Honda CBR650R 2020 Akrapovic Exhaust Upgrade Installation (It’s Loud)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 лис 2021
- In this video, I show a complete breakdown and step by step guide for the removal of the OEM exhaust and fitment of the new Akrapovic full system. This includes removing the fairing, the tools I used and some tips along the way.
The process of removing the fairing and exhaust mounting, will be the same for all Akrapovic model’s, so can apply even if you don’t have my model.
The system I bought and cover in the video, is the Akrapovic S-H6R14-HEGEHT and is made of titanium. This of course reduces the overall weight of the bike and the performance is also increased.
The below link is for the exhaust I have purchased and fitted from Akrapovic:
www.akrapovic.com/en/moto/pro...
Tools used in the video for install are:
- 17mm spanner (for CO2 / Lambda sensor)
- Small Screwdriver (Philips)
- 12mm Socket (header bolts and back box bracket)
- Ratchet (I used a 1/4” drive)
- 5mm Hex / Allen head
- 3mm Alex / Allen head
- Universal Joint
- 10mm Socket (radiator mounting bolts)
- Spring puller
- 1/4” drive Torque wrench (torque settings further below)
- Torch
The spring puller does not come with the exhaust kit, but I would highly recommend one. With any of the Akrapovic exhaust systems, they will be spring mounted, so this tool is essential.
The link for the spring puller is below, but all good hardware shops will sell them or just order it online like I did.
www.amazon.co.uk/Silverline-4...
The torquing of the bolts is very important. Being an engineer, I understand the philosophy behind torquing, but not everybody takes it as serious. Over tightening the bolts can be really damaging and increase the risk of shearing a header stud (that would be a disaster).
Do not over-tighten the bolts, when fitting the exhaust. Allow the torque wrench to tighten them to the required setting. The instructions briefly touches on the torque settings, but a quick search online will also support this information.
- CO2 / Lambda sensor = 32Nm (25 ft/lb)
- Back box bracket = 22Nm (16 ft/lb)
- Back box mounting bolts (12mm) = 22Nm (16 ft/lb)
- Header bolts (12mm) = 22Nm (16 ft/lb)
I just want to say THANK YOU, for being one of the few that actually turns the music off before showing the exhaust note. Really gets under my skin when some of these bellends leave the music up loud while showing exhaust notes.
Great video. Respect to you for keeping it real & crawling around in a car park. I did a cylinder head rebuild on a gsxr 600 in a car park just like yours, I can still remember the pain 🤣
Love this bike. Took it out for a test ride with the same exhaust on. 10 min later I was already popping wheelies with it. So easy to ride!
Hey mate great video and beautiful bike I just bought the cb650r and looks like I’m going to grab one of these exhausts now. 😄
Great video I’m saving up 👌
Great video very informative! Thank you sir
U r caring like a baby 🙌🏻🔥
Hello, I just wanted to thank you for such a detailed video with good tips about installation, also for the previous one with the DB killer removal. I was following both videos and successfully removed the db killer and installed the exhaust. I bought the same exhaust model as yours for my CB650R and it was an excellent choice. The sound is sooo massive, that this loudness and deepness cannot be recorded into video, so if someone is hesitating..... go for it, it's a beast! Also that exhaust popping is mental 🤯
No problem and I am glad it helped. It’s exactly why I made these videos in the first place, to help like minded people enjoy their machines 👍🏻👏🏻
Okay definetly need to buy myself one of these
Sounds great
Thanks a lot. Appreciate the torque specs in description as this specific info not listed in manual ffs and hard to find elsewhere
thanx, was really helpful
I did mine. Found a flatspot at the top end. Custom tune fixed that. Dyno 91hp at the wheel
Great vid! I been watching a few to prepare for this job and this was the greatest detail! Thanks
Thank you for tuning in. I have 2 other videos relating to this exhaust too.
One discussing the differences between the AFT and the HEGEHT and one showing the removal of the Db killer (without damaging it).
