This is my final of the 4 caster videos. And boy did I go to war with this one, I had to resort to using Auto-Life just to keep Quina in combat. But with perseverance, I have claimed my final victory over Ozma in single combat.
==ENEMY BASIC STATS and ATTACKS==
Ozma, Level 99, 55,535 HP/9,999 MP
Classification: Aerial
Elements: Immune to Earth, Weak against Wind, Shadow and Holy
Ozma's spells are randomly chosen based on his turn number. There are other spells, but I am covering the ones that he can cast when you resist Holy/Shadow and have Reflect up:
Doomsday - Drops a giant meteor onto the battlefield. Deals Shadow damage to all players and Ozma takes damage. He will heal from the impact if you didn't do the Friendly Animal Sidequest. Casts it ever other turn on odd number. Will still cast if target is immune or absorbs Shadow as the AI still thinks it absorbs it's own attack.
LV4 Holy - Attacks all party members with Holy Damage provided the character has a level that is divisible by 4. Casts it every other turn on even number. Won't cast it if level is divisible by 4, absorption isn't checked. Casts it every other turn on even numbers.
Curse - Deals physical damage to all party members. Causes Confusion, Poison, Blind, Mini. Antibody and Clear Headed are recommended for status guards as Poison fights Regen and Confusion will prevent you from doing actions until you whack yourself. Casts it every other turn on the even numbers.
Flare Star - Deals damage equal to 50 x Level. 4600 in my case. It can be dodged with enough Magic Evasion. Casts it every other turn on odd number. For casters, this is a very dangerous spell if you are not at full health.
Meteor - Deals random damage (calculated against each party member individually on impact) to each party member by Base x Random number between 1 times (Caster Level + Caster Magic) - 1. Accuracy equals Spirit + (Level / 2), however, this check is bypassed as the accuracy is 104 in Ozma's favor. Casts it every other turn on the odd number
Curaga - Heals a large portion of Ozma's HP. Casts it every other turn on the even numbers if HP falls below 50% or as a counter.
Berserk - Causes a character to go Berserk. But with Reflect, it won't work on Freya.

Equips: Gastro Fork, Holy Miter, N-Kai Armlet, Robe of Lords, Pumice Piece
Active Skills: Auto Reflect, Haste and Regen, Clear Headed, Antibody, Half MP
Speed: 25
Strength: 61
Magic: 68
Spirit: 44
Attack: 77
Defense: 48
Evade: 32
Magic Defense: 45
Magic Evade: 0
Frog Drop - Deals damage equal to Quina's Level x # of Frogs captured. You need to catch at least 109 Frogs for it to deal 9999 at 92.
White Wind - Restores HP. The healing value is equal to 1/3 of Quina's Maximum HP. It might not seem much, but with Ozma's hard hitting attacks, any edge can help me.
Auto-Life - Adds Auto-Life. If Quina's HP to 0, Quina will come back up with 1 HP. Although one can Limit Glove spam through this, Ozma may end up destroying Quina the next turn.
====STRATEGY====
I made him/her 92 over 84. S/he keeps the LV4 Holy targeting, to reduce the odds of Curse being cast. The main damage is dished out through Frog Drop, but I had to resort to all kinds of crazy methods to survive the next hit from stalling animations to an Elixir. The reason for this is Quina has the worst Base Spirit and Speed and this greatly influences Auto-Regen and turns. I tried the best I could to upgrade the stats throughout the game.
====OVERALL====
Quina's only hope of damage is through a 9999 Frog Drop or the 1 HP Limit Glove strategy. But with the aid of Auto-Life, you can ensure you stay in combat. Unless Ozma smites Quina with Meteor and starts the next turn casting Curse. Luckily, Frog Drop and Limit Glove both deal damage while ignoring Mini.
Quina is the most magically versatile character in FF9. LOve QUINA

I wish that the Burmecians and Qu had more appearances in Final Fantasy, there is so much potential with those two races.

Quina will always be my favorite blue mage in any FF game so far.
She was the best blue mage ever.
She's probably, by far, the most useful Blue Mage ever. In most games Blue Mages are just good for a certain fight and then never gets used at all. Quina is useful from start to finish, really good Blue Magic ranging from support, utility, and straight up 9999 damage nuke. Also great character and design!

The special effectsin this game are the most exaggerated ever. Casting meteor, flare, holy, doomsday, very powerful spells, do alot of damage but the whole cinema building up to seeing the dmg text. Really makes you feel powerful
To this day, I think Supernova summon is by far the most creepy and destructive summon in Final Fantasy. Of course the damage is a joke. But the implication of Sephiroth destroying an entire Solar system in order to kill you is the stuff of nightmares.
And they get taken out by Frog Drop! Agreed, and the way the boss music theme swells whilst Flare Star is cast is sublime. I really miss the sound design of the PS1 era.
Tô this day, even with 16 different main games, they still haven't made a Meteor spell better than FF9
I like this game enough I’ve bought it on 3 systems to support it.. hope that we will get a remake of it like FF7

I had just always assumed Ozma would only check party members that are alive for shadow absorption when checking to cast Doomsday or not. That's a good workaround.
theres also a nice trick that slightly helps you with the fight, wait till your entire party's atb fills, then open fire at the jawbreaker.
That was clutch when he used doomsday while you were trying to recast autolife.
9.999 damage frog drop
Was always alittle disappointed that there was no second form of this boss that appeared after you broke his outside shell.
Broadcasting standards. Your idea is cool yet the developers do not like creating unbeatable bosses. Should the next phase be harder or easier than the first?
quina is labeled genderless but the game treats it as male

I replayed this a few years ago and this dude destroyed me. Strange thing is that I beat him in one try as a kid when the game came out. I've gotten dumber or something.
That is the RNG of this boss for ya. Meteor has some really fucked up math that can either spell your doom or shrug it off as if it was nothing.
The lowest damage this boss did was ~200 damage. Eiko got hit with a 220 shot.

