  • Alive’s super power Td5 Defender 90 has gained another 10Nm torque since our last upload.
    We’ve taken it onto one of Lincolnshires many disused runways to flex its muscles and show how this truck gets up and goes!
    0-60mph in 6.1 seconds
    1/4 Mile in 15.3 seconds at 85.9mph
    All this on diesel pump fuel only…
    Beat that!

      We’ve seen Td5’s with half this power, smoke like that! 😂 We’re currently reworking the turbo (again!) to try to clean this up, so a new video will be along shortly. #staytuned

    I hope the oil pump bolts got plenty of lockthread on! Lol. Just shows how strong the old TD5 is although I’m not sure how long the R380 gearbox will last?

      ⁠​⁠@@al0zzzI’ve had one in my discovery td5 for 22 years which we had from new. It’s got over 200,000 miles on it and it’s never been touched apart from oil changes…the R380 is a great gearbox providing it’s not rushed with changes, especially going into second! As for your bombproof statement.. running one at this power will definitely reduce its life and bombproof they ain’t!

    is this with the darkside turbo? i talked with one of you guys a thu mounts back and you said they were sending you one to try

      It uses their Fabrication Mafia tubular manifold but everything bolted to it is 100% ours, including several revisions of turbo to get it to where it is now, and we’re still not finished! 😁

      We’ve been tuning the M57 in the L322 Range Rover and in BMW models of course, since around 2005, so we’re fairly comfortable with those you might say. 😉

    Interested to know what you;ve done to get this performance? I assume decat, EGR blank, larger intercooler and VNT turbo? Have you had to do much to the drive line? I have loads of play in mine and would worry this torque would strip splines like butter!

      Also i assume this amount of smoke is not a problem at this stage and can be improved (reduced) afterwards with fine tuning?

      We’ve been pushing the limits of the Td5 for a couple of years now, having initially made 252hp. The progression to breaking the 300hp figure has been a long road of testing and development, not to mention extremely expensive, but we did it!
      The excess smoke isn’t at all desirable, although we’ve seen Td5’s with pretty much half this power, smoking as bad if not worse. Obviously not cars tuned by us! 😂 Further turbo revisions are forthcoming as well as some other improvements to help clean it up and maybe make even more power still.
      The whole drivetrain has been massively uprated to handle the monstrous torque this makes, and it’s holding up well so far.

      A D2 is heavier and has different final drive ratios. With the entire drivetrain uprated and the weight stripped out of the car (it’s interior!) then you’d see some incredible acceleration times from a D2. The modifications needed to get to this level of performance is massive and to put it lightly, not at all cheap. Full spec list will be revealed in the near future.

    Could you get even more torque low down if you sacrificed the speed and power? What’s the max torque out of a TD5 that’s realistic?

      This is uncharted territory as nobody before us has ever managed to achieve even close to 600Nm. I think we’ll struggle to achieve anything more than the low end torque we’ve already got, as we’ve been on the very edge of compressor surge even with an extensively reworked top end.
      600Nm from a 2.5 is pretty respectable anyway, and we’re very happy with the way it drives. 🙂

    what sort of power is your stage 3 2.2tdci ?

      We’ve had up to 200hp from the 2.2 TDCi, but let’s keep a sensible hat on here! These engines become rather fragile when operating over about 180hp and so we’ll typically aim for around 170 to 175hp maximum on a 90. A 110 or 130 we’ll take up to around 170hp maximum, due to their extra mass. Vehicle usage needs to be accounted for as well, and that’s a conversation we’d have upon tuning, so we can totally understand how the vehicle is used and also account for any non-standard modifications.

      Yes of course it can, and as a rule for customer vehicles, we don’t do smoke! The 90 here is our development vehicle and what you’re seeing is our first generation of our forthcoming GTB600 conversion. At this present time, we have a turbocharger that’s currently being reworked (again!) to address some issues we identified with this version used here, so hopefully we’ll be able to cancel out at least the vast majority of this smoke with this next revision. We may also see a bit more power too, but no promises just yet! 😂

    Out of curiosity. whats the biggest limiting factor when pumping more power out of a td5? ive never seen any with *big* power before and have always wondered why someone hasnt gone and pulled 500hp or something stupid like that out of one

      The biggest limiting factor is primarily with the design of the Delphi injectors, which only have a very limited capacity.
