Matt, back in the 70s we made "portals" on the cheap. However we didn't call them portals. I had a fiberglass dune buggy on a shortened 61 Beetle frame with a 65 "pancake" or Squareback engine, and a Beetle transmission (4.12:1 ring & pinion), and the axle shafts off of a VW van. The van axles had offset reduction gear boxes on the ends which gave me an extra 1.39:1 reduction in my final drive ratio, plus got an extra 4" of lift, because we oriented the gear boxes vertically. Manx used to make a kit to do this, but we just made our own. So for me, a "portal" is just a rebranding of a concept that has been around for a long time.

Great comparison. 74Weld may need to send you $$. That said I know you are impartial. Also, just now noticed the nod to KnightRider with the oscillating red light on the morvair grill! Very cool.
I'm a Ford guy all day long, but Matt and Paul are building serious offroad vehicles that will compete with anything out there. The fact that the Bronco looks about equal is saying something for sure!
I like the portal axle concept for the Bronco. If you wanted to pull the track in a bit could it be done with different offset wheels. What are you running for tires? 37s?
I’m 40, grew up on a cattle/horse ranch but also had wheat harvest every year…and long story short have driven everything….semis, 4x4’s horses, trucks and trailer and tractors galore, combines and swathers, and every kind of car/trucks, lawnmowers, etc. - - - MY POINT is that this family - Matt and crew are Expert level driving insane terrain and I am jealous I have NOT had this experience. And they’re all funny as hell so it may be the best channel on YT. - God bless!
The portals were an awesome improvement to equal the playing field with the Morrvair, but the increased width now fully solidifies the Banana's lead as best rock crawler.
It's funny how in the 1/10th scale RC rock crawling world there are portal-equipped ready-to-run vehicles available, and also aftermarket offset wheels that tuck the track width back under the fenders. Much less expensive than the 1:1 vehicles and their parts!
Awesome upgrade and comparison. Well done team! Now, I know it' a regional thing, but the use of 'drug' instead of 'drag' just grates for the rest of the English speaking world. BUT you keep on being you! Love you guy!
Some very expensive looking bolt on portals so happy you guys are able to afford all this amazing stuff much love and respect don’t forget to build or buy a land anchor ⚓️ :)
Jefe's portals made a world of difference in the Bronco and of course the MORRVAIR worked on the rocks as usual. This is one amazing build that Matt did and the Banana is now very capable too with its upgrades. Good video!
We put 40K on a set last year. Straight cut gears are super efficient and roll instead of slide like a ring and pinion. Road use is no problem...put miles on them!
Every VW Van that you see has them, but only one pair in the rear. Reduction gearboxes on the end of the axle on VW vans began in 1950, and went on until the replaced the VW Type 2 van with the Vanagon. So believe me, they can be very durable.
Love the "Portals", but had to give an extra point to Kaulin for "I will wreck this thing before I ask for a spotter !". Spoken like almost every Son driving his parents vehicle.Well said. The 1 spot was just because it was new to him, but the overall "Improvement to skills" goes to Jefe. while the "Best New Driver" Has to go to Kaulin. Thank Goodness there was no last,"Hey Guys, Watch This" situation. ;)
After Matt mentioned evening gowns, I was waiting for the swimsuit competition. 😂 Too cold? 🥶 Speaking of beauty contests, please PAINT or powdercoat the bumpers on the Bronco! Rust on it just doesn't look right. Yeah, those portals are impressive... although the price tag is pretty steep. When trying to squeeze the Bronco through some tight spots, I was wondering if it might be possible to fit some wheels that aren't quite as deeply dished to narrow the track a couple inches. Of course, turning limits and inboard clearances might become an issue and a narrower track would probably be a bit of a trade off for stability.
I get that IFS rides smoother than solid axles. But I will keep my straight axles for rock crawling. The Bronco looks awesome with those portals and how wide it is. I remember when I tons swapped my Jeep with full width axles, I had to learn how to wheel my rig to get used to that extra width. Man, I gotta get to Sand Hallow one day. It looks fun.
Considering you can build 40 spline shaved 14 bolts front and rear with air lockers and RCV’s for less than those portals cost they are hard to justify..but the fact that it makes a stock rig very capable is very interesting. I’ve also read that the gear reduction of the portals almost eliminates cv breakage but I’m betting the weak steering system of Broncos is gonna pay the price.
I would love to learn more about the tires you choose for off road. How difficult are they to install? What kind of tire machine do you use for them? I used to have an old 1970s machine for truck tires.
