    Thanks to this video I managed to do this on my own Golf 2 GTI,
    Fun thing is I reached out to mechanic shop and asked the price for this job, and they tried to trick me that I needed clutch change, and I told them there is an "maintenance hatch" on 020 trans, but they didnt understand and played the card "we need to leave warranto hence we do the clutch too
    Saved around 900 dollars on this.

      I don't think it's about "tricking" people... some shops are more familiar with "known issues" than other shops.

    Thomas, Jeff in San Diego here. After fixing our ECU issue last August we replaced our clutch (DIY) and all suspension components on our MK3 Cabrio in September (all by the book with Bentley and digital torque wrench). We also replaced the shifter linkage bushings at the same time for preventative maintenance. The car has been working fine (it's been 3500 miles of use) but now suddenly won't go into gear when running. Shifting through gears when off is fine. When the pedal is depressed, the arm movement is excessively high (hits the base of the round nut on casing) so we suspected the Release Arm was cracked like in this video but it is fine! We pulled it out and even checked it over with a magnifying glass. We had also replaced the T-O bearing and rear cap when we did the clutch and there was no excess debris in the end at that time. We are really puzzled since the clutch is new, the T-O bearing is new, and the release arm looks ok with minimal wear. All we can think to do now is replace the push rod with a new and or longer one. Before removing the arm finger, we pressed on the pedal and it looks like the TO is only moving forward maybe 3mm to 5mm at most but there is some push back. ...but again the main 10" arm on the side of the tranny moves higher than normal. It's like the clutch was broken in over the last 3,500 miles to point of possible previous wear on the rod, finger, etc which is causing the pressure plate to not disengage. The clutch cable is also new (self adjust type) which I asked you about a few weeks ago (compared to manual adjust) but it's obviously working since it's moving the arm so high. Is there anything else we should look into? We are totally perplexed.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  6 років тому

      If that 10" arm moves as high as the support for the transmission... something internal is kaput (or the release rod has worn down too much). Try a different release rod.. if that does not solve things, you'll have to pull the transmission to have a look.

    • @oldowl4290
      @oldowl4290 6 років тому

      Thomas EXOVCDS thanks. Based on your input and some added info we found on BrokeVW site we think the rod is shot. We pulled it and the finger last night. The finger socket looks totally fine. Its contact point for the TO looks a little shiny as expected but the curve, viewed from the side looks normal and not overly worn. Pushrod is definitely a little shorter though on the Pressure Plate end so we will keep our fingers crossed. We are also switching to a manual adjust cable. Everyone on VW Vortex says ditch the self adjusting type.

    • @oldowl4290
      @oldowl4290 5 років тому +1

      I wanted to reply to this to let other people know what happened. It turned out that both the old clutch rod and then the new sharper rod we put in (which solved the issue for a few months) were both wearing a hole in the new thrust plate which attaches to the clutch. The rod blew a hole right through the plate!!! I was able to first confirm this by pulling off the end cap on the transmission, removing the clutch rod, and inserting a $20 USB-LED bore-scope camera for my cell phone that I bought off Amazon. The blast hole was obvious. Luckily we were able to get a new Sachs clutch from our supplier and were just within the 6 month warranty by 1 week to return the Valeo clutch pack. Also of luck was the fact that it fully went through at just 2 blocks from our house so I was able to push the car home, but also partially tore the LCL ligament on the side of my leg in the process! I could barely walk for a full month.
      Suffice to say, after redoing the clutch for the second time it's back on the road again and we switched to a manual adjust cable as the last one was a new auto-adjust. Regardless, we are still very perplexed as to what the original cause was. Was it an actual faulty chinesium part and or the auto-adjust cable or both??? In either case I can assume too much pressure was being applied to the thrust plate which caused the blowout. The clutch disc and flywheel both looked fine. While doing the clutch again we also fully rebuilt our ZF steering rack (meaning all internal seals via a $50 Gates kit) We had to reuse the 2 main pinion bearings though because new ones could not be found anywhere on the planet.
      After all this I think I'm done owning VWs. I think the MK3 clutch design is crap. All the pedal pressure being focused into that one small point as well the pedal assembly itself being made entirely of plastic is just bad engineering or is purposefully designed to fail. It's truly been a constant exercise in learning and lots and lots of patience. I do think the ABA 2.0 engine is strong, ...but everything attached to it and within 10 feet of it is not. Having to replace things like the coolant flange every 30k or the ignition switch, window regulators, etc, etc. These cars are for masochists who love to pay mechanics or just love to constantly work on cars themselves.

    can I get a little off topic here and ask some advise from you..... what oil would you recommend for breaking in a flat tappet cam in a sbc engine... I have a few to rebuild but am not familiar with the newer lubricants. they will be a higher performance than stock but not race. higher rate valve springs will likely be installed....but should I break the cam in with weaker springs first ??

