Slayers are reeeeeeeally good old-school Fantasy with magic monsters demons and party of mercenaries that get involved in big events.
It has 3 original seasons that was made in 90s, and then J.C.Staff remembered of them and decide to make two new seasons that wasnt that original as old ones but still was pretty nice, and in the time then all fantasy was replaced by ISEKAI this simple fantasy was really refreshing.
And originally Slayers was just a simple card-game for old consoles that has some manga chapters that describe its lore. And then still small studio get chance to make ecranization for this they just "Hm, leeets create a really interesting and fun story about adventure."
This is just good fun adventure, there main heroin more famous in masses for how she can destoy half on town while saving it, more than that she is the one who save this world already three or four times.

      "Is it good?" YES.
"How many episodes?" Also YES. More seriously... Slayers season 1 has 26 episodes, Slayers NEXT (season 2) has 26 as well. Slayers Try (Season 3) follows the trend with another 26 glorious episodes. Slayers Glorious (season 4) breaks the streak with 13 episodes, finally Slayers revolution-R wraps things up with 13 episodes as well. The grand total thus comes to 104 episodes. Beyond those there's a number of largely independent ova and episodic movies that feature Lina from her younger years, before season 1 starts. There's also of course the manga, novels and gods so much other material, but honestly the Anime stuff is quite self contained.
Revolution-R counts as an ending since it is the last season of the whole thing. If you do decide to watch this show I 100% recommend starting with season 1 since there's a Lot of story and development to characters and plot that you'll completely miss if you do.

Slayers is a comedic fantasy series about a gluttonous, money-hungry young sorceress named Lina Inverse and her party of adventurers. It’s probably closest in tone to Reincarnated as a Slime, out of all the anime you’ve seen. When I joined the fandom back in the late 90s, it was considered required viewing.

She plays the redhead main character, Lina Inverse, who is a sorceress in the context of the series which is basically Dungeons and Dragons the anime. Slayers is also a reversal of standard storytelling. Lina doesn't go through a journey to gain power and improve her skills. None of them do. We jump right in with all of them already essentially at their prime. Sure, Lina does power up from Dragon Slave to Giga Slave, but it's not a focal of the story for them to get better/stronger.

The singer for the OP’s (also the VA of the main character for the Japanese version) is Megumi Hayashibara who was HUGE in Japan in the late 90’s early 2000’s, and some of these songs were pop hits. She also did the OP for Love Hina, Lost Universe, and a couple other shows I don’t remember.

Slayers franchise was quite popular in 90s, which had 3 TV series air in mid-90s. And then 2 new TV series (which more or less had one continuous story, so might as well be 1 single longer TV show) later aired in 2008~2009. Besides the 5 TV series, there are some Slayers OVAs and multiple theatrical releases.
While the light novels, mangas are still coming out, the latest Slayers anime released is still the 2009 TV series.

3 season of slayer anime aired in 1995-97 while revolution/evolution-r as 2 new seasons aired in 2008-2009 so theres jump in animation quality
fun fact; 1 of the protagonist lina inverse’s most notable spells called dragon slayer, drag slav or dragon slave (translation issue and there was even at one point… drug slave) has a specific incarnation chant and one that is directly referenced by the incarnation chant that megumin uses for explosion, there is some obvious similarities in the beginning but side from that the biggest give away is that both chant chant refers to channeling the power of ‘something’ to enact the spell but that begs the question of whose power is explosion even channeling while in dragon slave’s case its directly stated to be calling upon the power of 1 of the strongest of demonic beings in the series so explosion’s chant is a case of “hay can i copy your homework?”, “sure but make sure it doesnt look the same” but then its submitted into the wrong class lmao
    just compare the chant
    [Explosion]
Darkness blacker than black and darker than dark, I beseech thee, combine with my deep crimson.
    The time of awakening cometh.
Justice, fallen upon the infallible boundary, appear now as an intangible distortion!
    Dance, Dance, Dance!
I desire for my torrent of power a destructive force: a destructive force without equal! Return all creation to cinders, and come from the abyss!
    EXPLOSION!
    [Dragon Slave]
One who is darker than twilight
One who is redder than flowing blood
Buried in the flow of time
    In thy great name,
I hereby pledge myself to darkness
Those who stand before us in our way
All those who have become fools
    Merge thy power and mine
To grant destruction equally to all!!
    DRAGON SLAVE!

