MOSQUITO Spray The Paul Harvey Way; We'll see!

- In this fun video, at the request of the spousal unit, I experiment with a mosquito spray she found online which someone had posted. Being the skeptic that I am, I searched but did not find much on the recipe. So, why not?
Anyways, you will see near the end of the video, I had a surprise visitor.
UPDATE: Next day, I could not get the smell off the wooden spoon and the solution ruined the plastic pitcher. I recommend using a glass bowl and a metal serving spoon. Still no mosquitoes after 1 day.

I live in Japan (not that it matters) and my yard is about 5 times the size of a normal person's yard. every year, lots of mosquitos. . I sprayed once 2 weeks ago and I'm very surprised with the results. even after a few days of good rain, it still seems to be working great. I have only seen a couple of mosquitos. I made some more today but with rain coming the next two days, I will wait and spray later. So far, works freaking awesome!!!! For any of you that is skeptical, what will it hurt for you to give it try? the price of 3 beers and a $1.50 or so for a bottle of mouthwash? C'mon!
Way to go!
Wonder if you substituted Brewers Yeast for the beer. If it would work as good.
@@charlescoker7752 I like it, a cheaper version of the recipe.
@@charlescoker7752 I would think not, because the recipe calls for stale beer which would say to me that you don't want the rising effect of the beer foam or what the yeast would do. But hey, I remember Paul Harvey and many many people believed his wird about sonething was gospel. This recipe certainly works.
It does work wonders. You can even put it in a hand held spray bottle and spray around you wherever you go! 👍🌝❤️
Even though this video leaves a lot to be desired, (Like results??), at least some people who have tried it responded below! Sounds like it works! Doesn't surprise me, Paul Harvey was great!!
YES!!! it really works! dont understand how, but so what! heating some of the beer or mouthwash up helps dissolve the salt better. been using this for about 2 yrs now. i just put it in a spray bottle and spray up in the air anywhere im going to be outside. when i spray front yard, they retreat to backyard, so ill just carry it around to spray everywhere. then i guess they go to neighbors , theyre gone from me and mine.:)
I tried this and I really wanted it to work, but I really don't think it did. Created the recipe using 3 miller lite beers that were open for several hours, equate blue mint mouthwash (however this did indicate on the bottle there was no alcohol in the mouthwash), and epsom salt with lavender oil (as that's all they had at walmart). When I mixed this, I worked the solution really well to dissolve the salt and sprayed my entire backyard. What am I doing wrong? Could this take several applications to work well?
wish i knew. i dont know how far skeeters fly. could they be coming from elsewhere? standing water? so many variables.
Always possible. I do have some thick brush behind my house that I didn't have enough solution to treat. I may focus on that this next round. Also have some leaves to clear out under my deck. My neighbor's yard is a complete wreck so I can only imagine how his disaster area is contributing to our frustration.
To Ms. Kelly Nash, possibly the non alcoholic mouthwash but there's still some booze in your beer..calculate amount of alcohol in mouth wash and add ( rubbing alcohol )?
😀
it works! I spray the bushes in front of my porch and only have to do this every 60-90 days 😉👍 I have a 5 gallon pump sprayer and spray around my flowers and plants does not harm them! But you have to do it when you are not expecting rain! And not do it the day after it rains...aim for a dry day for it to really coat the ground and soil😉👋
yahoooo!

I've like this recipe. I used it in a hose end sprayer. Early morning or at dusk. With a couple golf balls in it to help keep it mixed up. Thanks for the video.
I don't know about most of the ingredients, but I would say it's the beer that did it. I knew someone who used to drink a bunch of beer the night before going out into the boonies to keep the mosquitoes away. I used to give my dogs brewers yeast (good for humans, too) every day and that kept the fleas and ticks off.
My sisters friend drinks beer every day and mosquitos don't bite or bother him at all.
I'm going to try this tomorrow in mosquito alley (Arkansas). Thank you for doing this video!!
Hey! Good luck tomorrow Emily. It did work for us; however, someone answered with a suggestion to boil the beer contents and salt to dissolve everything and then have now slush. I will try that this yea.
did it work?
This is incredible spray. ! I've used this going on 5 years.! It seems to keep flys away too
IKR!
