The reason the anime gets darker is because of Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Why not react to "how Neon Genesis Evangelion altered the anime forever" if you are not planning to watch the series.

Doraemon is basically Japanese Mickey Mouse. Very well known. Also Dr. Slump, the one you said is Dragonball animation vibes is because they are created by the same person. Dr. Slump was made before Dragonball and the creator even put the doctor slump characters in a crossover in dragon ball.

I know Sazae-san is up there, but there's some that dwarf even it in either how long it has been running or how many episodes there are. It being the longest running animated show is accurate though

"Kimba the white Lion" -- "Is that the Japanese Lion King?" :) -- Disney ripped it off from Japan. Oh wait. "adapted it and didn't give credit" :) Edit: -- you've probably heard the theme from Gatchaman because about 5-10 years later, it was dubbed and adapted and shown in America. I watched it as a kid. It was known as "Battle of the Planets". Also "Space Battleship Yamato" was dubbed and shown in America as "Star Blazers". Watched that one too. :)

Fun fact sazae san (1969) is still airing to this day. I'm pretty sure it's the longest anime to ever exist. It's getting close to reaching 8000 episodes so roughly 7-8x the length of one piece.

    • @OrionKaelinClips
      @OrionKaelinClips Місяць тому +24

Yes and no. Yes it still has more episodes than One Piece but its not really "8,000" episodes worth of run time. That number comes from the distinct "segments" it has which each run about 10 minutes, usually 2 per episode. In terms of comparative run time for a 20 or so minute episode like other anime it more like 2,640 episodes. Still over 2x more than One Piece, but not 7-8x by runtime.
      Very impressive still.

Love Doraemon!! Its such a fun show! The main premise is that Doraemon(who is a cat robot)comes from the future to help his owner's grandfather as kid make better choices for his life so it wont be miserable later lol. Doraemon uses gadgets from the future to help him out(he keeps all his gadgets in a pocket on his tummy). Its episodic and doesnt really follow a set story, but its super fun and hilarious. The orginal series ran from 1979 to 2005 and the new series has been running since 2005. There is also an English dub that ran on Disney XD from 2014 to 2017. You're way too young Luke, but Gatchaman was screened in the UK as a heavily edited US version called "Battle of the Planets"! (Essential viewing when I was growing up, though a 'Monster/Battle of the week' show.)
A few other points - Future Boy Conan was an early project involving the great Hayao Miyazaki; and the original Macross is actually a pretty good show that actually delves into some dark corners (but especially if you can find the full original version, not the 'Robotech' dubbed version - with respectful apologies to those who preferred the latter!)
Oh, and these days it looks heavily dated, but Princess Knight really kicked off the trend for strong female leads.

No way you don’t know Heidi 😭 Don’t get banished now Luke
6:50 Fun fact you might recognize this as Subarus ring tone in Re:Zero. Another fun fact the dog in a dog of Flanders is called Patrasche as well this is where Re:Zero’s writer got the inspiration from and the staff at white fox went looking for old flip phones to turn it into a ringtone to make that connection
About the development of animation in general, like with everything in the world it hugely benefited from digitalization, though studios still do a mix of digital and hand drawn animation especially veterans sticking to the roots. Stuff like 3D / CGI also caused a huge leap (when used properly). For example Mappa has a whole CGI branch and Ufotable who did Fate Stay Night ULBW and Demon Slayer perfected their Blending of 2D characters with 3D backgrounds and elements. In general the anime industry is spread much more thin now though, due to low pay (they get cuts for frames of animation not a set amount of money for working hours) and the popularity of it with, more and more companies trying to just pump out as many anime as they can, completely disregarding the human aspect of the staff at the studios they contract to do the actual work
That’s why even when you’re joking about wanting a series sooner than it’s supposed to air, I’m always saying just let them cook bc even with the time they have animation is actual hard work. Just one frame gets drawn 3 times till the final result we see comes about, so every anime you watched probably had a rough draft of the animation, then a draft outlining the shadows and colors and then yet another time they draw over it for the finished key frame that ends up in the Anime

26:50 May look like that because of the openings, Luke, but actually some were MUCH darker and violent even though they were tagged as being for a younger audience. *Fist of the North Star* (9:42) was pure brutality with people literally exploding, getting sliced into mincemeat, just a lot of death. *Saint Seiya* (10:13) has fights to the death one after another non-stop. *Dragon Ball Z* (10:57) has a lot of geno&%de and a villain that should be in a horror movie. *Yu Yu Hakusho* (12:29), same author of HunterXHunter, is one of the most brutal anime of the 90s, with plenty of body horror on top of it. *Basically what I'm trying to say is, action anime in the 80s and 90s had an amount of violence that was chill for us at the time, but would likely shock people nowadays.*
*In fact, I would say JJK is the closest thing to Yu Yu Hakusho's level and style of violence I've seen in recent years. But that's just my opinion.*

