    She Talks To Angels” is a biographical sketch of a woman dealing with heroin addiction. The lyrics focus on the dark grip the woman’s addiction has over her while also humanizing her as a unique individual with a past, emotions, and a grim future. A lot of tragic euphemisms are used to reference her fate, which the narrator believes is death. According to Chris Robinson (who wrote this song alongside Rich Robinson), the lyrics are based on a woman he knew in Atlanta. She presented herself in a dark style and wore dark makeup, and was a heroin addict herself. Robinson “made up” a story about this woman’s life and her trajectory as the impetus for the lyrics.

      100% this. Also I believe it also implies that perhaps she lost a son? (the lock of hair). The pain comes when the needle hits, but there is a smile knowing the feeling that it will bring.

      From Song Facts:
      During VH1's The Black Crowes Storytellers, filmed at The Bottom Line in New York City on August 27, 1996, lead singer Chris Robinson explained that this song is not about one person, but rather a "hot dog" (as he put it) of people that they knew from the Atlanta club scene in their early days. "Not all the best parts" explained Chris, "or the best parts for you."
      Chris says there was always a girl in the club scene back then with really dark makeup (like Siouxsie And The Banshees), and after thinking about her one day, he scribbled the lyric "she paints her eyes as black as night." He then went on to write an entire biography (completely made up, by the way) about her in the form of the song that then became "She Talks to Angels."

    Myself, being a drug user in recovery, for over 7 years. I've known quite a few heroin addicts. I feel the lyrics of She Talks to Angels are about those who lost their lives as well as her pleas to find a sober life. "The cross around her neck is from someone she has not met, not yet" is about Jesus. At least that's how I interpret it. Families tend to be pushed away from those battling addiction. Many also, even tho they love and care for their loved ones aren't able to be in their lives due to the complications that ensue from addiction such as lying and stealing and watching them slowly kill themselves and turn into someone their loved ones no longer recognize.
    "The locket of hair in her pocket is from a little boy" I interpreted to be the trauma that ignited the addiction. Whether it be a sibling, or an offspring, or a childhood friend. It was the trigger and why she turned to this life. She feels an abundance of guilt or sadness and is so overcome by grief she turned to substance use to help numb the pain.
    The sunglasses part of the lyric is literal, not metaphorical. The last thing people who use want is to make eye contact. Pupils are heavily dilated, bloodshot, and have black circles under their eyes.
    This was my cousins' and mine, favorite song when we were teenagers and she passed away at 15 in a car accident.
    Then after I started using recreational substances in my adult life and became acquainted with those battling heroin and many losing that battle, this song had an even deeper meaning to me. It reminds me of those who lost their way. That they aren't bad people. Even tho they are battling their demons, daily they hope and pray for the day they can find sobriety and be successful in their recovery.

    There is only one Reactor that refuses to react to covers before reacting the the original. This is a prime example as to why this is so important and, song/artist knowledge is important as well. Reactors are quick to focus on YT Cover Artists such as Home Free and Jordan thus, completely missing the magic and brilliance of this music.
    And, it’s absolutely Deflating when reactor’s have no clue to the Artist & Song Facts. Although, we Subs take the time to educate in comments.

    • @BenWillyums
      @BenWillyums Рік тому +3

    The song is about an addict. Addicts don’t have traditional families. Pulls the shades down and when the pain comes she is shooting up. The lock of hair could be for a kid. Addicts often have kids but are usually not allowed to keep them. The cross is for god, or the angles. She talks to angels means she is close to death. They call her out by her name. They are waiting for her.

    Those in the fight every day against these mortal fights, please know I love you, God loves you. He alone rescued me from drinking, I now find myself trapped again by anti anxiety med that starts with x. This too shall be defeated by my creator. I’m mad at me that I let this thing sneak into my life yet again. It’s always gradual until it’s sudden is it not? Big hug and love to you all. Hey Britt, I still see you, I still see all the work you are putting in. You have become my number 1 in the reactor field, NOT a easy achievement as I listen intently to what the spirit of the person before me set the table with. I feel privileged to get to watch your quest for truth via music, it has and will continue to serve you well. Can you feel it? Humanity is coming together, I am what ever label you wish to define me as but the fact that I look forward to each of your reactions is proof enough to me that humanity is waking up and grabbing the wheel if this big ship. We might scrape the reef or rocks but I think we are going to avoid ripping our hull open beyond hope. I am much more open to hear all sides of all points of view and with respect either agree or disagree but always done from love and with respect. I give what I get, so don’t get it twisted, I can and will teach life is not a video game if I need to but my preferred path is of love and teaching. Keep doing what you are doing beautiful soul, you are on the path to success. Keep keeping it real and from the heart, it’s a winner. Stay in the fight for good my friends.

    The song’s lyrics were penned by Chris Robinson, the lead singer and lyricist of The Black Crowes. He wrote it after a chance encounter with a woman in Atlanta who told him about her brother’s struggles with drug addiction. The woman said her brother had died from an overdose, and she used to think he was talking to angels. While this encounter inspired the song’s title, the lyrics are a culmination of Robinson’s own experiences with drugs and alcohol. This is a song about an overdose. The girl in the song is young -- still lives with her family, even though it's apparently dysfunctional -- she uses (heroin, sounds like) -- the lock of little boy's hair might be from a deceased sibling or her own child, or maybe it's just a random lock of hair that she fantasizes about -- and the cross bears someone she hasn't met yet ... not yet. Yes, she talks to angels. And hopefully they take her where she'll meet that man on the cross, and the pain will finally go away.

    Yes, I believe you must be correct. They cut a verse for the "official video", because there are the "full" versions out there with that verse intact. Perhaps they cut it to simply save time on the official video?

    Powerful song about addiction breaking a young woman's life, and feels like a major flip from their normal energetic sound. I think the lock of hair is from a son she had to give up because she can't get clean, and the cross is Jesus, but she doesn't know Him. It could even be that Chris, or the protagonist in the story, is her lover, struggling with the fact that he's in love with someone who can't get out of that life.

    Yeah, the reason that a verse or two is cut out was for time to make it MTV friendly, to fill a 3 and a half to 4 minute window. In terms of the meaning of the actual lyric, She Talks to Angels, I'll disagree with many other commenters. I don't believe that specific line has anything to do with death. I think it refers to the euphoria while she's feeling the high. Other lines in the song, such as She keeps a lock of hair in her pocket, wears a cross around her neck, and She'll tell you she's an orphan after you meet her family, refer to the desperation after she's come down.