The rabbit might get drunk, but at least he will have minty fresh breath.
You have to rinse your sprayer out completely, the metal parts in the sprayer will rust due to the salt.
I made this solution but also added lavender essential oil to it and It works SO well. Sprayed it all over my backyard. Grass, bushes, trees, deck, gazebo, around the pool. The day before my son was bit 5 times and after using this he didn't get bitten once.
Really
That's a fact...
My husband is always the one to get bit and we could never ever sit on the porcb until I made this recipe a few years ago. Now we don't even hear them buzzing around, they are gone.
I have lavender epson salt. Do you think that would be ok?
@@stevenspencer6447 yeah!
The community here in Sun Lakes has some problems with biters. I mixed this stuff up over a month ago and hav had very few biters this year. I stopped at my neighbors a few houses down this morning and was bitten 3 times in 5 minute. I guess I can say it is working.
And you sent all the bugs to your neighbors lol
@@bostongal24 No, Just kept them there.
It certainly works. Honestly we listened to Paul Harvey growing up and back then I don't think he ever said or advertised anything he didn't believe in. Believe it, his word was true to fact. I use this mix and yes it takes a while to get it dissolved. I never skim off any of the foam or anything, it's part of the brew mixing with the epsom salt, sooooo. I have been using a few years and it works like magic. Yes a couple of times during the summer. I don't usually spray out in the yard away from the house because when it rains, it just dissipates and it kinda seems like a waste.
Is that why mosquitoes atract to blue light! Blue mouth wash?
Try melting ebson salt in warm water first and let stand then add rest
If you let the ingredients sit for a while after you stir the first time the salt will dissolve on its own just stir again before you put it in your sprayer I use it every year my dog lot it works great you can see it kill the bugs let it sit for a while then go back and you can tell it worked great use a rubber spatula to stir salt works so much better than wooden spoon. I used both
Fluids only can absorb so much solids and they become full ... so more some extra fluid can be added to complete the absorption ... ?
It works folks....I made mine slightly different...3/4 filled my 1 gallon sprayer with warm water to dissolve the Epsom salts(Dr.Teals peppermint salts...I liked the smell lol) Then I added the 'Cheap blue mouthwash', but used 1/2 cup rubbing alcohol because I didn't have stale beer....I sprayed the yard area, bushes, grass etc where I walk the doggies....6 weeks later only an occasional skeeter, after all, we are outside folks, so they do zero in once in a while lol...Good luck
Thanks Buzz! Such a nice vid then NO results mentioned🤨🤨🤨your comment helped
Nice thanks!
Going to try and will update if i remember. Skeeters were bad the other night in garage and at fire. Live in Michigan so we grow em big here
Excellent! Yes, I lived up there for a few years, and they are bigger than the average skeeter for sure.
Jon Knoll did it work? We're near Chicago. Hungry blood suckers over here this summer.
I find using original gold color Listerine works best. And does work 👍
This works great. I mix it up every year. I also use just a cheap spray bottle from a Dollar store. I've made batches for friends and family and gave it to them to use plus included the recipe. It's affectionately known as "witches brew" lol! Definitely a good mosquito repellent. Safe to use. I live on a farm and never have a problem with mosquitos.
Glad to hear, thanks for sharing.
Verona Martin I will try, then. I hate mosquitoes and they always seem to bite me and know one else when friends are around for gathering ..I don't get it.
I'll give this A Go! Best friend , (wife), just brought it home tonight. And am in NC after our hurricane, and we live 30 yards from a big lake. Skeeters are huge and numerous now.
Bike Mann Has this been working for you?
Hi, I sprayed my yard and house all over with bifen.... I sprayed the patio light right outside my door..... so far so good with mosquitos and keeping bugs out, but tonight, 6 days after spraying (no rain for 48 hours after I sprayed) when I was out at night with patio light on, the flies were BAD right at the light... swarming the light.... I sprayed the light and surrounding part of the house by the light... this was the 1st time since I sprayed that I went outside with patio light on..... will the flies that kept hitting the light eventually die off from the residual of the bifen it (7.9%) or is bifen just not effective for flies that are attracted to the light?
