Not just in letting these people speak, but in using incredibly insightful questions to let them pull back the curtain of how they think, feel and function as artists.

@@lzzzo he seems to be very measured, kind, creative and putting a lot of passion and study into what he does… not exactly a typical modern behaviour, especially on social media, right..?
His guitar playing is a direct copy of his personality it seems: soft spoken, open, gentle, intriguing, both complex and easy to understand, and with so so much to say. Beautiful
"I adopted a philosophy that goes back to my parents and musicians I've been around.. You are born with a voice that you have, that you are it... And if you're lucky, you have the opportunity to peel back the layers and present it. It's not something you beat out of yourself." -- a far more healthy approach for someone trying to be creative for a living, not just in music.
What a lovely human being. I especially liked the way he referred to the musicians in his band as ‘our’ bassist and ‘our’ drummer, not ‘my’ bassist, etc. I think it comes through in the music he makes with them. Bravo. I’ll be looking for his calendar in hopes they’ll be playing somewhere near NYC soon.
I ran into Julian Lage by the Village Vanguard 10. I called his name and he ran back to talk to me. His first question was "How did you know who I am?". He asked me my name and told me that he really hoped to hear me play some day. I'll never forget how kind he was.
The point at 22:30 into this interview is WHY artists WANT to participate in these interviews and WHY we want to watch. Rick describes a voicing of an FMaj chord with a open B and a G# note that normally wouldn't be thought of to play together, that would normally sound somewhat dissonant on most guitars unless PERFECTLY intonated and perfectly played... Then Julian remembers the song and the chord being referenced and reproduces it and talks about the care required to get those strings to ring with that level of clarity, from finger pressure to strumming... What other interviewer on the PLANET has the listening focus and knowledge to pick up on that and raise it in an interview and elicit such insightful information from the artist?
Exactly! That's why Rick is a one of a kind.... All serious musicians should be calling him to be interviewed! He APPRECIATES all the thought and hard work they put into their craft, whereas very few people can recognize those details!
More astonishing is that its interesting for a lay person to watch. You don't have to know the artist or their music, or be a music student to be engaged by their joy and passion in conversation .
Rick's interview style is unparalleled - he lets the person interviewed talk without interruption. He listens and bases his questions on what's being said - he doesn't make you feel he's just waiting for a pause to ask the next question on his list. A joy to listen to.
The sad thing is that Rick's interview style is just what interviewing artists should be. We're so used to mediocrity that when thing are done well, it stands out. It should be the opposite.
Rick is a national treasure, we must protect him at all cost if we want top quality interviews like this. Rick knows his stuff, he does his homework, everyone he interviews is at ease with his presence.
It's so refreshing nowadays isn't it? Imagine...actually caring about what your interviewee has to say! Funny how we all can learn when we listen to each other. The US Congress could take a page out of Rick's book...
When my son was a talented 9th grader in the jazz guitar program at Oakland School for the Arts, Julian came to school and gave a master class. That changed my son's life! He was broadened, deepened, and absolutely launched! Thank you Julian, and thank you Rick for this great interview!
When my son was 12, he arranged his own version of "Ryland" to play for his grandfather. We recorded it and posted it to UA-cam. Fast forward a year, we go to see Julian and my son got to meet him after the show. It turns out that Julian's dad had seen the video and had had showed it to him, and Julian was so excited to meet my son. "Oh! You're that kid from the 'Ryland' video!" 🥰
Rick is creating a national archive, and we are witnessing it. I'm in awe of Julians playing, and did not know his struggle and journey to prevail. Much respect to both of you. Thank you for your dedication to the world of music.

I've met Julian (and his father) and they are both amazing human beings! While he was in high school, Julian would come and hear my "weekend warrior" jazz group play, always finding something to compliment about the music, and always declining to sit in. "Man, this is your gig" was his usual response. Polite and thoughtful, and a musician at the top of his game. I'm glad he is successful and well-respected.

