Whenever Tesla issues a recall, the news love to make a big story out of it, and it happened again when Tesla just issued a recall for over 362,000 vehicles due to a potential safety issue with their Full Self-Driving Beta software. All the Tesla owners who have FSD beta software opted in at their discretion AND the software is expected to continually fix bugs through updates so this is normal, which begs the question: should a software update fix like this be labeled as a recall?
Recent leaks of Tesla's upcoming Hardware 4 self-driving computer show that it’s expected to provide ten times the processing power of the current hardware 3 chip, which will enable more advanced features needed for Tesla’s journey to achieve full self-driving capability. With the 3 additional cameras that are rumored to be located on the front bumper, which would be the first time we’ve seen front bumper cameras on a Tesla, along with the new HD radar for seeing blind spots, this new hardware 4 could very well finally bring us the highly requested "bird's eye view" feature. My 2018 Model 3 came with hardware 2.5, and at the time Tesla said that would be enough to handle full self-driving, but a couple years later Tesla announced hardware 3 which effectively left all of us FSD owners with hardware 2.5 saying “Uh, so we’re getting this new hardware 3 for free, right?” Either way, owners who bought FSD capability should absolutely be entitled to whatever hardware is physically necessary to unlock full self driving whenever it is ready so I expect retrofits to happen or a big liability for Tesla if hardware 3 isn’t capable.
For the first time, Tesla will open a portion of its US Superchargers to non-Tesla EVs, making at least 7,500 chargers available for all EVs by the end of 2024 by adding the new Magic Dock adapter to the stalls. It’s great for Tesla as a company because not only will they save a ton of money by allowing the government to help fund the expansion of the Supercharger network but Tesla can charge a fee for non-Tesla vehicles to charge. If that’s not enough, some better news is that Tesla recently reduced the price of their CCS adapter by $75 so if you’re a Tesla owner who doesn’t have one of these, you may want to pick one up because this will allow you access to even more fast charging stations. I bought one of these last year and haven’t yet had the need to use it but who knows: a year or two from now there may be a time when charging at a CCS station will be cheaper and/or more convenient than at a Supercharger, depending on the pricing and demand. Speaking of Supercharging, Tesla sent out an email last week to current Model X and Model S owners offering them to give up their unlimited free Supercharging miles in exchange for an additional $5,000 on the vehicle’s trade-in value when they purchase a new Model S or X. This is probably in response to the new changes to the Supercharger network that we just talked about - opening it up to non-Tesla EVs.

I think more important to many recent Tesla owners is "When will Tesla provide the Parking Assist software to replace the ultrasonic sensors they eliminated. Currently there's no capability to tell how close you are to your garage wall or anything else that's in front, to the side or behind when you're parking your car.
I noticed that when I was test driving a new Model Y - it's crap that they didn't sort this.
They should have sorted this BEFORE removing the ultrasonic sensors. Also, HW4 is going to open them up to class action lawsuits based on FSD advertising with HW3.
@@StormsparkPegasus Exactly! It's ridiculous that they removed the hardware prior to having the software.
@@Resist4 They're really opening themselves up to lawsuits for false advertising.
It's crazy. I test drove a Y early 2022. I asked about warnings before hitting things when my wife was parking. They demonstrated it to me. We ordered from our phone right after the test drive. Picked up first week of Dec 22. Pulling in the garage and nothing. Sent a message to Tesla only to find out that the Y we received doesn't have it and we need to wait for a future update. WTF? How do they get away with this BS?
Full Self Driving................. the dream that's always 6 months away!
FSD. Future Self Driving 😅
Recall refers to recalling the vehicle back to the dealer for the repair or inspection, if you don’t have to bring the vehicle back to the dealer how is it recalled.
Great #Tesla Content
I love tesla but tbh RECALL is the correct term. It sounds better than “Software Recall” because that would single out tesla. I mean, they are taking back or deleting vital software that directly controls major systems. Recall in the automotive industry means the manufacturer has to repair potentially serious/dangerous issues with their vehicles. Just because a repair can be done via internet does not mean the vehicle isn’t being repaired or that the issue was not serious. Many manufacturers have had recalls for 20 minute computer updates, only difference is that they have had to be done at the dealer, doesn’t mean a new - potentially worse sounding term should be coined
"Required update" is a suitable term.
