I saw Keane at Glastonbury this year. I had never really listened to them properly or paid much attention to them, but holy smokes can Tom Chaplin sing. They opened with Bend and Break before progressing into Silenced by the Night, which he belted out. Consider me a Keane fan! The vibe was great as an audience member at the Pyramid Stage 🤩
I love Keane so much!! I live in the US, and the number of people I know that don't know Keane! They always recognize the songs in the end, but I feel like Keane didn't get as much recognition as they deserved here.
Witness Fil's "Not Pitch Corrected" smiling face. 😃 Nice performance. Thanks for sharing Keane with us. I'd not heard them before, but Tom does have a lovely voice.
Likewise. I recognised the song but always thought they were just another boy band. A terrific voice, I’ll be giving them a listen today. Fil’s smiles say it all.
I too have not listened to any Keane music until now - and his singing is a true gem. In a couple of ways - like the tone of his voice - he reminds me of Jeff Buckley. That's a compliment, of course. 🙂
Have seen them live, and it's something I can recommend. As Fil said, Tom is a great singer and they are a really good live band. There's 5 studio albums. All but one reached No.1 in the UK. It only made it to No.2 =)
In 2004, I saw Keane perform this song on Top of the Pops. This started a 20 year love affair with Keane. I have seen them live 5 times, most recently in Dublin last month. Tom's vocals that night were the best I've ever heard them. His voice has definitely improved with time. Here's to the next 20 years!
I'm late to watching this one, but smiled with how happy you are with the vocal! He is authentic and a great singer in my opinion. Great analysis as always sir 👍
Hi glad you said that because it's what I plan to post in the comments to showcase Tom's voice. If you could only choose one song to show how good he is I'd say Bridge Over Troubled Water is the one. I now seriously want Tom and Tim to tackle Art Garfunkels Bright Eyes. I think he could knock that out of the park.
I really like these simple stripped back performances without all the over production, compression, reverb and other tricks that cloud the sound on commercial recordings.
They're always my favorites, too. Aside from enjoying the performance, I'm a singing geek. It makes it easier to see and hear what artists are doing with their breathing, their phrasing, etc.
His voice is beautiful. Something sad within. I remember when I first heard Silenced by the Night. I was driving and it was just after my son had died from an overdose. I burst into tears bc it struck such a chord. The pain we were experiencing involved much more than the addiction my son succumbed to. The song will always be powerfully emotional and as beautiful as it is, impossible to listen to. Not to be a downer, but I think it is important for all of us to be able to express how music affects us.
😔😔there are no words for what you had to go through.... My condolencies😢. And yes, music can have such a great impact in your life, making it at least more beatable.
Thanks for this Fil! I'm a singer-songwriter myself and I've always loved and have great respect for Keane and Tom's voice. I've also been a professional singer for many years so I can also confirm how hard it is to sing like this unless you have the proper technique (even though he makes it sound effortless). A master controller and no mistake! 👏
Keane is an incredible band, in 2006 I heard Tom do a cover of U2's With or Without You on Radio 1's Live Lounge, which had me hooked. I went to see them live at the o2 in 2007 and heard Hamburg Song for the first time, talk about ear candy, it blew me away.
I'm a huge Keane fan and absolutely delighted that you're taking a look at another Keane live performance, thank you for a brilliant analysis. Much appreciated! :)
He has such a lovely, lovely voice. This song reminds me of my oldest son being born. I listened to it a lot the year he was born. Brings back such happy memories.
I saw Tom sing "It's a Hard Life" by Queen live on the Prince's Trust Gala back in the day and I was FLOORED. I already liked and respected Keane, but that took my admiration to a whole new level.
Wow! Truely amazing, and clear proof that pitch correction is needed only for someone who can’t sing. All notes are bang on lines, except where they are deliberately falling flat or sharp for artistic effect. It proves that modern music didn’t die yet!