It's also an example of on the fly adjustment since the alien girl introduced in episode 1 as a one off antagoinst was so well received that she had to be brought back immediately, after which it took a bit of back and forth to settle onto how her role worked. As far as you watching it, if you have hi-dive check out the remake, it compresses a few things, and smoothes over some 80's stuff, but it's got a lot of the dynamic.
Also regarding Cutie Honey, at the very least you should look into the various openings. Lots of variety from the origional 70's opening, the 80's RE: Cutey Honey, the 90's Cutey Honey Flash, the 2000's Shin Cutey Honey and the live action verions Cutey Honey: The Live. Oh plus there's the Cutey honey Universe, don't feel compelled look to hard at that one.

there was actually a ton of influence back and forth between western animation and Japanese animation back in the day. in particular, a lot of the really really early anime stuff bears a huge resemblance to early disney, as well as early cartoons in general, in like the early mickey mouse/tom and jerry/betty boop/loony toons type era. Japanese animation has always had its own distinct stylistic leanings, which led to such a heavy branch off into the type of styles we see in anime today, which aren't common in the west unless western animators are trying to evoke that style in particular. but back in the day, everything flowed a lot more freely in terms of style and influence.
also, others have already pointed out that Dr. Slump is done by Akira Toriyama aka the guy who did Dragon Ball, but also... Yu Yu Hakusho is done by Yoshihiro Togashi, aka the guy who did Hunter x Hunter!
oh, and about Cardcaptor Sakura... that one is by CLAMP, which is a group of women who all create manga together under that pen name. they're responsible for a ton of really iconic titles... Cardcaptor Sakura is one of theirs, but it's on the more child friendly end. it's very episodic, very slice-of-life, and I think probably the best thing about it is how calm and atmospheric it is. like, it almost kind of makes you feel nostalgic for a place you've never been. it's a good one to wind down with, but you have to kind of want to do that, otherwise it's probably not going to appeal that much.
but not all of CLAMP's work is like this. they have a huge range... Magic Knight Rayearth, Chobits, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, xxxHolic, Angelic Layer... they're even (in part) responsible for Code Geass! they're kind of known for doing stylistically distinct and gorgeously designed manga that are, in my opinion, finicky to adapt to animation because of the hyper detailed aesthetic. (seriously, just look up "CLAMP manga pages" if you want a visual treat... I think Cardcaptor Sakura is more worth it as a manga for that alone.) and they're also known for doing stories that delve into heavy drama, and range from sweet but melancholic, to downright tragic in some of their darker works.
also, I'm mildly grumpy that this video skipped Revolutionary Girl Utena again! that opening is so iconic, and the series is so well done... it still has so much relevance, like, you'll see whole channels devoted to making hours-long youtube essays about this show, even currently right now, because the subject matter it tackled was so ahead of its time. I just really can't praise it enough. idk if Utena technically qualifies as a magical girl or not (the show is a very unconventional representative of the genre if it does count) but if she counts, this could be the magical girl show for you. it's definitely steeped in enough metaphor and symbolism to be infinitely interesting.
(mentioning those last two Golden Kamuy endings that we haven't done yet, just to keep that request current)

Yay! I remember recommending this one way back when I first watched your opening reactions. lol at the Kimba the Whote Lion comment about it being the "Japanese Lion King" cause they say The Lion King is based off on Kimba or even a Kimba rip-off. I don't think there's a proper answer online about it though if it's true.
Gegege no Kitaro is a story that revolves around spirits and creatures of Japanese folklore. It's had several remakes and all uses the same theme song only sung by different groups/people. Sazae-san from 1969 is still onging today by the way. One of the, and probably is, the longest running anime ever. Like the Kitaro anime, Cutie Honey had also been remade many times and most have the same OP just sung differently a bit (and yeah, they're all fanservice-y lol).
Heidi is based off a foreign book (a lot of anime from back then were based on western novels) and I actually got to watch this one as a kid when it aired here in the Philippines! The only show that made me wish I could live in the mountains lol. Doraemon is a pretty popular series and the movie "Stand by Me" actually made me cry lol. Captain Tsubasa is a popular sport anime and apparently it was the inspiration for a lot of famous athletes irl to get into the sport in the first place. No Game No Life is fairly popular actually and many of us are still waiting for season 2 (Hey, never lose hope! We'll never know...).
Shounen anime had gotten more popular over the years so it might be why there's more anime produced of that genre (recently, more and more are reincarnation isekai stories cause it's what sells). There have been a lot of dark series in the past as well btu they're not something everyone watched especially at the time where anime isn't mainstream so there's a lot that people would miss.
Inuyasha OPs and EDs are all really good! I hope you get to see all of them someday.