As I detailed recently, it's DIFFERENT from the Toyota "losing drive(!) issue" flagged last week which requires a software update *At a dealer*
In other words a "RECALL" to a specific place (not the owners home) for modification?
Only thing missing is a heads up display. Surprised they dont have one, makes things a million times safer too, not just convenient.
10s maybe 100s of options for after market head up displays
@@ludlud89 Ya but most of them are a plastic screen in front of you, I don't think any of them project information onto the windshield.
Hi Andy - regarding parking sensors: my 2023 MY does not have parking sensors so will there be an over the air update for the car's camara's to become the "parking sensors" and also have overhead view of car?
Should we "recall" our cell phones when we get updates????
I wish they would recall all Teslas for phantom braking. I am feed up .
Literally my only complaint on fsd. It’s annoying, embarrassing and unsafe.
Dr. Know it all was saying with the next update there should be less phantom braking. Very interesting video.
Will Tesla vision replace uss in vehicles that don’t have fsd ? Please let me know . Thanks
1:45 They should probably call it something like "need to be fixed". For some it would be a recall for others just an OTA.
If tesla issue that is remedied as recall then iphone, ioad and macs are recalled several times a year
We drove our Model Y from Indianapolis to Mesa AZ and only had to wait for a Tesla supercharger 2 times, both in New Mexico, but only for 5 to 10 minutes. A different story in Mesa. At our local Mesa Tesla supercharger, we have had to wait 4 times for an average of 10 minutes each time. At home, charging is no issue, but on the road and in a rental home it is a big deal. If wait time to charge becomes the norm (opening other EVs to use Tesla charger) while on the road we will go back to ICE. Update - We had to charge at the Tesla Supercharger in Mesa 2/22/23, we got the last station available, 20 minutes later there was 3 Tesla's waiting to charge. Not sure how long the wait would be if all EV could use Tesla Chargers. Love the Model Y but waiting on charging could make us change back to ICE. No need to have a 70K car that you can only use around home, we will go back to our $35K Honda CRV that we can travel with and use at home.
Will Tesla all show the CCS chargers?
Thanks.
all hardware upgrades should be able to be done in all cars not only new, So advanced autonomous driving can be feasible. At leadt all new cars should place the computers in a easy location for swapping
Andy; like you i have a 2018 LR model 2 which came with proximity alerts. We just bought like you a model Y for my wife and it does not have the proximity alerts,. Any idea when they will send an update to enable that feature through the camera's?
No one but Tesla knows the answer to this.
All owners with free supercharging should also be allowed to keep free charging for an additional $5,000 on the purchase of a new Tesla S or X.
Hence, you get paid $5,000 to give it up or you pay $5,000 extra to keep it.
As always outstanding information! I appreciate your ongoing updates. I do agree that the term recall is not accurate for what Tesla can do with a software update.
Question. Can I pair my car key with multiple phones?
If I had free supercharging, I would never charge anywhere else than at a supercharger
And your battery health would degrade faster, due to the faster charging speeds.
Yes, for the recall. If it is something that is a safety issue then I think recalls are appropriate.
My dear husband drives an ICE, "safety" recalls to him the car is taken to a service center and left there for a day or a week while he's trying to get an answer as to when will the "safety"recall may get fixed. On my Tesla "safety" recall", I just push the software update on my phone then get up in the morning to reboot the car and that's it. I don't care who says it is a "safety"recall when it's simply a software update to fix bugs just like what I type on my Mac when it does a software update.
'Update' seems a more appropriate term than 'recall', if the problem is a software issue rather than a mechanical one.
Yes, I agree, but the term "recall" has a legal definition and is the only mechanism NHTSA has to force a manufacturer to take an action. It also removes Tesla's liability for the removal of features or equipment from a car. NHTSA needs to add "software update" as an enforceable action.
The media makes a huge deal out of every action or incident while failing to say that Tesla has a much better safety record than a human driver alone.
