I view _"Playin' hide-and-seek and givin' me your weekends"_ in the context of the love triangle as the guy hiding out with the other woman on regular days and then giving out his weekends to his girlfriend (protagonist) to 'pacify her suspicions' every time she was looking for him. Too bad, she was apparently aware of the situation anyway.
YES. that's definitely a way to view it, it makes it even more heartbreaking bc we get a glimpse of the *literal games* he was playing but it makes sense. makes me empathize with the protagonist even more.. thank you for pointing out that viewpoint! 😊
Thanks for your analysis❤ Taylor's lyrics are just amazing! In this song, I think the repetition of "when you are young they assume you know nothing" and her stating at the end "I knew everything when I was young" and the many "I knew..." are all important elements. A song about and celebrating young love and very intense feelings = "knowing everything" (as opposed to "nothing"), what's really important in life, which maybe we forget or don't really feel the same way, when we get older. It's really "they" who know nothing❤
I think “but I knew you” also means she also knew his dark side, and kinda knew this was gonna come but she stayed because he made her feel like his favourite cardigan and like you said she depended her self worth unto him.
Also we have to remember that the high-line used to be a working train track but now it’s just a park. So it’s not the same thing, but it is still beautiful. So when she says “I knew you stepping on the last train” it was the last train before the rail road closed down and became a park. The train tracks was their relationship, and it turned into a just a memory which would be the park. When he stepped on the last train he said goodbye to their relationship.
omg i didn't know it used to be a train track, thank you so much for pointing that out! 😊 that really puts it into a different perspective, i love what you're saying about the train tracks being reflective of their relationship and it's ending! trains as a symbol can also be significant bc they represent transportation and movement over a relatively large area. now that the train no longer exists there...the train station that had a lot of movement is now stagnant...and that's where their memories are too...kind of a foreshadow...their love will reflect the high line...stagnancy and no longer going anywhere...😭 thank you for sharing! 😊✨
Love this!!! What I thought was the song or music brings her back to the rose coloured glasses of love, but she knew it wasn’t meant to be, but. He comes back to her in the sense of a memory “park train” is the end of the relationship. Her music is amazing she wants us all to picture something, not to specific. Ah
I love the part "When you are young they assume you know nothing, but i knew you, dancing in your levis drunk under the streetlights.... (and so on)",some people tend to overlook the power of young love, but what really matters is you know your partner so well, even the smallest of things about them. And that's all that matters... So i totally agree with you
I feel like "leaving like a father" doesn't necessarily mean that she viewed him as a father figure. It could be just a reference to how her own father left her when she needed him and wanted him to do better- how the same pain/emotions she had back then that she thought were long gone and buried are resurfacing after he left her the same way. As someone with daddy issues, that line struck me differently especially since I only cried to "better man" when I started associating it to my own dad. I also have a different interpretation for the "running like water" part. If you try to catch running water with your bare hands, you won't be able to catch most of it. It'll all run through your fingers and you just end up getting drenched. Protag described him like running water since she knew that no matter how hard she tried, he'll still end up leaving her drenched and cold with just a few drops in her palms that'll soon vanish too. She KNEW that their relationship was bound to end sooner or later, she just tried her best to keep postponing it (the few drops she'd be able to catch). In the end she's left alone, drenched in their memories. She knew all of this while everyone thought she was just naive and fighting a lost battle.
My interpretation is that, throughout the song when she sings "you put me on and said I was your favorite" the love interest lied to her, she wasn't his favorite. (Because of the double meaning of you put me on which is to lie and decieve someone). In the outro, she said the guy would come back to her. Eventually he did. He would be all sorry, standing in her front porch light. Now when she sings the exact same line when she felt like an old cardigan and he put it on and said she was his favorite, it's real this time. She really was his favorite. He came into this realization after the thrill expired and he missed her, after he was done playing games / cheating on her.
This is by far the BEST analysis of the song! You did an exceptional job!! Another interpretation of the line “you put me on and said I was your favorite”, could mean that he put her on (led her on) and made her feel like she was his favorite of the two girls. A momentary vindication for the pain he caused her. Also, the line, “running like water” for me means that he ran fast to the other girl, he left like a father (didn’t uphold his honor to those who relied on him) and ran like water (running water that you can’t stop or catch). Finally, I always had the feeling that this song was about Betty losing James to the other woman, and Betty reminiscing about it when she was quite a bit older-like in her 20’s or 30’s. She had the clarity of hindsight and the maturity of someone who’s gone through some stuff.
This is one of most awesome video I saw. Such a knowledge and the way she decode the words is mind blowing. I hope to see more videos from you. Thank you so much from bottom of my heart 💞
i didnt know this song could become more relatable til i watched your analysis. good Lord i feel like i was run over by a train with the way you interpreted taylor's lyrics.
Tried to change the ending Peter losing Wendy The ending in Peter Pan was Wendy moving away from Neverland forever and back to real world. The guy here wanted to change the ending so wendy(protaganist) stays with him in Neverland.