Lol watching this, I realize there are some hidden gems people aren't telling you to watch that you ABSOLUTELY need to watch at one point. I think you may need to figure out how to get around to watching some of these because they are absolutely phenomenal animes that have been lost to time. I imagine much of your audience could either be new to anime also or a bit on the younger side (I'm 29 myself) so they likely just don't know what absolute gems some of these other animes are and probably wouldn't vote for them.
The most notable ones I could pick out were:
YuYu Hakusho - First off, one of the best anime openings of all time even today. Second, it's a CLASSIC among even the classics. For some people it does fall off a bit in the 2nd half but I still think it's absolutely worth the watch and it has some of the best anime moments of all time.
Ruroni Kenshin - Once again a CLASSIC however I will fully admit the anime probably hasn't aged well on this one. Still though, it has some of the best, most grounded sword choreography and the story itself is still great.
Naruto - you will LOVE Naruto once you get around to it. dont know how it hasn't won yet tbh. This isn't a hidden gem at all but I'm still calling it out lmao
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - This one is what inspired me to start writing this comment. I'm not fully sure how you are about slice of life anime but this anime was at one point a forerunner for that genre and I'm going to say it even influenced many other animes that came after it in terms of how animes typically deal with character dynamics and development. I'm not even sure it's possible to fully appreciate this one since so anime now do what it was doing back then (absolutely still worth the watch though) but it's an absolutely special anime. At one point it was so popular that it created an entire otaku "religion" called Haruhism LOL another reason it's special is because of how experimental it was despite coming across as a very standard anime. Some parts of the experiment were great while others not so great (Endless Eight whew) but regardless this is absolute hidden gem of an anime (feels strange saying that considering it used to be so popular) and will always remain one of my personal favorites.
Gurren Lagann - if you enjoy the opening then you'll probably enjoy the anime. Again, for some people it falls off in the 2nd half but it's absolutely still worth the watch.
Clannad/Clannad AS - IT HURTS BUT IT'S SO WORTH IT. Just a bit of a warning though, the 1st season which is just Clannad is a lot more slice of lifey so for some people there are times it drags on but it's still plenty emotional in it's own right. The 2nd season which is Clannad After Story is where the story really shines and it has some of the most emotional anime moments of all time. This anime actually changed my life.
Toradora - another hidden gem of an anime. The opening I'll admit isn't anything to really write home about but the actual anime has some of the best DRAMA I've seen in an anime.
Angel Beats - lol angel beats is an interesting one because it can be a bit divisive. A lot of people can't get used to it's whacky humor but if you can, then what you get is once again one of the most emotional stories ever told in an anime. I happened to watch this one around the time I was graduating high school and ... well let's just say I was an emotional wreck during that entire time in my life.

suzumiya especialy was basically the Otaku anime of the 2010s. every manga fan was aware of it and people would recreate the dance in it.

A few words on a bunch of these:
Kimba the White Lion is actually what Lion King was hugely inspired by. It's basically the same story, really.
Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro is a show featuring Yokai, basically spirits and monsters from Japanese folklore. It also had a recent revival.
Attack No 1 I actually haver seen. One of only two sports anime I ever watched, cause the German dub was on TV back when I was a kid.
Heidi also was on TV here in German dub back in a day. It's a classic story about a Girl called Heidi living in the Swiss alps with her Grandpa.
Dr. Slump giving you Dragon Ball vibes is correct, it's by the same author. The late great Akira Toriyama.
Nadia: The Secret off Blue Water, and Sailor Moon as well also were on TV in German dub here in the 90s.
Oh man, Shin-chan. I also watched that in dub back then on TV. Such an absolutely weird show.
YES CONAN! I love that show so much! This has been on the Anime opening vote for the last 5 times for sure. Just always gets second place.
The Pokemon Opening you heard was the Japanese first opening. The English one you quoted got used in almost every international dub.
YuGiOh is probably the only Anime where I absolutely prefer the international dub opening to the JP openings.
Oh man, Love Hina! That show is hilarious. One of the first binge watches I did on a recommendation from a friend
INUYASHA! Another one I love. I so wish you could watch that show. Same for Ranma 1/2 that was in this earlier on. Both by the same author as Urusei Yatsura. Rumiko Takahashi. I love her stuff.
Clannad definitely needs to be a stream series at some point. We want to see you cry. :)

