Funny that Masamune Shirow actually claimed in an interview 20+ years ago that never have an art class in his whole life when he created dominion tank police (Shirow's first big manga that animated.)
As for Origa, go listen to her non-anime related songs... they are very nice.

22:36 Maybe the newer Macross series have more of a magical girl element but the original Macross was not about that. It was a dramatic space opera that happened to have one Idol singer. It’s one of the most influential series in mecha genre along with Gundam. On a different note, when you say don’t recommend things you can’t react to, I don’t know if most of us know if a series we are recommending would be heavily copyright claimed or not since many of us don’t do UA-cam reactions. I know I recommended Bubblegum Crisis before (Great series btw) but I have no idea if the copyright will be strict for it.

Every single Macross series has had a musical theme and, with the progress of the franchise, the singing avanced from being a symbolical thing to bring people together to an actual powerset. It started with Macross 7 but the last and newest Macross, Delta, made it a thing from the start of the anime and also more actiony.

just tagging my comments here. Some of Frontier's EDs (like Diamond Crevasse, Northern Cross, Ao no Ether) and insert songs (like Yousei), they are arguably better than the OPs!!
In order of what Luke watched: Macross 7 (1994)[rock band theme], Macross Frontier (2008)[theme: solo popular artiste, upstart artiste and duet] , Macross Delta (2016) [theme: idol group]
Found a few titles from the 70s-80s that may match what Luke's dad watched: Chou Denji Machine Voltes V (1977), Choujin Sentai Baratack (1977), Hyakujuu-Ou GoLion [a.k.a. Voltron] (1981), Chouriki Robo Galatt (1984)
Macross besides the transforming Mecha-Plane is like Music saves and brings peace to the Universe! And yes, there are varous sizes of those transforming Mech-planes: from the fighter plane size to daddy size carriers to grand-daddy size..
15:09 Luke, thats no "happy" song, that's a BATTLE song! rumor has it that japanese fighter pilots play these songs when they go into battle!
Some live concerts recommendation for Macross:
      Megumi Nakajima x May'n - Lion Compilation ver 2.0: OD9l5FVyvio
Macross F 2021 - Nyan Nyan Final Attack Frontier Greatest Medley: sVRue9lgLmE
Macross 7 - Dynamite Explosion Yoshiki Fukuyama & Chie Kajiura Feat. Megumi Nakajima: e1BFshrvfYk
Walküre Final Live 2023 - Last Mission - Ikenai Borderline: Ss_UKI5BBLI
      Diamond Crevasse = May'n - Macross F 2021: QNr0VR5D-7s

[Technically Speaking] There is no such thing as "magic" in the Macross Universe.
Instead, you have "Super Science" (called "De-Culture"), that bridges spacetime & energy with thought & memes.
The "magical girl" aspect of the Idol Singers is rooted in the (ancient) modification of the DNA of [all kinds of] humanity by a precursor race (creating hidden pathways in the basic structure of the brain through adolescence) that certain songs can trigger, directly influencing the mind & spirit (that then can direct the reality alteration posible thanks to the superscience).
-> None of this is ever stated in the series themselves (have to read all the novels).

The movie "Ghost in the Shell" (1995) by Mamoru Oshii is truly legendary, and the anime series "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex" was released seven years later (52 episodes from 2002 to 2004), followed by the movie "S.A.C. Solid State Society" from 2006. The quote below is about the original movie from 1995.
    From wikipedia:
Ghost in the Shell influenced some prominent filmmakers. The Wachowskis, creators of The Matrix and its sequels, showed it to producer Joel Silver, saying, "We wanna do that for real." The Matrix series took several concepts from the film, including the Matrix digital rain, which was inspired by the opening credits of Ghost in the Shell, and the way characters access the Matrix through holes in the back of their necks. Other parallels have been drawn to James Cameron's Avatar, Steven Spielberg's A.I. Artificial Intelligence and Jonathan Mostow's Surrogates. James Cameron cited Ghost in the Shell as a source of inspiration, citing it as an influence on Avatar.
Bungie's 2001 third-person action game Oni draws substantial inspiration from Ghost in the Shell's setting and characters. Ghost in the Shell also influenced video games such as the Metal Gear Solid series, Deus Ex, and Cyberpunk 2077.