What more can you ask for as a music lover/musician than a conversation like this. Such care, warmth, fun nerding out, and overall positivity. Thank you Julian and Rick for sharing this with us.
Absolutely! I think the fact he studied classical guitar from such an early age provided a critical foundation for his flawless technique. I’m always agog at the purity of the notes he plays.
Every new interview is my new favorite one. Something amazing happens with Rick’s interviews. Not only you are amazed by the artist’s answers, ideas, experiences and opinions; you are always equally amazed by Rick’s input, knowledge, questions, respect to the topic and the guest, etc. Check any interview, no matter the topic, and that synergy is not one that is easily found. This is one of the best music interviews I’ve seen… period. What an addition to the music community, Rick. Thank you to Julian for being so thoughtful with what and how you create. We all appreciate you. Keep it up, guys.
Your service to the guitar players by making these legendary musicians open up and talk about all the little things that matter is so huge Rick. Can't thank you enough!
It’s little wonder that a man so humble and kind who approaches life with wonder and delight would make music that so beautifully reflects those qualities.
Julian’s obvious talent & passion for music is almost surpassed on how eloquently he speaks about the various processes. His appreciation for music and humility when he speaks literally draws you in and makes you want to delve further into the art. Rick, I cannot thank you enough for doing this interview. Julian is truly one in a million…
Such an unbelievable amount of sincerity and tenderness in his playing. The landscapes that Julian is painting are some of the most beautiful on Earth.
Woah, been a huge fan of Julian’s music for years. First time I’ve heard him talk at length… friends, this is warmth of kindness. Warmth of enduring creativity. Let’s all endeavor to bring this warmth to our world. Thank you for this wonderful conversation.
I saw Julian this past December - attended a pre-concert master class - able to interact - he is an absolute gem of a person and really one of the best guitarists in the world. I saw it live - left me jawdropped --- wow, just wow (and his band is so good and worth seeing on their own). He's on a different level. Julian will be driving guitar playing both the basics and avant garde of playing into the future. If you haven't dug in, dig in - you will find something that speaks to you. I was captured by his performance on UA-cam - see Labor Day performance in Detroit of "Day and Age" - maybe one of the best performances I have ever seen - and I've seen some of the best - Buddy Guy, EVH - he's that good!!!
This is my favorite interview so far. Rick's musical understanding brings out a discourse that no other interviewer can match. Please Rick try and get an interview with Paul Simon while it's still possible!
I cannot begin to say how good this interview was......Rick is a fantastic interviewer: engaging, adding information, yet always always letting his interviewee say as much as they want to, and then he picks the theme up and takes the conversation forward.........As for Julian Lage.......just WOW! What a way to look at music! Incredible........besides his AWESOME playing, it's his true ARTISTRY! 😎😎😎👍
Selfishly, when he said that he records every show I immediately thought, WE NEED MORE LIVE RELEASES! Seen him and his band four times now and it's an unbelievable experience.
Can we talk about the lighting? Ricks detail doesn’t just go towards the carefully crafted questions. The setting also perfectly encapsulates Julian’s warm and inviting sonic space. Rick is really stepping into new territory here. What a timeless interview from two genuine lovers of musical detail. Well done fellas.
Whether listening to his fascinating collaborations with Nels Cline, Bill Frisell, John Zorn, Fred Hersch, Gary Burton, etc. or his own work over the past two decades (...significant since he's only in his mid-thirties), I'm struck by the increasing depth of Julian's sound and width of his vision. In his music and practices, dichotomies such "forward vs. back", "tradition vs. innovation", and even "simplicity vs. complexity" begin to dissolve. Dividing lines between styles fade. The gestural and cerebral cooperate and inform each other rather than standing at a distance. Above all else, he is ceaselessly sincere. I not only enjoy Julian's music, but I respect his decisions and admire his ethic. Thank you for featuring him on your channel and having a meaningful conversation, Rick - it's yet another learning experience that you've generously provided.