I actually watched and really enjoyed the 1960s Gegege no Kitaro, as well as its more modern remakes, there's been a new version each decade
And yeah, I think you should react to the openings of Cutie Honey.
There was also basically a new version almost every decade.
Not joking, but the manga and its creator, Go Nagai (who also created Mazinger Z and Devilman) started a minor sexual revolution in Japan.
And Urusei Yatsura basically finished what Cutie Honey started, pretty much making anime what it is today
Also same creator who did Urusei Yatsura also did Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha
If you want to watch Urusei Yatsura, there is a modern remake currently ongoing (I think you already reacted to that version's openings)
Speaking of which, I'd like to see you react to the openings of the original version.
There are technically 8 openings, 6 for the TV show, and 2 for the OVA (episodes that were released straight to home video)
Dr. Slump was by the same creator as Dragon Ball. May he rest in peace.
YuYu Hakusho is actually by the same creator as Hunter X Hunter
also, the creator of Hunter X Hunter and YuYu Hakusho is married to the creator of Sailor Moon
The Pokemon opening you are referring to is the US opening
Before the 2010s, it was a common practice for the USA to make their own openings when importing anime.
Same with other countries like Germany or Mexico, Brazil. There is a whole rabbit hole of international anime openings.
And yes, you should totally react to the 90s Hunter X Hunter openings.
Unlike the remake, they are actually different songs.

The 60s/70s stuff I didn't really watch, but there are a lot of the older shows that I had at least heard of. (Including Astro Boy.)
I think there was a lot of mech anime in the 70s/80s because it was the era of making TV shows in order to sell toys, or in the case of Macross and probably Gundam, collectable figures/model kits. Overall, this video features more of the anime that I've heard about in the US, so a lot of stuff I've heard of or may know things about them even if I haven't watched them. Mazinger Z however I saw on TV as Tranzor Z as a kid, and they had an entirely different opening for it in the US. Same with Goshogun/Macron 1.

That was the classic japanese sports uniform for girls for several decades in japan.
Some say it has its advantages regarding movement.
I am not much into sport myself, so I could not confirm if that has any kind of advantage.
The only other thing I know is that the classic japanese school swimsuit for girls which also became its own meme is basically japans old design for their olympia swimsuits.
It was japans high performance design back in the day until olympia committee decided to create unifying rules for this kinda stuff.

Truly shows how much things have changed over the years and decades. Each period has its gems and it is cuite clear how much music has evolved and become a more important part too.
And even though there are absolutely great shows in past years. I do have to say that the late 80s to 2010 era was very special. There are so many great anime shows from that period. Really miss those ones.
I highly recommend trying to watch more from that period of time if given the chance. The animation can feel old at times for some of them but that is not an issue at all. The pacing, visuals and stories / themes have their own charm.
Oh and the focus on more action is definitely due to improved animation possibilities. But I also think that another reason is simply the shorter attention span of modern viewership. These days there needs to be that hook to keep people watching. So it's either action, shocking story moments, drama, intrigue etc.
Older series were able to survive with a more slow and relaxed pace hence why talking, moments just showing the environment and slice of life themes were very common to be the focus or at least fill out a series at times from the key moments.
    PS:
At 14:00, the "Ruroni Kenshin" is a good old samurai themed anime from the 90s originally. It has the normal anime season content but also movies and OVA's (mini series / movie length) releases. Alternative name for the series / some of the releases is "Samurai X".
    OVA "Trust & Betrayal"
** A really good experience that I highly recommend.
** Tells the origin of the main character.
** Brutal and has blood so be warned but has one of the most memorable anime stories (for me at least) ever since I saw them in the early 2000s on vhs.
    The anime series
** More tame and focuses on not killing (interesting concept for a samurai series)
** Happens after the "The Motion Picture" and "Trust & Betrayal" stories even though the series was released earlier.
    "The Motion Picture"
** Extra movie with characters from the series.
    The OVA "Reflection"
** Ending for the story after the anime series.
    Recent 2023 anime series
** A retelling of the anime series story.
** What I understand is that this is more accurate to the original manga. But I was not able to watch it after a few episodes as the original anime is my canon version for the series.