I think the best way to make that Epsom salt dissolve is make sure all the ingredients are warm heat them up a little bit
Looking forward to trying it. I designed, built and manage a community park in Brooklyn and the mosquitos are in full force. I will be applying the mixture this evening. Love the responses. I like that you remained skeptical, though happy with the results of the moment. Now that it's a year later, what is your assessment now?
July almost done, and I have not done a new application. Maybe I can wait till next year, because no skeeters yet. Weird that I am still skeptical.
Heard about this from a friend today. He mixes all of that to make a 2 gallon sprayer. That might explain why yours did not all disolve. He sprays his yard 2 times per year and claims to not have any mosquitos. Can't wait to try this at home this coming week.
Did it work for you?
To dissolve epsom salt quickly the ratio for complete saturation is 1/2 cup of salt to 1/2 cup of very hot water. Anything more than 1/2 cup of salt to 1/2 cup of water (or liquid) would result in undissolved salt particles. So if you mix the salt with a warmer liquid solution this will avoid the residue issue.
Just keep in mind that there's no pure water included in the base ingredients for this recipe. Both the mouthwash and the beer are water-based, but already have constituents dissolved in them. This means you will need MORE mouthwash & Beer than the water/salt ratio you suggest. I would guess beer will hold more salt than mouthwash....but it would take some experimenting to figure out the best ratio of the 3 ingredients. Also note, heat (and motion/stirring-shaking) helps expedite dissolution, but doesn't make a liquid absorb more solids/salt.
You can buy epson salts that are lavender scented. Mosquitos hate the smell.
Most EXCELLENT idea.
I bought mint epsom they hate that too
Does it work on lawns?
I just mixed up this concoction or as it's better known : Paul Harvey's Mosquito Repellant.
I'm hoping it yields some great results.
Will update soon!
Thanks
second summer and still no skeeters here
And did it work?
I sprayed like 20 minutes ago and the skeets are gone. They were like full force eating me alive.
Shortest result of all time.
Did you use this method annnnnd, did it work or what? 😬
😀🤣
This works like a charm 😁
I used it every year...I keep all the scum though. Lol
It honestly works the best
6:01 - but it didn't get rid of BUGS bunny 🤣🤣🤣 good lord if that ain't the dad joke of the year
What does this do for tics?
Made it last year and it worked great will use again
Thanks for the confirmation Brenda. We had no sightings. But, I saw a rabbit enjoying the salad in the yard. For real!
Brenda Hartwell how much or big of a bottle of mouth wash do I use ?
does this solution attracts ant?
I do have to wonder about the effectiveness of mouthwash today opposed to Paul Harvey's era...most mouthwash no longer has alcohol in it.
The alcohol boils off too quickly to work for a season. The mint however would repel mosquitoes.
loved the video thanks for the info, how did it work out scene any mosquitoes lately?
Never saw a one the rest of the year. Yet, I am still skeptical.
Mity Mouse thanks@
never saw one but still skeptical . what's wrong with you ? you think they just went to Jamaica this year ?
G Packard 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Jamaica! Good one. I saw one at the book store yesterday. But it's time to spray as I planned by July. Gonna try a new step in the process as well. Thanks.
i would heat up the beer til it is warm and that should help dissolve salt fast i think
I bet you are right. Summer's coming.
Christine DAngelo I used room temp beer😉
A large jar with a lid. And shake it up.
I add a coffee filter to a funnel I buy at the dollar store. much better
It works
I’ve had two of those sprayers and both the original and the replacement continually clogged…and that was from standard weed killer with no sediment. The wand is garbage.
Does this keep pollinators away? Wondering if it is ok to use around my vegetable garden.
I am not qualified to answer that, but I never sprayed plants, just grass.
Wow, sound is so low! Hard to hear.
Update on how it worked? Further than day one that is...
lasted 2 summers.
How this work? I mean the science behind it?
Hmm. Repelling skeeters is a guessing game for me. I just know this worked.
I think the beer iscthe active ingredient that gets in the salt that enables it to stay longer with the ALCOHOL in mouthwash makes it vaporized
I wonder if I could just heat the beer in a pot and dissolve the salt.
I believe so.
Well, it's been almost 2 years. Did it work, have you reapply??
Well we move after the second summer. But for two summers I did not see any skeeters. I will definitely do that for my new house this summer.
