1983 Def Leppard exploded on to the scene with their Pyromania album. In 1984, the drummer lost his arm in a car crash. The band waited for him to learn how to play with 1 arm and his 2 feet and put out their biggest Album, Hysteria in 1987….he still plays the drums for Def Leppard and they are touring this year and it is amazing and Def Leppard rocks !!
The original version has original guitarist Pete Willis playing. It is MUCH better than this version. I preferred the harder edged version of DefLeppard, that existed when he was still in the band.
Completely disagree, this is a perfect interpretation for a live version. The buildup is immaculate. The record version has been out for quite sometime so everyone was familiar with it. This was their way of puttin a twist on it and it works beautifully. Edit: the reason this is a perfect live version is due to how they worked the crowd.
In 1984 the drummer got in a car accident suffering several injuries including the loss of his arm. The band took a break and waited for him to recover and they also waited for him to learn how to play the drums with his right arm and his left foot. If u notice in the video half of the drum set is made for his left foot while the rest of the set is a regular drum set .. the reason why the crowd was going crazy at the beginning was because that was their first concert after the drummer had the car accident so it had been a little while since.
You should really look up a documentary video on Rick Allen losing his arm and learning to play the drums again after. Its an inspirational story for sure!
I saw this concert about 5 tour stops prior to this being filmed. The energy was through the roof and to this day, it’s the best show I’ve ever seen. The band didn’t know if they would ever be able to play live again when Rick lost his arm. Not only could they play, they were the biggest touring band of the era. They were so excited to be on stage together and they all were at the top of their game. Check out Too Late For Love or any other track from this show.
Def Leppard’s drummer, Rick Allen, was in a car crash on New Year’s Day 1984. Allen lost his left arm in this crash. Doctors were able to reattach it; but when they did they discovered infections in his arm that led to having his arm amputated. While recuperating after the accident, Allen looked into ways to try and play the drums. He discovered a system that could enable him to play like he could before. What he currently uses is a series of foot pedals geared for his left leg. Through hard work, dedication, and training, he was able to master this system properly and could easily play with his left leg what he used to do with his left arm. This was filmed in 1988; during their Hysteria tour.
To give a sense of the band's relationship, Joe Elliott said in an interview, like only a true brother could, that one of the benefits of Rick's accident was that he finally had to stop playing endlessly long drum fills they were always on him about. Drum technology was at the point where electronic drum kits, drum triggers and sampling were coming into use. While he was recuperating from his surgery, in his hospital bed, he would practice playing some of the songs by tapping his foot against the foot of his hospital bed. Once he had realized that he could do it, he had someone contact SImmons Drums, who had been selling electronic drum kits for a few years, to help design a new kit, so that he could play the snare parts with his left foot. They basically created two kits, one to play by hand and another to play by foot.
@@robertkennedy5414 In that same interview Joe also said the band has persevered through so much they almost quit. They played on, "...if Phil locks his keys in the car again we're done."
Rick was lucky to find a woman who recognized he had ptsd and helped him through it. She’s got a voice he plays drums for her at times. He has a lot of great artwork too. I like how they help other artists with problems.
Rick 'Thunder God" Allen, a drummer so powerful, the Universe itself had to nerf him. Immediately after his accident, the rest of the band got together to discuss what they were going to do, but at no point was asking him to leave suggested. Def Leppard has been a rock-solid brotherhood since day one.
Up through their Pyromania album (1984?) drummer Rick Allen has both arms. Shortly thereafter, he lost one arm in a car accident. He learned to play with one arm (and additional foot pedals) and the band released the album Hysteria in, I think 1987. This is definitely a tamer version of the song than the album version. Although the album starts slow, it doesn’t use an acoustic, and the real “drop” occurs where the pause is in this video. The crowd was expecting it, but it was just a tease.
After Rick Allen's accident, Def Leppard also lost their producer, Mutt Lange, two other projects. They agreed to wait for him. By the time he could come back to help them with the album, the costs had run up so much that they were told they would have to sell 5 million copies to break even. They sold 20 million!
