Hi everyone! Feel like explaining a bit more why we insulated this way. Also it’s my first renovation so I’m sure we can all learn from it, will probably do it differently next time. Because of the solar brackets and concrete battens a membrane under the tiles would be destroyed over time. The blue styrofoam is basically waterproof and doesn’t breathe a lot, so the idea is to make the space inbetween the insulation airtight for more insulation and let moisture from the inside leave through the windows. Doing and learning. Three to four persons make it easier to install the insulation and vapor barrier. Filling the roof gaps. Smoothing a corner wall. Chopping firewood. Enjoying the balcony.
If Paul is telling you to do the insulation the way that you did it, he’s right and I trust his judgment. All of us need engineers helping us build things! I love your projects and your determination in completing things.😊

Personally I would have tried to use all natural materials, wool for example. I know not so easy, but I’m increasingly aware of how much plastic we use in our lives, it’s not sustainable….

Maya the stone cottage looks really nice. It’s going to be a nice cosy structure. You have learned so much.
The reason the old insulation was up against the roof tiles was to minimize trapped air gaps. Stale air becomes condensation traps. Moisture will build up during the cold months hopefully it will cook out through the hot period and not become moldy

Sometimes it’s not easy to choose ecological materials, mostly not economical yet.
BUT, it’s much better to have good insulation, even if it’s not bio stuff, than not being able to afford any insulation…
You might want to do a walkthrough of the property and talk about your plans for next year? 😊 (I’m sure you shared the plans before and what’s what, but it would be helpful with all the progress you made already)

Membrane goes directly under tiles on top of supports and laps over walls.
Are you saying that the membrane should go n first, and then the two layers of insulation? Makes sense to keep both layers of insulation dry. However, please verify.

WIll you have a wood stove in this space? Always nice to have one installed as early in the process as possible so you can warm up the building.
The foam that you are using as a gap filler and adhesive does not like to be cold. Less than 55F or 13C is not good.
I think your insulation system is just fine. You had many obstacles that you worked around. The roof is now insulated like a thermos bottle.
If you are going to use gypsum board (drywall or plaster board) on the ceiling I suggest you use rolled steel hat channels running the length on the room on 16" channels. The steel hat channels can be shimmed to straighten out any uneven surfaces and placing them on 16 " centers will prevent the gypsum board from sagging.

Good work, should consider putting in floor heating in that space for heating too eh. Doesn't seem like a really big room, would be good to know the dimensions. Also if you have the funds, some drone footage would be nice. Keep up the good work. You can also get a wwoofer to help you in the future if needed.

Hey Just a thought; maybe to Tape the joints instead of foam?
Foam work as glue and makes them practically one big part. Usually its wooden structure, foam block betweem them glued together by canfoam.. Strong and tight.

The membrane has to be glued to the wall and made airtight. Its to prevent warm and humidity rich air to go into the insulation and condensate there.
