Easy Cosmoline Removal: Cleaning a Mosin Nagant

- How to clean cosmoline off a Mosin Nagants metal parts, including the barrel. Showing how to clean a Mosin Nagant 91/30 and Mosin Nagant M44 Rifles in 7.62x54r. This easy process can also be used on any surplus rifle or pistol which needs cosmoline removal.

I found chemical resistant, glass fiber reinforced tanks (amzn.to/2BTOPV5), also nesting containers, are the easiest way to contain all of the firearm's parts which need cleaning. They are also referred to as a Nesting Container. Since its chemical resistant and durable, it will provide a lifetime of use for a very reasonable price.
Usually I will use Mineral Spirits (amzn.to/2siWSqg) to soak the firearm's metal parts... But always check a smaller part with finish before soaking all parts in the mineral spirits to ensure that the chemical won't have any negative effects on the finish of the gun.
After soaking for an hour (or as needed), I will rinse each part down with water prior to using a blow dryer to get rid of as much excess water as possible. If needed, I will sometimes put the metal parts on a baking tray to be set in the oven at 175 degrees for around 30 minutes to evaporate the remaining water in spots I can't see. Cosmoline also has a melting point around that temperature, which will allow any cosmoline left behind to drain out. Keep in mind, this part of the process does make a temporary unpleasant smell, which is bearable, but can get you in trouble with the better half :)
Lastly, I will go over each metal piece with a good gun oil or lubricant, like Hoppe's #9 Gun Oil (amzn.to/2BUwQOl).
I will also use basic gun cleaning tools (amzn.to/2FiWsmo) to get rid of any cosmoline or residue left behind.

Did the mineral spirits thing. Left all metal parts in mineral spirits - 3 rounds of 30 minutes per, with a rinse and dry after each soak. Started to put the thing back together and ran into the sticky bolt issue (unloaded). Broke down the bolt and let it sit in boiling water for 15 minutes. The grease that came up in the boiling water was not to be believed...blobs of brown gunk everywhere. Sticky bolt problem seems to be resolved now (we'll see for sure when I fire it). Boil your metal.

That's "cold" cosmoline removal, which you need to use harsh chemicals for.
If you use the hot method, simple water with a few drops of degreaser is good enough. I know that industrially cosmoline is supposed to be removed with a very hot steam gun.
Melting point of cosmoline is 52C/125F, and it turns runny enough to escape all of the crags in a rifle at 115C/239F. Just don't go over 300F or it burns.

Hi there, this video was actually very helpful. I have my M44 in the garage soaking in mineral spirits right now. You said it should be properly rinsed. What should I rinse it with afterwards?
Will start my cleaning on my 2 new 91/30's in a couple weeks. Do you think it's too hot in Las Vegas summer 115 degree summer heat to leave the wood outside?

Thanks for the quick response! I have seen and heard some people say mineral spirits can damage the blueing on the rifle or at the least make it come out with spots. I'm guessing you didn't run into this issue?
Mineral spirits worked good for me. Soaked everything but the barrel. Used Hoppe's #9 with .30 cal / 8 mm brush and Rem Oil. Cosmoline was more on tools than everything else. Barrel definitely needed cleaning though. Used bucket to soak parts, rinsed, baked at 200 degrees for short time then sprayed with Rem Oil. Thanks
I was concerned about that as well and can see it would happen if not properly rinsed afterwards... I didn't find any issues with all of the rifles I have used this process on as of yet.
I got lucky. The M44 that I recently just bought wasn't caked too bad in the cosmo. Nothing on the stock, Just the metal parts. I found that remoil worked pretty well for me. I still have to give the barrel a good cleaning but I need to get a brush and a patch hook that will fit

A wallpaper gluing tray works good, cost next to nothing and is available at Walmart. I had no noticable degradation to the tray while soaking the parts in mineral spirits. It is long enough for a M44 barrelled receiver to sit in there diagonally and all the parts to set in the tray also. I did use PVC pipe for the 91/30. Works good.
I rinsed everything off in the kitchen sink. I used a can of air and a hair blower (high heat) to try and dry the parts as best as possible. I then put everything into the oven at a reasonably low temperature for about an hour to evaporate the rest of the water. Thanks for watching!
Good info. I have done many military firearms myself over the last 40 years. I found that soaking in kerosene works great. It's cheaper and evaporates on its own.
Ive checked out alot of different methods, but think im going with mineral spirits, as opposed to degreasers,car washes, ovens,etc I like your pvc method too, im headed to Home Depot now...... Thanks
I did not mix the mineral spirits with anything and I did perform a bore cleaning after this process was complete.

Good question, I used a hair dryer at full speed to blow dry it thoroughly. I then used a good amount of oil in the rear sights. Not the best way of doing it, but it works if that is all you have :)

I actually used Ana aquarium heater in my tank with dove soap, put hot water in and got to 135 dg F, soaked for 2 hrs, rinse and repeat. Then did the mineral spirit with no heat. As a final cleaner. Then just wiped down as the mineral spirit just Evaps.

