Although more so for the safety aspect; not presenting a challenge to EMT rescue workers if they're needed. Ref what happened to Angela Chao.
My friends ICE auto steering broke down, requiring a replacement of a $14 part. They wanted $4000 to replace the whole assembly, which was the only way to get the part from manufacturer. Shopping off brand, probably some Chinese junk, could get the part and have a mechanic replace it. Total cost, about $100, rather than $4000 plus work.

Thanks for the educational video for yet another reason not to own a Tesla. Who has time for broken door handles that fail at the most inconvenient time. I've owned ICE cars for 50 years and never had a problem with a door handle breaking. Since the window regulator on the drivers' door was getting ready to fail, I suspect the same will happen on the passenger side as well. Just think how much you saved on gas though, right?

    • @cadreamdrives
      @cadreamdrives  8 місяців тому +2

Right - we wouldn’t want any of that new technology stuff! Probably better if we could go back to horse and buggy to be on the safe side 😄.
The door handles on the S are definitely a weak point - or rather, they were. I think they pretty much have them under control now. There are other things that may be quirky.
But isn’t that the case for all cars?
And yes - think about all the money I save on gas. It does add up to quite a bit. And then add the money (and time) saved by not having to do oil changes, spark plug changes, brake jobs, annual service, and replacements of a million other parts, that fail on ICE cars.
Not to mention the time I don’t spend at gas stations.
The Tesla Model S has remarkably few quirks, given that it’s the first real car from a completely new manufacturer. It’s also incredibly reliable - much more so than any of all of the ICE cars I have owned. Add on top of that, that the driving experience is better in almost every way.
I know new technology can be scary - and that many people love to criticize EVs. Many of them have never even tried one.
I encourage you to try one out. You just might be surprised at what you find… 😊

Personally, the less tech the better, only when the feature is necessary. Tesla is basically a hibernate mode of a laptop so it is constantly using battery even if you don't drive the car - loosing about 1% a day by just parking. I've done the regular maintenance on it (I am previously an auto tech and I've worked on cars my whole life). It has been the most trouble free car I've had and it is fun to drive. Without the horrible DCT transmission there are none of those issues.
Today's cars are not much more than over-tech packages that collect data that violates your privacy. Many cars have large screens in them that you HAVE TO LOOK AT in order to use heater controls, or to jump from one specific radio station to another. This requires you to take your eyes off the road so that you can be sure to touch the exact location of the images of buttons, instead of being able to FEEL actual buttons/knobs without looking. The notion that controls in a car are done that way, making you take your eyes off the road, is insane.
Today's cars track HOW you drive, WHERE you go, HOW OFTEN you go there, how MANY people you take with you, and if they are adults or kids. This data is collected at any time by the manufacturer (you didn't believe Over-the-air Updates were for your convenience, did you?) and then sold to a data collection company. It is another source of income that the manufacturers make off of you. Then that company identifies your insurance company and sells your information to them, and THEY make money off fo you too. Then your insurance company looks at the data and see you slammed your brakes on several times, and you accelerate faster than they like. This makes you a "risky" client and they increase your insurance rate. There are already a number of videos here on UA-cam of that happening. Please take 4 seconds to search for them if you don't believe me.
The light that comes on when you have something kind of heavy in the front passenger seat that says "Passenger Airbag Off" is there to keep the airbag from harming children when they are in the front seat. However, that same sensor is on all the seats so that the car can collect info on how many people are riding with you, and if they are adults or kids.
I am choosing to opt out of that by not owning one of these newer vehicles. Also, my car has been paid for for years. I bought it when it only had 16,000 miles in 2014. Original sticker price was $22,400. I only paid $14,000 for it. Because it has a manual transmission there wasn't as big a market for it, so it was cheaper. I believe I am the one who is laughing loudest.

But here is the thing. It may cost me $15k if I ever need to replace the battery in the car. That’s a lot of money, for sure.
But it’s a lot less than the cost when my Jaguar XKR and my BMW 650 had engine failures - both a much lower mileage.
A Tesla Model S is not a cheap car and repair prices tend to follow the original cost of the car.
But right now, old Teslas can be incredible bargains - even with the risk of battery failure.
I’m also not sure you really want to be comparing service and parts costs - or general reliability - with McLarens.
They are awesome cars, for sure, but they don’t exactly excel in reliability and affordability 😄

This is why 10 year old Tesla’s are not worth anything, but for parts.

OMG, I do not anticipate becoming an electrical or mechanical engineer after purchasing a Tesla and paying a lot for it. This is just crazy.

Every single automobile ever made will have something break on it someday. With a legacy auto maker, foreign or domestic, their customers have a large network of dealers and private auto shops to be able to repair their vehicle. These newer auto makers don’t have that luxury. So these customers typically have a much longer downtime without their vehicles. That’s a big issue and a deciding factor for many potential customers

I guess it all depends on how you view it. For me, it was a super fun challenge. I enjoyed learning how to do it - and now I’ll be able to do the job much faster, when one of the other 3 handles breaks 😊.

Now if you were a Service Technician, you get paid once. And you usually get paid 50% of what it actually takes to do that job. But the Manufacturer calls that a Fair Price.
Have you noticed how many Service Technicians have quit the Business?

In all fairness, if I were a Tesla Service Technician, I would likely have finished the job in 30-45 minutes…
But - it sounds like you have some knowledge about unfair practices at Tesla?
Do Tesla Technicians get paid per task? Not through an hourly rate or a fixed salary?
My experience has mostly been with other manufacturers, where opposite seems to be true. They charge based on the amount of time a job says it takes in the official service manual - but the technicians do the job in half that time, or less. They often also ignore time savings when parts of jobs overlap. For example, if it takes 30 minutes to remove the under trays, and they have two tasks that require the removal of those trays - you’ll get charged for 2x30 min - even though the trays only get removed once.

    You have a dilemma...
your garage doesn't seem that its wide enough to drive into and exit from the passenger door. So if you drive straight in and exit the driver door you can't open it again. You would have to back into the garage and then slide over the center console and exit the passenger door. And of course, slide over again to drive it out.
Good that you resolved this little technological nuisance. It could have happened anytime you parked in a parking lot and someone parked too close to the passenger door.

I think the key is to not think them through and just start the job 😄.
The beauty of car repair projects is once you start, you pretty much have to find a way to finish. Challenging as that might be, stuff always gets done eventually - and you learn a few things on the way.
Sometimes, what I learn the most of, is new cuss words… 😄

Ive run a P85 for 10 years 145,000 miles had two handles break fixed both myself. Ive engineered in big auto world wide 45 years, I could tell Tesla were going to take over, I loved the S but knew full well those door handles were going to fail, I guessed it was moving wires and micro switches, oh no guys what have you done! But Tesla was a no name start up, electric cars were unknown in 2014, Id pull up to the pub. "Why you rolling?" "Im not its electric" "Wheres the engine" "There isnt one" "Well how have you got here" ....then....."Bloody hell your door handles move on their own" "Seen this his door handles move" and thats what my car got known for...moving door handles...maybe Tesla were right. Anyway had the upgrade fitted, 4 handles new software, not micro switches no moving wires, peace of mind......yep it was a design defect but great marketing.
