Yes, you get it, my friend. It's obvious that you can feel it. For me, the album called Breakfast In America is one of those essentials, one of those 25 or so albums that I've always insisted on having with me, wherever I've gone and whatever else I've had in my music library.
The “Lady” is Libby. She is the Statue of Liberty with NYC in the background which is made of kitchen stuff. Added bonus, you’re looking out an airplane window.
In 1979, I remember "Get the Knack," (by the Knack), ELO's "Discovery," the Eagles "The Long Run," the Cars "Candy-O," Cheap Trick's "Dream Police," Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers "Damn the Torpedoes," and the Dead Kennedys' "Fresh Fruit from Rotting Vegetables" all making a huge impact. Though 1979 isn't my favorite year for music (it's 1967 for me), there was a lot of good stuff happening. In 1979, disco was coming to an end, the 70s blues-based hard rock was collapsing (be it band in-fighting, drugs, or a general lack of creativity), and the emergence of outlaw country and new wave breaking into the Top 40... the music scene was not really grounded in one or two (or even three or four) styles. It was an interesting time, for sure.
The album's last song "Child Of Vision" is my personal favorite (if I'm forced to pick just one). Like the song "Crime of the Century", they show us how you close out an album. Only this time it's a full tilt jam. That's why I love these guys. They can do any style of music and make it their own. Expect the unexpected.
Listen to "Goodbye Stranger" following along with the lyrics. It paints a different picture. You can see him on his journey. Seriously,...it'll trip you out.
Supertramp is such an underrated band. Probably in my Top 10 ever. Goodbye Stranger has to be the most saddest / uplifting song ever depending on yr position of perception
Hey Lee, there is a fantastic version of this song done by Roger Hodgson, when he was playing with Ringo’s All Star Band. You can look it up on UA-cam, Ringo, and Sheila E. are playing drums together, Roger Hodgson on piano and vocals, Greg Lake from Emerson, Lake and Palmer on Bass and the rest of the band are all star performers, it’s a knock out!
Enjoyed the review! The band was so versatile, each band member brings so much, and to have two incredible singer/songwriter/piano playing band leaders was simply amazing. Lots of great songs in Breakfast In America but I love the first song, Gone Hollywood.
Hard to pick a favorite off the album. It changes over the many years. The outro on Goodbye Stranger is an eargasm. Both of these are classics. Gone Hollywood is an underrated great one too
Of course I didn't see it that way when I was in high school, but in a strange way, the lady on the front of the album as you say, really strikes me as somebody I'd really like to go out and have a beer with. The bass guitar work on both of these is just immaculate. Both of those songs are gems for sure.
I love this album, L33, and The Logical Song in particular; but, IMO, "Child of Vision" is the best track on Breakfast In America and the most Proggy. I'm really looking forward to you reacting to that great song. It's kinda funky. ❤☺✌
We were utterly spoiled in Britain from the early 60’s to at least ‘89. I was 16 in 1970,saw Hendrix that year. Also Led Zeppelin in the same year, back when tickets were affordable. We took full advantage as in London back then, every night of the year there was a major band playing somewhere in the city, jump on the tube and go. Saw every legendary British band (and there were LOADS of them) except the Beatles. My record collection was massive, just like everyone else. Supertramp were one of those many British bands that were a part of boomers DNA. We had it best, sorry you missed the legendary gigs and parties. But hey, thank fuck for UA-cam eh? Keep up the good work young fella.
I'm 62 even my parents loved Supertramp , My mother taught piano and my father played the saxophone and harmonica that would explain why they loved them !
I have been fortunate enough to have seen Supertramp “The Tramp” Live 4 times. Their live shows are a spectacle and brilliant. Each member is a musical genius. Rick Davies is my favorite keyboards player and John Helliwell is favorite Sax player. He is a blast to watch live. The bass and drummer are awesome and Roger’s guitars are superb. The only live show I put above Supertramp is Pink Floyd, who I have seen 4 times.
When I was 21, I drove across country with a friend on 3 days noticed. I lived on Eastern Long Island. Long drive to CA. Quit my job, sold my car and left. 2 week visit turned into a year. This album came out when I was there. Jaw dropping album! I would drive around in my 280Z cranking it!! It's so hard to choose one ❤
About 2 years ago, I looked up a bit of the history of 'Supertramp' on UA-cam.....& found a short documentary. Nearly an hour into their history....it suddenly turned into a straight-up live concert. I can't remember the title, but I think it was from 1979. They played a lot of 'Crimes of The Century' plus the stuff from 'Breakfast in America'. Very entertaining.
In concert, they sounded like their album songs, really clean and crisp. It wasn't until I got home that I realized I went deaf. 🤣 Anyone else take Crime of the Century into audio stores to 'test' the speakers?
This eight-track saved my sanity. A romote cabin, no tv, no radio and twelve family members. But for an all in one eight track player with this wonderful album left behind by previous tenets.
I was at school with Dougie Thompson and he was all about the music back then so no surprise that after a long apprenticeship with various bands in Glasgow and London he wound up finding success in Supertramp . Good on ye Dougie
I can’t break it up I love the album. I snuck out to go to see them at 14 had to run to catch the last train & missed the last bus.Took a long walk home . Forgot how long I was grounded but it was so worth it 😂☮️
You said the end of long way home was a longing. You were right - he longed for a different existence to come home to, that's why he's taking the long way home. He's longing for a better relationship where he's valued.
Simply the best album of that year. Punk was making a lot of noise, and out comes this super slick exercise in musicianship and studio magic. I think the title comes from the last line of a sci-fi story. 'He took the long way home - around the world.'
You talked about the sadness at the end of TTLWH. I've always felt it too. But the nice thing about an album is the order in which the songs are placed, Following TTLWH on the album is the song Lord Is it mine. I need both back to back so the sadness becomes spiritual. Pax.
Yeah, Carry On My Wayward Son is considered the unofficial theme song for Supernatural. You've already fine my favorite Supertramp song, Even in the Quietest Moments.
Great songs, love this album. Yeah I like Take the Long Way Home best of the two. My favorite, like you, is The Logical Song. Notice how the album cover is a stylized view of New York out of a plane window, complete with the waitress lady as the Statue of Liberty.
There was a TV movie many years ago where a teen son being treated for leukemia and his mom was driving him home from his treatments and they popped this song into the cassette player in the car and sang along to it as a way to connect and help him forget about the disease for a while. I believe it was from the Book Eric by Doris Lund. Take the Long way home always reminds me of this story.
I think this is the only sax vs harp battle I've heard in a song...great offset! Goodbye Stranger is probably my favorite by SuperTramp, but several others vie for the honor. Take The Long Way Home is possibly second. I only really like about ten songs by them, most others leave me flat, but the ones I like I REALLY LOVE. And the lyrics often have meaning and bring back memories, always a plus!
I usually prefer my rock a bit on the heavier, guitar driven side but Supertramp is such a good band. Breakfast in America in particular is a great album.
“Child of Vision” biggest killer on this 10 star album
Great album. My favorite from this album is Child of Vision
Another man’s women,live in London 1977 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Child of Vision and Gone Hollywood are my favorite tracks from this album. I like Crime and Crisis more. This album is a bit poppier.
You still have to explore the other great album by Supertramp......Crisis What Crisis?
Love Supertramp, and yes, Logical song is my favorite too! And yes, love Hodgson 's voice! 😊
Can’t wait til you get to “Child of Vision”, the real hidden gem on this album, epic IMO.
soon enough! :D
Yes, you get it, my friend. It's obvious that you can feel it. For me, the album called Breakfast In America is one of those essentials, one of those 25 or so albums that I've always insisted on having with me, wherever I've gone and whatever else I've had in my music library.

