The thing I remember most of Hurricane Ivan literally not going away. It went out back to the Atlantic only to circle back and hit Texas as a Tropical Storm. It was crazy to say the least.
I remember that weekend, I was starting middle school and pumped for the 04 season and my grandmother and cousin evacuated from Key West to spend the night at my family’s house in Augusta, it was a start of a long season for the Dolphins.
This is unreal--Every PR team should watch this video to explain exactly how NOT to do something. Wow, this was just the worst PR nightmare, but it was all their fault due to the lack of communication poor communication is beyond words. Arguable, the worst "messaging" ever. Great reporting on this story.
They had to deal with Hurricanes from the last preseason game to that game against the Steelers that got moved to Sunday night. Communication does matter.
One of my friends went for training for a PR position in his company and they used an example of this situation (of course this was well before this video was made) with the Dolphins from 2004 as an example of what NOT to do.
Fun fact, Joe Robbie/Pro Player/Land Shark/Sun Life/Dolphin/Dolphins/New Miami/Hard Rock Stadium was literally built on an Indian burial ground. I guess that explains why the Miami Dolphins are so terrible. They are literally cursed.
I am a lifelong dolphin fan since the early 80s. I have lived in south fla (miami) my whole life... And jesus I have absolutely no memory of this or hurricane Ivan. AT ALL
Nice Rapper’s Delight reference! Ricky Williams left the Dolphins before the season. I wonder if he gave Eddie Jones a hit of…his sandwich on the way out.
I was going to say the same. The preceding off season was a disaster with the worst part coming when Ricky decided it wasn’t worth it and left to live in a tent in India. We got the second overall pick after that season and took Ronnie Brown. A good player but we could have taken Aaron Rodger’s.
I feel like "No Comment" would have been a better answer. It conveys the same meaning, but it at least implies that they have a good answer, they just don't want to give it.
When I was in Middle School we had the opposing team show up a day before the game after driving all the way across the state (New Mexico, so it takes forever) I still can't believe a miscommunication like that could even happen. They wound up just canceling the game too
As a Titans fan who has to use Sunday Ticket to watch all the games, what I remember is that directv and the nfl only allowed viewers in the local Miami and Tennessee markets see that rescheduled game. I tried to get a 1/16th refund to no avail.
This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made a video describing the 1961 Sports Broadcasting Act and how it led the NFL to consider regularly playing on Tuesday night.
I've been looking for the footage of that Eddie Berlin swinging gate touchdown for years. I don't know how you found it, unless you somehow archived it, but I really appreciate that you have it here. EDIT: Also, fuck playing in Miami. Shit always seems to happen.
Assuming of course, upper management had agreed to that. Sometimes the pr guy is hamstrung by stupidity higher up the chain of command. If dolphins ownership doesn't know the answer, then pr is hosed.
I sure hope Eddie Jones did not get a script for this and this was all off the cuff. Everyone should have known these questions would come. If not, the entire PR team should have been sacked. The response was worse than if you spiked the ball on every single play.
I wonder if the move to Saturday was the reason for the unusual announcer pairing. Back then Dan Dierdorf's regular partner was Dick Enberg but he did US Open Tennis. The season before Dierforf was paired with Verne Lundquist for Week 1. In the 506 Forums page it doesn't show Lundquist working any college games that wekeend in 2004 but it turns out that CBS had Dierdorf work with Todd Blackledge.
If I remember correctly (it was a long time ago), Verne, who lived in Colorado, wasn't able to get to Miami in time for the game because of flight cancellations caused by the incoming storm. Blackledge lived in the East and was closer so he was able to get down there.
What happened in 2004, was it a Southern-style Saturday night, but does the two NFL teams, the Miami Dolphins (which they belong in the AFC East Division) and the Tennessee Titans (which they belong in the AFC South Division) have Southern roots? However, it was Dave Wannstedt's fifth and final NFL season as a head coach, his 11th overall and it makes me want to eat a deep fried chicken sandwich with lettuce, ranch and yellow American cheddar cheese and French fries with ketchup.
Ricky "retired" when he realized his coach I am become Waanstedt (the destroyer of football teams) was planning to run him 500 times and had zero plans for improving the passing offense beyond trading for crappy A.J. Feeley. This was the year the Dolphins front office lost all the remaining good PR and reputation that had been built during the Shula years.
The first and last season opener I couldn’t watch because directv Sunday ticket wouldn’t broadcast the game, it’s fine because 2004 was year 1 of 2 decades of dolphins being irrelevant
This game and the Jones foul up would be the end of the Miami Dolphins being a gold standard team. The Dolphins had gone from 1970-2003 with having two losing seasons in that 33 year span but 2004 saw the Dolphins go to 4-12 which was their worst record since 1969 and since the Jones fiasco the Dolphins have had only 5 winning seasons since.
Also keep in mind that Florida had been hit by Hurricanes Charlie and Frances just the previous month. Needless to say folks throughout Florida were on edge. That said, every time I hear A.J. Feeley's name in any context makes me think of the South Park episode where Cartman complains "I got a crappy A.J. Feeley again".
As a dolphins fan I remember disliking Fiedler. But for 15 years after him I wished we kept him after seeing our qb play . It was a tough gig following Marino; noone was going to be good enough.
13:57
The moment you all came for.
He should make a shirt with a picture of a shit qb on it with the saying on the bottom. Lol
He needs to get that trademarked
He already has a 39.6 shirt.
11:02 Nice Pitbull reference
The thing I remember most of Hurricane Ivan literally not going away. It went out back to the Atlantic only to circle back and hit Texas as a Tropical Storm. It was crazy to say the least.
That Dolphins President would make a great politician.
11:03 If your girl starts acting up, then you take her friend.
As a lifelong Florida resident, such ineffective communication would drive me nuts.
"In life, it is important to communicate, and I think that goes without saying."
I really want to believe that you meant to be funny there.
I remember that weekend, I was starting middle school and pumped for the 04 season and my grandmother and cousin evacuated from Key West to spend the night at my family’s house in Augusta, it was a start of a long season for the Dolphins.

