By default, drone flight is allowed in public parks and state parks. However, each park district has the authority to create orders that prohibit or regulate drone flight in their respective parks. This can take the form of absolute restriction, designated hours for drone flight, or a requirement for drone pilots to secure a permit prior to flying their drones.
An incident occurred on September 3, 2023 and the PA State police now have my Air 2S. I was filming a hyper lapse video of the sunset when I received a critical battery error (my own stupidity) and the drone made an emergency landing about 400 meters from home. I could see that it had landed on a neighbors property and waited until the next morning to go there and ask permission to search. When I did they told me that they had found it and called the police who came and took the drone. I was happy to hear that it was found and figured that all I needed to do was call, explain what happened, and go retrieve it from them. I made that call on September 4 and was told that the officer involved would have to call me back. I waited a few days without hearing a word then he finally contacted me. He informed me that I wouldn't be getting the drone back soon if at all because there had been other complaints, about drone flyers in my neighborhood. I explained that I could easily prove that there was no malicious intent on my part by showing him the flight logs. I also told him that everything I filmed would be on the memory card in the drone and, if he removed the battery, he would find a sticker with my name, address and phone number on it. He didn't want to hear that though and was very arrogant and downright rude when he told me that he was gathering everyone in the area who had complained and they were taking me to court. When I inquired about a timeline he said that he couldn't even start the 'investigation' until he gets off of 3rd shift. Its been a month and he still has not started the investigation. Since then I've done some research and found that civil forfeiture laws exist that allow them to keep property indefinitely even if there are never any charges or arrests made.
only comment i have on this is that your name and phone number must be prominently displayed on the drone per the FAA. Under the battery is not compliant
I have a drop mechanism for my mini 2. It can lift half a pound, I tested it, and if it gets stuck I can trigger the drop mechanism, that might have been better for you. They also make them for larger dji drones. They're pretty cool, and super cheap, they're just a servo with a receiver and a slide arm.
Really wow i never seen that before. where you get it from and whats it called? ive seen homemade stuff with servos on rc places so im assuming your using a seperate tx & rx? Do you have the folding landing gear on yours or no? My drone is super low to the ground and it cant really even land in grass without it chopping up the grass lol.. But thats cool, i wonder if they have that for the dji mini 3 pro.. That thing can stay up in some serious wind that would give my bigger drones a hard time, its incredible. I wonder how much weight it could pull, probably not much but the motors and esc seem strong. Ive heard great things about the mini 2 and i want to pick one up to have with the mini 3 or maybe ill go for a bigger dji drone like the air2/2s. But the Avata is really tempting to me plus then i could use the goggles and controller for a FPV drone..that i dont have yet lol.. FPV is also cool on a rc plane i like flying it from like the cockpit area where i have the camera mounted and it almost feels like a crappy graphics simulator with the analog fpv lol but it works and its pretty damn cheap.

The FAA regulates the airspace above public parks (as well as private property) but the park itself can still have regulations that prohibit taking off and landing drones from within the park.
The drone on the roof is a 3D Robotics Solo with Master Airscrew props, a Gopro Hero 4, and a very hard to find 3DR gimbal. Worth retrieving. These drones have a huge following still and the replacement parts pool is shrinking rapidly. These were $2k drones, pre DJI Phantom era, heavily touted as the first "smart drone". They were way ahead of their time. Used 3DR Solos can be found for $300 without the gimbal all day long, but fetch a premium with the gimbal and Hero 4 Black, the only camera that works with it plug and play for full function. New Solos can only be acquired through the 3DR $20K enterprise package, last I heard. Mine weighs in at almost 4 lbs all up with gear and flies great. Fast, nimble, and built rock solid. Still my favorite drone to fly on jobs with my Typhoon H a close 2nd.
You sure did, I got lucky and made the mailer list this year. Thanks Captain Drone for the Stickers. I like stickers, yes, I do. Good eye Hastatus, hope you have a great day.