Mutt is an amazing producer. He married Shania Twain and worked with/on a lot of her songs. Unfortunately, he ended up cheating on her. Which seems from the outside one the dumbest thing anyone could do.
Rick had finished his drum tracks before the accident happened, and the band was understandably more focused on Rick and his recovery. Due to the amputation, Mutt had to leave because he had committed to producing other records, and the band had so much success on the previous two albums, they didn't want to bring in someone else. By the time Mutt was free to re-join and finish the album, Rick had started working on his electronic kit with Simmons Drums. The only way they were going to replace Rick in the band was if he couldn't play live anymore. And the rest…
@@robertkennedy5414 The songs for Hysteria weren't even written before Rick lost his arm. Besides Mutt programed the drum parts just as he had done on Pyromania using the Linndrum, Simmons drums and the Fairlight with various custom samples. Rick only overdubbed cymbals on Pyromania.
@@lancelathrop2255 if there were no songs written, what did they record with Jim Steinman? Why did they have to pay his contract off before they could bring in someone else? They never used anything from those sessions, obviously, and a couple of months after they settled with Steinman, Rick had his accident.
Flipped his corvette on a country road, flew through the sunroof, with the seat belt slicing off his arm...a nurse happened to be driving by and helped save his life.....doctors tried to reattach and althoguh they initially believed it had worked, did not take...almost lost the other arm to infection as well...in hospital, he came up with the concept to play with his feet to compensate for the arm...the band waited it out for him like a true family...and the Thunder God as he's known became legendary
The drummer, Rick Allen, lost his arm in a car accident shortly after the band released their big breakthrough album, "Pyromania." Even though the band was under tremendous pressure from their record company (to get another album out), as well as heavy financial pressure, they stuck by Rick and refused to replace him. Rick told them he was going to play again and that was good enough. The band waited over a year for Rick to recover and develop a special customized drum kit that he could play using 1 arm. It was worth the wait. Their next album, Hysteria, was the biggest one of their career and sold over 20 million copies.
Yes it does. This was underwhelming. Though I'm also in the camp that thinks their first 3 albums are great, and everything after that is not worth a listen.

I just saw Def Leppard for the first time a few years ago. And yes, the drummer 🥁 was on fire 🔥 he’s an amazing drummer! I think I’ve seen videos of him saying after his car accident (many years ago, you can look it up online, I’m sure) , I heard he designed his own drum kit to have the sound of “two arms” playing the beat. He truly is amazing ❤
He relearned, and helped develop the first versions of electric drum kits so that he could use his feet to play things his other arm used to play. Absolutely incredible story. And if I could ever time travel I would go back to watch def leppard in the round in 1987
Def Leppard is a band from late 70s, they still hold different concept of a band than what today's band with 1 diva leader. It used to be members hold of the his/her band lile a family. Steve Clark (the blonde guitarist) died in an accident and it took several years for Def Leppard to replace him with Vivian Campbell. The drummer was in an accident and lost his arm. He struggled to relearn everything he knew how to drum and created a new set of drum he can play. By the way, he was one of the best drummers in the world before his accident. Vivian Campbell had cancer, the band waited until he recovered before releasing new album and went on tour. Def Leppard has full control over the rights to their songs, produces their own albums and manage their live tour. Big record labels don't have any power over them. That's why Taylor Swift who toured with them for CMT (cross over live sessions) learn how to take over her songs from big record labels and greedy managers. FYI: Def Leppard'w album Hysteria was the first album which ever beat Michael Jackson's by number of records sold. The album was produced in partnership with RJ "Mutt" Lange, who later made Shania Twain an icon (also married her).
I love both versions of this song, the original is awesome. This version just gives it a new feel. The intro is just amazing, as well as the slow vocal.