@@cbr650ruk3 thanks I had a look at them as well! I’m honestly not sure which one iv got coming and I was under the impression my baffle would have a hex head bolt that is tack welded…I guess I’ll see when it gets here. Thanks again!

@@cbr650ruk3 job is done. Pipe is on and sounds great. Your tips had me well prepared for an easy job
Thank you sharing bro
It's a shame the stock exhaust system is so heavy because imo, it's a work of art.
I agree. As far as stock exhausts go, it is a very good one and has nice style. To be honest, the note that came from it was really nice too, but I just wanted something louder and to be heard.
The Akrapovic follows that styling of being mounted under the bike, which is partly why I went for it. If you could easily decat and remove the baffles on the stock exhaust, I would lol
Underrated video. Really helpful.
Thank you. My YT videos and channel are aimed at helping people, so I am glad to see you enjoyed it and found it useful! There will be some other cool content coming to the channel, so stay tuned. 🤙🏻 safe riding
@@cbr650ruk3 yeah gonna buy the 2022 cbr650 r with an akrapovic slapped on it so these are just perfect lol
f*** yeah bro, liked you video, will do it by my self. cheers
I am glad the video was useful. That’s the whole point of the channel. If I can help people enjoy their bikes then it’s job done 👍🏻
Great video! Might do mine myself. Did you end up getting the cat for it?
Good 👍👍👍👍💪💪
You can put a site where you got the side wings ?
How to remove the muffler plug?
Hi! Thank you for this video, well explained. I just have one question: I bought the bike with the Arrow exhaust already on (without the catalyst converter), do I need to reprogram the bike if I put the original exhaust back on as it has a cat and lambda sensor might get confused and make the bike have a lean air/fuel ratio? Thanks!
I would say that is wise. The bikes maps may correct themselves, but the bike may have been remapped when the Arrow Exhaust was fitted. It may be an unknown, but I would always advise having the map checked
Awesome tutorial ... but I am NOT Removing the dB killer ... the Law here in Malaysia would hv me for a meal, & then some, if I i did - Also, I'd prefer a more natural & warmer sound :p
Whoaa ... That Roar is Raw !! 😎 Wud U need a re-tune on the Dyno after a full system swap like that ?
It does have an amazing sound and the audio still doesn’t do it justice.
I have risen the bike at various speeds and all through the Rev range and I can feel no flat spots. The Akrapovic exhausts are very good at not changing the bikes fuel ratios too much. I am going to get it back on a Dyno anyway and see what tweaks may need doing. The Power Commander has a setting for this exhaust which is selected, but could be tweaked
@@cbr650ruk3 Fitting a Power Commander on a new bike would instantly void the manufacturer's warranty, over here in Malaysia, and that's not a good thing coz the quality of bikes we get here often hv lots of defects & problems, so we must hv the warranty to claim against - It's Sad the Akra does not come with a Slip-on for this version 😭😔
@@phatbusted you will not regret getting the full system though! Even with the CAT and DB killer in 🙌🏻
Nice video! 🤙, Did you remove the other panel the other side? I'm doing my exhaust soon and I need to know if I need to unplug it when removing O2 sensor?
So I removed the plug end from its harness (bike side) before cracking off touching the CO2 sensor.
This ensures that when I cracked off and eventually removed the CO2 sensor? The wires would be able to spin freely without being fixed at the other end. Hope this helps and thanks for the comment 🤙🏻
@@cbr650ruk3 thanks for the reply 👍 what did you have to remove to get to the the o2 block (bike side) before cracking of the o2 sensor at the exhaust :)
@@deanowilliams3397 I just unplugged it from its harness (plug and play - male/female plug). Then it’s a 17mm spanner to just crack it off and leave hand tight until it’s time to remove completely.
@@deanowilliams3397 it is accessible without removing any panels (unless you have the extended side fairings like I now have).
