      @@WizardTerence Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with your dealer. I guess I was very lucky considering our local dealer had never had a new MX-5 on their lot, never had anyone order one from them and they were just as excited to order one of the limited RF's to be manufactured and shipped to New Zealand. They really made the whole experience one to remember. It was interesting talking to the manager of this dealership where he described how quite often the dealers become complacent about selling cars and forget that often it's quite a big deal for the customer and they have to remind themselves of that. At my dealership however it turned out to be quite a big deal for them to handle this transaction from day one.
      Hope you have a better experience in the future and do enjoy your car! :^)

    Great review Brian. I agree with you on the Roadster as far as the purity of what the MX-5 is supposed to be, but at the end of the day, I still opted for the RF and haven’t so far regretted my decision. In an ideal world, I’d own one of each, but I don’t have the garage space for another one unfortunately. I do think the Club spec is the sweet spot for getting the best bang for the buck. The LSD over the open diff in the base Sport is worth the slight price increase. If I had the option to spec mine like you can in Canada, I would probably opt for the GS-P package you were driving since I would probably take mine to the track or Autocross occasionally.

    Great honest review, and well produced video. I hope you gain more subscribers, you deserve it.
    1. If you really like the raw experience of feeling the surroundings like wind, noise, temperature change, unobstructed views... the RF is not for you, the RF is like a "targa"
    2. Bilsteins, only noticeable on track.
    3. Brembos, very useful for spirited canyon driving, zero fade.
    4. LSD, makes the car feel different in canyons, maybe is a placebo effect on my mind.
    Right before Covid I did a 6K miles solo-camping-trip touching all California's National Parks and landmarks driving exclusively on backroads. I couldn't have picked a better car!

  • @EjinRenos

    Having driven both, it all boils down to what someone likes the look of more and how much you know to care for convertible soft tops which can be a lot of work if you don't know what you're doing.
    Both have the same wind noise on normal days. The only time the RF is louder is on windy days with crosswinds, and its not by much. It seems like much because it becomes surround sounds versus just in the front because of the windshield.
    In USA at least, the base model RF is a club spec. The more expensive with leather seats and fancy features is GT spec. Softop base spec is Sport which has no LSD, standard brake calipers, and standard struts with cloth seats. If you're looking for a sports car in manual, LSD is a must. If you want an auto cruiser, the base is fine. If you're building a car, a base is fine unless you're okay with the oem upgrades of the club and want to save on a bit of money and time. If you like the safety features included extra of the top trim, then go for that I guess.

    • @alangross2277

      The Club with the BBS Package gives you BBS Rims, Brembo Brakes, tuned Billsteins, Recaro Seats (Leather Seats before 2019) and the Aroe Package, but not all of the electronic BS of the GT. It's the best of both worlds, one might say. I like the flip mirror instead of auto dimming: I have light sensitive eyes and I use the flip mirror even in the daytime when I have somebody behind me with super bright lights on.

  • @ag4allgood

    Hey Brian " What do you love " ? Yea its the convertible roadster ! I daily drive a 2016 MX-5 soft top Club down in Illinois with the winter tires on it the car is STILL a blast in snow ! I got the Naughty bits ( Brembo / BBS package ) & I use that limited slip differential constantly in winter. Now tell me I don't need the lighter wheels or the Brembo's ( yes I use the benefits without tracking but don't tell that to the local Police ) ! BTW with the windows up & heater blasting the top comes down often below 32 degrees F.
    One other thing , during the COVID 19 Pandemic this car has been a total mood changer. Feeling down or just not altogether jump in take a drive ... it cures your mood !

    Great Video Brian, looking forward to the proper winter video with snow driving impressions. Also If I was going to get this as a daily do you recommend getting the LSD model or the non-LSD model? does that make a different in winter/snow driving? Secondly should I consider an automatic or manual for daily driving in snow as well.Thanks

    • @BrianMakse
      @BrianMakse  3 роки тому +2

      Great questions. If you’re dailying in winter conditions, then you’ll want the limited slip. You’ll simply have better traction in those low grip conditions. With the base, open diff, you’ll have one wheel spinning on snow and ice, etc. Manual or auto doesn’t matter in winter, but the car is SO GOOD with the manual, you have to get it!

    • @mikeb9569
      @mikeb9569 3 роки тому

      LSD limited the torque steer possible on slick roads, kept me straight and true. Drove through 3 winters on X-ice winter tires with no issues and was doing circles around SUVs equipped with all seasons. Stay away from studs, you want soft tires in the cold, and with studded tires the rubber is harder (to hold the studs) and most of the time the roads are well plowed, just cold. The MX5 will make you a better driver and as your talent grows, at some point you will wish you had a manual with an LSD. I don't believe the auto is available with an LSD.

I would love to be driving them now, but I can't bring myself to subjecting them to road salt. Both of mine are soft tops. Having owned a 2004 Mazdaspeed MX-5, I'm looking to buy the RF. Almost purely because the looks with the roof up is just my cup of tea. It's April, 2024 as I type this and my biggest issue is finding any 2024 vehicles to test drive. I need to know if the RF a) has such visibility issues (blind spots) that it's a deal breaker, b) whether the top-down experience lacks the "full convertible" feel and c) whether the wind buffeting people talk about with the RF at highway speeds is a deal breaker. Just finding one to test drive is difficult!

    I'm getting an RF because I live in the northwest; 2024 is likely the last manual available, and I plan to keep it forever. I imagine using it as a daily driver for 5 years, taking it out on sunny days, then pulling the cover off when I'm ready to give it to a future kid. I want the waterproofness, the top-notch brakes, the Recaro seats, and ultimately, something that will wow someone when I awaken it from its slumber. The fastback is the clear winner

    It’s winter and it’s an RF. Why not try it with the top closed. It happens to be pretty quiet and it keeps you snug as a bug. The MX5 is pretty stiff without much noticeable cowl shake. It’s a nice stiff body structure but with the RF if you pay attention the car does stiffen further when the top is closed and that’s a nice thing.

