly believe Reich planned to kickoff deep. A quick defensive stop would have obviously then been necessary, but with a made field goal, a late TD gets you the win instead of just a chance for one in OT.
    I’m not saying I agree with Reich’s decision, but calling this the “most foolish field goal ever” seems little more than click-bait and you’re better than that.

    The defense for Indy in the first half was really sad, I think you had two fumbles and interception , Tennessee played big defense in the second half when they needed to. The coach on one call did not cost you the game he never should have been in that position. The team put him there and there's no way Tennessee is going to allow anyone to be open anywhere near the end zone in the last play. Suck it up buttercup that's four in a row to Tennessee. That decision wasnt actually that bad. His play calling has been horrible and he’s made a ton of bad 4th down decisions, but that wasnt one of them. It was 4th and 25 i believe, no way Matt was going to get time to throw a 25 yard pass in that spot, even of the o-line was playing great, ot would have been an all out blitz. They had three timeouts plus the 2 minute warning, if the defense does its job you get the ball back with about 1:30 to get a go ahead score. I have to disagree here.
    I mean the reason they had 4th and 15 as the alternative to the onside kick is because the conversion ratios were about the same.
    Issue reallt is you need to rush the kicking team on there and kick on or before 208. Kicking it with 208 means that the next play is at 203 meaning you should get the 2 min warning if you fail the onside kick. if you get 3 and out you get the ball back down 4 or 7 with a timeout.

      You get the ball back WHERE down by 4 or 7 with a timeout? As mentioned in the video, after the 3 and out by the Titans, they punt the ball. The Colts then must go the length of the field to score a touchdown. Thank goodness they still have that timeout though.
      A Titans three and out by a Colts punt inside the ten is better than a three and out from a missed field goal at the 41 or a failed onside kick on your own 45.

    • @Rockhound6165
      @Rockhound6165 2 роки тому

      @@pace1195 Let's look at the scenarios and how they might turn out:
      Go for it: It was 4th and 21. The probability of converting was slim to none. The best you can hope for is to gain 10+ yards and hope your defense forces a 3 and out. Worse case scenario is an interception or a sack(happened on the previous play) or an incompletion but there's probably a 98% probability you are losing possession of the ball.
      Punt: This seems to be the consensus but you're punting from the 33. Sure you can let the play clock run down and go back to the 38 but that isn't much better. A punt from this close has a real good probability of being a touchback and the Titans get the ball at the 20 but the probability of pinning them back inside the 10 from this distance isn't likely even for Ray Guy. Then you have the probability of a bad snap. A block isn't likely as Haack has only had 1 punt blocked in his career.
      FG Try: This is what they did. Make it and you're down 4 with over 2 minutes left, the 2 minute warning coming up, and all 3 timeouts. After a kickoff it's more than likely going to be a touchback and be brought to the 25. If you make it, you're down 4 and if your opponent doesn't get a first down you're going to get the ball back with a lot of time left with a chance to win. The worse case scenario is missing, which they did.
      In short, there's really no good choice here. Just one slightly better than the other. It's not a dumb decision to try a FG. The dumb decisions were after getting to the 22 yard line and not trying to move the ball forward. The out pass on 2nd down was extremely stupid.

    • @pace1195
      @pace1195 2 роки тому

      @@Rockhound6165 For the Colts to get the ball back, the Titans must punt or have a very unfortunate turnover unless you control your destiny and go for it.
      So, let’s say Titans gain 0 to 9 yards on a 3 and out and punt the NFL average of 45 yards. Where do the Colts start their final drive with at most one time out? Remember the Colts still need a touchdown no matter what.
      - Colts punt at or inside the 20. Range: [20+9] 29+45 = Your 26 to 35.
      - Colts successful field goal + long kick off touchback at the 25. Range: [25+9] 34+45 = Your 21 to 30.
      - Colts incomplete pass on 4th down at the 33. Range: [33+9] 42+45 = Your 13 to 22. Any successful yardage less than a first down is an arm punt.
      - Colts 8 yard sack like the last play at the 41. Range: [41+9] 50+45 = Your 5 to 14 (maybe the 20)
      - Colts failed field goal at the 41. Range: [41+9] 50+45 = Your 5 to 14 (maybe the 20)
      - Colts successful field goal + unsuccessful onside kick at about the Colts 45 to 50. Range: Inside your 20 provided the Titans don’t try a 54 to 63 yard field goal themselves.
      - Colts successful field goal + successful onside kick at about the Colts 45 to 50. Field goal attempt with that kicker = 57% (10:29) TIMES successful onside kick = 9.6% (12:04) EQUALS a 5.5% chance of this option working. This option is at least 17 yards farther away from a touchdown with less time and is over 3x less likely than attempting the 4th and 21 at an 18% (8:45) success rate.
      So, what is the correct choice: punt, field goal attempt, or go on 4th and 21?
