To be precise the Dragon Ball anime came out in 1986 and Z came out in 1989. If its a sports anime you want then I will never stop recommending Slam Dunk. Sure its pretty dated being an early 90s anime but anyone and everyone will tell you that its an absolute classic

Not only that, Miyazaki's first big outings as a director was when he was asked to take over the 2nd half of the first Lupin III TV series (1971). Miyazaki's take with Lupin as a more goofy character perpetuated into the 2nd series (1977) (also making Fujiko a little bit more of an rival instead of only a pretty damsel in distress) and was cemented as a gold standard for the franchise when Miyazakí's first feature length film cam out in 1979: Lupin III Castle of Cagliostro.

Gundam is an interesting case. It was definitely not the most popular anime of 1979. The original Gundam didn't hit it big until later, when the rebroadcast got higher ratings than the original run, and the compilation films made bank at the box office. What really kept Gundam going in the early years was that it achieved its primary objective of selling model kits. Back in the day, model kit sales were how mecha anime made money for their investors...and why they kept on making mecha anime.

    • @Tuning3434
      @Tuning3434 Місяць тому +1

Indeed, the compilation movies (1981, 1981 & 1982) fell on fertile soil (and are good movies on it's own: cutting a lot of the production mess of the TV series away for a shorter but clearer story & theme). It really hit big when Tomino came out with 1985's Zeta Gundam.

yeah, mech anime has a long history... also, hell yes, Lupin III is actually fantastic. it's like Scooby Doo with more smoking, drinking, drugs, sex, and violence. but in like a fun way. idk, it's real weird.
anyway! I've been getting into a bit more mech stuff lately, including some Gundam! but also, once again... I cannot recommend Bang Brave Bang Bravern enough! it's such a weird show, but it's also a perfect homage to the genre. the last episode of the season comes out on thursday and I'm already climbing the walls in anticipation.
also, god, if pokemon wasn't 1997, it definitely would've been Revolutionary Girl Utena. in terms of Japanese OP, I actually prefer that song to the pokemon one, even for as formative as pokemon was to me. and man, I don't know if an older anime can win against modern titles in terms of votes, but what. Note: There's a BIG difference between "the most popular anime" openings and the most popular "anime openings". This list seems to be the former.
For example, Sousei no Aquarion (2005) was not a very popular anime, but its opening was HUGE. I'd argue its opening was on par if not better than AIR, which was what this list used for 2005, but AIR was the "most popular anime" of the year because it was the highly anticipated adaptation of a highly popular visual novel from the same VN team that made Clannad, Kanon, Little Busters, Angel Beats, and Charlotte (among others).
In other words, AIR's OP was popular _because_ of AIR's popularity. Aquarion's OP was popular _despite_ Aquarions unpopularity.

    • @dragonbretheren
      @dragonbretheren Місяць тому +7

And for those of you who want to fight me on this, do you really think "Hero's Come Back" (Naruto Shippuden) was a more popular "anime opening" than "Motteke! Sailor Fuku" (Lucky Star) in 2007? You couldn't go 10 minutes in an anime convention from 2007 through 2009 without someone making an "I like sausage" joke. Naruto Shippuden was arguably the "most popular anime" in 2007 because it's the highly anticipated sequel to a super shounen. Super shounen ALWAYS top the anime popularity charts.
Other iconic 2007 openings that are undisputedly more popular openings than "Hero's Come Back" but less popular anime than Naruto Shippuden include: "Guns & Roses" (Baccano), "Allegro Cantabile Sound" (Nodame Cantabile), and "Naraku no Hana" (OP2 of Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni).
Likewise for 2008: Was "Blue Bird" (again, Naruto Shippuden) really a more popular OPENING than: "Tabi no Tochuu" (Spice & Wolf), "Kuso Rumba" (Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei), "Resonance" (Soul Eater), "PSI Missing" (Toaru Majutsu no Index), or "Pure Parade" (Toradora)?

I can agree on "Hero's come back" but "Blue Bird" was insaaanely popular. I'd argue that these years had too many iconic ops to choose from so compromises had to be made.