It all depends on what you want to spend. (I know some golfers who've spent almost $1k on a single golf club). Getting complimentary equipment does skew the reality for most. Oh well. My takeaway is its inspiring to witness the transformations. Good job!
I like the portal idea of lifting the vehicle. Not only does it raise the body, it lifts the differentials too. That is a big improvement in clearance.
I was about to write about how he wants the Bronco to be perfect...but has those. I was going to recommend having them blasted and powder coated over at Robby's place.
Did get to see much of the inside of those wheels.. would a new wheel with a different offset help the bronco not be so wide? Not sure if there was room to inset
@@3.0colorado21 Which is why he mentioned wanting to build something for it. He knows what these machines can do and what they can't. Baja is a monster challenge and it takes a special kind of machine and person to go the full 1000.
I've been wanting portals since 74Weld announced them for the Bronco. $20k is pretty steep, and I'm curious to see how Jefe's do as a daily driver. Maybe in a year or two. Morrvair, always a beast. We all know that. ❤
At first I'm like, oh man, a staged contest? Then I watched the video and I learned so much about rock crawling and slip differentials and suspension parts. MORR never fails to be entertaining and I learned stuff too!
You should do the norra Mexican 1000 instead of the Baja! It's for vintage rigs and trophy trucks you'd fit right in with the lifted porches! Also it's a point to point race instead of nonstop so you get to stop and visit the towns more instead of blowing through them so more like a race vacation!!! Lots of fun would recommend
This was a great video. I am very impressed with the Bronco for many reasons, I feel it is a very capable vehicle any layman like myself can buy and use for off-road driving with ease. Don't get me wrong, I love the Morrvair, but I will never get to build or afford to have it built for me. Thanks Matt, Jefe and crew for this.
Amazing improvement. I am however curious if the Bronco will still climb that long sand hill from the river. That lower gearing might slow him enough to cause issues. How about another sand hill shootout.

@@Posting-Maharashtra I'll say this around here a lot of guys drag race and had to start modifying their own chassis to stay competitive. So far none of the guys I know with good chassis and working cars or off road rigs were engineers. Gives me hope lol
@@tosgemI disagree, for rock crawling in some situations maybe but the morvair is insane in its element. The bronco could never ever do what the morvair can do In certain situations and the morvair is only slightly behind in others. For me I’d take the morvair purely because it would fit better for the things I do over the bronco
I could,ve sworn this whole time that the Morrvair had lockers front and back!!! That thing is awesome!!! I wasn't subscribed when you guys built it, I'm goinna go back and look for the "Morrvair build videos" I sure hope they're there!!! The Bronco assesment Matt gave is on point. This Bronco has gotten the best upgrade it could have, but at what price? That's the question. Great video!!!
Great comparison. 74Weld may need to send you $$. That said I know you are impartial. Also, just now noticed the nod to KnightRider with the oscillating red light on the morvair grill! Very cool.
Please put "I will wreck this thing before I ask for a spotter" on your recovery shirts 🙏🙌 that would be awesome
"That Bronco is making Jeep noises." 😂😂😁😁🤘🤘
Love to see how happy Jefe is with his new gear.
" I will wreck this thing before I ask for a spotter" had me rolling.
Kaulin is great driver! Very impressive for having little seat time in the rig and never running that trail!
The portals were an awesome improvement to equal the playing field with the Morrvair, but the increased width now fully solidifies the Banana's lead as best rock crawler.
Could a different offset rim help the issue
@@gerarddwyer5112 Was thinking the same thing when I saw the new track width
I thought a different offset on the rims could narrow the width, as well.
It's funny how in the 1/10th scale RC rock crawling world there are portal-equipped ready-to-run vehicles available, and also aftermarket offset wheels that tuck the track width back under the fenders. Much less expensive than the 1:1 vehicles and their parts!
Love the Yukon gearing and posi.. same in my 1998 XJ.. fun to watch you.. thanks for sharing..
Sponsors are awesome
@@Berm_Blaster heck ya they are once you have the. :)
@@Berm_Blaster Except your assumption is wrong...
Jefe's portals made a world of difference in the Bronco and of course the MORRVAIR worked on the rocks as usual. This is one amazing build that Matt did and the Banana is now very capable too with its upgrades. Good video!
Im curious to how the portals will hold up against a ton of highway miles. Id bet they're more for off-road use only
Especially with the gear reduction.
We put 40K on a set last year. Straight cut gears are super efficient and roll instead of slide like a ring and pinion. Road use is no problem...put miles on them!
