Setlist: 1. Bone Collector (Lage/Eldridge) 0:25 2. Greener Grass (Eldridge) 5:25 3. Everything Must Go (Lage/Eldridge) 15:25 4. Mean Mother Blues (Starling) 29:00
To me this just illustrates the musical ties between jazz, gypsy style, and bluegrass. They blend together so much better than I ever would have guessed.
Really revealing. I loved that someone asked Julian about his rhythm playing and he answered so humbly. I feel as though the two have become wise old men in their time together. because when they first met they were mature, but now they've come on even more. Thanks so much Chris and Jules
This was taped the day after their show at the Old Town School in Chicago. It was the first time I'd seen them live, and they were much better than even I expected. They just have so much funplaying together. They are almost apologetic at how much they enjoy their work. The only thing that could make them better would be if Jules could sing. That would add so much to their show, to hear them sing harmonies ona waltzor classic country ballad. I'd love to hear Critter and a guy like Teddy Thompson, Richard and Linda's boy sing together. These guys are just amazing at their craft.
John Hartford is the only person I have ever seen who could - with just a fiddle or guitar and no other musicians on stage - have an entire crowd on its feet dancing and totally under his spell. His talent will likely never be seen again.
So are they getting all their amplified sound simply from that one mic in the middle? Doesn’t look like they’re plugged into anything. I’m performing for the first time with an acoustic soon and trying to figure out the best way to get a natural acoustic tone in a small venue.
Yeh man... Use a mic. Point it at the guitar in between your hand positions. Kinda where the neck meets the body. WATCH OUT FOR FEEDBACK! ... it's beautiful if you can get a nice, loud and tight sound.
Eric Zimmer Yes, like Armin said, expensive! They are about $75 dollars. Also, look at the Dunlop Primetones which are significantly cheaper, but similar in design.
Good call Dan blue-chip picks are great, but I'd own one for about 30 minutes and it would evaporate into that graveyard in the sky, or under my couch. The Dunlaps are nice alternative, I sandal the grip features off, and then polish it down with those micro mesh pads and some Maguires Scratch X, polishing compound. Start with 600 and then maybe 800, 1,200 etc. if you want to go with overkill, 6k,8k, and then 12,000k for the OCD in most of us that are inclined to obsesse over such things.😏
It's a Collings OM1A JL guitar. It has a satin as opposed to a matte finish, which in my opinion looks a lot more attractive in reality than it does in videos. Julian originally asked Collings whether they could come up with an OM model similar to the Waterloo guitar that he so likes. This led to them developing this signature model together.
There is no off notes, the melody is in a different mode (like the flat 9th in the first song, could be from Phrygian mode or Hungarian minor. ) other than the regular Ionian mode, usually heard in funk, jazz, and even classical music. Yeah they sound odd and irregular at first, but if you are into modes, they can create nice tensions and quite fun.
I agree that those modes are accurately observed but I personally wouldn't ascribe them to this music. In other words, I think those Off Notes are just deliberate antecedents AKA melody-tension (as in tension and release, AKA antecedent followed by consequent, AKA Antithesis) This can be heard in the first tune when Jules plays a dissonant note, one semitone up from the root of the scale then releases the tension onto the root So yes it's a flat 9tension the a rootRelease.) Jules is good at doing that. He's being doing jazz since he was a kid.
Two absolutely amazing players. Stoked to have Premier Guitar posting quality content such as this.
Setlist:
1. Bone Collector (Lage/Eldridge) 0:25
2. Greener Grass (Eldridge) 5:25
3. Everything Must Go (Lage/Eldridge) 15:25
4. Mean Mother Blues (Starling) 29:00
Two amazingly talented and humble human beings. If only all of our musical heroes could show such grace.

There is so much good music out there if you just look for it. Thank you very much for this upload.
Sounds great. Cool to see Julian Lage play in a bluegrass/country style.
them tuning their guitars sounds better than my playing haha great video Premier guitar!

So fine and too good for words.
You guys are astonishing~ I saw Julian with Gary Burton at Yoshi’s in Oakland back in ‘05-‘06 - he was all of 17!
Both Wonderful., as always.
That was pretty sick. Loved the first tune. They play off each other pretty damn well. The guitars are just gorgeous.
Just saw these guys last night in Chicago. A-MAZE-ING
Yes, we were
There too. What's a treat!
Wonderful amalgam of their diverse styles! Would like to hear them cover one of the Eddie Lang/Lonnie Johnson numbers like "Handful of Riffs."
Some of the most adventurous and original guitar music being made right now...
John Hartford is the only person I have ever seen who could - with just a fiddle or guitar and no other musicians on stage - have an entire crowd on its feet dancing and totally under his spell. His talent will likely never be seen again.
Amazing music and excellent tempo control!
this is incredible
Absolutely astonishing.. haha awesome
Wow - do more of these! (Is it me, or is Julian starting to look like Abe Lincoln? Maybe Abe's little brother?)
Gabe Lincoln
Magnificent players, Great content, keep it up! hey julian i'm your no.1 fan!
I'm not so sure about that last part.
great ! !
Crazy good
Good stuff!
Guitar Love!
YES
Might be the first video I've ever seen where Julian Lage actually looks a little tired haha! Fantastic playing
oh he's sick hahaha, that makes sense.
For three months - that guitar has a lot of wear. Jules is a hoss.
Not sure if anyone mentioned yet, but the effect of their instruments and playing: thought I heard a piano at ua-cam.com/video/7FceYsBW3tY/v-deo.html

(I don't recognize this one. Anyone able to name it?)
Everything Must Go
Mean Mother Blues
Greener Grass
What do they mean by blue chip picks (plectrum)? Is that a brand, shape, or a style? Never heard of them.
its a super expensive brand ;)
Eric Zimmer Yes, like Armin said, expensive! They are about $75 dollars. Also, look at the Dunlop Primetones which are significantly cheaper, but similar in design.
Armin Kulla thanks! A search for "Bluechip picks" worked to find their website but a two word "blue chip" yielded racehorse tips and the like LOL
Dan Greenwood thanks for the tip on Dunlop Primetones....way more budget friendly for a hacker like me!

These bluechip picks cost like 40 - 50 -60 USD, one would hope they're pretty good for those kind of prices.
they're the best, worth every penny
oh Gawwd
final fantasy 8 music
A lil bit of house of cards in there huh?
I know this was a while ago...but please eat a sandwich Julian you are withering away friend. Skills still impeccable, Both!
what is Julian's guitar?
A Collings that was built for Julian with a matte finish and some pre war specs under the hood. It looks like an OM, as opposed to a 000

dissonant melodic lines in first song? anybody else hear those off notes?
