    The 7mm PRC is the new kid in town. Loaded with Federals 170 grain Terminal Accent this just might be the one gun, one caliber, one bullet for all North American hunting.

    With this load in my 7prc, I’m getting avg 2981fps (22” barrel) 0.75-0.90” groups @100yds. Load worked fantastic on my black bear this spring. Complete pass thru frontal diagonally across and exited rear (60 yds shot) Bear ran ~ 50 yds before piling up. I’m very impressed with its performance.

    Great shooting given that rickety table! Very interesting to see expansion testing beyond the typical 10-100 yds. That round mushrooms hugely but still holds together under 100 yds. Good to see it still opening up well at 1,000. Should be a perfect bullet at normal 50-600 yds hunting. I never appreciated shots beyond 300 yds until moving to Texas. You can have some wide open spaces with no cover. Anywhere from Texas and Arizona to North Dakota and Montana can be this way. Even Eastern Washington and especially Eastern Oregon. Thanks for a great review.

    I shot two of my 7PRCs yesterday. Stopped by a local store and they had 2 boxes of the Terminal Ascent but I just couldn't bring myself to buy it at $67/box. Especially since I handload. I may reconsider. Going back to the range in a bit to shoot one of them again and that store is on the way
    I also shot the Federal ELDX ammo in both yesterday. One was decent at MOA the other didn't like it at all. I did get lucky with my Tikka 7PRC as it has now shot five 3 shot groups all half MOA with factory Hornady 160 CX Outfitter ammo. Good thing too because i bought 3 cases for a steal on auction
    Those Fed TA are amazing
    Yes please try Berger 180 VLD, Hornady ELDX and Hornady ELDM since I hear a lot that those match grade bullets open fine and work well in hunting. I did kill a deer last season with my 7PRC and ELDM factory ammo

      I will say the Fed Terminal Ascent surprised me. After 15 shots it had a standard deviation of 12 and an extreme spread of 37.7. Average velocity was 3003.2 fps.
      I’ll see how soon I can get back out there to test those other factory loads.

      The hornadys are way outclassed by the terminal ascent. They're usually accurate but blow up on game. They're fragile cup and core bullets vs bonded match ammo in terminal ascent

    • @Accuracy1st
      @Accuracy1st 9 днів тому

      @@daltonv5206 Terminal Ascent most certainly a superior bullet for performance on game but on a deer it doesn't matter. The cheapest cup/core kill deer just fine and a Terminal Ascent is overkill but if it shoots well, I'll use them. I finalized a 200 grain TA in one of my 300WSMs and the 136 grain in one of my 270s.

    With this kind of expansion at 1000, I would be a little concerned at 50-100 being so soft, I have blown up ELDx on water jugs at 100 from a 7rem mag.

    I have seen vid of shooting an elk at 1,376 yards with a 7 RM. That was the Gunwerks video with his son. Aaron over there now wishes they had not taken the shot. His son is always practicing at the 1k yard range and has shot that gun before. He was competent. And they did hike over there to harvest the elk.
    Aaron at Gunwerks points out that the bullet did not perform like he wanted.
    For me, impact velocity is key. You could have a heavy bullet and in the math, it has a lot of energy. But if it does not expand properly, it could pencil through. That being said, the guy at Little Crow prefers monolithic copper, like the CX. Point being that it will normally create an exit wound that helps with deflation of the chest cavity and exsanguination.
    It is also often the case of having to shoot twice or thrice at an animal, regardless of distance. There have been plenty of animals wounded at "ethical" distances of less than 300 yards.
    That being said, my area allows to about 300 yards of sight lines but mule deer in the western part of the state do suggest being able to shoot at least 200 yards. It's a canyon with no trees.

      It has nothing to distance and everything to do with the skill of the shooter and quality of his/her ammunition......I mad many kills from 1100 yard and under but I shoot thousands of round per year in practice I also don't screw with factory ammo.

    • @3RBallistics
      @3RBallistics  5 місяців тому +8

      @@stephenferguson6363 as much as I believe in a shooters skill, at 1100 yards I would think it has more to do with time to target and movement of said target. At 1100 you are talking about 1.5 seconds of flight time on a moving target. That target moving is an uncontrolled variable I wouldn’t take a chance on. Finally, living in the mountains and being out of shape, there’s no way I’d want to pack out game from that far out.
