DRONE CONFRONTATION: Cops called on drone pilot in SoCal for just doing his job. Watch what happens!

  • I was flying a drone capturing aerial photos of a construction site for a client when a neighbor approached in a hostile manner, using profanity and called the cops stating he felt uncomfortable and that I was somehow invading his privacy. I refused to leave before completing the job.
I am a Part 107 drone pilot and this flight was conducted under 14 CFR Part 107.
I was parked on a public street (NOT PRIVATE PROPERTY) and maintained visual line of sight of the drone as it flew above the construction site taking orthomosiac images of dirt.

To all those complaining about "reverse racism" and "playing the race card" ... as others have mentioned, he did not accuse anybody of being racist, he just wondered if the thing would have been different if he weren't Filipino ... and I would just say that I noticed two things during the video:
When asked on the phone for a description of the person, the guys first words were "He's an ASIAN guy ... ", which says a lot ... for the police coming, I think it would be more relevant size and clothes, as from a distance facial feature will not be that recognizable
Second ... to all those that say that the guy's concern was privacy ... it was not ... he was concerned about having this individual outside of his property ... when told that he could see the footage to address his privacy concerns, he clearly said that he didn't care, and then insisted about parking across the street ... and that the neighbors would not be happy either ... privacy was just a justification

The issue was about a drone not what color his skin was. Saying, "Just wondered if the thing would have been different if I weren't Filipino" is an insinuation of racism, no point trying to sugar coated. Describing someone by their ethnicity has nothing to do with racism. You've just got stop drinking the Kool-aid my friend.

    • @danielmunoz6866
      @danielmunoz6866 3 роки тому +66

I would probably agree with you, if not for the fact that the guy explicitly said he did not really care about what he was filming ... and he mostly insisted on parking on another location ... which does has nothing to do with the drone. ... he seems to be saying "I don't care what you're filming, as long as your are not standing here"...
Yes, wondering if it would have been different is insinuating that racism (or at least implicit bias) was part of the cause. Unfortunately, my friend ... this is a reality for minorities in this country ... I personally didn't have to worry before moving here (I'm from Chile, so I'm Latino, or Hispanic, whichever term you prefer)... I am mostly white, like a bit part of the Chilean and Argentinian population, but as soon I speak I worry about possible reactions. Luckily for me, I live in a very tolerant part of the country, but I have still noticed less-than-friendly faces (and heard annoying comments). It is not something I had experienced before, and it has changed how alert I am around other people. I cannot imagine how it is to grow and live your whole life feeling like that.
Regarding that "describing someone by their ethnicity" ... well, it's also common here ... there are several ethnicities in other countries, but in most places you would start describing somebody by height and clothes, probably hair length and color if it is particularly good for a description... I will tell you, while I was watching the video I had not noticed the Asian ethnicity until I heard the description given in the phone... Given that the title says "SoCal" I had thought he looked a little Latino, which didn't strike me like something relevant.

for the first issue you have..... asian latino white black... says alot on a description.. doesn't matter what you think, it is a proven fact that ethinicity goes a long way in identifying a person. it's not racist... and if you think it does... then you are the racist not them. your second point is spot on... the guy was just looking for anything to make the drone guy the bad guy.... which alot of racist do.... like you with your first issue.

I agree with you 100%, you are not claiming that the entire system is racist, you are claiming that this guy acted like one, which in my opinion also, he did, for sure. And you are right, I don’t think it would have been the same if he didn’t recognized you as a minority. I know that is a subjective judgment, but everyone is entitled to their opinion and mine is very close to yours

Secondly.. whenever anyone says they are 'uncomfortable' regarding this type of thing, I just don't care. My job isn't to make the world a better place overall and make someone comfortable. I AM about fair treatment and following the law.. but too much lately people resort to saying they aren't comfortable just to manipulate you into backing down in confrontations where they are clearly in the wrong.

When I originally came across this video, I thought it was someone flying a drone out in a public space and 'someone' deciding they didn't like that so called the police. But after watching we find out that the guy was HIRED by a company to do drone footage of THEIR OWN project.
What I wonder about in these situations, where the drone was hired to take video of the property, why anyone else would think they should not be allowed to do this or somehow it is illegal. If someone was taking pictures with a camera I can't see anyone calling the police.
NOTE: I do remember years ago that I, myself, did call the police in a sort of similar situation. It was near midnight and someone was taking photos of an ATM machine and the bank on Main Street. While I did not think what they were doing was illegal, I did have a fear that someone was 'casing the bank' or something like that since I could not think of any reason why someone would be taking photos of the ATM at a bank in the middle of the night. At the very least I wanted a report with the local police in case something did happen later.

@@thecompetentman5384 Great points. And I do believe you made the right call alerting the police to someone taking pictures of the ATM, especially at that hour. It may have been a legitimate job, but it would sure look suspicious to me as well.
I can fully understand someone questioning a drone pilot... they see a drone in the air, they've heard mixed press about what people are doing with drones, they can't tell where the camera is pointing, etc. What gets me though is instead of behaving civilly (until they have reason to act differently), many people seem to start out belligerently. Both the guy in this video and the guy I encountered during my real estate shoot started out with "get the f- out of here". And they both wound up feeling stupid after talking to the police.

I honestly don't know why some people think that every drone is spying on them. I actually had a lady try to kick my Mavic Air after I landed one time. She was sure that I was spying on her in her back yard witch backs up to the park I was flying in. I stayed really calm and was not going to be pulled in to an argument with her, witch seemed to piss her off even more. She called the park police on me. I showed them that I had written permission to fly there that day and I was doing everything above board. The police told her to go back to her house and not to harass me anymore. Good job keeping your cool and not giving that dude any satisfaction. 👍👍

The funny thing is, the karen calling the cops was the one breaking the law and in danger of getting arrested. It is a federal crime to take down an aircraft, either directly or indirectly, by interfearing with the pilot, causing a flight incident. This includes both manned and unmanned aircraft and drone pilots. Calling the cops to report a non-crime is also illegal and can get you arrested, but usually only if you lie. I was surprised a cop even showed up. They could have handled this over the phone.
