Own two Stealth Arms, commander size with bushing barrel and one 5 inch bul barrel also have one Staccato. Enjoy shooting all three. The advantage for Staccato is the finish. Grip size and comfort for me is the Platypus. All more accurate I can shoot. The Platypus will hold less than a 3 inch group at 50 yards. Have had mine for about 2 weeks. Because I put effort into customizing it, I oddly feel more connected to it than any of my other firearms, EXCEPT a few rifles I build up from just the receivers.
Fully decked out 5” bull barrel, ambi, full tac dust cover, prickle grip, rmr, magwell, “duel” slide, competition trigger & 2 colors for exactly $2000. AND if you go to the parts page on their website you can buy an additional barrel that they will fit your slide while it’s being built ($260-$380 depending on the finish) which I did, so I could have one crowned barrel and one threaded. So $2,380 total WITH AN EXTRA BARREL.
Grip angle is surprising perfect, dot has been right there since the very first draw, unlike my glocks’ grip angles. More accurate than I am. 500rds so far with ZERO malfunctions. No mounting plate, so my sight is amazingly low in the slide, since it’s cut perfectly to fit rmr. Trigger is PERFECT. Slide is buttery smooth. For a price that feels more like a small prick than a deep cut. It’s a no brainer.

@@D-dogtactical734 I own two Platypuses so I might be a bit bias but as someone who has put my money where my mouth is I haven't had my hands on anything under 3-4k I would trade either one for... Only thing I would consider under 4k is probably a MPA DS9, but you definitely won't catch me running out to trade it for a Stacatto anytime soon... maybe it's just my hands but the Platypus just feels so much better in the hands, and as a personal hater of optic plates I love that I can choose my optics cut (both of mine are RMR cut which actually widens the slide instead of the optic looking stupid being wider than the slide)
If you start talking about a $6k+ Atlas or a Nighthawk, then I'd trade in a heartbeat, sell the $6k gun I traded for, and order another platypus...
I've got to be getting close to 5k rounds through them and they've been darn near flawless and customer support is spectacular for the one user-induced issue I did have making me an entirely new slide for free...

A steel frame and factory comps/ports are on the todo list for Stealth Arms the way it sounds but currently, they're getting just about more orders than they can keep up with (otherwise lead times would be like 8 weeks not 24) so new features aren't really a priority, I'll probably own a 3rd if they come with factory steel frame and factory comp...

It's very lightweight with its aluminum frame and only comes in at about 27-30oz.
I personally think it's too lightweight for USPSA shooting but could be very good for Steel Challenge.

So I own a Staccato P, and of course it's a great gun, I have zero complaints, of all the guns in my collection it's probably the one I was most proud of and it's definitely one of the one's people always wanna see and shoot.. Recently I just got a Platypus and I can honestly say it's just as good as my Staccato.. It shoots just as accurately, it has about the same recoil.. In fact if I close my eyes and shoot them both (I would never do that😂) I can't really tell a difference in how great they feel when shooting..
However the Platypus might actually be better.. And here's why.. The grip feels so much better, it's slimmer and has a better texture, and I actually prefer the grip .. Which is a huge surprise considering I'm not a glock fuckboi and the grip angle has always been something I actually criticized them over.. Its more esthetically pleasing than my Staccato as well.. Being able to customize it was an experience unlike any other gun I've ever bought.. And that absolutely does mean a lot.. People can say it doesn't, but it absolutely does.. When u go buy a car u never say "I don't care what color it is".. But it's more than that, it's being able to choose the options (which I won't go over) that they make available that really put it over the top for me.. And its absolutely a well built gun.. Its not like you're buying a Tisas, which is a decent gun, but not even close to a Staccato, and trying to pretend it is..
And the Glock mag thing does matter.. I have tons of glock mags, because I have several guns that run on them, and Staccato mags are stupidly expensive.. U are already dumping a few stacks into a Staccato, then u have to pay $100 a mag just so u aren't reloading constantly at the range? I can use my 50 round drum on my Platypus.. I don't think u can get one of those for a Staccato 🤷🏻‍♂️..
So if you're a Staccato owner, then u owe it to yourself to buy a Platypus.. U might not want to admit it, but you're going to love the Platypus at least as much.. Unless you're an insufferable fanboy the way Glock fans are when u mention a Sig 😂
Edit* So far the Platypus seems to be drop safe, whereas the Staccato is NOT 🤷🏻‍♂️

My main thing with the platypus was it only coming in cerakote due to the aluminum frame. Cerakote looks like ass soo fast lol. Glock mags is _kinda_ cool but those are only marginally cheaper than 140mm Atlas mags if you account for basepads. I hear aluminum frames wear out faster too (will get sloppier feeling faster FWIW), but I don't have any experience with that.

