That play sums up being a Saints fan. The XP didn't get blocked. He just flat out missed it. And that was when they were still kicking from the 2 yard line. If we win that game in OT. we're in the playoffs that year.

The NFL has done an incredible job of keeping alive games from years ago. Restoration and preserving old media is extremely difficult to do, but games from 50+ years ago can still be seen today in great condition. My dad and I enjoy watching games that he went to live, and that is done by the conservation efforts of NFL.
It is mostly because of the "NFL Films" organization.

The immaculate reception is a perfect mix of quick thinking and luck. Rip Franco and fly high knowing you made the greatest play of all time
and possibly ref ball... but what would the NFL be without plays that ride the gray area fringe of their rulebook.
(For those who don't know at the time of this play if the ball ricochets off the steeler player and not the raider Franco can't legally catch the ball and advance it. for it to be a legal catch it needs to clearly hit the Raiders defender. Of course its also sick reflexes and awareness by Franco because if he dived to make that catch he'd also have been down by the rules of the time and also couldn't advance so his awareness here is incredible.)
@@rockstermaniac if you can't tell who it hit off 50 years later with several replay angles then they definitely couldn't tell live. Simple physics are in favor of the ball going off the raiders defender because there's no way a ball bounces that hard off of a player running the other way as opposed to directly at the ball.

Miracle in the meadowlands with desean Jackson will forever be one of the greatest football moments I’ve seen. everything leading up to it, plus the fact that the initial bobble of the punt allowed for the PERFECT route to be taken. If he caught it and started running earlier he surely would have been tackled

This play led to one of the many 'Raider Rules' in the NFL rulebook. Namely, only the fumbling player can recover and advance a fumble within the last two minutes of the game. Otherwise, it is returned to the spot of the fumble.....all thanks to the Holy Roller.

I feel like Kyler gets so much credit for The Hail Murray. He did a great job getting out of pressure and making that heave but Hopkins made that play what it was. Four defenders and he caught that over all of them. DHop deserves more credit for that one. Call it the the “Hop Mary” lol
I always felt that the QB gets too much credit for successful Hail Marys. The QB is tossing it up there hoping for a miracle. The receiver really is the one who’s making the play happen being able to come down with an “anyone’s ball” kind of catch.
During the third Miracle at the Meadowlands, you can see the Giants coach furiously throwing his play sheets to the ground as Jackson runs on by.
Watching the "River City Relay" I kept thinking to myself, I remember this play and it was awesome but why do I feel like something terrible is about to happen?

This really highlights the evolution of the kicking position. 47 yards was the longest of his career and thats barely a challenging kick nowdays.
For Scott Norwood? That was to be his longest on grass. Except for Miami, everyone in the AFC East was on turf and that was with 5 teams in the division. A lot more turf, and flat carpet turf, back then.
Soccer-style kickers increased accuracy, but moving the hashmarks in and creating rules that have made it almost impossible to block kicks has also given kickers less to think about=cooled, if not eliminated, pressure, and has driven percentages up, although, they've dropped in the last couple of pro football seasons. Increasing the height of the uprights has also helped expand the target for kickers, and made it much easier for officials to determine if a kick is good or no good. Beginning in the mid to late '60's the NFL also began putting two officials under the goalposts on FGs and PATS..
Better grass and no baseball dirt has also improved kicking surfaces, as have no-wind and no- elements domed/retractable roof stadiums..

There is no comparison of the kickers of the past to now. You are exactly correct. Check out the 1979 Super Bowl PIT VS LA RAMS Matt Bahr kicks a 41 yard field goal in that game and it BARELY makes it over the crossbar.

Interesting about the Seahawks "Fail Mary" is that those were back-up referees since the main refs were on strike at that time. Lots of folks think maybe this oddball call helped drive up pressure for the league to make a deal because the normal refs were back pretty soon after.
You know…I just still don’t see how Seahawks even won that. I mean the DB had possession of it from the jump to the way down. Every questionable call the seahawks were involved with, it always went there way. It’s getting a little suspicious.

The fact that the Packer had the ball and wasn't juggling it with sole possession as he was going down, is irrelevant.
The catch is not completed until the player has completely gone to the ground with possession.
As it was, just before the time the defensive player who initially had a clean hold on the ball hit the ground and came to a stop, the SEAHAWKS receiver reached in and got his hands on the ball BEFORE the PACKER co-receiver hit the ground, --not landing on players who were on the ground under him or landing with two feet while his body was still moving to the ground, actually touching the ground in- bounds and coming to a stop either on his own or by being forced to by contact with a defender-- the Packer touching the ball was not fully stopped on the ground. Since the offense had full control of the ball last and both players, one on each side had control of the ball when the PACKER d-back hit the ground, dual possession goes to the team that last had full possession, that was SEATTLE just before the ball was grabbed in midair by GBAY..
If the PACKER had controlled the ball all the way to the ground before the Seahawk reached in, it would have been a pick.
Watch the replay, again.
It was a correct call, and after that official took abuse and was not retained once the regular officials came back, as some of the replacements were when hired as backups, he went into deep depression, had suicidal thoughts, etc.
The wrong description of that play has ruined his life.