We've got both a 2021 VW ID4 and a 2022 Tesla Model 3. We mainly charge them both at home. While our VW has 3 years of free, unlimited charging at any Electrify America DCFC station, we rarely use it as we charge the car mainly at home. A cash offer in place of that free charging incentive we were given as an incentive to buy the car back in 2021 would be welcome. While I'm not thrilled with the SuperChargers being opened up to CCS vehicles to use (one trip to an Electrify America in a Walmart parking lot on a busy weekend will show you why) because of the insanity the goes on there, as long as current SuperCharger stations aren't retrofitted to accept them, it should be manageable. Looking forward to what the near future brings for EVs.
I will be in need of a new car by the first of June this year as my private lease contract will end by then. And I calculated that in my situation going fully electric would be the best choice. Currently looking at buying either a Model 3 Long Range, a Model Y Long Range or perhaps a Polestar 2 Long Range. The Model Y seems like a good choice for me but I am worried about buying a FSD Tesla with HW3 if HW4 is right around the corner without a possibility for a retrofit. I wonder when HW4 cars will start being produced and shipped, perhaps that will take a year?
Which one you finally bought?
Great info, well presented, well paced, Andy! As always…
hi, I have tesla model 3 2022 and I am having so much sqeeking sound from dont know where, do you think its need seat adjustment?
Meh. I've been waiting for the CCS retrofit, but those appointments still haven't opened up.
I can’t even find that CCS adapter in my Tesla app.
They still haven't contacted me about the rear camera issue. Elon said they were going to fix service, but it still hasn't happened.
All Teslas outside the USA come with the CCS charger. At least in Europe where this is the one and only standard in all cars.
I agree with Elon on the recall issues if it is a OTA software update is not a physical recall
Yep great deal.
Holding off buying a model y until it ships with hardware 4.
Those people who have trouble parking with the current Tesla cameras, aren't gonna be able to park any better with a bird's eye view.
Hardware 3 - is 10001% NOT getting FSD. Tesla has already said it would be cheaper to be sued than to volunteer the upgrades.
Correct. 4.0 probably won’t be FSD.
So Elon once again lied to us?! And he had the nerve to increase the price of FSD to $15,000. Everyone needs to stop buying FSD.
Sure hope they can see speed humps soon it’s very annoying to use FSD and had to slam on my brakes or a speed bump
My Mac had a "recall" last night! This morning it was fixed by Ventura 13.0, at least Apple isn't as bad as Microsoft who had 2 "recalls" a day, every single day...🤣
I know at least one person who uses the free supercharging so much, he will probably keep his Model S until it disintegrates. It’s a hell of a deal, free fuel for life.
Andy.
To be clear, it's "at least 3,500 superchargers"
I imagine the remaining 4000 will be destination chargers (with Magic Dock)
Well done for picking up on the "double the numbers" point.
You could add that the announcement wasn't clear if the increase will be double the number of *chargers* or locations.
If it's locations, that's an approximate increase from the current number of 1665, to ±3,300 sites.
With 3,500 chargers allocated to be "open", that's an average of ONE per location, maybe with 2 at 200 larger sites?
Also, these will still be available to Tesla vehicles.
You raise good points. One quibble that I'd raise is that destination chargers won't need a "magic doc", since those are level 2 EVSEs, and connect to J-1772 docks on non-Teslas. Adapters exist that enable people to convert a Tesla connector to a J-1772 plug, but they are expensive, and you would need a method to keep people from stealing the adapter. It seems to me that the easier strategy is to simply fit all of the destination chargers with J-1772 plugs. Tesla drivers already have an adapter to convert a J-1772 plug to a Tesla connector, and this adapter locks into the Tesla Port, so it can't be stolen. Depending on the wording of the law, Tesla could install a mix of Tesla connectors and J-1772 equipped destination chargers in a given location.
