Great video, I have been painting wet on wet now for 5 years and still struggle at times with mud mixing. Letting things get tacky or dry is the best tip, I don't know where I learned this but gently placing a clean shop paper towel on the canvas where you want to add another layer of paint for half an hour to an hour really speeds this process up.
Yeah do that sometimes too - The towel will soak up a lot of the lose medium in the paint... thus making it firmer. It really helps for when you want to apply highlights and such.
Hi Wild Guy!, I'm been painting on and off for a few years. Always said I'm not the artist my child is. But they gave me confidence and watching your video I'm so ready to finish the painting that I started 6 months ago. Before I go away, I really want to tell you how awesome this video is. I will be looking for more that's for sure. Stay well and keep that wild presentation on for all of us!
Ok so I painted for the first time ever last week! I went to a paint like Bob Ross experience bought for me as a present.. I spent the day with the coolest guy and some others and came home with my proud painting! 👏🏼 yay! (My mountains sucked but hey my first painting) I've seen all 6million episodes of the joy of painting so decided to grab some canvases, brushes, paint and an easel and go for it.. I mean how hard can it be! VERY is the answer to that!! Made some bad ass northern lights on a black canvas!! Was going proper well until I wanted to put the trees underneath! I have no idea what went wrong but can't get highlights to stick and ended up just overworking the whole thing until it was mush!! Then I saw this video! Thanks so much! Fresh canvas out and a new teacher in you to guide me!! Let's go paint some happy little accidents! 😊

This video has so much in it. after thanking the video a few days ago. I came back and even learned more. this is top end instructions. no other talks about the 25%.... You Rock Wild
Can’t thank you enough for your time and hints with acrylics! Beyond helpful and things I can actually remember. (Maybe not all of them at once but I’m writing them down)