Scary technique, plays with an insane amount of passion, intelligent, all with such a down to earth personality. This guy is a class act and a real role model for sure. I love his acoustic stuff and his work with John Zorn and Nels Cline especially, even when he’s playing crazy avant garde he manages to remain soulful and keep it interesting. His playing is never forced or feels contrived, it never sounds like he’s playing just to play for the technique. It’s always very musical and expressive, insane player.
Julian, what a humble, kind, sweet, eloquent, intelligent man. He really does say a lot of things that are profoundly thought-provoking. This, like so many of Ricks amazing videos, is in the top 5 of the best ones to date. There is a reason these human beings are where they are at. They are smooth in their presentation, playing, and as people. So inspiring and mind-blowing to watch this. Thank you again, Rick. EXCELLENT!
I found Julian's discussion of dystonia fascinating and helpful, as well as totally unexpected. I am grateful that Rick allowed him to explain what it was and how he has treated it through basically tricking his brain. Physical and mental health are important aspects of musicianship. What a testimony to his dedication. Now I need to explore his music. I must confess this is the first I've heard of him! Rick is expanding my musical universe for which I'm truly grateful.
Julian's authentic self is so beautiful. And he presents himself so honestly and sincerely both through his words and his music. He's a deep feeler. Grateful for having him around.
Julian really is the most interesting and expressive guitarist today. It's a joy to hear him play and talk. He's incredibly articulate on both instances
Rich knows how to get the best out of anybody. He prefers to listen and learn than to talk . A rare virtue today. What a man. Julian is a real master. I enjoyed this so much
I just saw him play in many different John Zorn ensembles for Zorns 70th birthday. Mind you, I had never heard of him before these string of shows. To tell you I was mind blown would be an understatement. He is extraordinary.
This makes me happy. I asked Rick a few years ago via email why he hasn’t interviewed him and his very nice and thoughtful reply was that his viewership wasn’t there yet. It’s encouraging to see his influence grow, and with it the scope of musicians he interviews. Rick Beato’s channel is always improving, and we all grow with these interviews
Along with the Pat Metheny interview, my favorite guitarist interview of all time. Julian is such a thinker and philosopher and a really sweet soul. And Rick is the ultimate interviewer of serious musicians because his depth of analysis is beyond parallel. I can tell the musicians really dig that about Rick. He knows what he's talking about and he understands the artists mind so well. ✌❤
Julian is amazing. I had the opportunity to have a lesson with him a few years ago and it's one of the best lessons I've ever had. For me he's like a very old and wise music soul inside a young body. We've got so much to learn from his musicality.
Julian is a monster and Rick is such a great interviewer. Great as always. Thank you, Rick. Your contribution for generations to come in the music world is priceless. Cheers from Brazil!
I first saw Julian with The Nels Cline 4 about five years ago and became an instant fan of both of them. He is a joy to watch play, because not only is he a killer guitarist, but he visually enjoys playing, often with a great smile on his face, which he seems to be directing to either himself or some unseen force of inspiration. A very unique performer.
Julian Lage is an insane player and wise man. A very inspiring interview in multiple aspects, the world is grateful for your work Rick. Now we need a couple of hours with John Zorn!
Which is exactly what I mentioned in my comment on this video. One on Frisell would be great, too! But also Jack DeJohnette, Herbie Hancock, Charles Lloyd, Jan Garbarek, Ralph Towner, Steve Tibbetts, Terje Rypdal, Diana Krall, Nels Cline, Steve Swallow and I could go on and on!