    • @BlazeEmerald
      @BlazeEmerald 3 місяці тому +5

      I prefer the translation of
      Darkness beyond twilight
      Crimson beyond blood that flows
Buried in the stream of time
      is where your power grows
      I pledge myself to conquer
      all the foes who stand
before the mighty gifts placed in my unworthy hand
Let the fools who stand before me be destroyed by the power you and I possess
      Dragon Slave
Also the whole Dragon Slave thing is an actual in setting thing. Dragon Slayer is a seperate spell that Dragon Slave was derived from. Forget if it was linguistic drift or they forgot the correct incantation for the original.
The really cool part is there is a spell with a similar incantation that draws on a ... different ... power source so we can actually pick apart what parts of the spell are the ones that draw on Ruby Eyed Shabranigdu and which ones are more about the spell that is being cast by doing so.

Every one of the eight episodes have a interesting different intro but if you have to pick just one I would say the one with “Mad Machine” as the song (I think it’s the second episode, titled “Born to Kill”), or the one from the first episode “Tinsel City” with the song “ Konya wa Hurricane”.

As for the change between the first 3 opening and Evolution-R and Revolution is because of how much time has passed between them. You asked how big Slayers is as an anime, and the answer is that it was (and still is) one of the biggest, most iconic anime in history! It level of influence is up there with all the grand daddies that modern anime take inspiration from today (like DBZ, Sailor Moon, Eva, Haruhi, Bebop, etc) and you've definitely seen it's influence all over comedy/fantasy anime of modern times, hell Megumin from Konosuba is almost entirely a reference to Lina Inverse on her own! (Specifically the Explosion spell is a direct homage/parody of the Dragon Slave spell from Slayers)

The openings are done by Hayashibara Megumi a super popular voice actress who also voice the protagonist in this series, and is also a quite popular vocalist with 20+ albums published. Her other popular roles feature, Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop, Ai Haibara from Detective Conan, Rei Ayanami, Yui Ikari and Pen Pen in Evangelion and Ranma Saotome in Ranma 1/2.
Also Slayers world setting is considered Dark Fantasty, while the anime tends to jump to very funny comedy elements and even some serious moments are lightened by random drops of comedy, the topics and setting itself are very dark. Also the story continues from season to season and it would be hard to watch a later season without that season referencing some stuff that happened in the previous seasons.

Never clicked faster on video. I love the series. It's one of the first series I watched in 90's. It's action adventure fantasy combined with comedy. It can be very silly, but has serious moments. The main character is Lina Inverse. She is powerful sorceress, traveling around and slaying bandits and taking their money. This series begins with her meeting Gourry Gabriev capable fighter with sword, kind, but he is not the smartest guy around. It has some silly episodes, but has serious main story. Lina took something from bandits powerful antagonist is looking for desperately so their adventure begins (won't say more to not spoil). They meet many fun and memorable characters along the way.
The first three are from the season 1-3 from 90's the later are from new continuation, which honestly is not that good like the first three. The music and soundtrack for this series is good.