You are my hero Ryan! I love these tips. I wish i had seen this video a long time ago. I learned many of these lessons the hard way...i have made soooo much mud! But thinning the second color, and wiping off the canvas (and sometimes brush too) are huge game changers. It took me Forever to figure out to let it dry and step away before moving 21:06 on. Everything in this video is spot on, the best advice! I soo wish i had gotten from day one 🙃
Thanks for the awesome words buddy. The good news is you have me and this channel to help you out now. I am glad that the video can help you with some awesome insights. Keep them brushes wet buddy 🔥
One tip that Bill Alexander said was to apply your liquid white, then take a clean dry brush and go over it vertically then horizontally once and you should have the right amount, along with the finger test. Thanks for another great video!
That is pretty much what I do too BUT when you add that layer of grey gesso first... It is so easy to see where you have no liquid medium and where you have too much 💪
@@WildCreates You videos have helped me a lot on my paintings. I got better almost instantly following your videos. Thanks for the content, I know it takes a lot of time and effort to make the videos
Super excellent advice throughout this video. The first step to becoming a great painter is paint management! After you learn how to stop mixing mud is when you really start seeing your paintings really come to life. Also, +100 to the paper towel method!
Yes those shop towels are on another level... Like legit ha ha ha. I also checked out your painting video... can't wait to see more from ya in future videos 💪
@@WildCreates haha oh no! I wasn't ready for someone important to see those yet lol. I'm still very, very new to making videos and with some time hoping my quality will improve!
Thank you so much for all the helpful info. I really, really needed info on why my paintings turned out so awful. Thanks to YOU , I now have a good chance of doing a great oil painting. I will be watching all your videos. When I become rich & famous , I will acknowledge you as my mentor !!!
Heck Ya Buddy - I am glad I can help you on your creative journey. We will call it even by you smashing that SUB button and when you do become RICH & FAMOUS... Toss a few dollars lil ole WILD'S way 😂😂😂
The layer of grey gesso has literally been the problem solver for too much liquid white… and my wild man -WOOOWWW too much is wayyy worse than not enough.. I had way too much of something for once and the grey gesso has done the trick. Wish grey prepped canvass were more available… glad I learned that tip from u- bob doesn’t really emphasize this much in his vids. 😊 keep it up bro!!!
Hi Wild i am a new artist and your techniques have helped me out so far, i was really struggling with mountains, when i went to put snow on them it was smearing and looked flat and horrible, since wiping of access paint its a lot better, thank you my friend, you totally rock!!!! 🙂
I am glad that I could help you out buddy. I just did a short that should help you with mountain breaks too. Take a look: ua-cam.com/users/shortsaDq-IvKcCMY?feature=share Make sure to hit that sub button for more helpful tips.
Dude. I feel so lucky to have this knowledge now. Thank you thank you thank you. You restored my confidence. I don’t know why your channel isn’t bigger.
Thank you for this video! So many great tips. I'm so glad I stuck around until the very end for the last bit. I KNOW my biggest problem is getting into that mindset that I need to do this in 30-60 min like I see Ross, Alexander and numerous other wet on wet painters do in their videos. You are the first one that I have seen that has said it is OK to put it aside and come back hours or even days later and pick up where you left off. To me that is a HUGE piece of information. I've been discouraged lately and this gives me the inspiration to drag everything out and start painting again!
Yeah - I started out the same way. Finish in the same time as the tutorial. When you slow down you enjoy it so so so much more AND you really see a difference. Hence why I like to pop a nice bottle of whiskey and wine when I paint... Thats the true painting hack there ha ha ha
I have this problem too, but i like to finish the day I start. I find by the next day, week, any time later, I cant get in the same headspace and I want to start a new piece. I find myself starting way more pieces than I ever finish.
If you find yourself in that spot - I find it best to do more simplistic paintings. This way you know you will finish in the time you want to dedicate to it.
@@WildCreates wish I had watched it a long time ago. Some of the tips seem so simple! I guess because for years I’ve had the mentality that if I “didn’t see Bob Ross do it”, it doesn’t need to be done. LOL. I never thought about the time constraints they had back in the day. Thank goodness for UA-cam, as you have shown me the light!
Wow! What a GREAT video. I just finished my very first painting and, though I'm proud of it, I totally see mud mixing. You were right, this new painter is guilty of all of the sins listed here. I'll be applying these new skills for painting #2. I expect I'll see a lot of improvement if I'm able to apply even a small fraction of them. Thanks man!!
Glad this video was helpful - NO JOKE watch this video again before you do painting #2 and that painting will be 10x better. Painting the same thing twice in a row is a great skill builder. Can't wait to see what you paint.
I struggle with over-working and adding. Two tips that help me (I paint with acrylic). One: use a wet pallet - I tended to not want to waste paint lol Have another canvas beside what you are working on. I use “junk” canvas that I know will be a mess because I know I need to leave the good project alone but am still in the mood to paint.
Thank you. You're a great teacher. I've learned so much. You make it fun, too. It probably could be boring if someone just stood there talking in regular sentences without attempts at keeping our interest focused. I love the little acrylic landscape. I'm going to try something that size. I don't see why you don't use reference photos. It's got to be much harder without reference. I couldn't do that. See if you can take some good photos and give it a try. I think you'd be happy at how it would open more possibilities for you.
I am glad I can make you smile, laugh and educate all at the same time. It brings me a lot of pleasure to help you on your creative journey. I use reference when I want to paint certain pieces BUT I also like to paint with out one ( it creates a great challenge ). If you plan on taking and using reference photos, I made a great video on it if you wanna check it out: ua-cam.com/video/-9chByzT1cg/v-deo.html
I didn’t get to watch the whole video the first time. Just watched it again. Your tips are so so valuable!!! You have answered all the questions I babe beem asking myself. You are so good. Thank you once again. Your videos are the best and so informative!!! Did I mention you always answer questions unlike many others here. A huge thank you 😊
@@WildCreates well. All 😄. But the one about the clouds. Leaving some white areas and / or Taking off a bit of Color. Using thinner paint for shrubs and also I kept wondering if I could walk away half way in my painting and kept thinking I had to finish in one go. No I know I can stop and come back in a day or two. I am really not experienced at all so I wasn’t sure. Bob Ross makes it look so easy. My first attempt at paint was your tutorial ( I wish I could send you ) and since I am hooked Thank you so much. 😊😊
Thank you so much for your words of wisdom! I am working on my 1st major art project and am at a frustrating point of a muddy mess! I hope I can pull it out but if not, now I know what not to do! Y!!ou have given me great advice.
Great video Wild. While I don’t paint wet on wet anymore, except for some medium on the sky, Ever since I saw I could just use shoppe towels to wipe my undercoat it made a huge improvement. Side note, I remember u talked about hanging paintings on a wall in a video somewhere and I was wondering which video it was. I need a more efficient way of hanging a canvas without damaging the wall. Cheers !
I have not made that video yet - I am redoing my loft ( which has art work I will hang ) I figure that will be the best to show how I do it. 2 birds 1 stone kinda thing ha ha ha
Just love all the helpful tips and tricks you present as I start out on my wet on wet painting journey! None of them were included in the Bob Ross videos to my knowledge.
Glad I can help you out on your creative journey. I know what it is like to be lost when starting out with painting... this channel will be perfect for you.
there are a one or two things you pointed out that I will try that I haven't heard before. With that said, I am a Master mud mixer. 😂 I really struggle with layering, If I'm only dealing with sky, water, and a slim layer of land I'm fine. I think I just end up with too much paint. I will try the wipe off method for areas I'm trying to build. with that said, I have had some success with waiting 12+ hrs (the next day) to continue. This may indeed be just a situation of too many/thick paint when I push forward in a single setting.
@@WildCreates the video confirmed what I was thinking, too much paint, so simply wiping it off w/ a paper towel, never occurred to me, even though I've seen Bob saying 'if you don't like it just scrape it off', well he seemed to always use the knife to do it, and I had terrible results attempting that method lol. the other one, which I've done but just never heard it mentioned before, just walk away, leave it, come back later or the next day. I just figured I was frustrated/lazy, or too drunk. (at times, all the above lol). Sometimes it did help if I didn't already go too far with it, which may or may not go hand in hand with the just stop fiddling with it, stop overworking a problem Though, I'm curious, if I walk away and it dries, what do you do to 'rewet' the canvas to continue? I've tried painting atop the dried paint with minimal success and I've tried applying liquid clear with moderate success. (still think I use too much of that shit, I can't see it) 🤷 oh, and since I just re-watched the video, I did like the tip about loading the brush and testing the application while on the palette. I've done it without realizing I was and it does help to know what my brush is doing before I use it on the canvas.
Those blue shop towels are the best. When it comes to walking away and re-wetting the canvas there is a trick to it..... You generally want to stop and start at a section that will be easy to rewet ( ie: after you finish the sky and clouds, mountain ranges, ETC). This will make it easy..... DONT do it when you are half way through something like a tree or land... it wont look or blend right. Yeah I learned that tip from a CRI private lesson I got when I first started painting. That helps a ton with minimizing mistakes.
@@WildCreates well after doctoring the one I left overnight to 'tacky up' it does look better looking at it today. and today, I'm trying to pay attention to how much paint I'm applying as I do the sky and initial water, trying to ensure I get it thinned out before I move to the mountain, and then onto the 'land' portion :\ bane of my existence at this point
@@WildCreates The grouping of so many tips in one video that has taken me months of watching various painters to collect. I have followed you, Bob, Bill, and Kevin for months... but you brought many of their (and your) key tips into one place. The last of your video you said Slow Down! I heard you say this a few months ago. "We are not BR or BA.... and we should not expect to complete a painting in 30 minutes." I slowed down and had more fun and better outcomes. Someone just had to give me permission. While this tip is just mentioned here in passing, hopefully others who are just becoming Wild fans will catch it, too.
Slowing down helps so so so MUCH. Not only do I get to enjoy it more ( cause there is less pressure ) but I also find myself taking more time with each brush stroke.... Which pays off :)
@@WildCreates We see EXPERIENCED MASTER painters slamming the colors and highlights on so rapidly, se are better served by slowing down and seeing one's strokes put life into the painting giving more joy and satisfaction.
I have a few art friends that spend days, weeks and even month on a single painting. I will have to do a video with them so people can see that perspective.
I always pre prep my canvas panels. But my panels already are coated whit primer wen i buy them from the hardware store in the netherlands. Thats were i live😊👍🏾😁👋🏾✌🏾 i love this video
Hi Love your videos .. I’m no Rembrandt but learning a lot…. Question - oil vs water based oil paints…I’m trying to determine which is best … the Turpine (spelling sorry - TBI messes me up) … use and disposal … want to be environmental safe …. Not sure having the waste and reused liquid around … dont have a studio just sunroom with lots of windows I open with working only… help please …you rock!
When it comes to water mixable oils I have 2 videos on it you can watch and learn here: WM oil: ua-cam.com/video/r7GEA8ag7Hk/v-deo.html WM Medium: ua-cam.com/video/F012kE0o1nw/v-deo.html For Thinners, it that SUB button... I have a few videos coming out in the next few weeks on healthy options.
@@WildCreates The first part about the overly wet canvas I found helpful as I seem to get to a point where I have too much wet paint on the canvas and everything blends together. In general though it was a great video for anyone trying to advance their skills. I sometimes take 3 days to complete a painting. Mostly because I can think a bit paint a bit and enjoy the ride.
Oh Goodness, this video has answered so much. this great thank you so much. its like the light bulb lit up over my head. this video needs to be pushed so much. . again thank you