I never noticed the airplane bit until now, thanks!
Child of vision is my favorite song from the album and Supertramp all
1979 was an epic year for music, with Supertramp at the top of there game.
In 1979, I remember "Get the Knack," (by the Knack), ELO's "Discovery," the Eagles "The Long Run," the Cars "Candy-O," Cheap Trick's "Dream Police," Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers "Damn the Torpedoes," and the Dead Kennedys' "Fresh Fruit from Rotting Vegetables" all making a huge impact. really underappreciated line in that song-
"so you feel your life has become a catastrophe -it has to be-for you to grow, boy "
So, so true. I guess that matches up with what I say in the end :)
Goodbye Stranger is an amazing song...a classic.
Nervous Wreck and Child of Vision - my faves on this LP.
My favorite song on this album is ... THE ALBUM!!.. 😅✌
Goodbye Stranger is my favourite from this album.
That outtros is fucking mental, always chills down my back with that outtro.
Every song on this album is SUPURB! Can’t wait for you to do this one so HURRY UUUP!!! 🤘😎🤘
Listen to "Goodbye Stranger" following along with the lyrics. It paints a different picture. You can see him on his journey.
Seriously,...it'll trip you out.
Speaking of outro’s, just wait until you ride the keys out on Child of Vision!
Don't forget the 1st song Gone Hollywood. Overlooked banger
In goodbye stranger he's a love em and leave em kind of guy, saying goodbye to all his one night stands as he goes to play in another city
Supertramp is such an underrated band. Probably in my Top 10 ever. Goodbye Stranger has to be the most saddest / uplifting song ever depending on yr position of perception

Take The Long Way Home is definitely my favorite. Beautiful and wistful.
Enjoyed the review! The band was so versatile, each band member brings so much, and to have two incredible singer/songwriter/piano playing band leaders was simply amazing. Lots of great songs in Breakfast In America but I love the first song, Gone Hollywood.
That outro in Goodbye Stranger drives me wild every time!
Hard to pick a favorite off the album. It changes over the many years. The outro on Goodbye Stranger is an eargasm. Both of these are classics. Gone Hollywood is an underrated great one too
dude you are so right! that outro was so good.