I'm glad that the system of destination chargers is going to be expanded, and is included in this new federal incentive plan. There is a great deal of excitement over DCFCs, but a plentiful system of level 2 chargers will do much to enable long distance driving. Perhaps it's because I'm old, but I have no desire to drive 500 miles in one day. That's a long time in the saddle. Driving 300 miles per day is plenty for me. If I can charge overnight, and then charge at every meal stop, I'd be quite content to travel without fast charging on most trips. You can probably build 50 level 2 chargers for the cost of one DCFC, so it's a very cost-effective strategy to ensure installing Destination chargers generously.
So are old models getting hardware upgrades? I have a 2020 model 3 will I get anything?
No.
Yes. Many more miles and free smiles of electric motoring.
Hi Andy, another quality video. Thank you. But, I don't have the "free supercharging" option as some do, although I can tell you after what Tesla offered in trade on the 23 model Y I'm waiting on that the "generous offer" of AN EXTRA $5000 on a trade would likely be lost in the very poor trade values Tesla offers. They were $4500 below CarMax cash purchase offer and $9000 below what I sold my vehicle for on Craigslist. I've heard many others with Teslas complaining that their trade offers were down right insulting. So no, I don't think that $5000 will incentivize too many, especially once they get an offer on their trade.
Not just Tesla that gives poor trade values, all ICE dealerships do too. If you want the best price, always sell to a third party.
Did the supercharging transfer to the new owner?
When will hardware 4 be available in teslas? If I order one today would it have hardware 4.0?
No
HW3, FSD Level 3 (Beta FSD). And HW4 is coming…
There is the issue of some EVs having their charge ports on the wrong side and so they take up two spaces when charging. We see that here in the UK and it can be frustrating when that space is the only one left.
No 5k is not a fair deal for super chargers in a Tesla with free super charging a cross country or round trip is cheaper than flying if I had free super charging I would drive that car until it cratered in the ground.
They just need to change the term "recall", when it relates to software. The safety agencies are just behind how quickly technology has been changing.
But Andy, love how you showed that Tesla self driving promotional video, which was ultimately found to be not what the software can do and done at Elon's request. Funny how it still can't do that.
And yes, the cost from HW3 to HW4 might be significant according to Elon, but we were also promised hardware upgrades when we bought FSD. At the very least we need new cameras for FSD to work correctly at night. The blinker bleed is terrible and often the cameras can't see, so it shuts off FSD.
What about those that paid for it back in 2016 with hardware 1? I feel bad for them and really don’t know what they are supposed to do.
Recall is wrong. Autopilot is wrong.
obviously i have a model 3
The biggest problem with this (As already experienced in europe) is cars that have their charging port on the rear right or front left, for instance, would take 2 spots if they were to charge at a SC. Tesla needs either extend or allow the users to extend the SC Cable in order to mitigate this problem.
Another one slammed into an emergency vehicle again just yesterday.
Okay? Just another situation where the driver will be at fault or had a medical event.
That 5k offer will just make their trade in offers on par with what the rest of the industry offers
Lol thats not an update thats an update the MSN are full of it
Hardware updates as well as the CCS option are two reasons that I decided to lease, rather than buy by Model 3.
Glad I never paid for FSD. I can only imagine the anger I would feel if I had paid $15,000 for a feature and my car isn't equipped to handle the computational demands of the FSD since Tesla won't retrofit "outdated" cars with the required hardware to run it. What was the $15,000 spent for then if they don't get the feature???
Software updates aren’t recalls. Anytime I updated software on my ICE vehicle, due to bugs and glitches, they weren’t called “recalls.” It’s just another way to beat elon and teslas into the dirt.
Tesla should charge Non-Tesla EVs with an adapter rather than giving them a free adaptor on the SC...
Like you, I had my 2018 M3LR upgraded to HW 3.0 so I could have FSD-beta (though I think I paid $3K extra for it). With no possibility of upgrade to 4.0, it looks like FSD-for-real will not be possible. Bummer.
No new computer for you 👨🍳
That footage of the Tesla hitting the dummy- it makes me wonder if they covered the camera/ sensor with masking tape. Considering what it can do, hitting that dummy seems like the anomaly.
It’s fake.
I don't get all this defence that's its a beta. Who cares? It's being driven on roads and while the owner may have accepted the terms and conditions, the person or vehicles on the road that could adversely get impacted did not. So yeah. Recall is absolutely the right term.