Keep up the good work WILD your helping me and I'm sure a lot of others too .regards from London England.
Its never a failed painting when you learn from it.... Just think of it as a "Stepping Stone Painting" 😂😂😂😂 Those stepping stones will eventually help you make some awesome art down the road.
Amazing video! I just started painting about four months ago and your channel has dramatically improved my skills. I've binge watched the entire channel. I'm crushing mountains, clouds and trees thanks to your videos. I just can't crush the bushes... (pause for laughter) Sometimes they come out amazing and other times, the are giant gloops (if thats a word) or i use too little paint on the brush and it is more of faint whisper of a bush. I'm going to test a few things out you suggest about testing on the pallet but wanted to ask if you are going to make a video on hills? Hills seem to come out so easy in videos i watch but even if i manage to not make it a giant mix of mud, it looks absolutely nothing like a hill. Perhaps i'm overworking them. At best, its just some lighter and darker areas of color. I haven't been able to find a solid video on how to make hills actually look like hills. thanks
Let me just say you are very welcome and that the BUSHES ARE THE DEVIL. I still struggle with them. In one of my next videos coming out. I will be talking about getting paint and highlights to stick. I think that video will help you with your bushes for sure. Until then, This video here might help you with some issues you might be having with Bloops. It has a ton of tips in it. ua-cam.com/video/AnGE7AYu9RY/v-deo.html
@@WildCreates Thanks! saw it already but watched again... one thing i forgot to mention which virtually no one else does that i super appreciate is the super close up of the brush on the palate. really helps to see how your applying the paint on the brush. keep it up!