I flew right in front of one. Lol. But , in the future, especially with remote id, there might be a fine involved. You seem real knowledgeable so share what you know so that I can stay in compliance. Sorry, but "Paula Blart" was more correct than you think. While the city can't regulate flying over something like a park (the FAA owns that) they can, and do regulate and can enforce where you takeoff and land. Nashville Metro Code: 13.24.400 - Aviation. "No person shall voluntarily bring, land or cause to descend or alight within or upon any park, any airplane, flying machine, balloon, parachute, or other apparatus for aviation. "Voluntarily," in this connection shall mean anything other than a forced landing. Any landing other than one caused by mechanical or structural failure of the aircraft or any of its parts shall be deemed to have been made voluntarily, and this shall include landings caused by error or oversight, negligence or failure to comply with FAA regulations or rulings. This section is to be construed in pari materia with Section 13.24.240 of this code. This section shall not apply to parachuting activities in conjunction with the Tennessee Women's Suffrage Centennial Celebration in Centennial Park."
A few years back I was taking video of a historic sight for a local park department and my Mavic 2 got stuck in a tree. I devised a very similar grappling hook solution with a stick and a roll of poop bags I found on premesis then sent my Air 2 up to retrieve the Mavic 2 pro. I hooked it perfectly, pulled the drone slightly upward and then... my air 2's engines errored out and did an emergency shut off sending the air 2 toppling to the ground and leaving the M2P stuck in the tree. The next day my work hired a tree trimmer to go retrieve the M2P, apparently they didn't quite understand the assignment because we basically paid them $400 to gently retrieve the drone with their ladders and they literally showed up on site and threw a rock at it knocking the drone from the tree.

Is there anywhere I can go and read about where I can fly and if somebody tells me random stuff like the security guard told you; how do I know I'm correct to fly there for sure?
Hey Ken great video man! I think you handled that situation in the beginning very well. I'm sure as much as you fly you get approached often and I have seen you be so polite to people that are just nasty to your face. Just politely informed them and keep doing as you are! 👍👍 Btw Barkley seems like a really good guy to have around in a critical situation, lol very calm and informing you the whole time. Great PRM "pilot Resource Management"
Pulled a friend's drone out of the top of a tree in a similar fashion. His drone fell to the ground once free. He ran to catch it and tripped over a tree root, and ended up in the ER for a broken collar bone. But... we got his drone back!
You are Soooo lucky that you didn't leave your P4P up there as well. I once designed a similar grapple..but added a velcro type break away device..just in case the object was too heavy to lift.
You could put the hook on a release and on a longer string. Hook it with the drone , release the hook, pull the string from the ground . Could have a trash bag a few feet up the string from the hook to act as a parachute.
What about a two drone rig? Two phantom, four pros with a string between them and the grappling hook section hangs from the middle of that string and you could have the two phantoms spread out for enough to be safe from each other. He would just have to have two pilots coordinating there drag and lift moves together. That way you’d have a double the lift. A master pilot like you can I want to be able to handle it… I’m thinking if you had them with say a 3 foot or 4 foot string between them with the grappling hook, hanging from the center, put both phantoms in tripod mode as soon as you’re up in the air, and very slowly maneuver it into place and drag and lift… I know I’m making it sound much simpler than it is but I could picture it. I think it could work.
I was thinking the exact same thing. Twice the power of having two phantom 4s. A strong string and a nice grappling hook. But I didn’t thing about the tripod mode. Thank u. Ken, how about it? I’ll volunteer to come down from Indiana with my phantom 4. Btw, I wonder if the “Master Airscrew” props would make any different in lifting power 🤔….? I also liked someone else’s idea on the Inspire 2.
That 3DR Solo was probably heavier than your Phantom 4, nice try though, you almost got it to the edge of the roof. Glad you were able to recover and not loose you P4 up there. And you even avoided another run in with the security guard. Great video, thanks for sharing.
maybe it's because spry, but imagine not scampering up a column like a squirrel to get your quad after crashing. INCREDIBLE recovery after the gargoyle smack. A+
Hi Ken, after watching your video this is my response to the situation with the park security guard. Centennial Park does have rules on their website regarding the takeoff & landing of drones being not allowed, they cannot however tell you that you can’t fly over the park since it is a public park. While some people have their opinions on how you should have handled the situation, my guess like anyone else’s is that she was probably told by her boss to tell you about the rules and that you couldn’t fly. Being polite and informative are the way to go with these interactions as a lot of security guards & police are ignorant to the actual FAA regulations & rules where I do take opportunities to inform them and be respectful. If they call the police, let them because most of time police will not do much other than ease the tension with the situation. I would like to hear your opinion and knowledge on this matter as you stated that you have been “flying there for years”. All the best to you & God bless you.