@@cbr650ruk3 thank you pal saved me time 👍👍
Really respect the work . But think arak seems quite same as stock . Unfortunately Austin racing did not make full system for this bike
It’s night and day man… the stock exhaust sounds like a scooter 4000 rpm and below. This is throaty and full sounding bottom to top
Hi, first of all great guide. I have a question about tuning the bike after an exhaust change. I am planning to buy the same system for my cb650r and was wondering if you have noticed any powerband issues after the upgrade? I've heard a couple of people say that around 4000 rpm there is a very slight drop in power, barely noticeable but its still there. TL;DR - have you noticed any differenced in power output after the upgrade?
Hey, thanks for the kind words and for dropping a comment.
I personally have had absolutely no issues with power or flat spots since fitting the system. I was keeping it in mind, but I wanted to ride it first and run it through the full Rev range. I haven’t bothered getting the bike tuned or mapped because of this.
If anything the bike feels like it breathes more and it’s opened up. I have done a few side by side drags next to a Friend with the same bike (standard exhaust) and I pull away each time. Various speeds and various gears. I hope that helps 👍🏻
I have the CB650R one as well. That happens with or without the exhaust but 4000rpm it's super low for the CB650R. You have to be on top of the 8500rpm to wake up this baby. 4 cylinder.. so don't expect craziness at 4000rpm. He's not going to feel any drops since he has a CBR650R ours is the CB650 which is detuned version of his and CBR600rr so it's a totally different engine mapping. I think there are ways of erasing that drop behavior with a ECU flash. Check this video out. ua-cam.com/video/kpyzDy7Fpjs/v-deo.html
Lovely bike mate , is it legal to drive this akra without baffle in uk ?
I would not say its illegal, but I don’t think it would pass the MOT. I haven’t had any issues with it so far
Hi how long was just the removal of old exhaust pls? I’m gonna do that to save labour time at garage they will then pro fit cheers
Removal takes about 1 hour or so. It’s a really straight forward process!
Any tricky parts during the process?
That little sensor maybe?
Cheers from New Zealand and Kia Kaha!!
Wow, I think you are the first NZ comment, so thanks for tuning in.
I would say the most tricky part of the whole process, is getting the fairing on and off! Sounds silly, but it’s quite fiddly and you need to ensure all the clips are properly seated.
For the exhaust itself, it would probably be lining up the header pipes to the headers. Apart from that, it’s very straight forward. Akrapovic are a really well thought of and well made exhaust, which uses all of the standard bike holes.
Highly recommend it 👍🏻
Hi! Any ideas why the carbon tipped exhaust won't fit 2021 models?
I think the HEGEHT exhaust does fit the 2021 models, but I know there are slight differences.
I would recommend checking with Akrapovic on the website as I believe there is a table with exhaust models against the year of manufacture.
Hi can I know the front part of the exhaust spring connect to the engine what size is it ? My spring broke after using for a long time planning to replace new springs
Hey, thanks for tuning in to the channel. The original Akrapovic exhaust springs are listed as the PS-1 springs.
The schematic diagram is available on the Akrapovic website. They are 80mm (8cm) long and can be bought online.

I tore one of the O2 wires before watching this video… what do i do now😭
With the baffle in, does it still sound better than stock? Also, I am confused about passing the MOT. Does this lovely titanium system still have a catalytic converter in / would the bike still pass a standard UK MOT?
To be honest I don’t know. As you can see from my other video I removed the baffle before I fitted the exhaust, so I do not have a comparison, but I am sure it will on on YT somewhere.
My exhaust is not fitted with the CAT, but you can spec my model exhaust from the factory with a CAT fitted and you will have no trouble with the MOT. Mine is due it’s first MOT this year, so I will find out
May i ask sir what is the torque settings for the headers nuts? Thanks
Hey, they are detailed in the description of the video.
12mm - 22Nm (16 ft/lb)
I just did them tight. Need to check that
Hi thanks for this. Just did mine now but engine light came on. Any idea what could cause this?
What year is your bike? I would check the lambda sensor first and ensure it is secure and tight at the exhaust end and also that the connector end is secure.