Hello Wild - You are such a help Thank you. When you say you can leave a painting and come back days later, and just to :rewet" the Canvas, do you do that with Liquid clear or a Gamblin Solvent Free Gel ? Thanks for helping
You can do it with any liquid base medium ( if it is needed ). Generally I will use a little bit of Liquid White BUT it really depends on the painting and style. I hope that helps.
Hey awesome videos. I will try my very first painting tomorrow and i am really nervous... Did i get this right: i can mix some liquid white into titanium white to make easier clouds and other things?
Hi I'm just watching this video. And you mentioned about not putting too much paint on the brush I understand that this Oil painting but my question is as a newbie to painting is it the same when us Acrylic paint 🎨 🖌️ ? Thanks Phil
It depends on the style of acrylic paint you are using... BUT a good rule of thumb is to always start with a little because you can always add more... while removing too much can be tough.
I just started painting and I started with Bob Ross videos. I know he says thinner will stick to thicker and it does. I still get smears maybe your new advise will help me with that. I hope. The first painting I did was so pretty like perfect. Now they are slacking not sure what I am doing differently but now I can't get the colors mixed right and I am smearing when highlighting trees and bushes oh and I still haven't figured out the whole grass thing. I am not quitting just venting at myself. Thank you for the advise I will incorporate in.
when it comes to smears its all about paint consistency and brush pressure which can all be fixed with......... Practice. he he he. It just takes time and repetition. Before you know it, you will nail every painting you do.
you put a lot of effort into this video and it's great, thanks for all the tips! just have to ask, how would one go about re-wetting the canvas if the paint dried?🙂
Thanks for the awesome comment. To answer you question - just simple re-wet the sections you want to work on and lightly blend it inn to match. You will most likely have to work inn smaller sections BUT don't over think it :)
Glad you liked the video. I use a mix of brushes BUT the main ones you see in the videos are my Bob Ross Brushes from the kits and singles I have bought. Amazing video and really answering many of my questions. Though I have a question if you have a video, or planning to make one, about how to make your colors more fat for sky or details? Also, can you use liquid white with it, if you're already using titanium white for something like clouds or ripples in the water?
Hello there. I've been watching your videos for a while but I just started painting. I got liquin light gel by winsor and newton because that's what the art shop had. Do you think it will work fine ?
Honestly if you are just staring out Liquitex basics acrylics are great. If you plan on getting any remember to go through my links to help support: geni.us/BasicWhiteAcrylic
I plan on making a video on this ( cause there is a little to it ) BUT i find it easy to stop at a place you know you can easily continue from (IE mountains, clouds, sky, etc ) The just take your liquid medium and work it into section you need to paint. Stop with only a little and add as needed. Working in sections is key