I love ur videos it’s so refreshing to have in depth lyrical analyses of Taylor’s songs. And analyses that are strictly about the lyrics presented not tabloids or who she’s dating etc. I feel like the general public lacks a certain appreciation for Taylor’s great song writing bc everyone can get so caught up in “who is this song about”. I luv Tay’s music so it’s irritating to me when I see ppl put the her songs in a box ya know like they limit their and the world’s perceptions of the songs instead of just taking the song as a piece of art and not exclusively as some clue to Taylor’s love life. Taylor is so clever and intentional in the way she writes her songs ppl do them such a disservice. E.g So It Goes..., like the magician analogy or metaphor that gets carried throughout the entire song. The eclipses in the title. Like she put those details in there and they get ignored. And such songs often get overlooked bc the meaning of them might not be so obvious on the surface just like Daylight. I’m sorry why am I ranting/ venting 😩
i really appreciate your comment, thanks for saying all of that :) i agree, i think her lyrical content is often overlooked. she's so meticulously intentional w/ everything...even down to her punctuation like you mentioned. she really is a wordsmith and i have so much respect for her in that regard...even when you track certain metaphors and imagery through her diff albums they fit together and depict growth. she's a true artist, i wish more ppl would view her songs as intentional pieces of storytelling b/c they're all like mini-novels
on disney plus she released a documentary explaining all the songs and she said betty, august, and cardigan were a love triangle ! and that she refers to the “other woman” in her head as augustine! you were so spot on
I love your interpretation. This song is so significant to me but the roles are switched in my world with what I went through. After hearing this it just made the song more relatable.
what i think it’s amazing about this album it’s because they have multiples interpretations. and always when i think about this song, i kind see like she also might be talking about the fame, and how that give you scars
yes i agree! that could be a way to look at this song too! especially when you look at the lyrics to 'hoax': "you knew it still hurt underneath my scars from when **they** pulled me apart" could def be referring to fame! thank you for your comment 😊
Baby kiss it better could also related to when you’re a kids and get a “boo boo” and your parent would kiss it to “make it better.” The kiss is reassurances a kid that it’ll be better
This got me so emotional because I can relate with this song on so many different levels. this analysis gave me a deeper understanding of the song and also perfectly summarised my old relationship. Thank you so much for this analysis currently binge watching your videos 😅😅 it’s a rlly great feeling when you can relate to a song.
omg i love you please be my english teacher, i am so glad i found this channel, i would literally spend my time watching your videos they are so deep and informative, thank u for this!!!!!
I always interpreted the "playing hide and seek and giving me your weekends" line as like that he was playing hide and seek with Betty while he was hanging out with Augustine. like he was trying to hide from her because he was cheating on her . And exactly because time is so valuable he only chooses to give her the weekend, like the end of the week, the scraps of the week, the easy part because it's always harder to make time during all the other days of the week when you're busier so that's time is much more valuable than the weekend , when everyone is much more relaxed and free.
SS, great job again on interp on this song, you have an art for doing this, must say the best I've ran across on UA-cam so please keep it up!. This is a pretty intense song and all the interaction of other possible songs on the album with this one is like a puzzle, especially putting them in sequence of order as some can overlap others. My thought on the "Heartbeat on the Highline once in twenty lifetimes" is possibly her age (20) at the time of their separation "this time" (him leaving on train) and also being they were together over one year (once in twenty lifetimes) but less than two (as a year is a lifetime when you're 20 and missing someone). My further thoughts is that Betty cannot do without James and looks for a way back to him (don't want to say my thoughts on this as you have yet to get to those songs). Look forward to your next one.
thank you for your kind words!! :) you're so right, this song really is a puzzle, it refers to a lot of songs on this album. the more i'm going thru these songs, the more i'm concerned for betty too.
I also think that the "baby kiss it better" line is kind of important. I'm thinking of two ways to interpret it. One is that 'kiss it better' is a common expression that most parents use when their child is hurt and they 'kiss it better' to take away the pain. So even though the wound doesn't actually heal the child feels comforted by the act of love. So although love isn't enough to heal a wound it kind of gives you the illusion of it being healed. So maybe Betty already knew that James was going to hurt her but the attention and love he gave her distracted her and created that cloudiness and illusion which then created the feeling of comfort. Or maybe she just talks about how after she got cheated, James tried to apologize to her by showing her the same love and affection but it just wasn't enough to seal and heal the wound and take away the real pain...
"A useful piece of fall clothing", hehe love it! When she says "lose the one" it can also link to her song The 1. Interesting with the 20 number I never made the link to the Lover album, so glad you pointed it out. - like "have known you 20 seconds, or 20 years" - intriguing.

i'm still working on figuring this one out! i have some ideas but i haven't decided which way to interpret it, i think i still need to go thru a few other songs before i do that one...i do think there is more than one point of view in that song. there's so many way to look at it!! but it is coming soon!! :)
that lyric refers to betty knowing that james would come back to her after he cheated. the "thrill" here refers to the fling that james had. the word "thrill" is used because that fling might've been exciting and "thrilling" for james to experience...but it didn't last because there was really no substance to it/ no foundation to keep that fling stable...& betty knew this. she knew that what she and james had was substantial and that he'd realize that while his fling may have been fun for a little while (a "thrill") that he'd realize he had something that was real with betty and he'd want her back i realize my discussion of that lyric got cut from my video on accident so thank you for bringing this up! 😊✨
Thank you. I just don’t understand stuff like this. I like the songs for bops and know Taylor is know for her lyric and story telling but I even just watched the music video and I’m still lost. My autistic brain just can’t understand it and I can’t read deeper into the things. It’s so frustrating and while I’m not stupid when it comes to Taylor I feel very stupid.

What about you would miss me once the thrill expired??
that lyric refers to betty knowing that james would come back to her after he cheated. the "thrill" here refers to the fling that james had. the word "thrill" is used because that fling might've been exciting and "thrilling" for james to experience...but it didn't last because there was really no substance to it/ no foundation to keep that fling stable...& betty knew this.
she knew that what she and james had was substantial and that he'd realize that while his fling may have been fun for a little while (a "thrill") that he'd realize he had something that was real with betty and he'd want her back
i realize my discussion of that lyric got cut from my video on accident so thank you for bringing this up! 😊✨
Hiii can you do lyrical analysis on Halsey song