Yes, all accessories were coverd as well. the oil can was the most difficult to get clean. i covered all accessories heavy with hoppe's #9 gun lube to protect from corrosion in storage and sealed in a bag. thanks for watching!
how long did you let it sit in the mineral spirits?
Is it better to soak in mineral spirits or in boiling water? I have the PVC pipe like shown in this video but debating pouring boiling water in the pipe or mineral spirits to soak the barrel.

Hey it took 6 hours but the Mosin i did came out great!!! I soaked in the Mineral 3 hours, then hot water on parts, barrel I didnt do water just 105 patches, Yeah I counted) and hoppes 9, Wood I used alot of Dawn and warm water, and Zep Heavy duty Degreaser, didnt hurt finish at all, thanx for all the great tips!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know this a old video, but will comment anyway. I use mineral spirits, kerosene, or automotive parts washer. I find they all work well. The simple green and other water based products just dont clean up as fast.
Were all the accessories coated in Cosmoline too? Did you go over them with a specific type of oil after you removed the cosmoline?

I live in St. George, about an hour and a half from Vegas! You should be fine in our desert temps. Ive heard of people putting stocks in the oven at 200 without problems.
Where were you able to find your Mosin?
In my opinion, boiling water only lasts as long as the water is hot. I prefer mineral spirits over boiling water, but that is just personal preference. thanks for watching!

I have 5 greassey Mosin's to degrease too. The one thing that I would do different is to not rinse these parts in water after their good soak in mineral spirits. I would just wipe them down with rags and then just use gun oil on them. If you do use water, maybe use it as the first step...to use warm water to rinse off most of the grease, then the mineral spirits dip, then the gun oil and reassemble and sling some lead down range.
Si how did you dry the barrel, being so long?
I used a hairdryer and then ran some patches through it with the cleaning rod.
Just got one tonite..... Was all that crap(cosmoline) really necessary?? I think mine has more of that stuff on it than any of the rifles ive seen in the videos... Im gonna be busy tomorrow it seems...lol
I personally wouldn't, just because the solvents get very dirty from the cosmoline... I imagine it wouldn't be too much fun cleaning the tub afterwards.
If you go to Home Depot you can get one of these long skinny totes for a grad total of $8.98. It is called a Pennington Window Box liner fits 36" window box (SKU 2318300010) & you will find this in the garden department outside is where I found it. This is intended as a plastic box liner for window boxes that outside you living room window. However it's quite thick so I think it will work fine for mineral spirits. because it is 36" long it will fit my M44, now 91/30 maybe. this beats PVC pipe.
Go to lss.com, that's LSS.com, lower case, it's a lab safety supply warehouse or graingers they both sell a poly tub that will work just as good as the fibre glass tub, about 23 bucks. The mineral spirits work well too. Thanks bro for the video

What did you use to remove cosmoline from the stock ?
putting the wood in the over at 175 degrees for 30 minutes, and then wiping with mineral spirits worked very well. Otherwise, sitting in the hot sun and wiping away as it bleeds out works ok too (just a bit slower).

I found them at J&G and they were $119.. They have them again last time I looked for $150
yes the cosmoline was completely necessary its was apparently the only efficient preservative they had in bulk for guns i dont think they would have used cosmoline if they had a cleaner/easier stuff to use in bulk -_- it isent that hard to remove anyways the only hard part that i see would be the stock
The stock is the absolute easiest since you just let it bake in the sun. lol
It's neccessary to lubricate your bolt if you want to prevent corrosion. Operation of the rifle has nothing to do with my above comment.
That tub is hard to find, Maybe a garden store sells something that long? Lowes, Home Depot Ace, McLendens, nothing even close to that long, good score
I believe this particular bin came from Brownell's.
cheap plastic window boxes at Lowes are 2 feet long... work well.

I think the brake cleaner would be considered a degreeser, but otherwise I just used Mineral Spirits/Paint Thinner.

russians built them to run dry. Its not necessary to lubricate your bolt. If you makes you feel better, go ahead
ok did the baking in oven do anything to metal parts, what parts did you not put in oven? maybe a hair dryer? My wife will freak if i cook gun parts,
no damage to the metal parts. I pretty much put everything in there except what was wood or plastic - essentially everything I soaked in mineral spirits was ok to put in. I have used a hair dryer before as well... I works ok, but doesn't dry it completely in unseen spots.
Well i didnt bake the parts but came out pretty good with Mineral Spirits, now i cant seem to get trigger in right, next 5 minutes ill have it, thanx for all your videos and help

So I did your cleaning on mosin and followed IraqiVet and another guy about the interruppter and polishing the bolt area and the mosin is like butter!!!!!!!!!!!!
about 45 mins at 250 degrees, but it isn't an exact science :)

I just purchased one and need to clean it so this video was helpful for me. Its almost December here in Michigan so the stock in the sun trick is not going to work for me.
My local gun store just got 2 crates of mosins in with 1920s and 1930s production dates and they're caked in cosmoline
