    What? 10-15 minutes are you kidding me! My friend told me that I had to wait 6-8 hours before I could apply my acrylic paint. Omg thank goodness I watched this.

      They might be referring to sanding the gesso into a smooth surface ( which can take a few hours to do). Normal gesso will dry pretty quick (depending the environment you are in)
      Glad to help you out :)

    This whole channel is exactly what i searched for a few year ago. i wanted to paint some of the bob ross pictures but i couldn´t figure out, what this liquid white is, how and when to apply it, where to get it from (i never found it in german shops) and so on and so on.
    So.... a BIG THANK YOU for this channel. You are a big help! :)

    Thanks so much. I am an oil pastel artist and dislike heavy gritty textures but need some tooth. I want to try adding gesso to Sennelier oil pastel paper and Colourfix Smooth papers. Arches mixed media 500 series per comes only in white so I’m thinking a toned gesso might be perfect. Your information was extremely helpful. Completing my Blick order when I finish this comment.

      Let me know how it turns out - I will be interested. Since gesso it water based... you can thin it down for your papers texture too. This will allow you to play with the toothing more.
      Good Luck

    I just ordered some Bob Ross gray gesso to apply some old paintings so I can use these canvases for new paintings. I chose the gray so I can make sure I don't put on too thick a layer of liquid white. I did that and it was horrible. I really like your videos. Keep them coming.

    • @WildCreates
      @WildCreates  3 роки тому +1

      Ha ha ha yeah we all make that mistake when we start out. I think you would like using Grey gesso, It really helps at the start.

    • @ilovebunniessparks5121
      @ilovebunniessparks5121 3 роки тому +1

      Why was it horrible? Are you not supposed to use gray gesso and then liquid white on top?

    • @wetcoastclan
      @wetcoastclan 3 роки тому +3

      @@ilovebunniessparks5121 They are simply saying that too much liquid white makes this style of painting very difficult and, particularly when applying it to an already white canvas, it is difficult to know how much has been applied. Some people can tell by feel (how the brush moves/bends as you apply), but that is hard to judge. Tinting the gesso slightly to give it a gray hue helps you see when the entire canvas is covered when applying the liquid white, since only a very thin coat is needed. Hope this helped!

    Should you put gesso on the sides of all thicknesses of canvass frames? When doing your painting should you bring the sky, trees, whatever around to the sides of the canvass frame?

    • @WildCreates
      @WildCreates  2 роки тому +1

      LW isn't really considered a primer. Its more of a base medium.
      In short terms, gesso is uses to prep a painting surface. When it drys, it will give a little grit texture for the paint to grab onto and also seal the painting surface (stopping it from acting like a sponge)
      Hope that makes sense!

      I assumed that I could never paint. ,because I can’t draw . So I tried acrylic and I did good .
      However I really wanted to do oils , but my lungs are prone to pneumonia. But this Christmas list ,we don’t have much $ , I’ve asked for Gesso,and brushes. I wish I knew someone that was throwing stuff out,I’d pay for used stuff,I lost everything I ever worked for , it’s been really hard . But it’s going to take a long time to get all these supplies. If anyone out there is going to throw anything out , I’d gladly pay whatever I could.

    Wild: I’ve heard it from different online sources, that although gesso dries to the touch within 15-20 minutes, your supposed to wait anywhere from 2 hours to two days for it to dry completely. Personally, I’ve had good results after 15 minutes but I was curious to see what you thought. Is that just for non-wet in wet painting?

    • @WildCreates
      @WildCreates  3 роки тому +8

      Hard to answer that questions without knowing the thickness of the layer applied and if normal gesso vs heavy body vs mixed with other mediums.
      For most people (and wet on wet painters) a thin layer of gesso will dry fairly quickly :)
      Also go with what is best for you and don't be afraid to test for results.

    Ryan, Thank you so much for your reply on your other channel. I should of mentioned that I am only using acrylic paint not oil paint, plus the work is mainly abstract, therefore was deciding on whether to apply a thin layer of gesso. As the Windsor & Newton canvas comes primed, but I'll get to small canvasses and gesso one leave other without to see if it makes much difference to what I'm trying to achieve. Thank you for letting me know if was a foam roller that I need in this video, as it just confirmed my choice.
    One last question, could I just add a different colour of acrylic paint to achieve a different based colour gesso?
    Everyone if you haven't seen the video on applying black gesso, please go check it out!

      Normally NO - IT should be enough! But give it a feel with your fingers and see it if feels like a good coat. Sometimes the coverage isnt that good in some batches. Can also differ on the brand you buy.... If you buy too cheap, the coverage and be wonky.

How much gesso and how much liquid white shout I use to prep? things got muddy at times when I tried to blend and I wondered if I used too much gesso or liquid white. I used a feather touch to blend. I let the gesso dry for 45min to ensure it was dry. I used just enough liquid white to cover the gray gesso. I watched the liquid white video as well. Guess I’m not very confident yet. You can pre gesso you canvases and use them anytime after they are dry.

    Can gesso help stop crackling for oil painting? One painting of mine is crackling all over, not sure why one is and my older works are not.

      It can help it give it a better foundation BUT cracking generally is from the paint you used and how you applied it to the canvas. This is most common when you but too much thin paint on-top of thick paint. Thin paint drys way faster then the thick... so this will lead to cracking over time.
      I hope that helps

    I am new to canvas painting. So the Gesso have to be used directly or can I mix with water...

    • @WildCreates
      @WildCreates  3 роки тому

      Just use it straight out of the bottle and you will be good.
      You can mix it with water... but thats more for advanced effects.

    Can i add oil paint to add colour to gesso? I am using water mixable oil paints.

    • @WildCreates
      @WildCreates  4 роки тому

      No you can not - They do not mix.
      You can add acrylic to gesso though - If you want to tone the gesso