the way julian talks is almost identical as how he plays guitar!, a lot of dinamics and smooth sound, with accents just in one parte of the sentence, etc. the true meaning of you play like you talk
Julian Lage is a true prodigy of the guitar and an unparalleled talent in the world of music. His technical prowess, artistic sensitivity, and stunning creativity make him an exceptional musician in every sense. From an early age, Lage has showcased an extraordinary mastery of the instrument. His ability to combine impeccable technique with deep emotional expressiveness is simply breathtaking. Every note he plays conveys a beauty and intensity that transcends words. But beyond his technical virtuosity, what truly sets Julian Lage apart is his ability to create music that touches the soul. His compositions are a perfect blend of tradition and exploration, fusing elements of jazz, folk, and rock into a unique amalgamation. Whenever I listen to his melodies, I feel like I'm being transported to a magical and emotionally resonant place. In addition to his talent as a guitarist and composer, Lage is also an exceptional collaborator. He has worked with some of the most prominent names in music, and his ability to adapt and complement other musicians is remarkable. His humility and passion for music are evident in each of his performances. In summary, Julian Lage is a musical genius who has captured the hearts of millions of people around the world. His innate skill, overflowing creativity, and ability to convey emotions through his guitar make him one of the most fascinating musicians of our time. I am certain that we will continue to enjoy his exceptional music for many years to come.
The best concert I’ve ever been to. Julian Lage is otherworldly as a musician and he’s such a gentleman (and that may be an understatement on both cases). Thank you for this Rick!
I think Rick might very well be one of the best if not the best music interviewers ever. The amount of knowledge and capacity Rick has allows him to ask very insightful and thought provoking questions from an incredibly experienced musical perspective. Such a gift. Thank you for these great interviews
I am From Australia, I was in New York in 2013 where he happened to be playing at the Blue note with Gary Burton. I got to have a chat to him after, I had already knew of Julian and told him I actually came to see him play mostly. I remember he was so surprised by that. Humble guy..
Not just every guitarist. My wife and kids went with me to the Village Vanguard in July 2022 to see Julian. None of us knew what to expect. We all loved his trio!
The breadth and depth of the cultural touch points these two just breeze over, dip into, expand upon, explicate……wow….when Rick has the right partner these balletic chats become Swan Lake 👏👏👏👏👏so impressive and inspiring and warm 👌🥂
I’ve watched and listened to Rick Beato for four years now and he still amazes me with his knowledge of theory, scales, modality, cadences, and on and on. He can recall, and identify by listening to, every chord form and their extensions. I imagine that he can intimidate even highly successful artists.
What an unassuming man Julian Lage is. He is so talented. A wonderful interview. Another great example of how Rick can get the best from top musicians.
Again - a great interview because Rick contributes only what is important. Very controlled, allowing Julian too have the time completely. Rick - the humility and respect is the precious metal in your uncovering, thank you.
The sheer emotion that Julian plays with is reflected every time I see him play. He breaths as he plays, his body language mirrors the melody. The way he smiles as the chords are conveyed shows just how in touch he is with his instrument and where he fits in his trios or bands. Listening to this interview is listening to history in the making. Both musicians know their roles and it makes the interview deeper on so many levels. Much love and appreciation for both Julian and Rick!! And to the both of you thank you for every contribution you've made to my music.
A sonoma county resident and have seen the artist many times, the best, he is just now even getting great, he has no limits. will be seeing Samara Joy and bill frizel this weekend. epic. love life.
I love the contrast between this interview and the Nuno Bettencourt interview: the two players couldn't be more different in style, approach and temperament, yet Rick brings out the best in both with his questions, observations and willingness to listen. And the observations about the ability of the Telecaster to cross over into any style are spot on.
As a recent Lage addict, my respect for Rick just rocketed. What a great, deep, UNHURRIED interview. I did not know Rick knew quite so much. I see why ppl hold him with such reverence.
I discovered Julian by watching the NPR Tiny Desk concert with Gary Burton. I love his music but from time to time, I came back to the NPR video... that's beautiful man! Thank you so much for this interview!
my jaw dropped, my brain exploded. Julian's personality complements his music. His music is SO him. Thank you Rick for getting such great people to the channel. And you make it so so much great.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2nd that EMOTION!!!
Then again why not Smokey Robinson!!????? He's in his 80's and won't be around forever Rick?