GITS:SAC is an absolutely amazing anime. Both seasons. For different reasons, but wow. Absolutely primer quality 2000s Anime, from the time riiiight before type-b moe-blobs became pervasive enough to change the face of anime completely into the dismal isekai/harem schlock that we have had for over a decade and a half.

      Ghost in the Shell franchise:
      -----------
      Ghost in the Shell (manga)
      -----------
Ghost in the Shell (anime movie/film, there's now numerous/many older and newer versions of it)
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (anime movie/film)
      ----------
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (anime, season 1) // "GitS: SAC"
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig (anime, season 2) // "GitS: SAC"
      -----------
prequel single episodes/OVAs for the 2 seasons of GitS: SAC:
The Laughing Man (prequel episode/OVA for season 1)
      Individual 11 (prequel episode/OVA for season 2)
      ------------
Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society (was only a single movie/film/OVA/episode, and not a third/new season of GitS: SAC, as it failed badly to restart GitS)
      -------------
Another Ghost in the Shell restart was attempted, with much more success (compared to the flop of Solid State Society) for what it was:
Ghost in the Shell: Arise // (4 part anime OVAs/movie/films, see below)
      Ghost_in_the_Shell: Border 1: Ghost Pain
      Ghost_in_the_Shell: Border 2: Ghost Whispers
      Ghost_in_the_Shell: Border 3: Ghost Tears
Ghost_in_the_Shell: Border 4: Ghost Stands Alone
      ------------
and the newest restart of Ghost in the Shell, using 3d cgi, and it's not bad for what it is, but it's still not GitS: SAC, but it's still a decent anime series:
Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 (anime series)
Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 (a very condensed anime movie/film/OVA of the anime series, no idea why it was made, lol, just watch the anime series of it)
      ----------
      GitS gaming/games:
Ghost in the Shell (PS1), it's a really neat "3rd person shooter" type of game, as you're using the tachikoma, the spider tank, and so you can move along walls/ceilings, which makes it interesting, but the game is quite hard, as you got to race (time limit) through the level, with various objectives to do
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (PS2) (2004)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Domain of the Hunters (PS2) (2005)
Ghost in the Shell: First Assault Online (free to play online first person shooter game)
      ----------
      hollywood (live-actor) movie:
Ghost in the Shell (with scarlet johanson) // extremely krappy, badly mixing merely some elements from the manga and the anime movie/film, and some from Stand Alone Complex

    • @Trooper10231

@redmoonbloodmoon3161 the Scarlett Johansen film is fine and was approved of by the creator.
People attack it purely for being "Hollywood" version. But it isn't.
It doesn't even fell or look like a Hollywood movie.
Frankly, it looks like a well done live action anime.
Now, does it hold up to the standards of Ghost In The Shell?
I say it depends. Most of the stuff we know and it pulls from? No.
The later stuff 2045 and the 3D crap? Yes, and is frankly far better.
Is it essential? No. But is an interesting asside as to how to bring an anime to live action in the west. Same for Battle Angel Alita.

The thumbnail for Ghost in the Shell was from the original movie in 1995 so it kind of got my hopes up (the GITS series OP's are awesome too). I would love to see you react to both Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex series series and the original 1995 Ghost in the Shell movie. The movie is only has an 83 minute runtime so it wouldn't be too long of a reaction. Just keep in mind the two seasons of Stand Alone Complex and the movie use the same characters, same location, and similar themes, but either can be watched without the other as they are isolated stories (what happens in the movie doesn't happen in the series and vice versa).