@@Mity_Moose So did it work at the new house? Your video left a giant void of results.
can i use hazelnut oil to replace beer?
Why not
The foam- next time leave beer open for a day to allow it to go flat. 🙂
wouldn't warm water help dissolve the salts faster.
Phil UP6903 Yes
why didn't you show the results ?
Mity Mouse I just made this and sprayed our yard and porch, can't wait to see if this works.
I'm going to do just what you asked. I think it would be important to mention where skeeters might come from in my yard. Thanks.
Not used to these notes. I am trying to answer G Packard. I thought about your question on results. I need to address areas that skeeters can grow.
Mity Mouse did it work or not?????
did it work?
We dont have beer any alternative
not sure its alcohol but you could try near beer and rubbing alcohol.
you don't have to let all the salt dissolve just use a filter or strainer to pour the solution through.. bc chances are that much salt will never dissolve without more liquid
You need to add yeast
Look up Jerry Baker and his super garden/lawn tonic mixes. He has more mixes. And yes, they work. I've been using them for years.
what about wasps? does it help with that
Did not have a wasp problem, so, I cannot answer. But on skeeters it's great.
We'll see... See where? In your next video?
You are the first to notice that. Ha! Good eye. It worked for two summers, then we moved.
You want to dissolve all that salt? Make this stuff in a blender - or use a stick blender.
Can be used for body?
Hmm??? Never had that question. I would consult a doctor about putting anything on my skin.
Does this work for fleas and other bugs?
I have no idea. We have had success with "food grade" diatomaceous earth to roust fleas.
But yet you didn’t share the results
so judging by your comments... it did actually work? they are crazy this year!
saw zero skeeters after the spray. will try maybe next month.
My biggest question is what is the odor like? And does it linger? Cheap mouthwash and cheap stale beer does not seem like a pleasant odor combo.
did not smell bad. did not linger.
DOES IT KILL GRASS? AND DOES IT ATTRACT ANTS?
NICE!
Did it leave a blue residue on your patio?
no stains
This does leave a residue. After this dries, it leaves a white looking substance plus a sticky like appearance. Also this didn't work for us, not saying it won't, just didn't for me
Well did it work?
yep. for 2 yrs then we moved
NOT WORKING ON TINY MOSQUITOS THIS YEAR. I USE IT EVERY YEAR BUT THIS YEAR IT ITS " NOT" WORKING ????? I APPLIED IT TWICE......,IT WORKED ON BIG ONES BUT NOT LITTLE ONES ????
Ah bummer.
@@Mity_Moose I started just using straight salt and water omitting the beer and the mouthwash in my dog lot in the dirt that is working so much better on the little black ones. YAY My doggies say.
How big is a "big bottle of mouthwash"? Ounces?
50.7 fl.oz or 1.5 L
Joseph Wreen Just use the whole thing ..you killing skeeters for crying out loud..all the bushes cracks, holes etc..May need two big ass bottles for those bugger..I'll get 3 cheap bottles n make a 5gallon spray..spray entire place.
That didnt look like three 12oz beers?
Here in tx its always hot AND humid. Im also afraid of what it would smell like after the sun comes out... old dried up beer smells horrible
We were in tx when I tried this. I didn’t notice any smell. Had no skeeters all summer.
May I ask the brand of mouthwash you used?
cheap walmart
xanadu1jw just cheap brand of BLUE mouth wash....I get mine at the dollar store or dollar tree
Does the mouthwash need to have alcohol in it? I used cheap walmart brand (equate) and it mentioned no alcohol, also this spray didn't seem to work for us. Perhaps it's the brand I used?
I’m sorry, but what is stale beer?
No fiz.
Leave the bottles open for a day to sit on counter at room temperature before you use it.
to make "stale Beer" take any brand beer preferably a cheap beer and open the container it is in let it sit open until all the carbonation goes flat, I have a hunch Paul is telling us stale beer works best because stale or flat beer does not foam up when pouring and mixing, Hope this info helps
Does the beer have to be stale? How do I get the beer stale? Just leave it opened and out of the fridge?
Thanks. Answered my question. Open the beer and pour it into a bowl and leave it like that for 8 to 10 hours.
did it work?
