Julian is a D'Addario endorser since 2014
"Julian Lage released his debut album, Sounding Point, in 2009, when he was just 21 years old. By then, however, the New York City-via-Santa Rosa, California, guitarist had already lived multiple musical lives. A child prodigy, Lage was the subject, at the tender age of eight, of an Oscar-nominated documentary short, aptly titled Jules at Eight. " - Rolling Stone

Check out one of our latest episodes of Guitar Power, featuring jazz guitarist Nir Felder: ddar.io/NirFelder
What a beautiful, gentle spirit he is - I'm almost as in awe of his character as I am of his incomprehensibly advanced musical ability.
Adam Lee , well stated !!
His take on Autumn leaves is awesome
His take on ANYTHING is awesome! ;)
wow dude is super friendly and chill
I'm not a big fan of jazz music, but when this guy plays guitar I just have to sit and listen. Amazing tone and articulate playing.
scaredypicker he has a lot of Ted Green in his playing. Google ted green and get his books. Chord Chemistry.
I feel ya, brother.
My favorite guitar player for the past year or so. Can't help but smile when I hear him play guitar. So musical
he is a delight
Julian is just passing peacefully through our dimension until he reaches his next destination. Thanks for stopping by, mate.
Like a great jazz pianist, he’s mastered the full spectrum of raw natural sounds of the guitar, making it an orchestra unto itself. Gorgeous playing.
I want to be his best friend. So soft spoken, polite, honest, and a spectacular guitarist. Kudos on this episode, was a joy to watch.
+Matt Lekivetz Yes! Thanks Christ he ain't another Joe Bonamassa.
After watching ep.2 this one's like an antidote!
+Pan Damasque Amen brother!!
I’m such a fan of Alain as an interviewer. He does such a great job making people comfortable, inviting them to be playful, is very humble and is a great player himself.
Wow. A 5 year old being taught the pentatonic in 5 positions and look what he turned into.
Teachers, take note.
@@diegomaugeri4038 same dude..I got my nephew a small acoustic steel string…not the kiddos thing. Video games caught his attention of course
@@Zeal808 fOrTnItEee
@@joejoe5921 exactly haha
@@Zeal808 Be happy he has the option now, kids are their own little beings with their own personal paths to take he’ll find something at makes him happy someday and now that might be guitar
ive never heard anyone tell stories through music like julian lage is able to. this guy is such an inspiration
He is a master of tone, phrasing, and melodic movements.......wow......Every time I listen to him I am blown away.
I love how light his touch is - just enough and no more. Beautiful stuff, and a great addition to this series I've been enjoying so much recently!
After last night......discovering Julian Lage has a truly been a beautiful reprieve from such sadness. Thank you.
Julian came to my college and taught a jazz masterclass, this man is beyond a genius. You should have seen the way he played and his thought process.
you lucky lucky son of a gun!
Hands down the most impressive guitarist in this video series.
Even when Julian plays pentatonics, the way his hands move....even that's different...I've spent every last ounce of musical and muscular energy I had left in learning this subtlety!
My dream scenario - I'm at home relaxing on the sofa - it's freezing and raining outside. I'm reading a good book, with a hot chocolate, and my pup is snuggled up alongside me. In the next room, Julian is playing Autumn Leaves, and a bunch of other jazz standards.
This guy is really amazing, I like his thoughts in Jazz improvisation
What he said about Elliot smith is so true. Such an underrated rogue guitarist
That made me so happy when he mentioned him. Elliott was just his own little universe of music. Made darkness so beautiful!
He is such a softspoken guy!
Cause he's a master of dynamics
my man here has definitely mastered his craft. holy shit. great tone
+Darrien Day He came to my college and taught a masterclass, this man is beyond a genius. You should have seen the way he played and his thought process.
Ty Harris i bet it sounded phenomenal in person.
I thought Tosin Abasi was commenting until I saw your name haha
Aaron Rios well that's a little fucked up
Take it as a compliment, Tosin is one hell of a guitar player
Brilliant, brilliant player. Quite possibly the best one this series will ever feature. Mad respect.
Amazing talent, never come across him before but I'll certainly investigate further.
Thank you for remembering to mic up the amp this time!
What an incredible all around person and artist.
Couldn't agree more!
Huge smile from Julian Lage mentioning Elliott Smith :)
i've seen Julian live 3 times now, and he is so incredibly gifted. it's really unfair. he is better than any active guitar player (in my humble opinion) and he's still so young!
also, you should have Guthrie Govan on!!!!
YES YES YES! This guy gets it!
Damn these videos were so fun a few years ago. Really made me wanna grab my guitar
What a humble guy . great chops !
3 out of my 4 all-time-favourite albums ever are his. Thanks for doing what you do, Julian. And thanks D'addario for uploading this!
BRILLIANT MADNESS going on in those first 45 seconds.
hell yeah someone whos into it
Thank you, Alain, for all the music you brought into this world so far...you are a great inspiration.
Tone clarity and very clean flowing progressions, like water flowing !!!
HE IS SO SWEET AND KIND I CAN'T
what a soft angel
Julian is excellent at blues, jazz, bluegrass, gypsy, and probably anything he wants.
Inspirational nerdery.
Such an amazing player! I've been listening to him for a while, he is incredible!
Wow, so humble and the passion for our instrument is so honest. I can identify with him, except that he's billion times better than me. Great guy, great guitarist!
Sooo beautiful!!! this song coming from this guy's hands!
I remember back in 1999 at Sonoma State, we were all college jazz majors and during a class in walks Julian and his dad. He proceeded to take some classes and always seemed to solo with a smile on his face completely immersed in the music........oh yea he was probably 10-11?