Fil’s ability to analyse and demonstrate vocal techniques is superb. I so much more listen out for and appreciate the subtleties of vocal performances now. I’d love to have him as my vocal coach, so my partner wouldn’t cringe every time I start singing 😬
I agree with tis post. It's so nice to hear from someone who can analyse singing without obsessing over the high notes and belting. I tried asking about this in a music forum once but all they spoke about is high notes and a singer’s power
How good is it to hear such a great LIVE performance 😎 Tom's voice is so accurate, your analysis shows just how good. True artists against pitch correction !! Great work Fil 👍🏻
The vocals are so clear and pure. The sound moves you in such a sincere way. The emotion and feel is simply moving. Listen with 🎧. I LOVE IT!!!! You are the best at helping us absorb all of the richness in such a wonderful performance. Thx Fil.
This is lovely, and it was great to get back to Keane and hear Tom's unaltered vocals, especially since the pitch correction seems to be unusual for them. With his ability, it makes you wonder why it would ever be done. I thought this might be a Tiny Desk Concert at first (which is a great NPR series) given the background, but it isn't. Still a great stripped down performance though and appreciate your analysis of his vocal technique.
I think I bought this CD for the song, "Everybody's Changing" back then, but fell in love with this song as well. His voice is so lovely all on its own here...thank you for sharing this one, and for a nice look back at a great band and vocalist! ❤
Pretty much similar story to me. Was aware of Somewhere Only We Know but it was when Everybody's Changing came out that I thought wow and was really taken with that song and it's video. Bought the single them album and became a total fan.
Woah, I've heard this performance many times, it sounds lovely, and obviously you can hear his pitch is very good but seeing it on a graph is crazy. The middle of his vibrato is on point, I had my doubts about it having pitch correction, but clearly he is just that tuned
Yes, that was outstanding. I've heard this sung before, but it was a cover by someone else and I didn't realise that was the title of this song or that this was the original artist. Yes, a seamless performance. Thank you.
Auuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhh!!!!! Someone read my mind!!!! To all the people who are not familiar with Tom s voice, he did some amazing covers, not only of Queen songs, but also from Elton John, Genesis and others. And from his recent outstanding Keane performances, the intro of the song You are young, when he plays with the audience.and hits notes is.just woooooow!! That is why I love watching (and in November I will be attending my first Keane gig ever🥹🥹😊🥰) and listening Keane live: simple, real, no autotune, no pitch correction. And tons of fan videos can prove that😊. Plus, Tim, Richard and Jesse do a great work too.
I love to see you smile during this session. I Saw Keane this thursday In Denmark, and it was One of the best concerts In my life. Tom Chaplin really is an AMAZING singer ❤️
Just heard that another analisyis on Tom s voice had been done, and that it was pitch corrected. But I m not so surprised, cause at one point or another, even if it s only once, it happens to almost all musicians. And an important thing to say, which makes Tom more impressive, is the fact that he was basically an addict from 2000 to 2015 (co*aine, drin*ing, smo*ing, we*ed and other dru*s). He tried rehab in 2005, then entered for a couple of months in a center in 2006, remained (sort of) clean at least from co*aine, but not from other stuff, and relapsed heavily into co*aine and drin*ing by 2013, and was close to death in 2014. And thanks to psychotherapy, he recovered, he learnt to control his voice, and his singing improved dramatically (for good). And now in 2024 he is doing better than ever; he does not seem the same person at all (apart from his physical changes), he is enjoying life, has been touring all 2024, they re doing freakin great in Keane. Tom has also released solo stuff and done performances during lockdown (worthwile checking Hardened Heart -a solo song- lockdown version). He is truly worth listening to (I mean, you may or may not like his type of voice, which has always been in that high register, or the type of music he performs, but it is undeniable that the guy can sing truly well). Sorry for the *, but i didn t know if youtube would not censor those terms. And sorry!! for long boring comments that i expect no one to read in full ;-)
Thanks for that! I hadn't followed Tom's entire story over the years - this sounds really tragic. I'm glad he made it through. Kudos to Tim and Richard for sticking with him. It can't have been easy for them, either.
Yes, as Fil said here, he found only one Keane live performance with Tom's vocals being pitch corrected afterwards, and that is Keane - Live At The O2 Arena, London, 2007. Unfortunately the pitch corrected version was released on DVD, Blu Ray, UA-cam, and that's what we get after the show, not Tom's real live vocals at the O2. However, I'm now beyond happy to see this brilliant analysis of Tom's voice and vocal technique, and actually surprised that Fil did it at all. Last year, Fil's viewers didn't seem to know or care about Keane (but then Fil also had substantially less subscribers back then). :)
After listening to this live performance and your analysis, the suggestion that this artist probably requested record label to end the earlier use of PC and limit effects, seems accurate. That zoom in visual was needed.