Wild I have to agree with you that this is one of the best tutorials you have done! These tips are great foe new painters and the more experienced as well. Finally someone actually discussed not having to keep up with Bob or Bill or anyone else. Thank you again for a great video.

One tip that Bill Alexander said was to apply your liquid white, then take a clean dry brush and go over it vertically then horizontally once and you should have the right amount, along with the finger test. Thanks for another great video!
That is pretty much what I do too BUT when you add that layer of grey gesso first... It is so easy to see where you have no liquid medium and where you have too much 💪
@@WildCreates yes I like using the Grey gesso too
Its a life saver at times
I like all of your videos but this one was great. Opened my eyes to many of my struggles.
Glad this one could come in clutch for ya.

Thanks for the tips!!
You are super welcome :)
Thanks Wild great tips which I'm sure will help😁🏴

Glad to help you on your painting adventure 💪
Very good advice, Young Wild. The best tip was the last one. I occasionally teach people to paint and always recommend your channel to them.
Thank you for all the awesome support that you give - You are an amazing human being
Hi Wild i am a new artist and your techniques have helped me out so far, i was really struggling with mountains, when i went to put snow on them it was smearing and looked flat and horrible, since wiping of access paint its a lot better, thank you my friend, you totally rock!!!! 🙂

Heck ya Michael.
I am glad that I could enlighten you.... Now you will dominate your paintings.
@@WildCreates thanks cheers

@@WildCreates wish I had watched it a long time ago. Some of the tips seem so simple! I guess because for years I’ve had the mentality that if I “didn’t see Bob Ross do it”, it doesn’t need to be done. LOL. I never thought about the time constraints they had back in the day. Thank goodness for UA-cam, as you have shown me the light!
I am just glad that I can open your eyes now with all these awesome tips I am giving 💪

I struggle with over-working and adding. Two tips that help me (I paint with acrylic). One: use a wet pallet - I tended to not want to waste paint lol
Have another canvas beside what you are working on. I use “junk” canvas that I know will be a mess because I know I need to leave the good project alone but am still in the mood to paint.
Thanks for sharing your tips and tricks with the community ❤
Cool pink clouds❤👋🏾✌🏾👍🏾😁

Hello Wildcreates me too😁✌🏾👍🏾
Great video!
Thanks Budd- I hope it helps you on your painting adventures.
If you plan on taking and using reference photos, I made a great video on it if you wanna check it out:

Thank you once again. Your videos are the best and so informative!!! Did I mention you always answer questions unlike many others here. A huge thank you 😊
Thanks for the awesome comment and curious to know - which tip or tips helped you most?
@@WildCreates well. All 😄. But the one about the clouds. Leaving some white areas and / or Taking off a bit of Color. Using thinner paint for shrubs and also I kept wondering if I could walk away half way in my painting and kept thinking I had to finish in one go. No I know I can stop and come back in a day or two. I am really not experienced at all so I wasn’t sure. Bob Ross makes it look so easy. My first attempt at paint was your tutorial ( I wish I could send you ) and since I am hooked Thank you so much. 😊😊