Not sure! I keep thinking I'm going to see a skeeter. But we had company and we were outside a lot. Nobody complained that they got bit or even saw one for 5 days. I guess I will have to try it again next year. Still skeptical.
Update us, please. Its been nearly a year.
Trish, I had planned to respray this July. No hurries when there are no skeeters. But will make a new video based on some viewer comments on the production process. Hang on.
Misty Mouse so you spray once a year? Not me I will spray every month if I have too..they out most evening even off summers
One of the best CLICKBAIT titles I've seen.
hey do you say anything other than "i'm skeptical, still skeptical"? did you drink the stale beer huh?
Nope and nope.
Billie Bob Norton III 🤣🤣🤣
Settle Down Bevis!
@@danballard2132 Uh huhuh thstale beer thsucks
"big bottle mouthwash", okay give it to me in ounces😞😡
50.7 fl.oz or 1.5 L
And the results were???
No skeeters for two summers.
@mitymouse I tried this and I really wanted it to work, but I don't think it did, or I did something wrong or used the wrong ingredients.
Use regular, not lite beer. And let it get really stale and flat. Poor it into a bowl and let sit over night. The lavender in the epsom salts may be messing with the recipe. Try to find unscented. And a very large bottle of cheap blue mouthwash.
You don't give results?????
Somewhere in the comments it's there. But, we made it two years without skeeters.
Did this work??....I got skeeters bad!!..Please help!!...lol
Survival of the fatest outdoors.
I need help too😂😂!!! My Jingles feel like am getting Roast this summer😂😂😂
Where’s recipe?😂
19 seconds in video. Take a screen shot.
Does it work
This is the second summer without skeeters. But I have seen them swarming now. I'm gonna try to hold out for the approaching fall.
Can you at least tell if you saw a decline?
No skeeters in the second summer.
This does not work at all and stains concrete and paver stones. Save yourself the headache, expense and mess.
Paul Harvey also said Soy was good for you. He was wrong.
Does not work at all!
I tried this and it didn't work at all .. try showing how to do this maybe? If this was so good, don't you think we northerners would have known this. We are forever infested with mosquitos. You must have tame mosquitos cause they are wild and tough here. They sell garlic spray but it's extremely expensive ... like around $80.
Glad Hawkins .....I did the garlic spray......didn't work.
Glad Hawkins Maybe we need to steep some garlic over night n water and use that huh..maybe mix the garlic n this mouth rinse mix. Anything worth a shot now..these stinking skeeters getting on my last nerves
The north?! "Wild and tough" mosquitos? Lady, have you been to Texas, Louisiana and Florida?!
@@AngelaBice77 I used to live in Minnesota, land of 14,000 lakes, and they make jokes up there about the mosquito being the official state bird. I don't think it matters where in the USA you live, if conditions are right, you'll see big buggers.
What is the point if you don't post the results? Wasted time......
Sorry you wasted your time Magpie. I wanted to show the making of it and start some conversation. In the notes I did mention that we never saw a single skeeter.
Mity Mouse
Did you see or get bitten by mosquitoes prior to spraying?
That critical piece of info would be most helpful.
Yes wdtony. Living in Texas at the time and the threat of West Nile virus, the city spraying every summer, I purchased a bug zapper, and for 2 years it was inadequate. I did not see any skeeters for the two summers after the first spray. Then we moved. If you use this recipe, do what another commenter said (Kristine Dangelo), heat up the beer first to settle down the curdling. Let us know how it works for you.
Mity Mouse
I will. First I’ll need a control, so I’ll go without this summer and spray next summer. Then record the results. Or I may spray mid-summer and see if there’s a difference.
Gee Whizz wdtony, why not spend one day, night outside, just one and then treat your place. I hen one more night, day same shirtless time and compare!
I don't tune in to a UA-cam video to watch unprepared people show you how unknowledgeable, and unprepared they are.
You should have had cheesecloth, or used a coffee filter in a coffee filter holder over a bowl.
You should not have produced a video about experimentation, then not shown the results.
Does the spray do the job or not?
If so, how long does it last?
it's a hoax
Yeah! I'm still skeptical even though there are no skeeters yet.
it's not a hoax I've tried it it works better than those that have chemicals, plus you have that fresh smell. I even recommend. it to my aunt she loved it.