Blady brilliant superb singer and so accurate. And if he has instructed and insisted that pitch correction is not used full credit to this artist for having the balls to stand up for music
Just lovely, he has a pure and very clear voice! I find so much emotion in this performance! Fil, you are just so awesome at pointing out the fine details that the untrained ear may well miss! I loved this, even the bit of vocal fry😅! Your analytical abilities amaze me!💜
I loved this song the first time I heard it, and it's been a constant on my playlists ever since. I enjoyed this unaltered vocal and your analysis, because it was his clear, clean voice that immediately jumped out at me when I first heard it. 🎶😊
Hi Fil! This was a great performance! The song was lovely, and Tom has a very nice voice as well. Im amazed that it was Tom's original voice and it wasn't pitch corrected! Im glad you had to make this video! 😉 Thank you for another amazing analysis, and Congrats on getting another 1000 subs on your channel! You ROCK!
Hi Fil, This was a wonderful analysis. Tom has great vocals and is a pleasure to listen to. This was an awesome song as well. I love these laid back but emotion packed songs that just leave you wanting to hear more. Thank you for doing this one tonight, You Are The Best! Debbie ☮️
Beautiful voice. It is very musical. I have stated here before that it is up to the singers who can sing to stipulate in their contracts that there is to be no pitch correction or auto tune of their vocals. If the recording businesses had to pay out money for breech of contract the travesty of messing up vocals would stop. This way we the listeners would be able to enjoy real music such as this. Great analysis. Thank you for this.
This is why I love strip back performances. Piano and vocals or Acoustic and vocals. You get to hear nothing but vocal technique and pure sound. Keane's voice is so controlled, easy and expressive. This is worth a second watch or listen. Thanks for another brilliant analysis !
Ha ha, I was listening and singing along and Fil comes in and I had to go to the original to finish singing along. I know this song "like the back of my hand." The, "I'm getting old", line hits harder now that there's gray in his hair. Something I always appreciate about them is that even though they must have done this song hundreds, maybe thousands, of times, they still give it their all, every time. Random: 11:20 I love how this song does the lighter, "OO", first and then the second time is the heavier, "OH." It's often the other way around. By the time a song is ending, your voice can be tired, so it's easier to sing the light OO, rather than the louder/heavier OH sound. This song flips it, and it's a testament to the power and control of his voice. I know I had to work on that when I would sing this song. Correct breathing is so much of it. Again, I sound like a 15 year old fangirl (I'm in my 50s) but this made me all weepy. This band came into my life at just the right time. Their music changed my life. They gave me back my love of music when I thought I had lost it. Even way back then I was starting to think few people had talent anymore. They made me think, people DO still have talent! And they gave me back the opportunity and the heart to sing, myself, when I thought I never would again. Their songs are the perfect range for me, so they are always a joy to sing. They are a wonderful breathing exercise! Thank you for confirming that he really does sound that good. That's it's not all lies and fakery. You just can't know how much that means to me. Now, if I could just be as coordinated as Richard, so that I could play shaker and tambourine at the same time. I haven't practiced either one in years.
you re not alone. I mean, in being over 50 and liking Keane and Tom s voice, and them having a specific meaning in your life😊. Not in the singing, cause I m not exactly good at it. But it s great that other fans like you are👍👍👍
Love this. Tom has such an amazing voice. They were superb live recently. My other fav band is Depeche Mode. If you could do one of their songs that would be amazing. Enjoy the Silence or Personal Jesus would be fab ❤
This is what music is all about! Tom Chaplin is such a great singer, his duet with Queen during the Princes’s Trust is worth a look as well. As he tackles Queen’s “It’s a Hard Life” which was only performed by Freddie during The Works Tour
I saw that performance and was beyond impressed. I already knew he was a fantastic singer, but seeing him tackle one of my favorite Queen songs live like that was just a whole new level of respect.
