  • Cleaning up the almost brand new M48 Mauser rifle from Aim Surplus.Scrubbing Bubbles is a great, cheap, and non-hazardous way of cleaning old firearms. This method removes 99% of all cosmoline off of the metal parts.

This appears to be a Yugoslavian M48 Mauser. I recently refinished the stock on mine, and in that process, found cosmoline in tight areas. I would also suggest getting a pin punch set, and removing the trigger assembly also. My trigger spring was gunk’d up with it.

    Mineral Spirits works great.

+4411825 That's true, this is an alternative that is faster than soaking the parts and doesn't produce any harsh fumes.

I prefer using less toxic and harsh chemicals that don't leave an odor when cleaning inside my house.

First, you MUST remove cosmolene from the bore. Leaving it in the bore offers too much resistance to the bullet and will result in excessive pressures building up.
Second, cosmolene inside the bolt (around the firing pin spring) and inside the trigger assembly will result in a very weak and slow firing pin strike. The round may not even fire.
Third, cosmolene needs to be removed from the chamber as well so that the round will actually chamber when the bolt is closed.

will this also work with getting the cosmo out of the SKS bolt ?

Yes, the scrubbing bubbles will remove most of the cosmoline. Just remember to spray it a few times, letting it sit in between, and then scrubbing with a brush before rising off with hot water.

How did you remove the buttplate?

I unscrewed the two screws that hold it on. Then I tapped the plate off with a flathead on the rim. If you do it carefully enough you can do it without scratching the stock.

The Yugo equipment, knives, have been very hard to clean. They are not covered with cosmoline. It is some type of sticky substance. i soaked a bayonet in gasoline for a week, and I ended up with a knife covered in a wax-like substance, which would not wash off. I suppose I could have tried to melt it off with a match, but I did not want to lose the plastic grips. I ended up doing a lot of wiping. I also used dental tools. Is there a chemical that will dissolve this Yugo preservative? I also encountered a similar substance on a new USA made AKM barrel. It is sticky, not oily.

You could always try to warm the item up either in an oven at a low temperature or with a heat gun and see if it melts off. I'm not sure what that is, I haven't run across it before.