Both of the Ghost in the Shell where sung by Origa a russian singer who got popular in Japan with those 2 songs the songs where composed by Yoko Kano who needs no introduction imo.
She did songs for ∀ Gundam (Turn A Gundam) and Final Fantasy XIII-2 too.
Saddly she passed away a while ago but she has a lot of cool songs including non Anime/Game Sountracks, she simply has a beautiful voice.

Ghost in the Shell SAC is absolutely peak science fiction that holds up very well to this day. The opening and endings are unskippable. It heavily influenced all other cyberpunk including the Matrix. Macross has a cool premise, but tbh I also have no idea whats going on in its later incarnations, its on a list to check out though
Attempt 21 Day 27 recommending the Dot Hack Sign openings and endings. The show itself is less popular, but the music from the opening occupies a similar mind-bending space to the SAC one with heavy nostalgia of the mid-2000's for many. Also the show laid a lot of the themes that SAO later rode to much greater fame with a more action-packed story.

Here is the this thing, Macross was dilluted into what it is now due to idol culture, it wasn't intended to be that way when it was first appear, probably, because the first one don't focus intirely on the idol aspect of the show, it focus on the subject of what if humans manage to travel into long space journey, something like star trek but with normal earth civilization, then add with alien encounter, how they gonna deal with it, how are the average non military civilians deal with long space travel as a civilian and not as the military that brought them into space, how the civilians interact with the military and how the aliens deal with the humans, they were all out military style creature met with weird stuff where some of the human will kill them and some totally will flee from them, they see human and their culture for the first time, and that is where the idol kind of got mixed with the space war thing, human just being human where ever they go,
well, the lore kind of tell the story where the human need something to entertain their long boring space journey so they dicide to make a singing competition and start an idol culture in space while they are being chased by aliens,

    Gestalt robot anime? -
Go Nagai's Mazinger or Getter Robot - From Mazinger Z (Tranzor Z in the U.S.) (1972) to Mazinger Z: Infinity (2017), From Getter Robo (1974) to Getter Robo Arc (2021)
Voltron (Beastking Golion) - two seasons Lion Force Voltron (1984) to 8 sessions of Voltron: Legendary Defender (2016-1018)
Sunrise's Brave Series - which goes from Brave Exkaiser (1990) to Brave Universe Sworgrader (2023).
Ghost in the Shell (1995) is the OG Cyberpunk.
It along with AKIRA introduced anime to the West.
The original 1995 adult animated neo-noir cyberpunk thriller film[8][9] directed by Mamoru Oshii and adapted by frequent Oshii collaborator Kazunori Itō. The film is based on the manga of the same name by Masamune Shirow. It's about spies, robots, cyborgs, and philosophy.
I found the 2004 film Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence a little boring. Down to basics, it's about stopping a crime organization selling bioroid sex toys that have children's memories implanted in them. (I am serious).
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (2002) is a Japanese anime television series produced by Production I.G and a second session called Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG (2004),The series centers on the members of an elite law enforcement unit known as Public Security Section 9 as they investigate cybercrime and terrorism cases; the cases in the first season often are connected to their pursuit of an elite "Super Class A" hacker and corporate terrorist known only as "The Laughing Man". I have the both sessions, the film Solid State Society (2006), and the Tachikoma CD "be Human"
Ghost in the Shell: Arise, also known in Japan as Mobile Armored Riot Police: Arise (Japanese: 攻殻機動隊 ARISE, Hepburn: Kōkaku Kidōtai Araizu), is an original video animation and television series that serves as a re-imagining of Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell.
    MACROSS is complicated
Macross (マクロス) is a Japanese science fiction mecha anime media franchise/media mix,
Super Dimension Fortress Macross - Flash Back 2012 - Macross II - Macross Plus - Macross 7 Macross FB 7 - Macross Zero - Macross Frontier (albums) - Macross The Ride - Macross Delta
    - The Reason there are space planes and pop stars is because Super Dimension Fortress Macross - Original work adapted by Harmony Gold to become Robotech: The Macross Saga in 1984 (along with two other anime series that were forced to become sequels).
An extraterrestrial spaceship called Macross crashes on Earth and humanity reverse engineers the technology to reach the stars. Extraterrestrials called the Zentradi attack wanting the ship Macross and attack, only for the ship to space fold to Pluto. They accidentally taking two naval ships and part of the island with them, the former become the arms of Macross' mecha form and the latter results in thousands of people being trapped on the Macross. In the end, it's human music that allows the Zentradi to understand there is something more than war. (the film version was called "Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?"
By the time you get into Macross Plus and Macross Frontier (my favorites), you get Zentradi GRANDCHILDREN. Macross Frontier has music able to reach the hearts of a hive of space folding extraterrestrial insects!

