The method you have decided to create ridding the mosquito's, I'd personally suggest that you guys shade over the top about 3,or 4 feet above.
For one thing your using a black container trashcan. It draws heat.
Another is that the trashcan is very close to the metal building. Heat radiates from the steel on hot day's.
So, together combination above, is creating very warm water for the fishes & the oxygen level depletes, suffocating them.
Standing water in a black container without oxygen, or circulation, is a death trap for them.
Perhaps, buy some water garden plants to float & help provide a little more oxygen.
I've watched many of your inspirational & knowledgeable videos today on July 4th. They were great ! Your both amazing 😁 !
Hopefully these suggestions save Gold Fish Lives !
Thanks, we stopped using the trash barrel a while ago and all the gold fish we tried keeping in it have died. 😒 We have a new water tub with one fish in it and it’s thriving!
love what you guys are doing. love from hamden, ct
to treat mosquito bites and ant bites. use a hot tea bag (I use chamomile tea bag) and dap it on while it's still hot. No more itching, immediately.
Get rid of any bromeliads on your property if present. They retain water between the leaves which is habitat for mosquito larvae. Good to hear from you again btw. :)
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll sacrifice my body to the mosquito gods to harvest the pineapple gods fruit.
@@ziggybender9125 Haha! That particular bromeliad doesn't retain that much water, so i guess they can be spared.
Have you considered good ol' mosquito fish ? Here in California my country vector control office gives them away for free. Like every thing else, Amazon also sells them. Building an eco system, as you know has challenges. Good luck and keep researching. You'll get there.
Great video I really enjoyed it.
We use "mosquito fish" in the horse pasture water troughs. Not sure what kind they are but they multiple in the ukubillions.
The rain PH when the volcano was pumping was mid 3's. It takes a lot to bring it back up to normal rain water (5 ish). Tilapia are damn near bullet proof. Mine are basically in a large puddle with no air and they are thriving. They do grow biger, but they can handle a high population density.
Yes I talked to a friend that tested his water at a 3 ph. He lives in Hawaiian Acres. There is about 1 inch thick of coral calcium at the bottom of our barrel so maybe it just needed a little more time. The one fish is still alive so maybe it finally stabilized.
Guys you might like to research these 2 ideas for killing the mosquito larvae in water containers.
I haven't tried these yet but my friend's father used the citric acid method all his gardening life in his rain barrels.
- little bit of citric acid in the water.
- drops of shampoo or dish-washing liquid in the water.
I send you much love and may Jesus Christ always be with you guys protecting you.
ps if you find these work for you, please let us know, thanks.
what if u circulate the water by pump or air diffuser
Good to c u 2 back...I had a thought that since the gasses let up, u, wouldn’t get such a pungent rain...I also had a thought that maybe the goldfish have a low tolerance...maybe u, would have more success if u changed the type of fish...a non invasive native type...your thoughts/actions on mosquitoe control make much sense...
Will you do an update on the mosquito situation?
Hope you guys are doing ok through the hurricane
Thank you 🙏
At our property in Volcano we planted some Citronella. It's a common ingredient in bug repellent and works ok.
Aside from the lemongrass, try planting Citronella, I think it's much better, though they probably come from the same grass family. It looks exactly like lemongrass but has a different smell like a citrusy aroma which I prefer and is well-known to be an anti-mosquito repellant. It is even called a Mosquito plant in some countries, and is made into oils, & bug spray, candles, wristband to ward-off mosquitos.
Yes definitely want to get some. They sell it at the market, just haven’t gotten any yet.
In Philippines they use small brush fires to keep mosquitoes away. The ash can be used to fertilize bananas.
Marigolds as well as mint and citronella plants.
Try Minnows, they're a very strong fish and they do a better job of eating the mosquitoes.
In our area the county uses mosquito fish . Have noticed some containers I have soaked some plant material for the dye pot and no mosquitoe larvae showed up, Sagebrush worked 1 time and have read of some plants that kill mosquito larvae. Read some experimenting with dilute borax solution (some plants are sensitive to boron !! ). If find a pH buffer ( makes it act more neutral) that doesnt hurt fish (wonder about milk of magnesia or epsom salts...)
I would cover the barrel with fiberglass window screening. It would keep mosquitoes, leaves, and other debris from entering.
Well, the idea is to have it open so the mosquitoes can lay their eggs in the water (and the fish eat the eggs or larvae before they hatch) thus hindering the lifecycle 🤓👍🏽
For fish, i think you will require more complex system. Biofilter to help on the ph, provide oxigen, etc. Or keep it closed, with no light (it produces algae). I will post later a video how i did it, (here we have a dengue issue, specifically close to my house :( )
Do you drink the catchment water that has the fish in it ? If not, where do u get your drinking water from?
Have you tried using other plants besides lemongrass yet?
If I moved back to Florida I plan to throw the herbal book at the bugs and plant every bug repelling and carnivorous plants around the property.
Try different type of hardy fish or mix kines...super helpful. Also, we had a pest control service in the jungles on kahaluu on Oahu...It was an organic spray over the general landscape that was formulated with garlic oil and maybe ginger too... It smelled like yummy Korean bbq after they sprayed...but it cut down on the critters in the water resavores in the stems of the lanscape plants and the neighboring property's standing water tubs..
