I find it truly amazing that not only was a young EVH practicing hours upon hours on end to become one of the greatest guitarist of all time......but in the middle of that, he was working on his tone. Steve Vai said in an interview recently that when he first heard VH1, that was what really blew his mind - the tone.
@@rubenreza I beg to differ. One of my favorite guitar players from that time period is Michael Schenker. He had a pretty distinctive tone himself. Although, UFO wasn't as well known as VH or Boston, Schenker's guitar playing ranks right up there with those guys. Listen to a 19 year old Michael Schenker playing "Oh My" from the 1974 album "Phenomenon" or "Lights Out" from the live album "Strangers In The Night" and you'll see what I mean. I liked your video though. I've been trying to emulate Ed's tone with my Digitech RP355 and I just can't get it right. I've been watching videos like this trying to get tips on adjusting my settings. Thanks for the vid.
@@michaelj3959 I don't know. This is all subjective. I love Michael Schenker, great guitar player. However, his TONE was never that great. Listen to anything that came out the same year as VH & you'll see the difference in tone.

Ruben you are a Master of Guitar ! You truly got what Eddie Van Halen did and accomplished with his Guitar !!! You Sir can play anything you want to and play it Amazing !!! Love your Videos ! Thanks Ruben !!!❤
Ruben ,Sir, you are the Best Choice to sit in with Sammy ,Micheal , and Alex ,or Jason , whither they are playing Concerts , Recording New Music , or Playing the Much Talked About ,Possible Upcoming Van Halen Trubute to Eddie !! You Sir ,can play " Circles " 🔵 around the lead guitarist they have now ,whose name is Vic . I watched some videos of Sammy and the " Circle " play some Van Halen Songs recently ,where Micheal done the lead vocals of a particular song off of Van Halen 1 . Micheal singing wasn't too shabby , better than Sammy's on the particular song ,because Sammy can't hit the highs like he used to , but Vic's cover guitar of the song ,just made the whole effort of the band covering a song off of the Original first album of Van Halen , quiet heartbreaking 💔 You Sir can play any Eddie Van Halen Guitar ,to any Van Halen song ,🎵 Note for Note , unlike Vic's limited guitar capability. With the possibility of All Three Former Vocalists of Van Halen to perform in the "Tribute to Eddie Van Halen" , You Sir, "Ruben Reza" are the " One " to recreate ,and perform these songs that we so love and cherish , grew up on , and still love and connect with Eddie from. I'm sure if Alex ever heard you play , He would insist ,having you play the majority of the songs He would choose for the " Tribute" . It's very clear to me that you should be Hooked Up with Alex Van Halen and just see what might transpire.... I hope I haven't stepped over my boundaries being so forthcoming, but I just want at least ,one more chance to experience the same great feelings of so many Great years and great songs and see "Eddie Van Halen " properly represented by a fellow lifelong admirer and Guitar Great as yourself !!! Nothing ventured ,nothing gained ? PS Thanks Ruben for the comments and the link you sent me ! I'm thoroughly enjoying every bit of it !!! Much Appreciated my friend !!!❤ Keep the Videos coming !!! They are Great !!
Just seeing this one now Ruben. Really cool vid. Amazing and innovative job with this gear, and as always.... you play great. In fact, you are an amazing player. Incredible tonal characteristics and control. I also really like how you broke it down near the end.... and added each effect in there, one at a time, so we could hear what each did in the chain. Keep on rockin' Brother!
Thanks for watching the video! I honestly don’t remember the settings ‘cause this was so long ago and I change settings all the time based on what I’m needing at the moment. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help but if you have a CC delay, you should be able to dial the settings in based on what you hear in the video. Thanks again!
Wonderful video Ruben - very useful information - I'll give it a try .Whats the unusual invertion you use on the clean picked chords at the beginning of Hear about it later - its the one at the 5th fret ( I learnt playing holding string 6,5 & 4 at 5th fret and g string at 2nd fret - swine of a stretch).
This really sounds great! Nice job 👍🏻 I too have the 5150 OD and the Micro Flanger. I notice that you are running the flanger after the 5150 and it really sounds spot on. I have my flanger before the 5150 because when I ran it after the volume jump when I engaged the flanger was quite substantial. Do you experience the same running it this way? Thanks 😊
Thanks! Yes, I got that volume jump as well. I actually bounce between before and after; lately I’ve been running it before. Thanks for watching and please subscribe!
Just subscribed 👍🏻 I guess it’s a compromise. After it seems like the effect is more pronounced, before you get less of the volume jump 🤷🏻♂️. I’d like to get my hands on the EVH flanger and see if there’s any difference there.
@@Bob1Gee Thanks for subscribing! You will get the volume jump on that one too. Same if you ran a chorus after the preamp - just the nature of the beast.
Cool, thank you... My only comment would be that people who want to copy the skateboard idea, might want to ensure the stomp buttons of the outer pedals (delay and phaser) are slightly inside (between) the axle centres of the skateboard trucks. Otherwise an over excited ‘stomp’ might make the other end of the board pop up... Possibly pulling out leads, or worse.
Thanks! I had a Pinnacle Deluxe once, I just couldn’t bond with it. I can go from rockabilly to thrash with the 5150 OD easily. Please Like my video and subscribe to my channel. Thanks again!
@@proixy1400 The way it was told to me. On the stripe design on the OVERDRIVE here and the white EVH flanger, stripes intersect on each knob. If you set the knob at the intersection, that is EVHs’ own setting. However, that is only what I heard, I do not know if that is true. But, it seems plausible
I love it. I'm gonna get a 5150 OD after wsatching this. I have the EVH stripes as part of my right sleeve. artist messed up and did the black lines on top... I was so mad.. lmao
I would love your opinion on where you would put a Chorus, Octave, line selector and a Wah in addition to your setup? Let's assume that you had plenty of room to add them.
Chorus at the end, before delay and reverb. Wah is subjective. Most of the time it goes up front but I’ve actually used it after distortion on rare occasion ‘cause I liked the dirty wah sound. Octave up front ‘cause you want a clean octave happening. Not sure exactly what you mean by line selector - A/B box?
@fastguitar It might be inspired-by the sound of the EP-3 pre-amp, but it sounds nothing like an EP-3 pre-amp with a TIS48 transistor. It’s a nice, dark booster, but the name is misleading.
Thanks for uploading! If you have a second, we recorded an Eddie Van Halen tribute video. As fellow music fans, we'd love if you'd check it out. It's on our channel. Don't go too hard on us :)
He also had the advantage of pro studio rack equipment to get all of his iconic sounds (flanger, chorus, phaser, etc.) which was a big part of his tone. You are absolutely right his sound was in his hands. 100%. Us regular folks have to rely on pedals to achieve those sounds that are not built into valve amps. I guess you can always get a solid state digital amp with everything built in. You would be surprised he did use some pedals performing live. Anyway it's all part of his amazing brown sound.

This guy in another vid says the intro to ATBL was the phaser, not flanger
Intro = flanger, solo = phase 90
Why don’t they advertise it as a preamp? People are using it them in front of an amp which is a clear recipe for disaster.