This guy is a walking sci-fi anime encyclopedia! Couldn't have said it better myself, friend! I know a bit about the old Beast King GoLion and the sequel series, because well I grew up on Voltron. Wasn't till much, much later when I properly discovered anime and even later than that when I found the original GoLion series DVD set and realized how much the American producers of Voltron changed (and fucked it all up). Same with Macross. Goddamn Carl Macek and his bastardized Robotech abomination. Keep Macross ORIGINAL!!!

Macross is a long running Mecha franchise that started in 1982, with the most recent incarnation being released in 2016
Each incarnation has different protagonists, but all versions share three core themes: LOVE, WAR, and MUSIC
How these themes are incorporated generally depends on whoever the current show-runner is
Thus far there are 4 TV series (which you reacted to), 2 movies, 3 direct to video series (OVAs), and 7 videogames (not counting the crossovers)
Also, the 1980s series was combined with 3 other anime and released in the USA under the name Robotech

Ghost in the shell: stand alone complex is about Section 9 a kind of black ops group working for the Japanese government. It's mostly focused on major kusanagi and is about what it means to be human, what counts as human due to most of the characters becoming cyborgs. It could also be classified as a political thriller as well.
Highly reccomended if you like hard scifi and blade runner style settings. Fair warning it is very dialog heavy but the dub is 10/10 and how I would suggest you watch it.
There are 2 seasons but I am not sure if it is streaming anywhere right now

Also, Luke, you are absolutely allowed to think the animation is a little janky in the show. It was made in the early 00s and they had to cut a few corners here and there. All of the action scenes (which are so, so good) and important moments are well animated.

Ghost in the Shell is awesome, watch it.
You got 3 of the Macross Series by the looks
    Macross 7
    Macross Frontier
    Macross Delta
7 came out in 1995, Frontier came out in 2008, and Delta cam out in 2016.
The Macross series, movies and OVAs are typically centred around different parts of the same universe. The first Macross(the big robot in each series) was basically an accidental creation born out of necessity, however after that they built a few and created a exploration/colonisation fleet around each of them. Macross 7 is based around the 7th fleet, Macross Frontier is based around the fleet that went with the Macross named Frontier, and Macross Delta is more around a fleet that colonised a planet.
The smaller fighters are typically called Veritech Fighters, or Variable Fighters due to their transformations. they have 3 basic modes, standard Fighter mode, Guardian Mode (basically a plane with legs and arms) and Battloid Mode(fully transformed into a human shape).
And Yes, The Macross (the big robot in each series) is huge, the forearm on each of them is basically an aircraft carrier.

Wow! Finally. Thanks for the reaction Luke! and reacting to the "proper" Macross OPs. You've got to check out some of their EDs (like Diamond Crevasse, Northern Cross, Ao no Ether) and insert songs (like Yousei), they are arguably better than the OPs!!
In order of what you watched: Macross 7 (1994)[rock band theme], Macross Frontier (2008)[theme: solo popular artiste, upstart artiste and duet] , Macross Delta (2016) [theme: idol group]
Found a few titles from the 70s-80s that may match what your dad watched: Chou Denji Machine Voltes V (1977), Choujin Sentai Baratack (1977), Hyakujuu-Ou GoLion [a.k.a.
15:09 Luke, thats no happy song, that's a battle song! rumor has it that japanese fighter pilots play these songs when they go into battle!
Some live concerts recommendation for Macross:
    Megumi Nakajima x May'n - Lion Compilation ver 2.0: OD9l5FVyvio