@@74weld What's the maintainability look like?
Actually, emailed your team instead - looking to get some more info for my own rig. 😉
😂 Too cold? 🥶
Speaking of beauty contests, please PAINT or powdercoat the bumpers on the Bronco!
I can’t wait to throw my ifs in the trash.
A Humvee with portals is a reminder that a Jeep is just a Jeep.
@InsaneBimmer I never ever see HMMWV on any rock crawling trails, so they are just an HMMWV.
Kaulin has been seeming so healthy and spry. We all hope that means his leg is doing fine.
But it also keeps the difference up higher out of the way...not a bad thing
I would love to learn more about the tires you choose for off road. How difficult are they to install? What kind of tire machine do you use for them? I used to have an old 1970s machine for truck tires.
It all depends on what you want to spend. (I know some golfers who've spent almost $1k on a single golf club). Getting complimentary equipment does skew the reality for most. Oh well. My takeaway is its inspiring to witness the transformations. Good job!
I like the portal idea of lifting the vehicle. Not only does it raise the body, it lifts the differentials too. That is a big improvement in clearance.
Is like the diffs on the Mercedes Unimog, allows for a bigger tires and great clearance on the diff itself.
The portals look great but good lord $20k 😳
The rusty bumpers is a great look on the Bronco. 😂
No free spray paint from any sponsors I guess...
I was about to write about how he wants the Bronco to be perfect...but has those. I was going to recommend having them blasted and powder coated over at Robby's place.
im running same lsd rear locked front in my zj and it works great. itll let the rear slip a little bit before it hooks but its never been an issue.
Did get to see much of the inside of those wheels.. would a new wheel with a different offset help the bronco not be so wide? Not sure if there was room to inset
Cant wait to see Matt race Baja with a Corvair or may be King of the Hammers
None of his rigs would make it through either of those races.
@@3.0colorado21 Which is why he mentioned wanting to build something for it. He knows what these machines can do and what they can't. Baja is a monster challenge and it takes a special kind of machine and person to go the full 1000.
Awesome! :D but, about 20 000USD for the portals? :O
I would love to see a price comparison of what all the builds cost between all the rigs.
I just looked up the price for the portals... ouch
I'd bet if you add labor with the Morrvar build, probably about equal
Just amazes me that you use YOUR BEAUTIFUL DYNAMIC OFF ROAD VEHICLES on these lune Tune trails. GREAT JOB!!
23:42 That's a pretty awesome view. Both axles are near full articulation in opposite ways and the body looks perfectly level.
I've been wanting portals since 74Weld announced them for the Bronco.
$20k is pretty steep, and I'm curious to see how Jefe's do as a daily driver.
Maybe in a year or two.
Morrvair, always a beast. We all know that. ❤
$20,000 for those 74Weld portals? Yikes!!
At first I'm like, oh man, a staged contest?
Then I watched the video and I learned so much about rock crawling and slip differentials and suspension parts.
MORR never fails to be entertaining and I learned stuff too!
$20k for portals?! I would have converted to 1 tons and a lift kit for that price and welcomed all of the benefits that come along with them.
Lol, they didnt have to pay 20 thousand.
You're being advertised to. Your views are "being made merchandise of".
Wow, right?
None the less he is right on the money. I'd say at least 80% of us watching this can't afford portals so his way is more relevant.@@dannymccarty344
What would it cost to build that Bronco today, $125k?
20K for wheel spacers
😂
Portals are not wheel spacers 😂😂😂 but yes the price is wild
So we got a call, In todays episode:
Matt builds a concrete snowman,
TomTom revisits his old school,
and Surprise visit from TREVOR!!!
Amazing improvement. I am however curious if the Bronco will still climb that long sand hill from the river. That lower gearing might slow him enough to cause issues.
How about another sand hill shootout.
I’m from New Orleans. My family has vacationed to this area several times. The scenery, the majestic views of nature- OMG!
The Morrvair is the vehicle that won, but Jeffe is the driver that won. With that in mind, I agree that the two teams tied. Great video, guys!
Jefe is my favorite member of this channel, sorry Matt. It was so good just seeing the excitement on his face when the Bronco made it through those obstacles. That thing looks so good now.
Sweet...now wants one for my 79 bronco baby !!!!
What happened to all their Makita gear? Did they make a switch to Milwaukee? I noticed everything is changed to Milwaukee now.
Looks like this channel is now also my "Go To" channel for extreme Bronco Gen6 off-roading! Great build Jefe!