      Glad you enjoyed it, Bryan. I've not driven any MX-5 automatics, so it's not fair to comment. Give it a try to be sure. For alternative convertibles, I'll suggest the 2-Series, lovely car.

    • @EjinRenos
      @EjinRenos 3 роки тому

      The automatic isn't that bad but like all autos is a bit sluggish on shifting in manual mode. The MX5 has a much bigger comfort level in cabin than the S2k, so you shouldn't have an issue with fitting. My best suggestion, go test drive.
      If you want a differing var I could suggest the Mercedes SLK, specifically the 2.0T 250 or 300. For a heavy car, its engine and transmission choice pushes its fat and heavy self as quick as the MX5 and S2k with only about 200hp in the 250, and 250 in the 300. The 300 can be tuned to 300hp very quickly and easily making it much faster than the MX5. It's also spacious and luxury comfortable for a roadster, easier to get in and out of. The SLK is now out of production, a mistake by Mercedes surely given it does have a large following, so you'd have to settle for trying to find a last year SLC or a used one.
      Only other roadsters still made is the Boxster and Z4.

  • @danielisbell

    I'm not as sold on the base spec. I think it's fine if you just want a convertible to cruise in, but if you do any hard driving at all, the body roll on the base model is just excessive. I also feel like the LSD is a must have. That said, I'm less sold on the additional parts beyond that. I like the look of my BBS wheels & Brembo brakes, but the difference isn't large enough to justify the extra cost. Had I not found a good deal, I would've bought a trim without them.
    Also, small correction: @4:24 the seats in the model you tested are the normal leather seats (standard in US spec GT, & later US spec Club with BBS/Brembo (non-Recaro) package). The Recaro seats are black Alcantara with leather bolsters.

    I have a 2017 RF GT. I didn't even expect I'd like a Miata because I'm not into convertibles. I thought I'd end up getting a Subaru BRZ, or maybe the Nissan 370z. The availability of the RF made the difference. My only disappointment was that it didn't include a LSD. After auto-xing it a few times and general driving fun I found I don't miss it. About the only time it would really made a difference for me is driving in snow. I have a perfectly fine truck with 4wd, so that is a non-issue. My fuel economy is approximately 35mpg. I will be keeping this car for a long time. I'm not tempted to trade for a newer Miata or even for any other car. I have seen a few reviews of the new 2022 Subaru BRZ, so I will have to give that a test when they become available. No, not trading the Miata for it. Gonna do it right and save up the cash for a sizable down payment, and work with my bank to set up the loan ahead of time. This's is I buy it. I have 2 vehicles and only me. A third vehicle may seem excessive. Unfortunately I have a number of other things going on so I may not even get around to taking one for a ride.

    Great review. I live in NH, so we have winter and I daily drive my RF. You seem to be missing the benefit of the RF, you can put the top up, take your coat off and it is nicer than the ST inside. The whole, it turns into a coupe thing with an insulated hard roof and heated mirrors for winter. Just watching you drive made me cold. My RF hasn't had the roof down in months, because I don't lower it below 55-60 degrees. In the summer, it is down most of the time. Personally think the RF looks better too.

It just feels quieter and more composed, particularly on long, interstate highway drives. The extra weight? Don’t feel it at all. Buffeting?? Nope. And the best part? Brian....when i was a kid, i wanted a motorcycle.
    heck...i STILL want a motorcycle!!!
    my mother, a specialty nurse, dragged me to the hospital to see a guy all taped up from an accident.
    she didn't convince me.
    so I fell a few times...convincing myself this was not the perfect way to enjoy the road.
    at least not around places where people are given driving licenses yet cannot drive.
    as I grew older, I realized I CAN enjoy the motorcycle joy of driving in the wind...the convertible.
    although today I still remember the odd joy of that massive pontiac Bonneville convertible i drove around in...a smaller rag top is still the motorcycle for people who want to live in wind and sun.
    and the miata is the modern-day triumph or MG, WITHOUT the constant electrical goblins and gremlins.
    and the BASE cars are the perfect, everyday motorcycle. and IMO, leave out the electronics that are going to look like cassette and DVD players in the years your car is handed down to another.
    now, as you get older, the driving of the roadster is more difficult.
    and twisting my left knee while getting once, I decided to approach 70 was a bad time for roadsters.
    against your advice, I traded in my GXP for a 2008 135i...and although I am not in the adult go-cart, I can get in and out and carry all my tennis gear every day.

    You call it a “cold weather test,” a scenario where the RF would, arguably, be better than the soft top. Yet there’s no snow, no ice, no winter storm, not even some Nor’easter-like gale force winds & rain! (I know, not your fault.) What’s worse, you don’t even drive with the more insulated, more secure (and more quiet) top up! Folks who prefer the RF tend to drive with the cabin closed - turning it into a cozy coupe - more than ST owners, yet there you are with the top down for the entire test! We get it; you like the ST better - if you said it once, you said it half a dozen times. But in this “winter test,” you neglected to drive the RF the way most RF drivers drive it, with the top up. The RF is my fourth MX-5. The three previous Miatas were all soft tops and you know what? For cold weather, for snow, for heavy storms (and for long range interstate travel), the RF is simply… better. Having owned three soft tops over a period of 13 years, I oughta know. This test is tantamount to me taking an RF with the top UP to sunny Santa Monica and bellyaching about how I’m not getting that wonderful, open air, California experience. Honestly, now!