    • @EdrickV

Can't speak for anyone but myself, but at least for me AIR's opening is what got me to watch that anime years ago, not it's connections to any other anime/manga. The clouds and the opening are pretty much all I remember about it now. As far as Sousei no Aquarion, I've never heard of that before. Only heard of Aquarion Evol, and I've never seen that.
That said, apparently the ranking criteria varies a bit throughout the list, with older stuff being based more on popularity in Japan and newer stuff including things like UA-cam video views, I guess. That's based on a comment made by a person that helped make the list, who acknowledges the list is not perfect.

    • @dragonbretheren
      @dragonbretheren Місяць тому

@@RageKage987 I know you said you're not going to listen to anything I rebut with, but to be fair, I will concede that by raw views, "Hero's Come Back" has 95M views across 17 videos on UA-cam, whereas "Motteke Sailor Fuku has 47M views accross 66+ videos on UA-cam.
So, yes - just by raw views, "Hero's Come Back" has been viewed more. However, if we look into potential skewing factors, 50% of HCB were via official music channels (Sony Music and Crunchyroll Official), which are SIGNIFICANTLY more favored by the algorithm, whereas 0% of MSF's views were official channels. Obviously Sony Music is going to be served to more raw viewers than "Nitoheifeline".
If we look at the types of videos, most of HCB's 17 videos were just raw postings of the song, with only 4 of the 17 being fan covers. This does tell us more people are interested in just re-listening to it as a song compared to MSF, which I will concede is a perfectly fine way to measure popularity.
By contrast, MSF had 52 of its 66 videos that were fan projects (covers, remixes, mashups, animations, live dances, playing on OSU/BeatSaber/Stepmania, etc). Which means more fans were eager to engage and create content with MSF than with HCB, which I would argue is a more relevant metric to the popularity of an OP than algorithm-driven view counts. Note also that I cut off from this count any videos under 1k views, and the uncountable and uncateloguable number of shorts of people dancing to the song.
Additionally, MSF has content continuously spanning the past 16 years, including videos 8 years ago, 6 years ago, 2 years ago, even several created this year. In fact, the only years MSF didn't have some fan video come out with over 100k views is 2017 and 2021. This shows that it has staying power and is still culturally relevant as an OP to this day.
DISCLAIMER: I omitted reaction videos from both counts for HCB and MSF as they are more heavily driven by the corresponding React channel's audience size than people who came specifically to engage with these songs.
HCB's count was cut off once I hit 10 consecutive unrelated videos (indicating that no more videos specifically related to HCB could be found by the algorithm).
MSF's count was cut off once I hit 10 consecutive videos under 1k views (indicating the range that were no longer going to significantly affect the view count, but would quickly inflate the "videos created" count; in good faith, I cut the count here to reduce the impact of my own side's argument).
      In summary:
Hero's Come Back = More overall views
Motteke Sailor Fuku = More fan engagement
Both are perfectly reasonable stances to take to define "most popular song", but I (personally) argue for the latter.

No, not at all. When people talk about what's popular, they're talking about overall popularity unless otherwise specified. Since Japan isn't the only country in the world that consumes anime and the rest of the world has a lot more people, it's not the sole arbitor of what's popular or not. You're giving off major weeaboo vibes by denying reality in the way you're doing.
If we had been talking about business decisions, then sure, japanese anime are typically made with the domestic market in mind. Nobody was talking about that though, in fact nobody was talking about financial success at all besides you. In terms of popularity, popularity is what matters. Again something "the west" or whatever you want to call it has a major impact on, especially given you also have to consider piracy in regions where anime isn't made legally or readily accessible. Weird to look back and remember Gundam started so Transformers-ish. "Core Fighter docks to make Gundam!"
Space Pirate Harlock is by Leiji Matsumoto of Galactic Railroad (same universe) and Space Battleship Yamato (and he had thoughts of making that a shared universe story too).
The creator of Sailor Moon is married to the creator of Hunter x Hunter. He's also quite ill now, sadly. He also did Yu Yu Hakusho before HxH, and it's a writing course in how to do an anime tournament arc.

Back at the 70s and 80s the big two ways of mecha was born, the Real one were it was all about the horrors of war and Super were it was pure hotblooded.

