I varnished a painting that was primed with balck acrylic had dried completely for close to a year. The gamvar varnish removed some of the oil paint and ruined the painting. I think there is a better adhesion with the gesso like you mentioned. Just a heads up for those that go to varnish a black canvas that was primed with acrylic. Yes you can start painting with out those.... Just know that you canvas may soak up more paint and it might not flow as much. Which could require you to use more paint over all.
Hard to answer your question, because I am not sure what you mean in your terms of "more quality?" I linked an article on mediums and chalk, hopefully it helps you out: www.naturalpigments.com/artist-materials/oil-paint-mediums/
@@WildCreates oh .i said "more quantity" But it's ok u can answer my other question Is acrylic gel medium is the same as the regular acrylic medium but more concentrated? Because if so i can mix it with latix paint which is very cheap and add water and I'll get a great amount of good quality of gesso
Oh sorry i miss read it. Whenever you add something you are technically diluting or shifting the integrity of the paint or medium. So think about ratios when doing so, this way you can increase the quantity while maintaining the quality or increase it. For number 2, Yes you can do that and many painters do. If you use color, its called toning your canvas with an acrylic wash. An acrylic wash is made by thinning paint with a lot of water. Thinning reduces both the amount of acrylic and pigment in the mixture. When a wash dries you end up with widely dispersed pigment particles settled down into and on the painting surface, with a very small amount of acrylic binder Hope that helps
Mix gesso with a matte acrylic color to avoid your base coat from glossing which can make it hard for paint to stick to if you plain on painting on top of it.
Overall not much - I am sure there are differences like how its made, one may have more binder in it, How thick of thin one is, one might be better for sanding for smooth surfaces..ETC... I only have experience and knowledge in the way that I use it (which is mostly for landscapes and pours) - In that aspect there are close to similar.
I made my Gesso, when it dried, it was like touching a chalk board, your fingers would be white with dust like a chalk eraser , I made it like the directions said, question is, is this the way it is supposed to be
There are different versions of gesso, and I am not sure what recipe you used. If you are using it for painting, there should be no residue or dust coming off it - That would make for weak paint adhesion.
hmm does gesso smell bad to you? To me just smells like acrylic paint or maybe glue. I will have to take a look BUT if it is off putting to your nose you can always make your own. Or you can use an acrylic matte paint that is more to the liking of your nose.
Dumb Idea - you can add some water to the gesso to thin it down. This will lessen the smell.. Later on I will give my gessos a sniff and see which brand I own is less smelly for ya ha ha ha
You can - But you have to be careful.... Nowadays a lot of house paints and primers have additives (like odor-eaters, thickening agents, etc) in them that will affect oil paint. Make sure to look at the labels.
Generally yes BUT if you watch a few of my other tip videos... you will see that the coatings can be cheap, sparse or patchy. Depends on the brand so be sure to check.
Soft Body Acrylic Paint by Artist's Loft®, 32oz. ($12.99) Liquitex® White Gesso, 32oz ($44.99) It's not just a few bucks, it's more than triple the price... I'll stick to acrylics
While your process is true. Even though your numbers are off, cause a bucket of Liquitex WG 64 oz is only $30 on amazon right now & AL White (in my store) is $10. Comparing these two brands isn't really even. I personally believe from my experience that Liquitex is a better quality compared to Artist Loft... BUT each serve their purpose. Go with what works best for your style and wallet.
Some is made internationally like Canada, England, ETC... but there are many american one too. Try your local Micheals store... I was just there and they still had good stock.
Don't buy Bob Ross products because all your doing is supporting the people who ripped Bob Ross amd his family off. Bob Ross lovers boycott the products and those who stole his name!

@@WildCreates yup that will help.