You can do it! I believe in you - Just go slow and take your time.
I would love to see it when its all done.
2 birds 1 stone kinda thing ha ha ha

there are a one or two things you pointed out that I will try that I haven't heard before. With that said, I am a Master mud mixer. 😂
I really struggle with layering, If I'm only dealing with sky, water, and a slim layer of land I'm fine.
I think I just end up with too much paint. I will try the wipe off method for areas I'm trying to build.
with that said, I have had some success with waiting 12+ hrs (the next day) to continue. This may indeed be just a situation of too many/thick paint when I push forward in a single setting.
I am curious to what those one to two things were?
@@WildCreates the video confirmed what I was thinking, too much paint, so simply wiping it off w/ a paper towel, never occurred to me, even though I've seen Bob saying 'if you don't like it just scrape it off', well he seemed to always use the knife to do it, and I had terrible results attempting that method lol.
the other one, which I've done but just never heard it mentioned before, just walk away, leave it, come back later or the next day. I just figured I was frustrated/lazy, or too drunk. (at times, all the above lol).
Sometimes it did help if I didn't already go too far with it, which may or may not go hand in hand with the just stop fiddling with it, stop overworking a problem
Though, I'm curious, if I walk away and it dries, what do you do to 'rewet' the canvas to continue? I've tried painting atop the dried paint with minimal success and I've tried applying liquid clear with moderate success. (still think I use too much of that shit, I can't see it) 🤷
oh, and since I just re-watched the video, I did like the tip about loading the brush and testing the application while on the palette.
Baby steps my friend.... baby steps ha ha ha
Thanks, came on best time
Glad I could help you out - We will call it even by you hitting that SUB button.
Wild.. one of your best videos by far!
Thanks buddy.... Curious to know, what was your favorite tip or what helped you most?
Glad you enjoyed the video

Curious to know which tip was best for your or helped you the most?
@@WildCreates The first part about the overly wet canvas I found helpful as I seem to get to a point where I have too much wet paint on the canvas and everything blends together. In general though it was a great video for anyone trying to advance their skills. I sometimes take 3 days to complete a painting. Mostly because I can think a bit paint a bit and enjoy the ride.

Cool video

How did it go?
Yes you can - if you need more help with clouds... be sure to check out this video here: ua-cam.com/video/i4ax8C8H47o/v-deo.html
Thank you!!
You are super welcome.

@@WildCreates you're welcome :) you mean re-wetting with just plain water will do the trick? nice, thanks a lot :)
If you are using oil paint you will want to re wet the canvas with either some liquid white or a liquid clear medium.
@@WildCreates thank you very much! ❤ i'm very new to painting as it shows, sorry for the stupid questions🤣

Amazing video and really answering many of my questions. Though I have a question if you have a video, or planning to make one, about how to make your colors more fat for sky or details? Also, can you use liquid white with it, if you're already using titanium white for something like clouds or ripples in the water?
One of my next videos coming up with be about "How To Get Paint To Stick" - I will do my best to answer your question in that video for ya Nick 😝
Man I'm catching up on a backlog of videos. This one was on a whole other level.
Thanks for supporting. This video right here seems to be the one everyone love the most. So many helpful tips.
Hello there. I've been watching your videos for a while but I just started painting. I got liquin light gel by winsor and newton because that's what the art shop had. Do you think it will work fine ?
liquin light is a good medium. it will work for you once you learn the correct ratios on how to use it. Just takes practice is all
I am a first-time painter, but what do you suggest to use instead of gamblin because I'm going to be using acrylic
Honestly if you are just staring out Liquitex basics acrylics are great. If you plan on getting any remember to go through my links to help support: geni.us/BasicWhiteAcrylic
How do you "re-wet" your painting if you continue a few days later ? (after you wait to tacky up) Love your great tips
I plan on making a video on this ( cause there is a little to it ) BUT i find it easy to stop at a place you know you can easily continue from (IE mountains, clouds, sky, etc )
The just take your liquid medium and work it into section you need to paint. Stop with only a little and add as needed. Working in sections is key