  • @ifrit1937
    @ifrit1937 Місяць тому +4

As for the hate towards SAO it's mostly due to the latter half of Season 1 (the overall tone/setting takes a drastic shift, you'll know when you get to that point...in reality it's more of a season 2 and was Volume 2 or 3 for the light novels). Besides that the whole harem aspect (all the girls going for Kirito which you should've more or less seen the hint of by now) is also a turnoff for most viewers from what I can tell (and most of that stuff is from volumes 3 and or 4 (the episode with silica and investigation episode you uploaded last as of now are not from volume 1 and 2 but instead from volume 3 and 4...the writer wrote them after the first 2 main arcs had finished as side stories but the anime decided to put them into the anime in order of how the events occurred instead so these characters (like Silica) would've been introduced. In fact volume 1 of the light novel skips from where Kirito and Asuna fight the Kobold in episode 2 and picks up immediately around events you'll see in episode 10 or 11 if I'm right while all the episodes in between were originally volume 3/4 side stories).
Another reason why is because outside of Kirito the writing for all the other characters isn't really that great until one of the later arcs. The writing does get better by the 4th main arc (Alicization arc which would be season 3 and 4 for the anime and is imo the best arc as of now) and even the arc right before that was much better than arc 2 (last half of season 1).
Imo the anime's more or less decent. Not bad but also not really amazing in comparison to most others. Could probably attribute a lot of the early volume/arc's issues to the writer possibly not being too experienced of a writer at the time of writing those arcs (the only thing he wrote before/at the same time was Accel World if I'm right and SAO began as web novels the writer published on their own before he got a publishing deal from 2002 to 2008 before a publisher picked it up in 2009 so he may not have had any or at least many editors (or at least not a professional editor) helping out with cleaning things up/giving feedback. His writing gets better with each major arc (well besides arc 2 but that's also volume 2) as he writes more/gains more experience and feedback) All anime openings are all great though.

I'm probably the only one who liked the second half of the first season of season one since I liked
the fantasy setting and the fact that the girl wasn't around as much as the first half of the season.
I only finished the first season since I wasn't into dropping many shows back then. Never watched the

There’s are parts of SAO season 1 that are very odd like the whole playing house with some AI little girl but yea otherwise it’s ok. Definitely the second season that made everyone lose interest. The subsequent seasons don’t really help either since Kirito stops growing as a character and the other characters don’t barely have any thoughts or goals that don’t involve Kirito. It just becomes “watch this perfect, child prodigy, pro gamer, programmer, engineer, kendo student, detective solve and fix everything while he collects more girls for his harem.” That’s where the belief that SAO is trash comes from and it’s hard to say they’re wrong when the show peaked at its beginning and has steadily gone downhill since. Even if some of the more recent seasons have been decent, it’s still hard to recover from what it was.

To answer your question about the opinion of SAO. People have probably already answered this in someway... But for me I would say that the first half (until ep 15, if I remember correctly) of the first season is great, I really enjoyed it. Second half wasn't bad just not as good as the first half. But after that it just became worse with each episode (it has some good moments). The art style and animation is still good but it becomes somewhat redundant and repetitive. The stakes are never as high as the first half of the first season, so the excitement of the story never really reaches the same peak again. Personally there is also a bit to much "fan service" for my taste.

Highly recommend Tori no Uta, the opening of Air (the 2005 top song). I've never watched Air myself (I probably should), but just listening to the song already gives me huge nostalgic vibes and I absolutely love it.

This list is kinda odd because it doesn’t include every year of anime. Anime has technically been around since the 1910s if you count recited paper puppet animation. Then you have the WWII propaganda era. Then Tezuka, the Godfather of Manga & Anime, revolutionized the medium with “Atomic Atom” or as you might know him, “Astro Boy”. He invented battle Shonen but with a more “Post-War” trauma coping theme to alleviate the effects of the war on all the fatherless & brotherless children suffering at the time. He created the “big eye anime style” based on Walt Disney’s American cartoons & American comic books like Superman that American soldiers brought into Japan when they were occupying the nation after the war.