Ah, yes, Slayers... Not many people know this, but Slayers is essentially in the same vein as Konosuba. They are both fantasy comedies, though Konosuba is more parody, while Slayers is true to its DnD roots (no, you do not need to know DnD to know Slayers; Slayers has its own mythology). That being said, Slayers still manages to be somewhat farcical in nature with some of its episodic plotlines.
Talking about the history of the main character, Lina Inverse, is an excellent way to describe this, actually. Lina is known to be exceptionally skilled with magic. Her most destructive spell, the Giga Slave, is her own creation; after completing it, she left an entire lake of fish dead. That may not sound like much, but there's no hope for recovery for the lake; the water itself is also "dead". Lina is so skilled at magic that she even has played at being a magic teacher for a short while (she was good at that as well), before going out into the world as an adventurer of sorts, at her older sister's behest.
Speaking of which, the person Lina fears most is her older sister, who, it turns out, is an incredibly important and powerful character. The reason Lina fears her, however, is because Lina took pictures of her sister bathing and tried to sell them for profit...only for her sister to beat her within an inch of her life for trouble. The beating was so bad that Lina nearly died, requiring several days to recover, despite being exposed to healing magic.
While Lina has her own spell in the Giga Slave, she often prefers to use the Dragon Slave spell to finish fights (the name of the spell, in the lore, used to be Dragon Slayer, but time corrupted the name). However, while Dragon Slave is not as destructive as Giga Slave, it IS still powerful enough to level entire cities if misused...and Lina has in fact leveled several cities.
In case you haven't picked it up yet, Lina Inverse is by no means a virtuous character. She's greedy, selfish, hot-tempered, and destructive. She's no problem exploiting others to suit her ends. Her only real saving grace is that she only kills if she has to, and DOES put some value into preserving human life, even if she doesn't mind reducing their livelihoods to ash.
And I could go on, especially with her supporting cast. But I really should end this here before I gush this post into a full-blown essay. The Slayers series is a very fun watch, and is worth getting into. It's not nearly as as long as other popular anime, so it's easier to get into, and has plenty of side content to whet your appetite.

Fun fact: the dub of this features entirely new york actors, so has voices many will recognize from alot of 4kids shows. so the blonde swordsman guy, Gourry, is Eric Stewart who played Brock in pokemon and Kaiba in YuGiOh. the younger girl, Amelia is Veronica Taylor, who played Ash originally in pokemon. Lina, the main character is Lisa Ortiz, who was dawn in pokemon and Amy in sonic X. The blue/grey skinned guy, Zelgadis, is actually Crispin Freeman from before he moved to LA when he became the voice of Alucard In hellsing, itachi in naruto, winston in overwatch, loki in a ton of marvel things and just a massive list. and the show also features other familiar voices as side characters. they all do a great job, i feel.
as many have said, its mostly a comedy series, and has references to other properties. but can get serious at times. it is highly underrated i feel and deserves more attention. its based on a book series so has much more indepth lore then many anime. tho the show condenses it alot.
the original three seasons was Slayers, then Slayers: NEXT, followed by Slayers: TRY. each one is basically a self contained story, but do have continuity. Slayers: Revolution and Slayers Evolution-R were two additional seasons released about a decade later, but features much of the same cast.
bonus fun fact: the show is directly related to another anime called Lost Universe. which is a space anime, probably akin to something like Outlaw Star. tho the relation is more superficial and can be gone into more detail should watch both.

Attempt 20 Day 25 asking For Dot Hack Sign openings and Endings
Dragonball technically started in the late 80s but most westerners were not exposed until the 90s.
Sailor Moon was 1992 (but 1995 for the west). for 90's kids Sailor Moon, Dragonball, and couple others like YuYu Hakasho and Gundam were the "mainstream anime" that a lot of us didn't even realize were anime. Slayers would have been one from that era that got a bit less exposure.
1998 was the Pokemon explosion, followed soon after by shows like Digimon, Yu-Gi-oh, Carcaptor Sakura, Monster Rancher etc.
90s shows for older audiences include Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Rurouni Kenshin, and Serial Experiments Lain.
One Piece and the first HunterxHunter series did also start in 1999, but most Westerners were not exposed until the 2000's. Such was the nature of things when we had to wait on TV executive decisions and localizations for Dubs (since almost everyone watched Dubs before streaming was a thing)
Naruto and Bleach didn't start airing in Japan until the early 2000's

So you're aware, the original DragonBall begain airing in Japan in 1986, while DragonBall Z started in 1989. Sailor Moon began its run in 1992. And One Piece began its anime in 1999.