@@miakulick Yep, not even 2 weeks ago on Patreon (but I might not have been the only one). Fil really looks after his audience. 😊 It's wonderful to see that this brings back lovely memories for so many people or even introduces Keane to some for the first time.
This is such a gorgeous song! One of my favorite songs from Keane (or from any group). I love Tom's vocal and the band's performance, and no pitch correction in sight!! Yay!
This was a delight to hear, great voice, great lyrics. Amazing to me is how you're able to perfectly inhabit the skin of so many wildly different artists to emulate their sounds for us, articulate their approach to notes, to demonstate their chosen techniques or their simply natural characteristics. I can't be the first to marvel at this chameleon like skill you display - in every show! What you do, even if *you* think of it as just a part of teaching, WE know is very special indeed, that there's not many, if any, who can do what you do.🌟👏
YAY, FINALLY, KEANE!!! Oh, goodness, I do look forward to hearing this when done working. I will use it for motivation to hurry up. Keane are one of my favorite bands of all time! Even way back when I first discovered them, I was discouraged about music in general and my own music in particular. They renewed my love for music. I don't say that lightly. I was about to give up. I've had the chance to use so many of their songs in voice class and even performed... I think it was this one, at a recital. One of the greatest joys of my life. I'm so glad that I got to see them before they became so huge. I saw them in small venues in Chicago. In fact, my sister had bought us tickets to see them again. I was SO excited. Unfortunately, that was early 2020 right before the pandemic. We were both checking our phones constantly to see if maybe they'd still be able to squeeze in the shows. Nope. Now who knows if we'll be able to see them ever again. If you had told me Tom was fake I would have been crushed. But at least from the title, it seems he's not. You have no idea how happy that makes me. Truly.
Colin Blunstone's rendition of the Denny Laine song "Say You Don't Mind" would be a good reaction! Tom Chaplin has a certain Blunstonian quality at times. I swear I came across a clip years ago of Keane covering "I Don't Believe in Miracles," but maybe that was a fever dream of mine.
I think I fell asleep listening to this cd for at least a year when they released it. I didn’t think this song would still make me feel so excited to listen to it because I so overplayed it, but it really still does make my heart do something special
Tom has the most beautiful voice - I saw Keane in Leeds recently and they were brilliant! Lovely to hear this stripped back performance too.
How refreshing to hear someone who can actually sing so beautifully and expressive, oh the good old days, I always loved this song
Tom sounds better now than then.
Tom's version of Queen's "It's a hard life' is good, and I say that as a fan of nearly 40 years.
I watched them live, and Tom's voice is just pure perfection! Best British singer nowadays, in my opinion.

His cover of “It’s a hard Life” performed with Queen is truly fantastic
Yes!!!!!! It blew me away!!!!
Best live covers of Queen songs I’ve ever heard and I have heard MANY
Keane and beautiful Tom Chaplin's voice are everything
What a beautiful performance! Tom sounds amazing! I agree with you - he has gotten better with age.
In 2004, I saw Keane perform this song on Top of the Pops. This started a 20 year love affair with Keane. I have seen them live 5 times, most recently in Dublin last month. He is the Steve Perry of this generation. He's absolutely my favorite vocalist of all time.
I'm late to watching this one, but smiled with how happy you are with the vocal! He is authentic and a great singer in my opinion. Great analysis as always sir 👍
He did a cover of "bridge over troubled water" and it's truly phenomenal
I will check that out.

It's a Hard Life he also nailed.
I freaking love Keane
I really like these simple stripped back performances without all the over production, compression, reverb and other tricks that cloud the sound on commercial recordings.
There's a reason why they're used. Studio tracks aren't live performances
They're always my favorites, too. Aside from enjoying the performance, I'm a singing geek. It makes it easier to see and hear what artists are doing with their breathing, their phrasing, etc.
Man Tom's queen covers show just how good he is live especially who wants to live forever which is a very difficult song to sing
Floating and fluid, like wisp of smoke trailing along. Beautiful, a panoramic 4D voice, if ever there was one, coloring space and time.
What a fabulous description
Lost in time. And lost in space... and meaning.
It _is_ an entertaining description of a singer's voice, @christinemalone - but nonetheless meaningless. 🙄
@@assininecomment1630 I guess my quotation of the last words of Rocky Horror Picture Show jive with your statement.