In fact, I'm not even sure that this should really be allowed until it has been tested thoroughly by the company. Not the consumers. Then Tesla would be liable. As it should.
If NHTSA doesn't follow with the time they will become obsolete, the time of recalls has passed and they need to update their announcements
This is true but big ships can't turn quickly.
I totally agree with Elon recalls should be a physical hardware or part replacement not Software. Because when I get a notice of a recall I automatically think I need to make a service appointment. Better if they change this for Tesla and less Customer confusion.
Free supercharging on the Big Island (Hawaii) would be a waste as there are no superchargers here. So would definitely agree with you.
How do you handle servicing on the outer islands? Want to get a M3 but with how rural the other islands are it concerns me
@BA If it's minor they have a service tech come to you. If it's major (and still under warranty) they ship it to Honolulu. That's what I've been told, and I have seen the service van on the Big Island. Maybe if we get enough here they put a service center? I see more of them every day.
Great video Andy! I promise you that my FSD beta equipped 2018 Model 3 that now is running vision only software does not drive as well as it used to. If Tesla also changes my software to not use the ultrasonic sensors, then things will get even worse. It really seems that Elon is trying to encourage us to buy the new updated Model 3 when it comes out? I already paid for FSD and I have lifetime data, no way will I pay $15,000 and still have to pay $10 per month for data.
They should have a program so you can transfer your Enhanced AP or FSD to a new vehicle purchase.
Yeah, I agree with you on the free supercharging miles - it's a nice "feel good" perk but it really isn't as valuable as many would think.
It could be a game changer for people living in an apartment or who drive a ton
@@kenneththomas8299 I could see that for folks that use their S or X for rideshares, but that's pretty niche. I can't imagine still living in an apartment but still have the cash to pay over $100k for a car. Perhaps a condo.
Funny. My robot vacuum has a greater variety of sensors than a Tesla.
Hate to break it to you but hardware 4.0 won’t be FSD.
Oooooo! An "expert"!!!!
I agree! We won't see FSD for another decade at least. But I'm sure Elon will keep raising the price for it.
Wow this is the end of Tesla!
That hardware 4 upgrade has huge potential for a FSD buyback if FSD can't be achieved with hardware 3. Evidently, FSD is much harder than they expected because that hardware 3 computer is very, very powerful. I have no clue how Elon can keep saying FSD will be realized in 2023 with a hardware upgrade on the horizon. Kinda weird!
This should be a very interesting story to watch unfold.
I have a 3LR and have no interest in FSD and don't even use AP. I don't travel much anymore and actually like driving my own car.
FSD would only interest me if I could sit in the back seat and FSD takes me to my destination. Other than that happening, it's a no.
I have zero interest in overseeing software developments that may be on my car.
A call for software change is different from a hardware problem
True, but bad software in a vehicle can kill you just as easily as bad hardware.
Why do I get this feeling that my 2023 M3 wont get Tesla vision or it wont be anytime soon.. disappointed even if I wanted FSD its not worth to get since the limited features I have without the sensors.
I don't think $5,000.00 is a good deal to give up free supercharging. Do you think I could pay Tesla $5,000.00 for lifetime free supercharging? I would do it.
Unless you drive constantly for work, it won't be worth it. The math doesn't lie.
Happened across an article from about 5 days ago from USA Today detailing recent vehicle recalls.
One related (from memory) to the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, which could suffer sudden loss of (electrical?) drive in cold conditions under acceleration, increasing the likelihood of an accident.
Repair involves a software update! ( *Available free of charge at a Toyota dealer*)
.
Has anyone heard of that one?
(I thought not)
If the FSD beta does indeed contain bugs that could cause accidents I think it is entirely proper for NHTSA to identify them and demand that they be corrected. I think it is irrelevant whether you call it a "recall" or a "bug fix." I hope Tesla concentrates on fixing the bugs, rather than wasting energy on what to call them.
0:54 Dude,
"That was RUN during the superbowl"
Not RAN.