I highly recommend Slayers. It's a great anime. It's a good story with amazing characters. It has an story arc per season, seasoned with other things that happen. The main group is more or less the same every arc. Each arc introduces a new adventure, but it is not a reboot, the story keeps on going. It can be really funny and it also has serious and emotional moments.
I'm not going to spoil it for you. Not too much. Think about it like a crazy DND adventure campaign.
Learning what roles each character plays and how they are portrayed is a something I don't wish to spoil. Or how they get involved into each season main arc.
The order is Slayers(26), -NEXT(26), -TRY(26), REVOLUTION(13) and EVOLUTION R(13). The last two are more modern.

    Slayers was, basically, D&D.
Fun fact 1: here in Italy Slayers came out in a time period when TV was OBSESSED in eliminating as much non-italian terms as possible, so the title ended up being changed in "Un incantesimo dischiuso fra i petali del tempo per Rina" (A disclosed spell between the petals of time for Rina)... now, imagine remembering that AS A CHILD.
Fun fact 2: Lina's (main character, the redhead) period was used as a joke in the anime (because the cramps were so severe it prevented her to use any kind of magic, until the red days passed), but it ended up being censored and re-dubbed as "a mysterious malady that affects women once a month and saps all of their magic from their body"

Slayers is a classic anime, and a very good anime. It's basically an extended series of D&D campaigns. Each new "title" is just a new season, really. The first three seasons came out in the 90's, and the last two - Revolution and *then* Evolution-R - came out some time later, to finish the story told by the source material.

  • @jkosch
    @jkosch 3 місяці тому +2

Slayer is one of my favorite series. It is clearly worth watching.
Hearing someone call Gourry a "stoic hero" is so funny.
Classic group of adventurers going around doing adventurer stuff is not wrong - if takes my 24 years of roleplaying experience into account that is true for an open ended campaign with big ongoing plot treads and involved storylines in terms of motivations within the story arcs.
In short: it is a mostly comedic classic fantasy story with out main heroine Lina Inverse picking up a group of friends along her adventures. Mostly comedic because it knows when to play things for drama as well and the main storylines are about serious threats.
All of the openings (and some of the other songs like endings and insert songs and songs from OVAs) are performed by the legendary Megumi Hayashibara. She is an accomplished singer and voice actor and also voices the main character of Slayers, Lina Inverse. Megumi Hayashibara has an insane reach as voice actor and in the same year she was the energetic Lina Inverse she also was Rei Ayanami in Neon Genesis Evangelion, Musashi (= Jessie) in Pokemon, Ai Haibara in Detective Conan, and many others. She also was the voice of female Ranma in Ranma 1/2. She is still active (though less than in the 90s and early 2000s.
Slayers Revolution and Slayers Evolution R (that is the order as 4th and 5th series of Slayers) look different because they were made in 2008 and 2009, compared to the Slayers (1995), Slayers Next (1996), and Slayers Try (1997) it is much newer (though in between that time up to 2001 there had been some OVAs and movies been produced)
Slayers is based on a light novel series that started in 1989 and is still ongoing (the last volume has been published in 2019). The anime made it's own continuity (mostly to keep the main cast more constant with Zelgadis [the guy with the bluish rocky skin] and Amelia [the black haired girl in white] being fan favorites that stay in focus almost as much as Lina and Gourry) with the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th season taking plot points, characters etc. from the light novels, whereas the third season was anime original with some aspects the author Hajime Kanzaka did not like. The OVAs are almost all prequels detailing Linas adventures with fellow mage Naga (the Serpent) instead of the party that she gathers in the main series.

    6:48 Breeze [third series opening]
10:06 Front Breaking [fifth series opening]
13:26 Plenty of Grit [fourth series opening]
    16:40 Revolution [fourth series ending]
Vocalists for most of these are Masami Okui and Megumi Hayashibara. Megumi Hayashibara is the character voice for Lina Inverse [the redhead you see in the animations].
Revolution and Evolution-R are much later than the original three series, airing originally in 2008 and 2009, that might be why you got a different vibe from them [and why they have somewhat different animation style], even second and third series also had subtitles, NEXT and TRY.