There is so many Bangers in this Video. Is also really interesting, because we can see and Hear, how those opening changed visually and by the type of Music Genre which dominated in Japand during those 50 years. I'm a bit sadge that Specialz didn't catch up on this video, but thats Understandable - Yoasobi song from Oshi No Ko was a FUCKING BANGER too

Cats eyes & City Hunter are from the same artist/author. There is even a joke in a late volume of Cat's eyes, when a male charater (cops) make a pose with his gun, and one of the female main character said "he look like Countryside Hunter" 😂😂

The reason why DBZ and Pokemon feel like they came out around the same time is because, English TV wise (especially the UK), they did. DBZ came to TV in the UK in 1998 on a comedy channel then Cartoon Network in 1999 while Pokemon came out on SKY One also in 1999.

Every time I watch these compilations I age ate least ten years. I could see myself with 20+ years of anime among that.
Btw, I think the only way to have an opening quiz where you know everything, is by having a mod put together a list, otherwise there will always be something new in it.

Like Initial D for car racing.
    Yowamushi Pedal for bike racing.
    Haikyuu for volleyball.
    Slam Dunk for basketball.
Yuri on Ice for ice skating.
Hajime no Ippo for boxing .
Ping Pong the animation for ping üong .
Ballroom e Youkoso for dancing competition.
    Ao Ashi for soccer.
    Hoshi no Sora for badminton.
    Prince of Tennis for tennis.
Prince of Stride for parkour running.
Running with the wind for running.
    Tsurune for archery.
    Cross Game for baseball.
    Bakuten for gymnastic.
    Kabaddi for kabaddi.
Free for swimming (at least I can't think of another anime in that regard)
Birdie Wing for not very realistic but hella fun golf.
Aoharu Kinkanyuu for survival shooter games (tag?).
    Sk8 the infinity for skating.
Capeta for ... go cart racing.

...Gonna be honest I kinda want to suggest a top 10 or so jrpg openings (they're basically like anime openings) however when doing a quick search I only found about 3 to 4 videos by fairly small creators...throw in Kingdom Hearts is in most of those lists and that's Disney that's almost a guaranteed copyright strike right there. But since I saw one of them in said lists I'll recommend Atelier Iris 1 through 3 openings and Mana Khemia 1 and 2 openings as a video game opening option if you ever feel like trying game anime style openings out.

If you react to saint seiya some day there’s a lot of opening. You have the original serie saint seiya op 1-4 but the second one have 2 version and you have all the ending too, then there’s the lost canvas op 1 and ending 1, soul of gold op 1, Omega op 1-4. You can make a big video .
There’s saintia sho but no one want it.
And if you want you have a LOT of the best ost ever made
By the way the introduction for the saint seiya brave soldier game is really good too, it’s animated.

Cheers for continuing to explore older anime! However, "most popular anime" does not grant an adequate picture of what the landscape of stories were at the time, or even what was most produced by the industry. Look at the explosion of isekai shows in the last 10 years, and only 1 made this list.
For sports anime, a lot of super popular ones have been suggested, but here may be a few more obscure ones to look into:
Princess Nine (baseball), Aim for Ace (tennis), Tomorrow's Joe (boxing), F (racing, formula 1), Tiger Mask (pro wrestling), Birdie Wing (golf), Hi Score Girl (video games), Ping Pong the Animation (table tennis), Chihayafuru (karuta), Hikari no Densetsu (rhythmic gymnastics), Yakitate!! Japan (baking, yes not a traditional sport but it's framed as competitive cooking)
Please continue to broaden your horizons with classic anime; I guarantee you will find something that surprises you and will grab you just as hard as the newer stuff.

Attempt 28 Day 46 of asking for reaction to the Dot Hack Sign openings and Endings/ DOt HAck Franchise (intermixed series of anime and games)
Also yes it is the last 2/3 of season 1 that a large number of people really really HATE. However, the fact you entered in with that impression likely influences your reception to some degree. If you start out watching it expecting something between flawed and "the worst thing ever" then you are more likely to be pleasantly surpised, whereas people who entered in expecting something really exceptional are more likely to be deeply disappointed.