So Ghost in the Shell (henceforth referred to as GitS) is a bit of a media behemoth now. It's one of the biggest influences in the idea of Cyberpunk style in nearly all media that followed it.
It has multiple movies, TV series, video games, and comics/manga. Some are connected, most are not.
It started with the GitS manga in 1989
In 1995 we got the first movie, also just titled GitS, and it's a rather faithful adaption of the original manga, albeit not all of it.
In 2004 we got a direct sequel to that movie, GitS 2: Innocence
In 2002, we got the first animated series, GitS: Stand Alone Complex, which is where that first opening song is from. It is an alternate adaption of the characters and story, not directly related to the original movie
After that we got GitS SAC 2nd Gig, which is the second season of the first anime, where the 2nd opening comes from.
We also got a movie and a few OVAs set in the same timeline as the SAC show
Later on we also got GitS Arise, a set of movie length OVAs, and Arise Alternative Architecture, both alternate takes on the characters and themes, not directly related to either SAC or the original Movie
And after that we got GitS SAC_2045 (which I haven't actually watched yet myself!) which as the name implies, is in the same continuity as the earlier SAC anime.
And yes, there was a live action adaption starring ScarJo. Unfortunately the writing for that movie was kind of shit. Casting, graphics, cinematography, all done brilliantly, but let down by writers who just didn't get it.
Personally I'd recommend watching the First Movie, though that would have to be Patreon Exclusive because of booba. The second movie, Innocence, is good, but not as good as the original, or as good as some of the follow up animes.
Then absolutely watch GitS SAC and GitS SAC 2nd Gig, as they're both fantastic.
Arise I wasn't a huge fan of, something about it just rubbed me the wrong way. It's not bad, but it felt off.
And I haven't watched SAC_2045 yet, as previously mentioned.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and SAC 2nd Gig is my all time favorite anime series. Takes place in future Japan and follows a special forces police unit handling high-level cyber crime. The OG movies that came out before it are fantastic too. The voice acting is fantastic in English or Japanese and I will happily watch the whole series either way. Absolutely you should have it in your watch list.
The intros are sung by the late Origa, who had an absolute banger voice and was a polyglot, too!
EDIT: The Macross intros popped something into my head: There's a short animation on UA-cam someone made called Crimson Alpine that you would probably get a kick out of. I don't think it's long enough to make a full reaction about, but if you ever do a bunch of short animation reactions, it would be good for that probably.

GITS SAC is one of those shows that's usually grouped in with stuff like FMA & Cowboy Bebop as must-see's (also has a superb dub to the point several of the cast are always remembered for their roles in it). The OP songs have such a unique sound, even to this day.
Macross Frontier is kinda funny as it always gets pulled out when they need to promote the newest series since Delta wasn't as popular as they hoped, to the point they did several concerts where they sang each others songs. Macross itself has a super interesting (and confusing) history in the west, there's plenty of videos about it.

also, now I'm really curious about what anime your dad might be talking about... was it more of a robot show, or more of a human superhero show? because part of me wants to say it might've been Getter Robo. or the plane part makes me think maybe Gatchaman. in general, there are a ton of robot and/or super sentai shows from that era... (super sentai is Japan's costumed superhero genre, but it's very stylistically distinct, like power rangers, ultraman, kamen rider, etc.)
also, if you want to see more of the giant robot/sentai genre in the modern day, I'd say check out the OP/ED for Metallic Rouge and Bang Brave Bang Bravern. one is super sleek, modern, classy, and stylish, while the other is a charmingly over the top send up of classic mecha. and obviously I'd recommend chipping away at anything to do with Gundam... ask the audience for recommendations on the older stuff, but in terms of modern entries, Witch from Mercury had me captivated.