Slayers is one of the pillars of 90s fantasy anime, the action-comedy counterpart to the dramatic adventure of Record of Lodoss War.
Others from around this time period that may interest you are Magic Knight Rayearth, Sorcerous Stabber Orphen, Vision of Escaflowne, Fushigi Yugi (more Asian fantasy like Inuyasha than Western high fantasy) & Sorcerer Hunters (NSFW-warning, nothing explicit but certainly cheeky)

I think it started in late 80s but Legend of galactic heroes is also an epic one. Both the original and relaunch are worth watching.

Blast from the past. I loved Slayers both the TV series and OVAs. Think of a D&D adventure that goes off the rails. The first 3 seasons came out pretty close together. The last 2 seasons are ones that came out much later in the late 2000’s.

Slayers was a little before my time so I didn't end up watching it. Really enjoyed the openings though. While it didn't come out in the 90's, Hajime no Ippo is a classic and did start airing in 2000 so it has a lot of similarities to shows of that era. You really need to check out the openings for it. It is one of the three biggest sports anime and is insanely good with an amazing soundtrack. I feel like both the music and the show are something you would really enjoy.

Evolution-R and Revolution was the continuation of the slayers anime after a long hiatus - it came out in 2010 if I remember rightly and amazingly they were able to get the same English voice actors from the 90's OG series to return for the main cast for the dub, random fun fact The Slayers was one of Christopher Sabat's first anime Voice acting roles, the voice of Piccolo, Vegeta and Yamcha of Dragonball, Zoro from One Piece. Armstrong in FMA are just a few names in a list as long as ya arm XD

SLAYERS!! One of my favorite animes ever!! It was one of the animes that got me into watching anime as a whole when I was younger. I loved the english dubbed version of it so much. I think its a really good series to watch. My favorite season was the second one Slayers Next, if anything I highly recommend watching it at least to the end of that season if anything! There was such a large gap between seasons 3 and four and five which didn't come out until somewhat recently. However there are no new episodes of Slayers since that last season sadly.

Artist is Megumi Hayashibara. She voices Jessie from Pokemon (the team rocket girl and also Rina Inverse the protagonist of The Slayers).
You got my interest now! Finally some old school goodness! Some recommendations just whenever you have time:
Orphen openings both classic and remake
Shakugan no Shana (3 seasons, 7 openings)

I rarely comment on YT, but like many have said. Slayers was unique and popular. It has a MC in Lina Inverse that is rare to find in any media in my opinion, A girl who is not perfect, has her own worries that may sound silly to others but that just makes her more relatable. She is not dumb, or sexualized like other anime in the same time frame. If you took away her magic and put her in modern real life, i would never know she was not real if you know what i mean, she is just a normal girl with magic is what i see her as and that to me is perfect. She is probably my most fav anime character. As for the singer Megumi Hayashibara, i will just add on that she is probably a pillar of Voice acting and singing in anime. some consider her the queen of anime music and voice acting

Slayers is one of my favorite classic action, romcoms from the 90's which is mostly D&D based. "Give a Reason" and "Breeze" are my two favorite opening from Slayers, it has both light novels and manga.
It's centered around Lina Inverse(the red head), a gluttonous, lazy and money hungry yet powerful sorceress and her party(Gourry, Amelia, and Zelgadis) following their adventures, fighting dangers and evil who try to take over the world time and time again. I hope you can eventually watch it.
Gourry is the classic swordsman with a powerful ancient sword, but isn't that smart, Amelia is a princess with a love for adventure and serves as their healer, and Zelgadis is the cursed sorcerer-swordsman.
Fun fact, the vocalist for the openings is Megumi Hayashibara, who's is also the VA for Lina.