I'll just get s medium and a latix paint to prepare a bunch of canvases
QUESTION WHAT IF WE MIX GESSO AND THE COLOR ACRYLIC PAINT TO COLOR UP SOMETHING? :)
You can, I just recommend that you use a matte acrylic color
@@WildCreates YOU MEAN MATTE ACRYLIC COLOR IS JUST LIKE THE RESULT OF MIXING ACRYLIC AND THE GESSO? :)
Mix gesso with a matte acrylic color 🔥
@@WildCreates DID YOU TRY THAT BEFORE? THE EFFECT WILL GLOSS? JUST ASKING WHO HAS A EXPERIENCE THAN ME BEFORE GONNA TRY IT :)
Mix gesso with a matte acrylic color to avoid your base coat from glossing which can make it hard for paint to stick to if you plain on painting on top of it.
whats the difference between Liquitex and bob ross's gessos
Overall not much - I am sure there are differences like how its made, one may have more binder in it, How thick of thin one is, one might be better for sanding for smooth surfaces..ETC...
I only have experience and knowledge in the way that I use it (which is mostly for landscapes and pours) - In that aspect there are close to similar.
What if I coat the acrylic with matte deco podge
I think if you use acrylic paint you will be fine BUT I can't say 100% because I have never tried it. I would do a test painting to be sure.
Can you lightly sand the acrylic paint to get the shine off
I have never really tried that approach. I normally just just dull or matte acrylic instead. That way I dont have to worry about it.
It was just a thought I am just learning the wet on wet
can i use gesso as white acrylic paint? i don't have the white acrylic paint 😭
You can in a pinch but it wont has the same finish and constancy as your acrylic paint.
I would recommend getting some white paint when you can :)
@@WildCreates I will have to try another recipe or buy the real thing, thanks for the reply and the information
Pls make a video on how to make gesso at home 💙
To be honest I have never made my own.... But I will see what I can do for ya :)
can i use flat wall enamel as gesso alternative?
It sure, never used it. Send me a link to it and I will check.
@@WildCreates i don't have any
Can you get a scent-free Gesso?
hmm does gesso smell bad to you? To me just smells like acrylic paint or maybe glue.
I will have to take a look BUT if it is off putting to your nose you can always make your own. Or you can use an acrylic matte paint that is more to the liking of your nose.
@@WildCreates Thank you. Ya, I find it stronger and more chemical when the paints.
Dumb Idea - you can add some water to the gesso to thin it down. This will lessen the smell.. Later on I will give my gessos a sniff and see which brand I own is less smelly for ya ha ha ha
Sounds good. Lol
Why not just Latex House Paint? (it's acrylic) and much cheaper than Basics or Windsor Newton
You can - But you have to be careful.... Nowadays a lot of house paints and primers have additives (like odor-eaters, thickening agents, etc) in them that will affect oil paint. Make sure to look at the labels.
@@WildCreates
Any particular additives that I should avoid most (not too worried about my stuff being archival)
Gesso is hard to find. I've always used acrylic paint as a base.
Gesso should be easier to find now that it is become more popular - You can always find links to it in my videos. But acrylic works great too :)
aren't most canvas's already prepped?
Generally yes BUT if you watch a few of my other tip videos... you will see that the coatings can be cheap, sparse or patchy. Depends on the brand so be sure to check.
Soft Body Acrylic Paint by Artist's Loft®, 32oz. ($12.99)
Liquitex® White Gesso, 32oz ($44.99)
It's not just a few bucks, it's more than triple the price...
Go with what works best for your style and wallet.
local gesso from made in art stores is atleast cheaper where i am
I am glad you found a solution for you :)
Having trouble finding craft acrylic paint, is it made in China or something?
Some is made internationally like Canada, England, ETC... but there are many american one too.
Try your local Micheals store... I was just there and they still had good stock.
Thanks!🎨 JESUS bless you! 🙏🏾🙌🏾✝️
Glad I could help you out
Gesso has a tooth to the surface to enable the paint to adhere to, acrylic paint doesn't have a tooth to the finished surface.
I am glad the video could educate you on that
I just cheap man and have a lot of heavy body white acrylic paint
Go with whatever works for ya :)
Don't buy Bob Ross products because all your doing is supporting the people who ripped Bob Ross amd his family off. Bob Ross lovers boycott the products and those who stole his name!