    hello, I have a 2004 Audi A4 1.8t. and my car is in limp mode, got a code for (p0716 input turbine speed sensor... now I find out, after 2002 Audi stopped putting them in the conventional place by the axel flange. In some cases, the new lever can break as soon as the pedal is pushed... if you find no other reason for low pedal, you might have to check the lever again. Manual or automatic adjusting cable? At what angle is the release lever sitting when the clutch cable is in place (pull up on the pedal and check the lever)... at what position is the release lever when the pedal stays to the floor? Thomas could you possibly help me? When I go through my gears , it sounds like something is whining kinda like a old ford power steering pump. It only does this when I’m giving it gas. When I take my foot off of the gas it stops. Also on jackstands I can’t replicate the sound. I’ve changed my whole front suspension. I thought it was wheel bearings then axles. Other that really car drives great. I have a mk4 Vw golf 2.0. If you were closer I would definitely bring it to you. Because I’m lost. I like to work on my own cars. But I’m lost on this one . Could be differential noise... the ring gear could be worn on one side, causing the noise to be present when gas is applied and not present when coasting. Remove the drain plug and look at the differential gear teeth through the drain plug hole. Teeth should look shiney on both sides.

      The cable should go on easily when collapsed... when it does not, that means that the clutch is getting to the end of it's life and will probably start to slip soon. The other reason for difficult to attach, is if someone added an extra (or the wrong size) rubber spacer to the cable (at either end). If you have a thick spacer at the transmission end (where the retaining clip attaches), you can install a thinner rubber spacer. The added stress on the cable can cause the cable to snap (at either end), puts too much unnecessary pressure on the release bearing & release plate and can cause premature failure of the little lever that you guys just replaced. Just some things to keep in mind.

      Self adjusting cable or manually adjusting cable (should be self). Try to readjust / reset the cable. It could be that the pedal cluster is cracked... resulting in less clutch / pressure plate activation... causing low clutch grab.

    Hello Thomas, could you help me out with my car which is a Seat from 1996, same VW mechanic components, its a 1.6 1F engine petrol with motronic system. Took it for a mechanic to change timing belt, and the car never came alright, i took it off, ajdusted it right, but the problem persists, not only when i adjust the distributor to the notch, it has slugish acceleration(no power), the car is also stalling, rpm going really low when stopping or pressing the clutch sometimes, been trying to advance the timing by rotating the distributor, it fixes the acceleration problem but i dont know if its the right timing etc, does not fix the rpm stalling though...No vacuum leaks as far as i am aware, my car has no pcv valve i think, no maf sensor aswell. Distributor cap is a bit worn out though, but car didnt have problems before. Thank you very much.

      Camshaft / crankshaft timing could be out... that is why it feels sluggish. Let me check if I can find information on your engine.

      I don't have any information in my service software. Can you send me pictures of your engine so that I can see what it looks like?

      imgur.com/a/qVV4K Thank you for your help, the cam/crank are off by less than half a tooth, no matter how much i play with the tensioner and the belt, or how i ajdust the pulleys, they never line up 100%, it came from the mechanic a few mm worse...When checking transmission tdc (0) and comparing with cam notch, they are now closer than when it came out. Maybe i should try to find vacuum leaks? I tried checking all the hoses , intake, etc. No signal of bad hoses, crack...

    Hey man got some questions for ya again! So here in Alaska it's been -10 out lately an my clutch suddenly wont come back up an when I put it to the ground it stays but isn't engaging the clutch so I can't get it in gear when I did the trans last i put that pilot bearing in an it was very tight fit even with lots of lube should i assume that's the issue an maybe sand it down to make it move a little freely? Thanks again man

    • @wesleyhunter501
      @wesleyhunter501 4 роки тому

      I looked at it an looks like it's been smacking it so hard it made an indent on the pilot bearing.

      Year of car? Self adjusting cable or manual? Is the pedal cluster OK / not cracked? When the pedal does not want to come back up, what's the position of the release lever at the side of the transmission (the one that the cable is attached to). Post a video on your channel or send me picture... contact info is on my site (fkh161 link in the description).

      @@EXOVCDS 98 vw jetta 2.0 GL, self adjusting cable but I put a spacer so that I dont have to fight with the cable not working properly. The release arm is just past 9 when it's not pressed an when it is goes to top but clutch isn't engaging. An the inside lever isn't broken an springs feel okay as well..

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  4 роки тому

      So I don't get confused and so that we are on the same page:
      When the clutch pedal is pressed to the floor... the clutch is supposed to "disengage".
      When the clutch pedal is released... the clutch is supposed to "engage".
      If the release lever (where the cable attaches) position is OK (at rest & when pedal is to the floor) then the problem is with the clutch itself... a collapsed pressure plate that is not releasing the disc correctly / enough.