I wonder what he sounds like when he whispers
@Andrew Erdowonge 😂
Julian Lage ASMR, coming soon on the UA-cams
I find his humility refreshing.
@@HomoChomsky he does have a pretty relaxing voice.
Reminds me of Prince and how he, too, would talk
How fun...one of my favorite players of today interviewed by one of my favorite players when I was in high school.
Amazing player! And such an incredible jazz tone on a Tele. What a genuine spirit!
my favorite episode. This man is amazing
This guy can make anything sound better than it's supposed to be. Really enjoy his playing.
His fingers just flow across the fretboard with such ease, and it just looks so different from everyone else. He seemingly has no limits.
Mr. Lage, Sir, you're awesome! Best wishes for your musical explorations! Truly amazing.
Gonna be late for a date, cause I can't stop watching these!
fuck the stupid date,,,,idiot.
My first exposure to this guy. Love it. Can't wait to explore his work more. He couldn't come off more down to Earth and humble.
I hope you’re still following, coz he’s killing it.
He has amazing dynamics!
Goodness, this man.
he seems so nice and understanding, you can see the interviewer enjoying his conversation
wow. This guy is so great!
What a nice guy with enormous talent.
..the sheer Power of those guitars.
I love this guy
Super! Thanks! I enjoyed a lot and I will enjoy over&over! A great inspiration,hmmm!
Going to see him at Berklee in November. He seems very zen. An admirable player and a decent person.
love this episode, alain youre awesome
amazing
I wish this one was 20 mins longer
Amazing!
He is just incredible
The intro sounds like dial-up internet.
Gary guess I’m the only engineer who got what you said, huh b(a)ud?
that was tense XD
Play it at x0.25 speed, seriously
Every time I listen to his rendition of Autumn Leaves it makes my eyes water.
I could watch him play forever
That intro sounded like what happens when my cats sit in while I am practicing - they love guitar but struggle with it since they don't have "thumbs" as we normally think of them! Nice tele too.
Boozoo Chavis that was a good one.
Legit thought i had this set to play at 2x speed at the start.
This is so cool .....This guy is real ...both of them .... I better start practising scales ... Its great to hear a tele , reminds me of Ted Green's love of a Tele....Love of guitar is so so amazing ...
Such intelligence. The most intelligent player I've ever witnessed.
This what happens when you really study music. Imagine the possibilities... I want to be free too
Exactly, freedom
Good god. That guy is gifted.
what a man
Brilliant!
@ 4:01 is some of the most intuitive stuff i've ever heard.
Lage's sound is the definition of 'edge of breakup' for me. Tone for days.
This guy is a musician. Unlike so many others.
Wow! - aweome.
alain johaness. zero ego. great host
Julian can even make dischord sound wonderful!
Such a great interview! I've always been curious about Lage's influences, background, and how does he relate to rock n' roll, but it just seemed no one ever asked the right questions. Until now, that is! Thank you Johaness :)
When he mentioned Elliott Smith it made me so happy.
Wow, I get hard on myself sometimes for feeling like I've not done my homework - checking out different artists that I should know, as a musician and guitarist. But then here's Julian saying he somehow missed Hendrix for most of his life!
Must be the lightest pick strokes in history
so.. Julian says he wants to get better... dude! humble.
He's so friendly and kind, reminds me of Guthrie Govan.
It's so great that the best aren't pricks.
Could this guy be any humbler??!! Good lord! God bless 🙏 thank you for this video! 🙏
Julian that is so cool....Autumn Leaves , one of my favourites ... I think of Lenny Breau ...my my your version brought a tear to my Heart ...
Music is not about life or death...words of wisdom.
This isn’t the kind of video you stop watch if you’re a guitar player. I heard someone say he’s the greatest guitarist alive today and it definitely top 5 if not #1.
Jules was in such a talkative mood and when he was about to tell us something interesting Charlie Brown kept interrupting him because he thought people wanted to hear him play. Not now, man, not when he wants to talk.
Anyone knows what kind of guitar/pickups does Alain use in this video? Thnx.
"the guitar is so cool" ha. Love it
What’s the name of the piece in the opening? Oh, Julian’s tele tone is great!
what was the name of the last piece he played??
Having never really enjoyed those jazz guitar sounds coming from the various approaches pioneered by jim Hall/Wes Montgomery/Joe Pass, and having listen to Lage's work on Telecaster, coupled with the amazing tone/virtuosity of Ted Greene, I have to say that I think the Telecaster is the ideal jazz guitar for the smoothest and most pleasant tone.
great stuff John!
Grow some ears, @John
Vaya genios, es massa, uauu, joan, Catalonia free,💕💕❤️
Beautiful playing and great choice of songs. Could you please state the size of the neck, fret board radius and fret size ? Thank you.
+VonBluesman I'm not sure how useful you'll find that information but its a fender telecaster. A pretty modern looking one, should be similar to what you'd see on fender's own site. Owning that guitar won't make you play like Julian Lage if that's what you're thinking.
I'd recommend practicing, that helps.
Thanks but that is not what I am thinking, I am Berklee School Of Music alumni, a studio musician, a guitar teacher, and used to play out for a living. I just wanted the neck specks. Myself, I own four Fender Custom Shop Tele's, a 57 Gold Thinline blonde neck, 63 Muddy Waters reissue red with a rosewood neck, La Cabronita Especial Relic with TV Jones pickups black with blonde neck, 51 Nocaster Reissue Dakota red, Relic, with a blonde neck. I do agree with you about practice, it is the only way to get better.
Nice dude! Got an /OK/ Chinese Tele and a lot of time. Workin' on it. :)
