Hi Claire! This is something I often think about myself. Will Black Opium achieve the same iconic status as Poison or Opium in 30 years? I tend to think not, but who really knows? It’s been performing very well for almost ten years. If people continue to buy it for another 20, it could become a classic. On the other hand, the market is just so oversaturated, too many new releases, so there’s no time for something to even become iconic. Perfumes are no longer planned, released, and marketed like they were in the 90s. New releases come and go.
@@lukeparfums I smelt it on Saturday. It's like they've gone back and paid homage to cherie and to the 2012 version to me. I didn't love it but it was fine.
These are definitely worth mentioning. I didn’t remember that I own Jovan Musk as well. I would have have included it. I also have a very old (possibly expired) bottle of Charlie. Thanks for watching!🙂
@@lukeparfums Us perfume lovers are interested in everything that’s perfume related. And thank you for making this interesting and very enjoyable video 😊
My mom had Youth Dew & Halston, but didn’t really go out much - so didn’t wear them often that I can remember. I think I used to wear Revlon’s Jontue, and I KNOW I wore Cacharel’s Anais Anais …you’ve jogged the archives of my perfume memories!
I blind bought Shalimar because it kept getting mentioned in movies my film group watched, but I HATED it at first, because my usual go-tos are fresh florals, and Shalimar is more like "dirty" vanilla, for lack of a better description. Then, so it wouldn't go to waste, I kept wearing it at home (because I was too self-conscious to wear it out), and it became very comforting to me over time. Last night I went to a speakeasy and decided to be brave and on-theme and put on Shalimar, and I got complimented on it! I felt so fancy saying "It's Shalimar!"
I love this! Shalimar is definitely a dirty vanilla, you’re exactly right. It’s definitely the sort of fragrance that grows on you. Thanks for watching!🙂
Hi Luke.....better late than never....😁😁😁 Since I wasn't born until until 1949, I can't have much to sayabout prior decades. Except for Shalimar, of course. I adore Shalimar! It just happened to be born 28 years before I was!🤣 I've always loved the smell of Old Spice. I had no idea it was that old! My 60s fragrances were Ambush and Emeraude! Not expensive....but I was a teenager!😂 I can't believe that I didn't try Cinnabar and Rem Patchouli until 50 years after they were created!😮
Hi Leah, how are you doing? Shalimar is such a classic, isn't it? I really want to get a small bottle. It's also quite affordable online. Old Spice smells amazing, I find it very comforting for some reason. It's slightly green, herbaceous, mossy... I'm not familiar with Ambush. It's never too late to discover some amazing new fragrances. :)
What an amazing video💖💖💖 You made me realise i own perfumes from all the decades you mentioned! I own ofcourse the love of my life Chanel No5, Shalimar, Joy Jean Patou, Rochas Femme, Youth Dew, Cabochard, Dior Sauvage ( for the bottle, dont really care about the scent), Patchouli, Rive Gauche, Opium, First, Cristalle, Jean Louis Scherrer. I cant wait for part 2, you know how much i adore the 90's, i probably will be all over the comments 😂😂😂😂😂
Thank you!🙂 What a great list. I really need to get myself a bottle of Shalimar and retry Cristalle. I’m missing Shalimar in my collection. Do you have the edp or the edt? Part 2 will be out soon. I wanted to do it all in one video but it would be an hour long so I decided to split it. Thanks for tuning in!🙂
@@lukeparfums I have Shalimar EdP. If you find an old bottle of Cristalle for a good price do it but the new formulation is expensive and performes like a body mist so save your money for something better please 💖 I think i'm going to use my opened bottle sparingly and leave my back up bottle sealed for my childeren 😂
Thanks for informing me. I love that you’re preserving your backup for future generations. I suspected nothing great would come out of that reformulation... My local department store has been remodelled and they don’t carry Chanel anymore so I’ll try the new Cristalle when I get the chance to, just out of curiosity. From memory, I loved the EdP in the Coco edt style rectangular bottle. It was potent. I’ve been scouring second-hand websites and nothing yet… I usually find incredible things for a steal when I least expect it. I scored a bottle of Miss Dior Cherie for £30 a few years ago. Let’s hope Cristalle pops up too.
I sooo appreciate that you can pronounce French names ccorrectly! Bravo! It irks me when these perfume review girlies butcher famous perfume houses and names. Plus: the video is really interesting and informative.❤❤
Growing up in the '70s, the scent I remember best was Charlie - everyone wore it! There was also the "Old Lady's" scent, White Shoulders, and Emeraud. Considering my socio-economic status at the time, they were probably "drug store" brands, so that may be why you didn't mention them. I have no idea if any of them are still around.
Hi there. Thanks for reminding me of classic drugstore scents. I’m familiar with quite a few. Many of them are still available. I really should have mentioned some that I have in the video. I have a very old expired bottle of Charlie, and the oil version of Jovan Musk. Revlon, Coty, and Dana had great affordable fragrances. I haven’t smelt White Shoulders. Thanks for watching!
Some of my favourite fragrances from these eras not mentioned here are - Lanvin Arpege (1927), Elizabeth Arden Blue Grass (1936), Rochas Madame Rochas (1960) and Revlon Charlie/Charlie Blue (1973).

Lovely video, Luke! For newbies watching this, it may be helpful to note that Roudnitska’s Eau Sauvage for Dior bears no relation to the modern “Sauvage.” Dior and Guerlain have a habit of reusing names for completely different compositions 😅
Hi there. You’re exactly right. I should have made it clearer. Eau Sauvage has nothing to do with contemporary Sauvage. The same goes for Miss Dior from 1947. Thanks for watching!🙂

I love rose, vanilla, oriental , spicy notes .... ❤ Amy USA
Hi Amy! Thank you for the lovely comment. I’m glad you’ve been enjoying my videos. Before starting a collection, I'd suggest getting lots of samples or testing in store. However, based on what you like, here are some recommendations: Rose: Love Chopard Vanilla: Dior Hypnotic Poison, Lalique le Parfum, Alyssa Ashley Vanilla Oriental/Spicy: Estée Lauder Youth Dew P.S. I also have separate videos specifically about vanilla fragrances and spicy orientals.
New sub here. I’m so happy to have found your channel. I loved this video! I wore White Linen back in the day. It was my signature for a few years. Hello and thank you for subscribing. White Linen was indeed considered light and demure as opposed to the powerhouse orientals of the time. Shalimar is gorgeous too. Thanks for watching!🙂
Please recommend me some more perfumes from the early 40s! The perfumes you mentioned I have already used and I have a desire for more wonderful fragrances ❤️ So if you could get me into the world of the early '40s? 😁🌹