Look at you just rockin' out with Def Leopard ...you go girl ...these guys are friends for life and living their dream...the drummer started really young with the band he had his 16 birthday when they were opening for Ac-Dc....great reaction...Karl from eastern Canada ❤❤❤👍👍👍
Ty for the stroll down memory lane.1988,I was 17.parents let me drive from Wisconsin to Kansas to pick up a few friends and go to this concert in denver. those were the days. Checkout out Rock of Ages by them. Live from denver. Great reaction!
They still do something similar on the current tour. They do a handful of acoustic songs (this guitar, two steps behind) then used this song to transition back into electric.
In 1988 I was a senior in high school and I listened to the Hysteria album cassette tape so much I actually wore it out! Yeah, they are my fave! Hands down! ♡
2 videos and the entire concert filmed in Denver, Colorado baby! My first concert ever at 10 years old and they've been my favorite since! Taking my sons to the Def Leppard and Journey show this Sunday! Going to be epic!
Saw them live on the Pyromania Tour but first became aware of them when they released "High 'n' Dry". I saw them a few years ago with my son and when they played this song the went right into "Switch 625", like they do on the album and we turned to each other and in unison said "No way!" Love them!!!
the drummer lost his arm after he was famous as a drummer in the band in a car wreck. his mates stuck with him while they designed a drum set he could perform with after he healed
The first time I saw Def Leppard was when Rick Allen came back after his accident. He did an awesome drum solo that was the best I have ever witness even to this day. I have seen them 7 times. One of my favorite bands ever!
You need to watch that whole concert , just type in Def Leppard live & it will be the one from 1988 & the concert is called in the round in your face . The reason it's called in the round is because they had a round stage built before they started this tour .
Britt your facial reactions are priceless!!! Keep it going girl. Love the hat BTW - I was born in Los Angeles way back when not all of the "freeways" were in place yet. Not the 405, or 110 or 105, or 91. You may have to look up those when you get a chance.
their original version from their High and Dry album was my introduction to Def Leppard. In fact, it was the day of the debut of Bringing On The Heartbreak video on MTV when I was 17 years old, going through what all teenagers go through at that time in life, and Joe Elliot just sang that song straight into my heart! I've been a fan ever since! Bringing On The Heartbreak was one of the songs in their early career that helped get them where they are now. but to really understand all the audience's hype about this song, you need to watch the original video from 1982, before Rick Allen lost his arm in that horrific car accident: ua-cam.com/video/f_X5A-BYjO8/v-deo.html&pp=ygUmYnJpbmdpbmcgb24gdGhlIGhlYXJ0YnJlYWsgZGVmIGxlcHBhcmQ%3D
Joe Elliot always introduces and acknowledges each band member at some point during their concerts. Of course it’s not even necessary since everyone know all of them by now. But it still reminds how close they are. A rock band who never split apart, had feuds, and stuck together through some hard times… for decades. Pretty crazy.
Rick Allen initially lost his arm in a car accident but doctors were able to reattach it. However he developed an infection that threatened the other arm as well and the decision was made to remove it. He spent hundreds of hours learning to play drums with his feet and as he comically stated “you can really consult the book of one armed drummers”. When the band were working up to their Hysteria tour they booked several small clubs to see how Rick would do. They had a stand by drummer scheduled for the mini tour but he missed the first gig in Dublin, Ireland and Rick went on and never missed a beat! In my opinion Rick Allen is the greatest drummer alive!
Ric Allen is the drummer. He lost his arm in an auto accident 1983, i think. After pyromania album. The band waited for him to recover. He learned to play with one arm, and several more foot peddals to compensate. He is amazing! Nick name: Thunder God. 🙂
Phil Collen, and Steven Clark ... the two guitar players for Leppard... were known for their drinking and substance issues... mostly drinking... but they were an incomparable duo on instruments ... The terror Twins... was the tongue in cheek nickname for the two
also.. this whole band had been mates.. friends... for a LONG time.. and Joe was never a self-centered guy... he leaned on the band and wanted everyone to be amazing
Rick Allen drummer since 1978 lost arm in an accident in 1984 or 1985. His band mates postponed their tour so he could recover and relearn to play with one arm.