The first Ghost in the Shell movie and Stand Alone Complex (including 2nd gig) are amazing and by far the best Ghost in the Shell media; highly recommend. The 1995 movie was a landmark for anime in the west as being a legitimate art form for adults. The soundtrack and animation are incredible to this day but the profound writing is what makes it a masterpiece. The original manga they are based on by Masamune Shiro and their other works were a big influence on the whole cyberpunk genre. The original GitS manga is very different and none of these are a direct adaptation but taking their own spin on things. The characters and world are mostly the same but that's about it and the tone is very different. The manga likes to explain all of the tech and has jokes so it's more lighthearted. The manga also has some explicit scenes meaning some versions of it are censored. The movies and Stand Alone Complex share their own continuity. I would recommend skipping the Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence movie and going from the first movie to Stand Alone Complex after.

If you want weird and cyberpunk, you should watch Serial Experiments Lain. Also, what your dad describes, describes tons of robot anime from the 70s. But Raideen may fit the bill with the name he mentions.
Also, Macross is... long. Each series also features a love triangle between MCs.
Macross: The first series is about the titular Macross ship, built on earth from the remains of an alien battle cruiser, and the fallout from that, and how Earth's culture stops the Space War. The MCs are a rookie ace pilot, a bridge officer, and an aspiring idol. It's her song that stops the war, which is why songs are a huge deal in the series.
Macross Plus: A 4-episode OVA or a movie, focused on two test pilots and their childhood friend who is the manager for an AI idol. The series focuses around the pilots' rivalry, their past, and issues with the AI.
Macross 7: Focuses on a band, Fire Bomber, who live on the 7th Long-Distance Colonization Fleet. It introduces the concept of 'song energy' as a specific type of energy source (it's more explained in further series), and the fleet's conflict with what amount to basically space demons.
Macross Zero: A prequel that focuses on a two pilots and a native girl on a mysterious island, and how the island is tied into the aliens that are coming to earth while UN and anti-UN forces are finishing up a world war. There's more, but that's probably the most succinct explanation I can give
Macross Frontier: Takes place on another colonization fleet, with the MCs being a galactic idol, a genki girl who wants to be an idol, and a pilot trainee who is the heir to a storied Kabuki house. It deals with their conflict, and the fleet's conflict with basically giant space insects and inter-fleet politics.
Macross Delta: Foscues on a colonized world in the Brisngr cluster, and a private military company that lives there. The main characters are split between an idol group who double as a military unit because of their song energy, and an aspiring idol from a specific planet, a freeter who gets dratfed into piloting, and a pilot in the PMC. It focuses on the conflict between two neighboring planets and interstellar politics. The magical girl part of it is the singers using hard light holograms to transform into costume, since they function both as military support and inspiration to people whose cities and planets are being attacked (plus they need the costumes for actual concerts).
But with all Macross series, the conflicts are multi-layered and dense, as they bounce from love triangle (which is the show's main focus, I believe even the directors said it) to war (and why war is bad). Overall they're all worth a watch.
Macross also has an in-universe movie, Do You Remember Love? which retells the main series story, and Macross Frontier and Delta also have sets of movies (but not in-universe movies) that retell their stories (and for Delta, a sequel movie) as well. Later series seem to run with mixed-events from both the series and movies. There's also tons of tie in manga, video games, and other media.

Also too, Macross anime's are pretty good. They are all very loosely connected but every show and movie/OVA is it's own thing. Music is at it's core and a key component of the story in every Macross. I believe the last one that got released was Macross Delta and and that one has a more magical girl vibe to it.
Macross is scifi with pretty good mecha/spaceship fights (the ships turn into mechs) and it's about civilization, politics and war in space and how music is the one thing connecting us all together, regardless of who you are (or what since they are different species of folks in Macross).
Every show and movie has it's own charm and I highly recommend you google search when each came out and enjoy a marathon of Macross for a bit.

