    I found out the hard way that while you can be frugal when buying your first supplies, there is a limit to how cheap you can go. I bought my first oil paints and brushes just last week at W.M. The $5 set of oil paints and the cheap artists brush sets can do more harm than good for beginners like myself. I almost gave up on painting when none of the techniques that I saw in the many YT videos I watched would work for me and my brushes started falling apart after just one use (I discovered that the glue holding them together dissolves in mineral spirits.) As soon as I bought some of the "cheap" paints similar to the ones suggested in this vid, the techniques that I couldn't get to work before suddenly worked beautifully. I rebuilt the brushes and now have usable paint so the hobby I started to try to lower my stress levels is no longer stressing me out and I am making successful first steps in this new journey.

    After watching youtube videos of Bob painting for the last 3 years I'm finally headed to FL for a week-long class. I have always liked artsy stuff, even considered it as a career in school before deciding to beat nails with a hammer. aka Carpenter. For a short while, I changed careers and owned a T-Shirt shop and I did all the graphics. I do 3-d modeling/plans for my business now. So it's time to try my hand at painting. Because I'm a carpenter and very creative thinking outside the box I'm already looking at making some of what I will need like an easel, palette knives, and palettes ( I have been saving the plexiglass scraps from some of our builds). I've used natural bristle brushes for construction using latex paint so somewhat familiar. As I get closer to "retirement" I'm building the wood shop I always wanted and hopefully, painting will be one of many things I take up. Time will tell. PS- When it comes to tools I always opted for the best I could get. They work better and last longer so I'll carry that thru.

    I'm not really an artist, I do sporadic projects that may or may not require paint (more of a cosplayer, lol.) One of the projects I want to do came to me after I bought a package of wooden slices (I wanted just a couple for coasters, but I found out coasters are ridiculously expensive.) I had thought about it and realized one of the things I always wanted to do for my dad (who ADORES Bob Ross) is to 1) let him take an official class from a CRI, and 2) replicate a painting for him. But, I'm a college student that's down on her luck trying to find work, so budget is crucial to me. This video really helped to put my mind at ease and covers all the bases for the lingering questions I had. I appreciate when content creators are willing to create budget-friendly videos, because it feels like they're keeping people like me in mind, who don't have a whole lot of income or an influencer's bank account. Thanks so much!

    • @WildCreates
      @WildCreates  3 роки тому +1

      I am glad that I can help you and your dad. If you are thinking of getting him a BR gift take a look at this video ( ua-cam.com/video/uq6UR_jc138/v-deo.html ) a ton of great suggestions and different price points.
      Also if you wanna make coasters. A cheap and affective solution is to buy either Small white square tiles at a hardware shop ( about a $1 ) or Circular wood disks at an art store ( also about $1 ) you can easily paint on these. If you seal them or put a protective coating on them make easy and awesome coasters... You are welcome :)

    I've been painting for 4 years now. I've come a long way (and there's still a long way to go). I normally watch the videos and don't respond, but I had to respond to this one. Canvas is expensive. Dollar General (which will soon be found on the moon with all of the new locations) has cheap canvas that works great!! That was my go to canvas for a year.

      Thanks for coming out of your shell and commenting 💪 - My Dollar General only has cheap paint BUT I will look harder next time I go. Walmart will sometimes have cheap canvases too ( but then that means you have to go to Walmart 😝) and no-body wants that!

    I began painting the Bob Ross wet on wet , and used only Ross or Windsor newton..however I began painting with acrylics, which takes a little getting used to , but I prefer acrylics now. I have ,however , NEVER had good experiences with Artist loft products,except for their brushes. I use mostly GOLDEN products now..which I have found to be superior. I recently got a set of the water mixable oils, so I will be venturing back to oils again soon

I also use a 3/4 and 1/4 flat that works really well as they are soft and allow for paint to be layered easily. Just wanted to comment about it for folks that have been at it awhile. @WildCreates  3 роки тому

      Glad to to help.
      When I first started to paint on the cheap I used Chip brushes... They work but they are not the best (kinda hard to use for finer detail). If you like painting and enjoy it, I think its best to invest in some brushes (just my personal opinion though)
      Chip brushes are great for tasks like adding gesso or Liquid White to your canvas. I use them all the time for that.

    • @WildCreates
      @WildCreates  4 роки тому

      The only nit-pick thing is: the colors are not as rich and you have to talk extra care of your brushes. Cause the water will make the hair brittle fast if you don’t condition them.

      If you are looking to struggle with splash colors and smelling intense vapors... then you got the right kit ha ha ha.
      I understand that $80 plus bucks is a lot. But when it comes to BR painting... there is an investment cost. Yes for under $25, I too can get a few supplies and start painting BUT that is just basic painting. If you want to paint like BR then I recommend getting decent supplies.
      But I will be interested in how your painting adventure goes. I hope you dominate it 💪

      @Wild Creates you are right about the vapors haha... I have a small 1 bedroom apartment... I had to put the oils away until summer. I'll try again then... I am getting better with the acrylics in the mean time tho.. my job is somewhat seasonal and this is the slow time, so I have extra time, but no extra cash... so it is what it is for now.. maybe come summer I can get some better supplies for next winter when I'll have time again.

      I forget which video I show this in BUT you can minimize vapors escaping by rubber-banding a towel ontop of your cleaning bucket. Pull the towel back when you need to clean then cover when done. Its stupid BUT it works.

    Hi Wild, thanks for the information. I try the Bob Ross 1inch brush, the bristle go terrible everytime after I clean with paint thinner. The top of the hair not fluffy. I heard some one said that the quality of Bob Ross brushes go down recently. Do you have other brand of brushes to recommend? Such as alexander brand? Thank you

    • @WildCreates
      @WildCreates  4 роки тому

      It could be that you are just not cleaning the brush thoroughly and paint and thinner is still in the bristles. I remember hear that the BR company wasn’t happy with their paint products a few years ago. Which is why they switched manufacturers. But that was just for the paints.

      You can use any oil medium with water mixable oil paints. BUT if those mediums are not water mixable themselves your paints will convert back to normal oil paint... requiring you to clean them up with mineral spirits like odorless thinner.

    I use Artisan Winsor Newton for Bob Ross Style. I have tried the natural bristle brushes by Bob Ross. First time using them they swelled up and bristles splayed on the outside. I have tried them twice now. I don't soak them and when washing them I dry them right away. I can't get natural bristle brushes to work with water mixable oil paints. Ruined after one use. Any suggestions?

    • @WildCreates
      @WildCreates  4 роки тому

      This is happening because of the water when you clean. Natural brushes are just like your hair on your head. When water gets on it and air dries it will get frizzy, brittle and flare out. Learn to shape your brush when you load it with paint and this will help.
      Also look into getting 1 or both of these products. They will help with maintaining and shaping your brush. ( ua-cam.com/video/gDaoXPk-nWQ/v-deo.html ) or ( ua-cam.com/video/X-aG6dfSYVI/v-deo.html )
