Julian Lage is unable to give anything less than an insightful and inspiring interview. Such a generous artist, both intellectually and as a performer, and for somepne who has accomplished so much is still at a relatively early stage in his career. It’s a privilege to live in an age when we have so much access to musicians of historic importance like Lage.
He plays as he talks or viceversa. Santana' as an influence has been a lovely surprise. Long live to Metheny! Lage will keep that tradition in the coming decades. Thanks.
In our political and media hype climate it is so nice to remember there are beautiful people who try to see the beauty in others, rather than critique absolutey everything. Thank you Julian for your playing, but also your grace and humility.
@@sfjazz Thanks, I will log on when the time is right. In the meantime, hurry up and invite Ralph Towner before it's too late and he's too fragile to perform anymore. He has been touring and writing since the very early 70's and his style of playing is absolutely unique, his body of work immense and if there is ONE guitarist in the Jazz genre deserving wider recognition it's him.

Very cool to hear him talk about Jimmy Bryant. And once he started talking about Pat Metheny, I just thought, "Of course." I'm only tangentially familiar with Metheny but the influence on Julian's style is obvious.
We totally agree! Already a legend forsure. Check out his new project Rude Ruth live from the SFJAZZ Center: www.sfjazz.org/athome/on-demand/julian-lage-rude-ruth/
At the SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco, every two years we choose 4 artists in the improvised music space to produce a residency once a year, which we call 'SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director'. More Information here: www.sfjazz.org/discover/resident-artistic-directors/
I’m not usually a racial bean counter, but it felt weird watching a tribute to jazz guitar masters and none were black. Wes Montgomery anyone? Grant Green? Russell Malone? George Benson? No disrespect; it just seemed unusual

Well said!
I hadn't thought about it before, but the Santana influence makes a lot of sense.

Seems like such a nice guy, not a hint of ego being one of the greatest musicians currently. If only more people could be like this
Wow. Just wow.

SFJAZZ Collective - “Give the Drummer Some”
What he said about Scofield could already be said about him.