Note the first opening was from either the 80s or 90s if I'm right while Macross Frontier (the openings with the short green haired girl, pink haired girl, and blue haired guy with the ponytail) was from the mid to late 2000s if I'm right and Marcoss Delta was the last of the 3 (think in the 2010s).
As for the Ghost in the Shell opening it looks like a game cause they used CG to make it rather than going the more hand drawn like route most anime go with, the anime itself doesn't use the CG look though and looks like the 2nd Ghost in the Shell opening.
I personally was never really able to get into either of them though so can't say how good or bad they are (saw some random episodes of Ghost in the shell on Cartoon Network's adult swim when I was a teenager, as for Macross only one I watched 5+ episodes of was Macross Frontier).

Glad to see you getting into Macross it was always my go to. Macross Delta came out in the mid to late 2010s, while the first series came out in the early 80s. In the U.S. Harmony Gold screwed us over creating a show called Robotech merging Macross, Southern Cross and Mospeada (3 separate anime series) into one series. In the late 90s to early 00s the split began to happen and Harmony Gold started creating separate Robotech series while Macross continued on in Japan. Here in the states we didn't get shows like Macross 7 and Macross Frontier on DVD or Blu. I'm not saying that Robotech was bad, far from it but Robotech was an empty shell of the series it stripped/joined to create it. Macross, Southern Cross and Mospeada were all amazing anime on their own.

I'm assuming your dad watched Voltron. I haven't seen it but it seems to be a show about a big robot that is created when 5 people in vehicles merge together. Voltron was created by Japan, but something that is very common back in the 80s, It was a rebranding of an anime in Japan called Beast King Go-Lion and for the second series, Armored Fleet Dairugger XV.
American localizers would take previously existing unrelated series and rebrand it into something more friendly to the local environment, especially to profit off of the Toy model craze (transformers)
This was done to Macross and 2 other series (Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, Genesis Climber MOSPEADA) that was turned into a show called Robotech.

It definitely won't have been Macross, it never got any representation in the UK until Macross Plus as part of Channel 4's midnight anime push. We didn't even get the late 80's 'Robotech' abomination that took Macross and 2 other animes, smushing them together, and ruining the franchise.... thank god.

RE: The 80s show your dad watched.
Voltron: A combination of two separate and distinct series by the American production company that bought the rights into a single show in order to have episodes to meet the syndication requirements of the day. The Lion team comes from "Beast King Go-Lion", and the Vehicle team comes from "Dairugger XV". (There was meant to be a third series adapted, "Albegas", which is where the three-robots-that-form-a-six-armed-robot team comes from.)

Oh, and if you want a mix of Magical Girl and Mecha then I have one suggestion for you: Magic Knights Rayearth. The OP is "Unyielding Wish" (in English), and this 1995 series still has HUGE followings (and the OP being covered gets HUGE pops in concert). The OG singer still does it best, and the video linked features her as a guest performance to another's cover of the song. ua-cam.com/video/A0m-7EaXU34/v-deo.html

It could be 'Mechander Robo'. It was a Mazinger type super robot that was all red. It had three jets combined into one and then docked into the back of the Robo to powerup. It used two round spiked shields on both sides of its arms as main weapons, it equivalent to the Mazinger rocket punch. It aired in the late 1970's internationally and was also dubbed in English.

And you'll never guess who did most of the music for the show. That's right, Yoko Kanno. Which brings me to an idea for a video. Do like a feature for one specific artist or group.

Both the Macross Frontier (the ones with the idols singing) and Macross Delta are fairly recent series. The only old Macross opening you listened to was from Macross 7, which was from the mid-90s. that one was with the guy singing. Macross has music as a very important element, along with the space battles. They aren't magical girls, but idol singers. Every Macross series is about the idol singers and space battles.

now I want to re-watch ghost in the shell in Netflix. My understanding or interpretation of the roles of songs in Macross is "ending wars with songs/music" at least the first series in 1984. Zentradi, aliens, didn't know music till they hear Linn Minmei singing.