You need to watch the drummer's feet! A lot of what he is doing is done with his feet and what he would typically do with his feet he's doing with his arms he flip-flopped it. It's so cool to see in concert.
Rick Allen, the drummer, lost his arm in a car accident. He not only found a way to continue doing what he loves, playing drums, he is also an Artist!! He is an Amazing Man!! He is truly an Inspiration!! Sadly, we lost Steve Clark. He was such a Huge Talent!!! He is sorely missed and never forgotten. RIP Steve.
If you ever get the chance to see the movie called “Hysteria: The Def Leppard Story”, you’ll see how Mutt Lang encouraged Joe Elliot to open his vocal range while recording this song. It completely changed their future and they took the world by storm.
Oh, you’ll also see how Rick Allen the drummer struggled with his accident and then developed his own electronic kit so he could learn to drum with both feet.
Wow, I’ve never seen this performance…thanks for sharing Britt! Def Leppard is on of my favorite 80s rock bands, much better than many give them credit for. A hard rockin bunch of fellows who are great musicians. (I really became a big fan after what happened to Rick, the way his mates stood by him…not many would wait like that.)
Still have the cassette tape in the car, but im sure its all melted. I listen to the cd, still. Brings me back to high school. Oh yeah need to look for my DL shirt
If that guitar intro made you feel like you're ready to pass out, you need to listen to Roy Clark's "Malaguena". If it had strings, Roy could make it sing.
Oh girl, Def Leppard played Sat. night in Truist Park Atlant to about 40,000 people. They were incredible and have been rockin for 40 years. Journey played before them, also amazing. So many great shows in Atlanta right now. You need to be going to some of them. They ain't getting any younger. You missed Heart last month. A 10 out of 10 show.
he crashed his ferrari in a feild in the UK I believe and lost his arm in the crash and was awake to see it how terrifying would that have been ... makes you not want to drive fast anymore thats for sure Ive been Real lucky I have done some really stupid things in fast cars when I was younger .

I saw Def Leppard live in concert and they were awesome 👌
Phil is one of the most Under-rated Players ever! RIP Steve Clark!
I saw them in concert in the 80s they were phenomenal!!
Saw them live on the Pyromania Tour but first became aware of them when they released "High 'n' Dry". I saw them a few years ago with my son and when they played this song the went right into "Switch 625", like they do on the album and we turned to each other and in unison said "No way!" Love them!!!
Need to go back to their first album for the song Rock Brigade from 1980.
Interesting live version, but the studio version is better.
the drummer lost his arm after he was famous as a drummer in the band in a car wreck. his mates stuck with him while they designed a drum set he could perform with after he healed
Big respect for his band mates for doing that, most famous bands would never have done that.
RIP Steve Clark. You should check out the Tesla (band…not the genius or the car) tribute song to Steve “Song and emotion”.
The first time I saw Def Leppard was when Rick Allen came back after his accident. He did an awesome drum solo that was the best I have ever witness even to this day. I have seen them 7 times. One of my favorite bands ever!
The 80s everything was cropped. Tees, blouses, workout wear, jackets. Bolero jackets made a comeback, I had one in white leather.
I was very fortunate to grow up in the 80's. My favorite bands were Def Leppard and Bon Jovi but as you know there were so many great bands then.
Nice I left the comment for you to react to this. I’m so happy you’re doing this. You have to do photograph also.
Thanks for the idea!
As an 80s teenager I love this selection ❤.
You need to watch that whole concert , just type in Def Leppard live & it will be the one from 1988 & the concert is called in the round in your face . The reason it's called in the round is because they had a round stage built before they started this tour .
Some of the all time best legends
Saw them in 1983, big Def Leppard Fan!
I was at this tour when they came to Pittsburgh, Pa...the stage was in the middle and Tesla opened up. Good times...
Britt your facial reactions are priceless!!! Keep it going girl. Love the hat BTW - I was born in Los Angeles way back when not all of the "freeways" were in place yet. Not the 405, or 110 or 105, or 91. You may have to look up those when you get a chance.