Failing that, it may need a remap / flash. The fuel mixture might have changed due to the exhaust system (usually makes it run lean) and if it’s outside of the bikes ECU parameters it may bring up a fault code.
Those are my thoughts, but I would recommend having a look on forums or speak to your Honda dealer 👍🏻
@@cbr650ruk3 thanks for your swift response. It's a 2021. Would do another check.
@@cbr650ruk3 just an update, I took out the battery for a day then refitted it. The CEL has now cleared. Thanks
Hey, was it easy to remove the DB-killer ? Thinking about buying same exhaust for my CB650R. Thanks

@@cbr650ruk3 Woops, I didn't notice. Great, thank you !
Where did you get those cool winglets from mate?
So I bought these online, however, I was quite disappointed when I first got these as the Carbon side was a nice finish but the inside was terrible. When I removed them from the box, internally it was a really poor plastic mold. I ended up wrapping the inside of them in a satin black wrap to improve the finish.
This really changed the appearance and then I was happy to fit them. I am not willing to fit anything to the bike that is not to spec or standard. I recommend doing this to yours if you get them.
I sent a message to the company saying I wasn’t happy with them and they refunded me the money (which was good of them) and they also said keep the item.
I will drop the link to them on another comment below! 👇

@@cbr650ruk3 Cheers!
did you put in new gaskets?
No I didn’t. Reason being is the bike has only done 1,000 miles. I carried out a condition assessment on them, but in my view they didn’t require changing. Hope this helps
Bike runs ok? Fuel consumption? No need for a ecu retune?
Hey, yep the bike runs fine and fuel economy is not an issue. I travelled on a fairly long journey recently and on the motorway, I was averaging around thee 60mpg mark, which is pretty good.
I haven't mapped the ECU for the exhaust yet, but I am potentially going to update the Power Commander with the Akrapovic map for this exhaust.
@@cbr650ruk3 ty. Btw jusy saw the video with the side fairings, and your bike looks gorgeous. Almost makes me feel sad for trading my '13 600F for a cb1000r black edition. But at the same time not :p
Will it pass a sound test at a UK track day?
It’s a good question. I have not taken it to a track day yet, but I would say you could take the DB killer with you and fit it if it doesn’t.
how do i remove the db killer from this exhaust
Check out my channel. I have made a separate video on the DB killer removal and how to remove it without any damage. 👍🏻
ua-cam.com/video/JnsOI410wMA/v-deo.html
That's without the db Killer right?
Yes, that’s with DB killer removed. I have a video on how to remove it without any damage
@@cbr650ruk3 Yea sadly not legal to do in Germany, not for a bike which is euro-normed at least
Any backfire ??
The sound is incredible and you do get pops and crackles on gear changes and when the revs are reducing(check out my exhaust revs video).
There doesn’t seem to be any flat spots or issues with it running. However, I may get the bike put on a rolling road and mapped again to ensure it’s running spot on.
Why not take the baffle out
Is this omologated?
Yes, the exhaust I went for is homologated.
Ah-crop-ah-vitch. Every time I read it I'll say it wrong as well
way to loud..if you live out on the country, fine. But when you drive around town it is going to annoy a lot of people. Time for loud pipes are ending for a reason. Im an CB650R owner my self btw.
😩😩 radiator. . For Exuoas.
Livet .
If only Honda made the soundtuning of the stock exhaust to sound deep and not like a smokers cough...
@No_Name Haven't personally heard it live yet, so that could be true.
But the newer Kawasaki z900's sound really good as well
austin racing is best exust for 650r
I think it’s each to their own and a matter of opinion. I don’t disagree that the AR sounds amazing on the bike, but it doesn’t have the style or look that I wanted for my 650R.
This video is just to give people in the market for an Akrapovic a guide for installation. Safe riding 🤙🏻
Yeah ... if U want the Typical 'every other fella has one too' look & sound 🙄
It's nice you have a CO2 sensor on your bike. I wouldn't want to pass out from carbon dioxide poisoning. Of course, if you have an O2 sensor onboard, the oxygen will bring you back to life! Just sayin!