@@OffGridHawaii Thank You...for all of your tips! You have no idea how much of an inspiration you two have been.
I love your hot water loop ♡
Where did u go?
small 12 volt water pump to circulate the water in a circle fashion in the barrel impeller would kill mosquito larvae and keep debris at the bottom center of the barrel easy to suck out and siphon with a garden hose other benefit is it's very difficult for mosquitoes to come and lay eggs on moving water, boat sump pump or a 12 volt Life well tank boat pump would work well all 12 volt and since you have solar system and Battery Bank it should work out to your advantage to keep mosquitoes out and fish I love it, we have a 50 gallon small Pond filled with mosquito fish we never feed them as they eat the algae and mosquitoes that happened to land and lay, for a while we cannot believe that we had mosquito larvae in there but come to find out our daughter was feeding fish flakes once we stop that feeding flakes the larvy was gone, problem solved, problem solved, just a thought guys enjoy your day looks beautiful there. Paul
Thank you for the comment paul! We do still want to make it easy for the mosquitos to lay the eggs in the barrel with the fish so that they won’t lay them other places. It’s like a trap.
OffGridHawaii very smart guys thinking outside of the barrel... stay safe guys, hurricane Lane looks like a monster may get whipped by the tail as it runs close to the Rock, still worried about the tents and some of the evacuees , tarps and greenhouses , very glad you have a bulletproof home
Put some limestone or other calcium rich rock in the rock bag hanging from the water collection device, and at the bottom of the barrel.
We added calcium carbonate / coral but never tested the ph so it could have not been enough. We will def experiment more with this 👍🏽🌴
I have to ask for Your safety, have You taken all precautions about the snails/ R L D. I have seen vids that say they can get into catchments and make You real sick.
Goldfish produce way too much waste. Maybe try planting some aquatic plants to help with water purity...try using guppies and ghost shrimp instead of goldfish. Goldfish get massive and this container size is much too small for them.
You can either put a layer of vegetable oil or put water lettuce on top of the water instead of worrying about supporting a habitat for fish.
I use frogs. They are local here and lay eggs like mosquitos in the water, but then they become older tadpoles, they eat the mosquito larvae. They will even become cannibalistic if a tadpole dies. The only con is that you’ll have lots of frog buddies at night croaking.
Let me help you with the mosquito problem, my fiancé lives in the Philippines and the mosquitos were eating her up so I sent her some garlic gel tablets that I bought on Amazon. The mosquitos no longer bite her. The next thing you can do is put a small pump in your water tank, the mosquitos will not lay eggs in moving water. Just get a very small fractional hp. pump, you only want to disturb the water. You can also use mosquito dunks that float on top of the water and they are very effective. Let me know what rout you go and spread the word.
The reason why people use guppies are because they're cheap (people will give them away), reproduce fast (it's why people give them away) and they're hardy. They can tolerate the acid rain better than goldfish. And you won't feel so bad if they belly up, cause they reproduce fast.
You need mint plants and citronella plants
Hi, there is another kind of small fish that should do much better, hardier and multiply quickly. I had them in My koi pond but dont know what they're called, sorry but You should be able to find , ask for mosquito eaters.
Are you thinking of guppies? They would be a better choice but we had trouble keeping them alive too. I think the water got too cold one night. We got the gold fish because they can live in colder water
these would grow to about 2" and were grayish, kinda cigar shaped, We put them everywhere and never seen a dead one, this was in Oregon so it got cold in winter.
Do you guys have an Instagram too? My instagram is more about my offgrid Hawaii experience so don’t be put off be my funny theme on youtube
in philippines they burn leaves at dusk, every one coughs i hated it
i have 3 hectors wifes land,,her friend has 1000, all not used ,sqautters run, need help
yep. Not a good idea, lemon grass cuts.
wash yourself with essential oils is probs the best u can do, steam some eucalyptus or somethin similar if u hav it make a lil steamer and have it goin twenfo, make it smell strong where you are basically
you're going to have a jungle of lemon grass if you spread them out that much :)
Goldfish don't handle the high acidic water guppies are much better suited or anything from the Amazon as Amazon fish naturally have high acid. Good luck guys.
Also 1 gold fish needs 1 gallon of water due to the amount of waste they produce.
One of the worst fish to heavily stock pile in small bodies of water.
Mix vinegar water n spary
If that was fish food floating on the surface of the water, you are overfeeding the fish.
You all are using the wrong kind of fish you all should use tilapia fish instead they are very though fish and they also provided you with alternative protein source when they grow .
Way too much food for 1 goldfish. 3 flakes a day is plenty. Over feeding them kills them.
🤦, You don't have a Mosquito problem and not a lack of fish problem, you have a lack of dragonflies problem! Promote dragonflies and you'd have no mosquito problem.
That's awesome. Have you had success keeping mosquitos at Bay with dragonflies? What do you do to promote dragonfly population growth?
Old school ;) dilute biodegradable dishsoap and spray it where ever you need to. I live in Haiku on Maui and the mosquitos used to be really bad here. I simply sprayed the water soap mixture where ever there was mud or standing water and problem solved. It does not bother other life as far as I've researched and actually helped a lot of plants grow better. My mix is1 to 10 parts. Good luck.