I loved this song the first time I heard it, and it's been a constant on my playlists ever since. I enjoyed this unaltered vocal and your analysis, because it was his clear, clean voice that immediately jumped out at me when I first heard it. 🎶😊
he really takes you on a ride with him.
You ROCK!
Hi Fil,
This was a wonderful analysis. Tom has great vocals and is a pleasure to listen to. This was an awesome song as well. I love these laid back but emotion packed songs that just leave you wanting to hear more. Thank you for doing this one tonight, You Are The Best! Debbie ☮️
I really enjoyed listening to your analysis as well as this live performance by Keane. Tom's vocals are so clear and are a joy to listen to. 😊🎸🎵
I saw Keane live in 2006 and they made me cry. So beautiful.
Absolutely beautiful. Thanks Fil.
Great voice! At times reminds me of Paul McCartney, & other times Freddie Mercury. Love your reactions Fil. Nice analysis.

I love how this song does the lighter, "OO", first and then the second time is the heavier, "OH." It's often the other way around.
But it s great that other fans like you are👍👍👍
I love this song & I love that this performance is natural. His voice is amazing.
Really enjoyed seeing you smile so much Fil
@@jackiedaytona2200 Hé did a stellar job, not to mention that “It’s A Hard Life” is not an easy song to sing
Love your videos and passion for this art. Thanks, keep it up.
Plus his diction and dynamics are superb.
💯
Saw them live 20 years ago. It was just the vocalist, drummer and keyboardist. Can't believe it's been that long ago. Tom still sounds great.
I love Keane! Looking forward to this.
I watched them live in Seattle and they were amazing.
Keane is one of my favorite bands. I'm happy you showcased them.
just beautiful
Hey Fil, thanks for getting back to my request! 😊
If this was your request, Thanks!!🥹🥹🥹🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
@@miakulick Yep, not even 2 weeks ago on Patreon (but I might not have been the only one). Fil really looks after his audience. 😊 It's wonderful to see that this brings back lovely memories for so many people or even introduces Keane to some for the first time.
This is such a gorgeous song! One of my favorite songs from Keane (or from any group). I love Tom's vocal and the band's performance, and no pitch correction in sight!! Yay!
Incredible natural pitch! Don't even need software to hear it.
Great update as always Fil. Tom is a brilliant singer.
What you do, even if *you* think of it as just a part of teaching, WE know is very special indeed, that there's not many, if any, who can do what you do.🌟👏
this IS the place that I've been dreaming of :D - I love to see you smile
Truly.
Maybe I should send you one of my rehearsals to see if I can sing without pitch correction. Maybe my voice teacher was lying to me all those years. ;)
Tom has a touch of a Freddy Mercury in parts of his melodic delivery.
He’s a real singer.
Yes, I thought the same about hearing similarities to Freddie’s voice.
Tom did some concerts singing Queen songs- he was astounding.
Thanks, Fil! I've been listening to VTuber songs all day so this was a night and day difference.
Thank You! Tom Chaplin and Keane are Real and Amazing!
🌎✌🌱🎶🎸
Thanks again for this lesson: How to really listen to a song!
Masterful vocal. Thanks Fil, really enjoyed this.
Great video. Tom is a superb singer.
Great song writing. That note at 2:46 took me somewhere. Nice guitar build.
One of my favourite videos x
One of the best melodies I've ever heard ❤️
Wonderful voice I’m so glad that I got to hear it without the voice being manipulated. Thank you. 😊
💯
This is a master class in great contemporary tenor singing. Not just in the vocal technique, but in building the song. Brilliant stuff!
6 am here in 🇦🇷 ,and I haven't go to sleep yet😅. Too enthusiastic re listening to this and spreading the word😊
I've heard Keane's singer perform this song live, a guest spot at a Divine Comedy show in London - he sounded *amazing*
All the way stripped to a string guitar and a tambourine. Absolutely wonderful.
💯
I just love this song. ❤ This version sounds amazing. And I love your shirt, Fil. 🥰
Wow that's impressive.. Thx Fil for highlighting this 👍
Thank you Fil. Another great analysis video and lesson for me.