I'm guessing tesla may offer one-time-only upgrade for trade-in offer for those 285k who purchased FSD. They will make the 2024 Model 3/Y with HW4 have numerous other improvements making trade-in worthwile. eg. 4680 LR. Pay $20,000 for trade in and incl FSD no extra cost. I would do this since I'm missing lots of new features over last 3yrs (centre console, double pane glass, heated steering wheel, etc. . But getting more range will be the biggest and worthwhile for trade-in. Tesla then takes our nearly 300,000 cars and resells them for $30,000 and continues to penetrate mass market. So telsa gets $25-$30k from us and $30,000 for older tesla and it is like the just sold 300,000 more cars!!! Win win for everyone.
I will trade in my Aug.2020 M3P for 2024 MYP LR 4680 410mile range (vs standard range of 270miles)
When Elon says “I'm confident” about hardware 3, It makes me not confident. We all know he likes to exaggeration.
When will we ever see the 4680 batteries? When will we get 400+ range? When will the LRM3 come back?
We've already seen the 4680.
.
If anything "we" will see the same, or *reduced* range with faster charging.
.
Have you not been watching the news regarding Project Highland? (That'll be the LRM3)
I'd just be happy is 400 miles of range was the minimum, because as the batteries age the range gets less and less.

@@ngenes1 Can you spend your money on me so you can invest in yourself?
Have 8 years on my S. With free supercharging. If the offer was for a Model Y or 3. I would take it. Getting a Model S now is almost twice what it cost me on 2015. The Price of a Model Y AWD = Model S 75 2015
I'm not buying a Tesla until FSD is the real deal.
The fact that everyone is ignoring that Tesla actually initially disagreed with the NHTSAs findings that the software allows a vehicle to "exceed speed limits or travel through intersections in an unlawful or unpredictable manner increases the risk of a crash" is troubling. Without the “recall” Tesla would have not fixed this issue potentially risking the lives of innocent people. Instead fanboys are fixated on the term recall vs update. Do you realize the update would have never happen if the recall was not issued?
Gueesing
And yet Tesla purposely put out software that didn't completely stop at stop signs, which broke the law.
CCS retrofit plz
No.
there's an adapter for that...?
If Tesla has no issue marketing FSD which is not FSD then why should they care about the word "recall".
It's called beta. They're pointing to what is going to be, allowing us to invest in the future.
that's why it's called FSD Beta for a reason
Elon Musk is the world’s greatest salesman - he can extract 15 grand from the gullible and also demand that they prequalify for the privilege of working for nothing fixing the product that he says doesn’t work yet, but that the buyer is charged with fixing for him.
Each sale does wonders for his wealth ranking - and enables him to get on with warning us all about the danger the woke represent to all common sense thinkers.
That’s how you get to lead a cult.
You are not averse to spreading FUD, and Tesla does NOT market FSD.
Rarely, they do permit qualified VOLUNTEERS to TEST a future product called “FSD BETA”, NOT FSD (there is a fee for the privilege).
@@gcauldwell ahh the old twisted logic put. Biden winning was also FUD I guess. The woke tend to fail in the FUD field.
I have a friend with a Model S with lifetime free charging. Tesla would have to prise that from his cold dead hands.
He won't die in his Tesla! 😉
⚡⚡⚡🧙🏻♂
I hate the word entitled, have you ever tried your entitlement at any other car manufacturer? Not even McDonald’s gives two shits.
Will Tesla honor other EV's that have free super charging programs? I hope not. There should be no free charging, it just makes people abuse it.
hw3 WONT be enough for true FSD but to avoid lawsuits Tesla will just keep saying that they are working on it it will just never come. Elon is the master of kicking the can down the road
who cares anymore about over the air software when your kids are on the line lol. HW3 will never make it from here.
Elon is Right!
I am betting HW4 is required to fix the panthom breaking. It is a very reproducable problem, so easy to find with debugging. But still not fixed after many many months.
years...
Isn't it funny how Elon insisted that removing the radar would eliminate phantom braking, but it didn't. In fact, now has had more of these braking events since they turned off my radar. And not it's odd that Elon will be putting a new radar system in place. He seems to be wrong a lot lately, could it be that Twitter is causing him to be distracted? lol