BUT..the rulebook was clear(its been changed somewhat since= no longer does a receiver have to establish that he is a receiver, then a runner, he can both= catch in one motion while moving the ball on a lunge, and its a catch as long as he has control while opposition contact is made as he is lunging forward while going to the ground= DEZ BRYANT RULE..
back then..that was not the case=1. Receiver first, 2. then.. Runner second) and the ref still got it right.

I've always considered Desean Jackson's punt return touchdown the 4th Miracle at the Meadowlands. Brian Westbrook did the same back in 2003. I guess it's because it wasn't the last play of the game and the Eagles had to defend their lead for a minute, but to me at 7 years old, jumping up and down with buffalo sauce smeared on my face while my parents were screaming like they just hit the lottery, it sure felt like a miracle moment.
I was at a movie (agreed to go before the game was scheduled) with Merrill Reese in an earbud when BWest broke that return. I still remember fist pumping silently while Ben Stiller did something at a museum on screen.
That game was a turning point in our season, and that play was a godsend in a game where our offense was totally hapless, I 100% agree that that's a part of the miracle at the Meadowlands series.

I was at the Beastquake game. We were the 7-9 NFC West champions and got to host vs the defending SB Champion New Orleans Saints. Obviously people thought it was a ridiculous rule. But regardless I was able to buy 2 tickets and took my wife to her first Seahawks game. And when Marshawn Lynch broke that run off in the 2nd half the place went absolutely crazy!!! Watching that play still gives me goosebumps 10+ years later 😊

I believe that was his 3rd or 4th miss of the game. And he had a doink earlier. I just remember him missing short to medium kicks the whole game. That was why Nagy had such a dejected look at the end

He did however have like 8 field goal tries hit the upright throughout the rest of the season. Just not that game.

Vikings Blair Walsh's kick against Seattle was still the worst I've ever seen. The sad part is when he lined up for a 27 yarder, us Vikings fan knew it was 50/50 if he'd make it. What a way to lose a playoff game at home. And dumb Zimmer still kept Walsh around the entire next season where he continued to dissapoint.

As a NYG Fan, from 1982, when I got home from the Navy, until I die, I've had it pretty good. We went to 5 SB's and won four. Three of them went down to the last play. Helmet catch is still a hilarious moment in our family's history. The rest of the family still jokes about how nuts I was. Never gets old.

I’m glad the “pick at the stick” was on here. That’s when I was the most die hard watching every second of every Niner game. That was the last game ever at Candlestick. Seemed like the Niners were about to choke because the Falcons were just making their way downfield at will. And for Navarro Bowman to take it all the way back was a perfect ending for an amazing stadium
I still think it should be criminal that they tore it down. I refuse to believe that they couldn't have renovated it to be a gem like Lambeau, Wrigley, or Fenway.

I’ll never forget the Philly special. I had to work that night, but being just outside Philly, not a damn lick of work was done in those final minutes of the game.
That was a great time in Philly. No one arguing, no one fighting, just a lot of high fives, and a lot of happy tears.
The original "The Catch" is obviously NFL history, but man The Catch II story to me is at least within that game so much more meaningful. Owens one of the greatest WR...only just establishing himself as the 49ers premier receiver at this point in his career, but he'd been VERY reliable during the season. This game he just dropped pass after pass and yet when the time came..game on the line...Mariuicci and Young still had faith in him and despite it being an incredibly tough catch in traffic being hit from all sides...he made it and held on. On top of that, while the Cowboys will always be THE historical arch rival that I love to watch the 49ers beat, the Packers at the time had bounced us from the playoffs three years in a row and it was looking like it could be a fourth till this. At least for this 49er fan, that is the best of the three by far.
This was one of the first games I ever saw as a kid and man, that catch... made me love TO for the rest of time.

As a Saints fan, most of the last 10 years have been nothing but pain. I firmly believe that in almost every other parallel universe, Diggs is tackled and the game ends there. In almost every other parallel universe, pass interference gets called, the Saints take a knee on four downs and win the game and go back to the Super Bowl which doesn’t end up being a snooze fest. Just sucks man.

Need to look at all the angles. There was a great picture in the Seattle papers the next day, taken from behind the end zone, showing the Seahawk’s receivers left hand firmly clutching the ball, between the ball and the defender’s chest. He had possession with that hand and never let go. Simultaneous catch goes to the offense.
Was it from a camera that was available to the refs?
Don’t forget the refs decided not to call Tate pushing Sam Shields (Packers CB) causing Offensive PI. That game sent the NFL into uproar, and they admitted it was an interception, giving GB the very elated win
Man....I still get goosebumps when I watch the Music City Miracle. I remember it like it was yesterday when Mike Keith yelled "There are NO FLAGS ON THE FIELD". I had a feeling something big was going to happen.....and it definitely did. But I had to laugh when they showed the one yard short right after 😅
And in between those games, the Titans came to Indy and ran up and down the field against my Colts!! Funny that instant replay was put back in that year so they could actually review the lateral and see it was correct
Yea i used to think it was a forward pass til i looked where the ball was instead of the player, where the ball is is what counts and it went back about 2 inches...it was indeed a lateral