  • @user-cq6my9mi3f
    @user-cq6my9mi3f 2 місяці тому +1

Macross is a story where songs are an important element.
The first Macross conveyed a song to end wars to aliens specializing in military power.
In Macross Seven, there is an enemy who steals people's life force, and songs are used as a countermeasure against it.
The subsequent games ``Macross F'' and ``Macross Delta'' are also stories in which idols appear on the battlefield with their pilots and defeat powerful enemies.
When it comes to robot anime, I personally love the story of how humans transcended the galaxy and became able to technologically manipulate black holes, and the song that depicts the outcome.
Macross has many famous songs, so if you like singing, this is a story you should definitely check out.

The first season is what I'm more familiar with and is what came to mind when hearing about an anime version of 'power rangers' where the piloted mechs combine together to form a larger mech.
    9:33 RANKA!!!!
If you do get into the Macross series, you may have heard the line 'the power of friendship' when describing some shows, Macross is the power of music.

what your dad watched is called "robotech" and yes, it's actually part of macros... when robotech was launched in the west it was 3 seperate yet similar anime spliced together and redubbed in english for american/english audiences with a new script, just using the visuals from the 3 different anime; (the three anime it was patched together from were, Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA); so yes, Robotech was in part, part of macross, and your father will find the original macross series really familiar as a lot of it was used as the core of "robotech"

If you ever need help with finding openings Luke, let me know. I sort of do anime openings (and endings) all the time as a game where I play a bunch of different ones and have people try to guess them. As a result, I have thousands of them just as files on my computer. I could easily drop off ones you're looking for if you'd like in Discord or something. I've been in your Discord server for a while, but didn't see any place for this.
Of course, if they're not easily found on UA-cam, that does make it more likely that their songs are often flagged for copyright, but reactions might still be possible if you're not full screening the video and pausing to talk/talking over parts of it. Or at the very least, might make for a good Patreon exclusive reaction.

Ghost in The Shell often abbreviated to GiTS is a long running franchise with several adaptations. There was a series which so far as I know never made it out of Japan but did influence a PS1 action game where you controil one of their spider tanks.
These you showed are from the Stand Alone Complex series which had 2 seasons and a movie follow up.
There is also a GiTS Arise which I think only had a few episodes/OVA but I have only found a few parts to it on Amazon Prime or similar before.
Then there are of course the two big movies which do not tie in with any of the series but are their own deal.
Stand Alone Complex is a great police procedural type series and well worth checking out. The animation is similar to what was shown in the second intro sequence here rather than the all CG rendered Inner Universe intro.
Both seasons are composed by Yoko Kanno often known for Cowbow Bebop and Macross Plus amongst a great many others are have amazing soundtracks.

Honestly there's alot of naked silhouettes in Anime openings . This isn't just in Macross Frontier openings, it's in other Anime openings too. You're Lie And April had naked silhouettes in the first opening song of both the main characters in that show. It's a Anime thing . I guess they do that for artistic purposes. In You're Lie And April, I think the naked silhouettes represents the soul . But that's just my interpretation of the 1st opening based from what I've watched of the show. The soul or human spirt of a person when it comes to music is a big theme I got from You're Lie In April.

The Anime your dad watch is probably Getta Robo. It has 3 plane (jet) that depending the order they combine in would form a different robot. The main robot is red.
    Original: ua-cam.com/video/W6ahWjlP3q4/v-deo.html
    They've made new one
Macross was suppose to be a romance focus mech story, that has a love triangle. One of the heroine is a singer, and her song played a major part in the story. That line of meta continued till they now just make it a mech anime with pop idol.
If you are wanting to watch Macross, then I suggest the Movie for the original, Macross: Do you Remember Love, then I would move to Macross Plus, Macross Zero, then the 2 Macross Frontier Movies. In that order.

I remember first time hearing the song in utter disbelief that my native language is in the anime opening. Back then it was kinda mindblowing.
I am not sure you will enjoy the GitS as it is a more phylosophical and deep slowburner with noir-cyberpunk detective investigations and discussions about society, technology and the meaning of being human. You should give it a try but it feels very different to the genres you usually like in anime.