Great choice mate, I agree. The Logical Song and Take The Long Way Home are the best songs.
Best song on BIA is " Child Of Vision "...might be Roger Hodgson's best composition
I'm 62 even my parents loved Supertramp , My mother taught piano and my father played the saxophone and harmonica that would explain why they loved them !

Love love Supertramp for so many years never stopped listenning to their albums😊
That bass, Dougie🏴❤
My favorite song is Child of Vision. It’s a deep cut.
i'm gonna be doing the whole album probably! can't wait to hear it!
If you loved the keys on this, Child of Vision will blow your mind!
Best song about one night stands! Life on the road. Goodbye Mary, Goodbye Jane......
This was the first album I ever bought with my own money, from my first job. I still love it.
One of the best outros in rock!
When I was 21, I drove across country with a friend on 3 days noticed. I lived on Eastern Long Island. Long drive to CA. Quit my job, sold my car and left. 2 week visit turned into a year. I have never played just one track from this album. I have to listen to the entire album. Been listening to it for over 40 yrs.
I love how the drums just build, and build, ever so incrementally, just creating that tension that finally erupts into the finale.. so good.
These songs, this album 💋
Amazing what you can get out of one note when you're good.

Yes L33 we’re all a little mad. Kind of have to be with the shit storm around us, but the music is the eye of the hurricane. Keep on rocking buddy.
CHILD OF VISION...la mia preferita 🔝
In concert, they sounded like their album songs, really clean and crisp. It wasn't until I got home that I realized I went deaf. 🤣
Anyone else take Crime of the Century into audio stores to 'test' the speakers?
Fav on this album - Logical Song. Fav album - Crime of the Century. Love Roger's voice so much.
The lady on the cover is the Statue of Liberty...Libby. Lower Manhattan in the background, seen through an airplane window
MONSTER album from Supertramp.
It sure brings back carefree memories when I hear these songs, or shall I say a simpler time?
Sooner or later on something never change album with head phone ❤❤❤❤❤

This whole album is great.
This eight-track saved my sanity. A romote cabin, no tv, no radio and twelve family members. But for an all in one eight track player with this wonderful album left behind by previous tenets.

could should would be a hit today
I love this Album! Loved your reaction, and comments. I enjoy how you share your testimony of your life experience. 🙂👍
You said the end of long way home was a longing. You were right - he longed for a different existence to come home to, that's why he's taking the long way home. He's longing for a better relationship where he's valued.
Shit. Maybe that’s what it hit close to home. I can relate
This album and even in the quietest moments are two favors for me
me too! crime of the century is amazing too (so far but im guessing that wont change) and i can't wait to finish both this and that album.
My favorites too!
You should do some of the Paris concert videos 🔥❤️
Roger is still performing. I saw him a few years ago in Vancouver.
Simply the best album of that year. Punk was making a lot of noise, and out comes this super slick exercise in musicianship and studio magic. I think the title comes from the last line of a sci-fi story. 'He took the long way home - around the world.'
Great songs and reaction

Such an amazing album.
Yeah, Carry On My Wayward Son is considered the unofficial theme song for Supernatural.
You've already fine my favorite Supertramp song, Even in the Quietest Moments.
Great song. Can’t help but relate it to an all-time tv show. This song was played in the opening of the TV movie “Still The Beaver”.
Great songs, love this album. Yeah I like Take the Long Way Home best of the two. My favorite, like you, is The Logical Song. Notice how the album cover is a stylized view of New York out of a plane window, complete with the waitress lady as the Statue of Liberty.
This is a phenomenal album! What is supergroup!
If you didn’t like “Breakfast In America” you are hereby sentenced to Brunch for life.
lol!
Great choices 🤗🎶🎶🎵🎶👍

Ah such fond memories of SuperduperTramp!
Wonderful world this music
it really is a wonderful world. i love it.
Yes...sometimes, lots of time, l don't want to come back from that world. Like that you acknowledge the musicians.
It was a great time to be alive
Two classics!
Need to watch these guys perform live, awesome stuff.
Supertramp, Dire Straits and The Police saved us from Disco.
Ugh.....The Police sucked.