LOL!
This makes me wonder if any reporters there were like, "answer the [damn] question!" because HOLY CRAP! This was awful!
I remember this so weird!
Ah now it makes sense.
Cool to see old Joe Robbie in its baseball configuration (I know it's Hard Rock Stadium, but I still prefer the original name of the stadium).
I am a lifelong dolphin fan since the early 80s.

I miss Mayor Adam West on Family Guy, great video tho. I'm not a huge football fan but these videos are pretty interesting
Should've just answered "nine-eleven" to every question. Worked for Lois Griffin.
Alabama rescheduled a game in 1988 against Texas A&M due to Hurricane Gilbert which never even made it to College Station.
Ben got his very first start in a monsoon in miami
Simple answer should be...
Whoever bought tickets have an option of refund or switch it to a future Dolphins game
Assuming of course, upper management had agreed to that. Sometimes the pr guy is hamstrung by stupidity higher up the chain of command. If dolphins ownership doesn't know the answer, then pr is hosed.
Ivan was a powerful one that did heavy inland damage. Still a record for 24hr rainfall in Pittsburgh with major flooding of the rivers.
I sure hope Eddie Jones did not get a script for this and this was all off the cuff. Everyone should have known these questions would come. If not, the entire PR team should have been sacked. The response was worse than if you spiked the ball on every single play.
That was the year Florida kept getting hit by hurricanes

phins BLOW. phins were in the midst of their usual post marinoroller coaster at qb once again with thejay's-a j huggy feeley and jay fiedler.

I object this video as it doesn't describe one of the most important reasons for the Dolphins lost.
Ricky Williams didn't play!
Ricky "retired" when he realized his coach I am become Waanstedt (the destroyer of football teams) was planning to run him 500 times and had zero plans for improving the passing offense beyond trading for crappy A.J. Feeley.

@@xeutoniumnyborg1192 regardless he didn’t play in 2004 which made the team worse
BC beat Penn State and Rutgers fell to 1-AA New Hampshire. Helluva Saturday.
The first and last season opener I couldn’t watch because directv Sunday ticket wouldn’t broadcast the game, it’s fine because 2004 was year 1 of 2 decades of dolphins being irrelevant

Boy they were off when and where it was going, because hit Alabama I think it was on a Thursday. I know because I live in the Florida Panhandle.
Did NFL Network run this game?
CBS did.
You forgot to mention that Ricky Williams retired before the preseason.
Seeing the Titans logo on the thumbnail, I wouldn’t be surprised if their comm team did some shit as well (Especially under Bud Adams)
Also keep in mind that Florida had been hit by Hurricanes Charlie and Frances just the previous month. Needless to say folks throughout Florida were on edge.

Eddie Jones should have stuck to basketball, lol
Are you saying he was feeling too much Heat?
As a dolphins fan I remember disliking Fiedler. But for 15 years after him I wished we kept him after seeing our qb play . It was a tough gig following Marino; noone was going to be good enough.
Lmao Fiedler was awful and if miami had an even marginally good qb in the early aughts they could have been contenders
Fan friendly is not a term used to describe the Miami NFL franchise!
9:25 JUST LIKE DEMOCRATS
I'm early, yes!!!
outstanding!!!