This is a great video with a great selection of shows. Only downside is some of the years they skipped.
I’m not sure its correct to say that older anime are less “dark.” Japanese animation has always had a tendency to address a wider range of themes and darker subject matter than western animation. Some of those old mech and general sci-fi shows were ridiculously violent. However, it is definitely true that “battle shonen” fighting shows starting with Dragonball became the most popular genre and people may have become more comfortable over time with more violence and fights in the openings themselves.
I definitely want you to react to the English openings of stuff like Dragonball Z and Pokemon.
4:40 you are correct in the 60s and 70s Japanese animation was inspired heavily by American shows especially Disney's. Astro Boy is generally credited with being the first show to have the distinctive "anime" style but it took time for that style to become more standard at home let alone to take a big global market share of entertainment. However, the copying went both ways, as Disney took a lot from Kimba the White Lion when they made Lion King. In Japan though anime just means "animation" so foreign shows like the Simpsons or Disney moves would also be called "anime" in Japan even though us foreigners find that strange.
8:35 “Dragonball animation” well good recognition Dr. Slump was the first successful series by Akira Toriyama the creator of Dragonball.
The oldest of these I have personally watched a full episode of was “Space Battleship Yamato” (1974). The oldest I have watched a full season of is the original Gundam(1979). The first I recognize watching as a child in 90’s was Dragonball Z(1989) because the original Dragonball was as far as I know never broadcast on the channels I had access to.
On music its interesting the 80's and before music feels old/classical to me, its fine but there are few I'd put on a playlist. The 90's music is a bit hit or miss but I definately appreciate many of them. Starting in 2000 though I'm putting almost every single song in the video on a playlist regardless of whether I like the show or not. Its hard to tell how much of that is anything objective and how much is just the age I grew up influencing me.

There were definitely a few I expected to see like GTO that weren't there, but there isn't really a way to include everything that deserves it. I would love to see you do more endings reactions. I know you have said that endings don't get as many views as openings, but you have quite a few endings reactions that have done quite well. For instance, chainsaw man has 168k views, Overlord 221k, Re:Zero 74k, Hunter X Hunter 80k to name just a few. Fairy tail even has 30k views, which isn't a ton, but compared to a lot of openings reactions its not that bad.

Seriously, still on the endings? I checked, and the Fairy Tail endings video you did (that you reference here) got 30k views. Then I checked your video list. Of your last 100 videos (not counting the ones released today), 10 of them got more than 30k views. So it's still in your top 10% videos. How is this "nobody watches this"?
And there's the usual addendum that most people that complain about a lack of endings generally expect you do to endings together with the openings (assuming you're not doing a series with dozens of openings/endings), not require an entirely separate vote to get them shown. It's hard enough to get _anything_ through a popularity vote. To get it through _twice?_

Luke, found a couple of openings videos on here that have quite a few songs I'm pretty sure you haven't heard yet ... "My Top 150 Anime Openings of All Time" by Boss 307 and a Seinen Openings video by TopAnimeWeekly. They both have a ton of songs you most likely have never heard/openings you've never seen but you'd most likely have to split them in parts as usual due to length. The Boss 307 vid is 150 songs and I can't recall if the TopAnimeWeekly one is 50 or 100 songs but you'll know by the word Seinen in the title. Seinen is young adult to adult anime of which you've already seen quite a few. Both have some amazing videos with not so often heard OPs/EDs mixed in with the top ones.

The biggest problem with the 90's Berserk adaptation is that it's basically just the backstory for the manga, it sets up the core storyline of the manga, and then stops at a massive cliffhanger and never continued. The CG followup attempts are all best left forgotten... I would say, check out the 90s Show, and it seems like it's up your alley, try the manga as well.

*Future Boy Conan* was directed and co-written by Hayao Miyazaki (the living anime legend). There are elements from this series that can be found in his third directorial film "Laputa: Castle In The Sky" (1986). I've watched this in its entirety and it's pretty amazing. I'd also recommend watching Laputa: Castle In The Sky. It is a great movie.
*Dr. Slump* was created by Akira Toriyama (RIP) who also created Dragon Ball, so your senses were correct.
*Urusei Yatsura* IS about an alien named Lum who because of ridiculous circumstances comes to believe that the protagonist (Ataru, a high school-aged boy who is a letch) is in love with her, and she constantly foils his attempts to see other girls/women. Along the way, other "strange" aliens drop in and complicate their lives. Rumiko Takahashi (who also created Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha) wrote and drew the manga.
You should at least watch the OP for *Nadia: The Secret Of Blue Water.* The ED is good too. It was written and produced by the same people who made Neon Genesis Evangelion.