Need more lift! Time to break out the Inspire 2! Because why not try to save a $300 drone with a $5000 drone, right?

Remote drone cargo dropper .
$30 i think it was .
The drop a grappling hook or wire net on a fishing line leading down to a guy on the ground to do the actual muscle power needed idea . Point the camera down .
Amazom $ 29.99" top race remote cargo dropper for drone ."
Or object dropper .
They have a bunch of different kinds on thingyverse to 3d print I've made a few of them and they work great
Word is that the security guard is still waiting on an apology.
The FAA regulates the airspace above public parks (as well as private property) but the park itself can still have regulations that prohibit taking off and landing drones from within the park.
Why not just find the lady and say sorry for being curt. That's not like you, Ken.
We all love a self appointed hexpert 😂😂
I love going back and watching this old stuff
So you put in your log book, "Replaced props due to gargoyle encounter"?
8:04 I see a sticker from Captain Drone?!
You sure did, I got lucky and made the mailer list this year. Thanks Captain Drone for the Stickers. I like stickers, yes, I do. Good eye Hastatus, hope you have a great day.
Correct me if I’m wrong but there is perhaps an ounce of truth of what she said. I say this because I flew the Parthenon about 3 weeks ago and then I read later that they no longer allow drones in metro(Nashville) parks. I think it’s some goofy shit but I think that became something last year. I mean, I know that they can’t confiscate anything from you and the officers aren’t even aware of of this law. I flew right in front of one. Lol. But , in the future, especially with remote id, there might be a fine involved. You seem real knowledgeable so share what you know so that I can stay in compliance. P.s- she really didn’t seem to be angry or an antagonist at all. She just seemed to be doing what she was asked
Unless "they" are the FAA, it matters not.
@@KenHeron Metro Parks is not able to permit the use of drones in parks outside of designated flying areas for any purpose, including photography or filming. Metro Ordinances require that no person shall voluntarily bring, land or cause to descent or alight within or upon any park, any airplane, flying machine, balloon, parachute, or other apparatus for aviation (which includes drones). Drone flight is not allowed in Nashville Metro Parks except in three designated areas: Warner Park, Peeler Park, and Cane Ridge. A permit is necessary to fly drones in these designated areas.
Ref Code of Ordinances Sec 13.24.400"
Bloopers😂
Another Kentastic video. Your flying skills and some dang good luck saved the P4 😮. I love the outtakes. Thanks for sharing.
Loved it ken. Bro that was a close call. I almost had a heart attack 😮
"We'll wait for the people with the metal badges...". Thanks, Ken. Now I'm cleaning coffee off my keyboard! 🤣
🤣👍
I'm wettin' my jockeys here lol. "oh, well we don't need ta listen to you"
Sorry, but "Paula Blart" was more correct than you think.
He is correct
Kissed the Gargoyle and lived to brag about it.
I'm sure there will be a part 2. Ken felt bad for being short with that security guard. Everyone knows Ken is a good dude, so I'm sure he's going to have a talk with her. Afterall, she doesn't know anything about drones, and I'm sure was told by someone above her, who is also not informed. She was just doing her job. Ken knows it.
The security guard was right.
He's a "good dude" I think your standards are low.
i am always overly courteous with security… though the majority of us are civil you don’t know the amount of BS and disrespect these folks deal with on a daily basis
Enjoyed that!!! Thanks Ken and Co. !!!
I'm in California, the FAA has stated that State Parks have the authority to prohibit takeoffs, landing, and operation of drones (but not flyovers).