Thank you so much!!
their original version from their High and Dry album was my introduction to Def Leppard. In fact, it was the day of the debut of Bringing On The Heartbreak video on MTV when I was 17 years old, going through what all teenagers go through at that time in life, and Joe Elliot just sang that song straight into my heart! I've been a fan ever since!
Bringing On The Heartbreak was one of the songs in their early career that helped get them where they are now. but to really understand all the audience's hype about this song, you need to watch the original video from 1982, before Rick Allen lost his arm in that horrific car accident:
ua-cam.com/video/f_X5A-BYjO8/v-deo.html&pp=ygUmYnJpbmdpbmcgb24gdGhlIGhlYXJ0YnJlYWsgZGVmIGxlcHBhcmQ%3D
Saw Def in a pub in Sheffield with about 70 other people, they were giving their first ever single away , come a long way since them 🤘❤️
Joe Elliot always introduces and acknowledges each band member at some point during their concerts.
Photograph is one of the better known songs.
Rick Allen drummer since 1978 lost arm in an accident in 1984 or 1985. His band mates postponed their tour so he could recover and relearn to play with one arm.
You should watch a documentary on them...interesting story from beginning to now.
The drummers moms made his get up n back into the life again.... I miss Steven Clark ❤😢😢RIP
You did notice his missing left arm when you saw Love Bites, yes
You need to watch the drummer's feet! A lot of what he is doing is done with his feet and what he would typically do with his feet he's doing with his arms he flip-flopped it. It's so cool to see in concert.
I like the pauses because they recognize the audience, and they get to part of the show. Instead of just cheering . It is an audience solo.
Try out "Die Hard the Hunter" from the same {In the round, in your face} concert from 1988.. stellar show back then!
You need to watch a recent concert video of that same some with Switch 625 added to it. Very awesome guitar solo.
Yes please try some recorded versions of songs
Rick Allen, the drummer, lost his arm in a car accident. He not only found a way to continue doing what he loves, playing drums, he is also an Artist!! He is an Amazing Man!! He is truly an Inspiration!!
Sadly, we lost Steve Clark. He was such a Huge Talent!!! He is sorely missed and never forgotten. RIP Steve.
Great version of a great song.
Rock on!
This is from the video "In The Round In Your Face". Recorded from three concerts in Denver & two shows from Atlanta during 1988.
Love your videos
Still have the cassette tape in the car, but im sure its all melted. I listen to the cd, still. Brings me back to high school. Oh yeah need to look for my DL shirt
They just came to atl last week
Awesome reaction you should check out “too late for love” live in 1988 by them
Awesome performance!! 😅
Thank you! 😄
If that guitar intro made you feel like you're ready to pass out, you need to listen to Roy Clark's "Malaguena". If it had strings, Roy could make it sing.
Love early Def! - Love the earlier version - this ?
You should Definitely check out the album "High "N" Dry".. Every Song is a Banger!! IMHO...😎💯🤘
Studio versions are always a lot better than live versions
You should check out Cheap Trick. Rick Neilson, who plays guitars ranging from 1 neck to a 40-string 6 neck guitar called "The Beast".
In the round 1988 Rick Allen back on drums the thunder god also Steve Clark last time he would die in 1990 rip
This song is fantastic - but PLEASE do a re-reaction to the studio version.
Great song and concert!! Btw you better get a Yankee cap and trash that LA hat when you are in New York! Great reaction!! Thank!!
Car crash, Gene Simmons from Kiss helped design drum set after he healed.
Joe Eliiot can really vocal Steve Clark passed away what a band this version listen it in audio version
Studio version
the song is about Marilyn Monroe
he crashed his ferrari in a feild in the UK I believe and lost his arm in the crash and was awake to see it how terrifying would that have been ... makes you not want to drive fast anymore thats for sure Ive been Real lucky I have done some really stupid things in fast cars when I was younger .
Just subscribed to your channel, love you reactions, you make me laugh, always, you should look up the hardrock danish band called volbeat, the song '' shotgun blues '' is awesome, the singer has a killer voice