@@brucetowell3432 Good one!!
Man, that is one true title. There is something transcendental in both his playing and in his speech - his smoothness is something to aspire towards!
You are in for a treat man
You put that beautifully. As a big fan of Julian I hope you enjoy his music a lot. For me Squint has been his best album yet so I recommend it a lot.
Julian's authentic self is so beautiful. And he presents himself so honestly and sincerely both through his words and his music.
He's a deep feeler. Grateful for having him around.
What does it mean for Julian to play a red tone?
Julian has such a Mr. Rogers tone; not a word out of place, yet measured, gracious, and thought provoking language.
Wow. He speaks just as beautifully as he plays.
Rick. You are absolutely killing it. One home run interview after another. Keep it going.
Love how peaceful his voice is. It’s so calming listening to him talk
I have never heard the guitar played like this. An award needs to be invented for this video.
The sequence of him talking about accompanying his wife, and his wife producing his album was incredible.
How is it possible that these interviews keep getting better?
Saw him in a small theater in NYC a few months ago, the audience was made up of all ages and backgrounds, great music truly brings people together.
Julian is the heir to Pat Martino. He's so erudite, considerate, and humble. Amazing interview.
Absolute master. I'm lucky to have seen him live and it was an amazing experience.
The best concert I’ve ever been to. Julian Lage is otherworldly as a musician and he’s such a gentleman (and that may be an understatement on both cases).
Thank you for this Rick!
Julian is so far beyond anyone else making music. It's incredible. You can literally see the size of his brain just looking at him.
I haven't heard him play a single lick yet, but I love this guy! He has a great attitude, energy, way of expressing himself, humility, gratitude, etc.
I like him for another reason. He seems so nice and humble.
I think Rick might very well be one of the best if not the best music interviewers ever. The amount of knowledge and capacity Rick has allows him to ask very insightful and thought provoking questions from an incredibly experienced musical perspective. Such a gift. Thank you for these great interviews
Before I even get into the content, can I just say your lighting and ambience in the control room are BANG ON
I am From Australia, I was in New York in 2013 where he happened to be playing at the Blue note with Gary Burton.
He is so humble and genuine. What a wonderful interview, thank you sincerely Rick.
This video belongs in a museum or something. Truly beautiful!
There's probably 100 of thousands of players like nuno. There's only 1 julian.
As a recent Lage addict, my respect for Rick just rocketed. What a great, deep, UNHURRIED interview. I did not know Rick knew quite so much. I see why ppl hold him with such reverence.
Rick is such a great Interviewer and he listens to the artist's pov. So refreshing.
Man this dude is INTELLIGENT, his sentence structure, conversation style, man what a mind, and what a player!
Never heard of Julan Lage before today, I am amazed at what a bright soul he is! Will start to listen to his music now...
Check out his stuff with Nels Cline as well. So good.
Nocturne live in LA was the hook for me - what a performance! enjoy
Same!
Julian, the sweetest, most gentle musical genius you'll ever meet.
I really appreciate how willing Julian was to be open and vulnerable about his dystonia condition. It means a lot.
I'm so glad that such a talented musician is such a thoughtful and humble person.
I discovered Julian by watching the NPR Tiny Desk concert with Gary Burton. I love his music but from time to time, I came back to the NPR video... that's beautiful man! Thank you so much for this interview!
Was fortunate enough to get a lesson from Julian. Lol, I didn't deserve it... he was incredibly patient with me. Wonderful sweet soul!
my jaw dropped, my brain exploded. Julian's personality complements his music. His music is SO him. Thank you Rick for getting such great people to the channel. And you make it so so much great.
Rick, you made Julian so happy! Thank you for sharing your gift! You're always in the service of your brothers!
Wow! Julian is a true artist and genius….and so humble. Amazing interview!
Oh man. I love that guy, after work I like to have a beer and just get lost in his playlist. Thank you, Rick!