That 3DR is a heavy drone. Thats the first drone I ever had.
Hahaha imagine a good sunny day in the park " The Flying Drone Phone Snatcher " :D
Entertaining for sure 😲 enjoyed so much.
Like I said before. Legend.
Ahh , please thank the security officer, she was pretty cool.
Oh and please make another video trying to recover that drone so I get some closure.
Actually very disappointed in the way you handled that in the first minute when the lady walked up to you. You as a grown man acted childish and rude.
Ive used my phantom 3 4K to rescue a couple and I feel the adrenaline from here!
Again a nice video, but i think the rope must by longer :)
LOL great job my friend!!
Allied Unerversl has the worst security gaurds in the nation. They are completely inadequate.
I get your frustration Ken; I would be too but she was so nice and trying to what she thought was right.
I’ve flown there a few times before and I’ve never been told I can’t fly there before
Always a tense situation when approached. You did well sir!
I like seeing these drone rescue missions. You need different gizmos to retrieve these drones.
So, is that a cop car at 5:40 that y'all are resting your stuff on? Too funny.
Looks like his probably retired seeing the age of vid not allot or places still use em
Excellent Rescue Video. Thank You Ken, Barkley, and Keith.
You can’t beat the P4Pro. I agree Ken, it’s still my favourite as well.
Be nice. We have enough people with bad attitudes. Like your videos though. Keep up the great work.
grow a pair.
Glad it's still working!!!
I like how you guys place all your sh*t on top of the security car. 🤣😂
I like how they used cop/security car to put all gear
Hey Bud , I’m new to the drone scene . Can you tell me the cheapest and best , gimble , gps , obstacle avoidance unit to get ?
You could put the hook on a release and on a longer string. Hook it with the drone , release the hook, pull the string from the ground . Could have a trash bag a few feet up the string from the hook to act as a parachute.
What about a two drone rig? Two phantom, four pros with a string between them and the grappling hook section hangs from the middle of that string and you could have the two phantoms spread out for enough to be safe from each other. He would just have to have two pilots coordinating there drag and lift moves together. That way you’d have a double the lift. A master pilot like you can I want to be able to handle it…
I’m thinking if you had them with say a 3 foot or 4 foot string between them with the grappling hook, hanging from the center, put both phantoms in tripod mode as soon as you’re up in the air, and very slowly maneuver it into place and drag and lift… I know I’m making it sound much simpler than it is but I could picture it.
It will great to see if the 3DR solo drone fell from the building
I can't believe that drone is 3LB I wonder how good it flew. Great Vid Ken..
Ken you are one lucky man.....I was yelling at the Video .....NO NO NO PULL UP PULL UP.....I almost had a heart attack. I also have a Phantom 4 Pro.
Educate them Ken lol.
Get em Ken. Lol. Smooooooooth
You could try hooking a line that is connected the the ground to it and then pulling the line from the ground.
More horsepower! Send it to a TUNER!
@3:00 was that the security guards drone sneaking up behind you?
Another day, another Mall cop dealt with.
That 3DR Solo was probably heavier than your Phantom 4, nice try though, you almost got it to the edge of the roof. Glad you were able to recover and not loose you P4 up there. And you even avoided another run in with the security guard. Great video, thanks for sharing.
Ken you need the release system . So you can drag and drop.
Would it help if I dug out my solo and weigh it as equipped?
brilliant video as always, do you stilll have the inspire 2? that can lift about 2kg (4.7 pounds)
Wow… that’s an old 3DR solo from back in the day.
Yes, it's been up on the roof for a long time.
This is why I swear by prop guards
maybe it's because spry, but imagine not scampering up a column like a squirrel to get your quad after crashing. INCREDIBLE recovery after the gargoyle smack. A+
I literally ate there. I always look for down-and-out cafes when traveling for work
Great Video as always !
that's a phantom 4 or 4 pro drone you are using and those models have obstacle avoidance did you not have obstacle avoidance turned on?
Obstacle avoidance wouldn't have helped.
@@KenHeron why? were you in sport mode?
I love your Crown Vic. I used to own one and I miss her everyday!