The glock mags are a selling point for many because 2011 mags are known to be hit or miss and expensive. Glock mags have a great reputation for reliability and low cost. If you already have good 2011 mags it isn't a big deal. But for someone getting their first 2011 it seems like a cool feature. After all, who doesn't have glock mags?

I haven't seen a lot about them re: holding up long term but the fact that a 1911 with a Glock mag lower even works in the first place feels like a prank. I've played with one a good bit IRL and it feels solid, my only concern long term is the interaction with Glock mag bodies vs. the mag release since I'd imagine a lot of the buyers probably can't get actual 2011 mags in the first place for various reasons

  • @jeffs7066
    @jeffs7066 Місяць тому +2

whats the draw to it? Double stack 1911's are very popular right now. They use glock magazines which lots of folks already have a pile of at home, and you can have it customized as far as appearance goes straight from the factory, so you dont have to buy a stock gun then send it off for weeks at a time to any of the dozens of customizers out there. Plus it can be done for under $2k.
If I didnt already have a staccato with a pile of mags and was looking to purchase a 2011 for the first time, i'd be interested in it.

Gotta have 1 of everything in the collection. That being said, from a COST standpoint alone, IF it works 100% reliably, the glock mag thing matters to most of us because we have a metric shitload of glock mags. Any time we can get into a new gun, much less an entirely new platform and the optics, mags, and possibly holsters we already have can work with it, there is a massive cost savings right there. I dont shoot my 2011 anymore because of cost and maintenance. I dont like cleaning shit between stages, and sometimes not between range trips either. I dont like how much the MBX mags cost and how the mags need to be broke down and cleaned and springs re-stretched between stages. Shooting open doesn't mean that much to me. Literally anything you run in carry optics will run dirty and on junk ammo all summer long and never give you issues...and thats why we run sig, glock, and cz.

The only problem I had with my Gen 5 19 was the mags falling out. I had to replace the mag release and spring. I was going to replace it with an aluminum mag release because I couldn't find an OEM in stock at the time. A 30-year certified Glock tech said that a metal mag release will wear out the mags quickly. (He's probably right). The Platypus uses a metal release. I'm sure it will hold up for the average shooter. If you shoot a lot, it will wear that notch out in the mags.

I don't actually think this is a gun that offers anything unique or particularly appealing to a competitive shooter. Is it neat? Sure. I think this gun is aimed at someone who has a surplus of Glock mags and thinks thats important for a new gun purchase - or someone who is looking to get into their first 2011 and willing to spend a bit more than something like a Prodigy to get a bit better quality. But for someone already shooting a 2011, I don't think this gun makes a lot of sense. If I wanted a 2011 with nonstandard mags, I'd spend a bit more for a Bul Armory and get a gun that is extremely well built and well suited for competition. That also has a finish that will stand up better to constant holstering...

Platypus feels better in the hands, has a better trigger, is probably more reliable (both of mine have been basically flawless... including running $15-19 pmags getting dropped in the sand all day every day and never being cleaned... try to run a Stacatto on a $15 magazine... oh wait you need to spend like $120 on magazines to get your gun to run? tough luck lmao) has a smoother slide... should I go on?

Now if you want to talk steel frames and factory ports/comps then at least Stacatto has the option but the platypus has only been around a couple years and Steel Frames/ports comps are on Stealth Arms radar but currently they're selling guns faster than they can make them so they have no real incentive to add features atm

I think the major thing is the customization. As someone else mentioned the mags are much cheaper. Need a new mag? Spend $20-$40 vs $120.
Another point is the footprint for your red dot is milled directly into the slide allowing your red dot to sit lower into the slide. From what I can tell on Staccato, you have to get a mounting kit which makes me think it’s a plate that goes into the slide and then the red dot goes on top of the plate.
I’ve never gotten to shoot a staccato. I bought a prodigy and the amount of failures drove me mad for how much I spent. So I looked to see what most people said was the most reliable and the platypus came out best on that from what I’ve read. Should you get one? If you want. From what I can tell the staccato is just as good. But in the long run I feel like the difference in price and difference in price of mags make the difference.
