I believe, the message of the song speaks about internal struggle of life and regrets. He knows the that at his early age, he is at his comfort zone and feels complete. However, as time goes by, he is getting older without achieving anything in life on what he is dreaming of that's why he is unstable, older and needs something to rely on. For him, its being hopeless and could be the end of everything so, he is only alone by himself seeking somewhere a place where he, his self and I could figure out everything. Yeah. Its more on internal struggle and regrets.
well said! thank you for sharing your take! 😊
Aww your meaning hits me hard. I have so many regrets I'm 50 I've done very stupid stuff in marriage life and with my children. I want to forgive myself but it's hard. I've been diagnosed with cancer and know that God only has the last say so but I fear I'm out of time to fix things. I have my kids in my life and we're all very close but my husband I had left passed also from cancer so there's no fixing there. My kids are most important feel I need to do more for them to make up for my screw ups. I used to use drugs for a few years in my younger day and it caused us all a lot of grief I have been clean for many years and now this. Idk.......
In my opinion, this song is more like a poem or a parable. In the verse 1, we can see that the lyric says something like walk across and empty land and knew the pathway like the back of hand. It means that he/she used to feel that kind of feeling. It is not a new one for him/her. Empty land means like an emptiness, maybe lonliness, feeling empty inside heart, or even a broken heart feeling.
And so on until the pre chorus there is some lyric that says simple thing where have you gone, maybe the simple thing refers to love or someone that he/she loved. And as the lyrics say im getting old and so on, it is just like a begging that he/she is cannot living by his/her own, too tired, too desperate, hopeless, and really looking for the "simple thing" to be found.
More or less is like that I think.
So the conclusion is this song has a very very deep meaning for someone who really have a problem inside their ownself
I love the line by line analysis and interpretation or such an iconic song. Thanks for covering this.
thank you for your comment, glad you enjoyed!
Great analysis, I want to add that I also had an early relationship to this song that you had, but after losing a best friend to suicide this song took on a very literal meaning, so not just a romantic relationship but one that transcends all boundaries, and that kind of pulled together both your interpretations, losing that person, it was an external and internal struggle. We spread his ashes into a local river, his closest friends, so yeah a literal place and an internal space are being described at the same time. Great job again.
hi heather,
thank you for your comment and for sharing how this song seems to have intricately fit into an aspect of your life experience. you stated everything so beautifully ✨ i'm sorry for your loss🙏
Great analysis. I love it. I think it’s talking about a real place near Battle England and referring to a time the band (whose members are great friends) were struggling with fame and desire to return to simple times before their stardom. What’s great about Keane’s music is that as they sing about their own experiences, they communicate in a way that individuals can translate to their own lives. It is utterly life changing for people. I’d love to hear more analysis of more of their work. Sunshine would be a great place to begin 😊
This song says everything is not permanent in this world, it's chenges every moment, it may the nature you love, friends, place, and age. We miss the moment when it was gone cuz it never comes back, so Be happy always
He's singing about his childhood ❤❤
I think this is very introspective and can relate to this very much. I am at a point in my life not knowing how I got here and have to look back and join the dots to figure out how it all went down. I grew up on Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean and DREAM of going back there. The physical connection would bring back access to the simple joy life had there. I take the WE as being his younger self and current self. I do feel the desperation to get back there, for me personally I also think about this when Taylor sings "I can go anywhere I want, anywhere I want, just not home" - I think this is not really the way Taylor intended but is true for me. I LOVED this analysis, thank you 💙
Definately internal imo. Good job, I like that you are being serious about this.
He walked across an empty land (depression, sadness, addiction) and that's all he knew.
He found this river, water, change, help, hope. Now he needs something else, something that he is not good at yet. Something he doesn't know like the "back of his hand" yet.
I think this song represents a relationship that is failing. He wants to go to their favorite place to rekindle the spark. "This could be the end of everything" could mean how much it means to him that they work it out and find the love they once had for each other again.
Good analysis. But I see this as love relationship that has become difficult and problematic and the person is going back to a time and place when things were simple like being in love where love drowns all issues. I also see it more like a forest and running creek or river.
I think you could also look at it like how the music industry had changed
I love this video! Looking for more videos about Keane's lyrics
thank you! glad you enjoyed 😊
This song is talking to himself..dealing with depression
It's about passage(river) of time and first love... He's walking upon memories. That place changed, but in his head it's all the same. I felt the lyrics and they made me complete... They just killed me...
BTW for some reason Forrest Gump comes to mind...
It was very clear and it helps me a lot. Thanks💗
This song is all about the some mistake in the life, but it's never happened cause it's all in the vision
The protagonist is about to avoid the every feel and fear in the life when you feel of the emptyness, the only way to survive it you need some lone time to figure it out before choosing the wrong path to moving forward to the future
But the main strong power for it is getting love by every one surrounds
I find truth in everyone's opinion...you all are right
i think is about getting lost and entering the complexities of life
❤😂he might meant to another dimension where he came from, but now he's been stuck and lost in the hologram , trying to find the way back. 😅😅😅
I feel like
It’s about The want to run away from this world from the bullshit from the crap from the pain
Into our own little world
Bc the worlds just fcked
As if it would be ending yk
Making memories with someone you love and now he/she gone.or died. Idk.
I think it’s about depression. And isn’t the first time he has this. He is thinking about take his life.
for me it is about death
jajaja i think that the analysis is good but i dont understend inglish very well