Exactly the same! I defeated this guy as a kid with a team far to maxed out, and now, i cant do it again 20 years later x)
Might be like ff8 system where the AI levels along with you so its harder the more you grind out levels

I dont know why but ff9 is the best final fantasy for me.
I have a love hate relationship with ff9, its my favourite but its also the ff game that I have least memory of battles just because its so dialogue/“cut scene” heavy, I remember ff13 battles more and I’ve only played that once
Queen is one of the best characters in the game if you keep him/her leveled and up to date with the blue magic….you gotta love those blue mages they usually are OP

@@joshb4230 You can't reflect Meteor, but you can use Vivi or Amarant to Counter Magic with it
i beat ozma in ff9 ps1 by cheating ...i open the ps1 disc tray whenever he casted his magic so my party could regen before we take damage

That... was surprisingly easy. I know Ozma attacks every time you do. Never thought to just have one character that can cause auto-life on it and then let it do half of the damage to itself while I barely need to heal.
Not quite right. When you queue a command his ATB automatically fills and takes priority over yours. If your queue your commands DURING his attack animation, then they all enter queue and his next ATB goes at the end of the queue...so if you're fast you can queue your entire teams commands to avoid him getting extra turns.
I don't recall Ozma being able to use Flare Star
Him and Kuja use it. You must have gotten a run where he never used it.
We need an Ozma match in the Carnival in FFXIV.

Not as bad as you think. Memoria and Level Up help immensely. The real challenge is knowing how the stat system works

That was awesome. I'm a little confused though - Ozma casts meteor and you select auto-life during the cutscene. Should you technically be dead and auto-life worked as if you managed to get your turn in before meteor?
@Diamond Dust: The reason I issued my commands like that is because if you spam actions, Ozma counters each time unless you issue them in batches. You execute them during Ozma's attacks to ensure minimal counters of Curaga or Berserk. However, the first Meteor only did 4k to me and didn't kill me... this allowed Auto-Life to be cast after the spell was done and it raised me to 1 HP when I was struck with Meteor again minutes later. But it was a bit of dumb luck cause if I got nailed with Curse instead of him healing himself, it would have been Game Over

@@Hellwolf36 He technically doesn't "counter". His ATB works separate from your's. If you queue a command, he just gets his command earlier than normal kinda like an instant Haste. Also Battle Speed doesn't affect him either since, like I said, it works separately. Ozma, I believe has no counter attacks but Return Magic from Vivi and Amarant make short work of him when he uses Doomsday.

I mentioned it in a previous comment from someone who had the exact same thoughts you had. It's the way Ozma's AI operates and the random calculations with Meteor.

Well, Mini does cripple your Defenses, causing Curse to inflict more damage. The reason the other fights I don't really give a shit is either the character had an ability that ignores attack calculations and does set damage OR they had a large health pool to boot.

That is the reason I prefer the japanese names: Cure-Cura-Curaga, Blizzard-Blizzara-Blizzaga, Thunder-Thundara-Thundaga, Raise-Araise-Reraise, Regen, Quake-Quara-Quaraga, Gravity-Graviga, Haste-Hastega, Protect, Shell, Ultima, etc
I finished this game twice but i never encountered this marble. Hmmm
You have to do the Chocobo hot and cold side quest in order to get a way to fight ozma. Once you enter into the Chocobo Forest, you have to get all of the chocographs which allows your Chocobo to go from running on land, to sea, to mountains, to eventually flying in air. Once you do that, you go to a special land that is above Terra and in that land on that board is where you fight ozma
@@shioriryukaze It is also recommended you finish the Friendly Animals sidequest. This allows Ozma to be reached by melee attacks and removes his absorption to Doomsday.

Yo Quina was my favorite character in FF9
Personally, I like Quina for things like this, but general gameplay I prefer having Vivi and Eiko or Garnet around for Magi.
Yeah I had a hard time choosing between Vivi, Garnet, Eiko and Quina but went with Quina as my full time mage. Never understood that whole Level 3 def less and Level 4 holy hahahaha. Matra magic was so dumb I dont think anyone uses that but in a way I guess it helps to “eat” an enemy. By the way have you gotten the jump rope trophy? I swear they did that just to piss us off

I still want to see a challenge where Ozma begins the match with Meteor and then Curse. All these challenges avoid it like the plague. Ozma is pretty much unbeatable if it wants to start off with those two attacks. Just saying, I've yet to see it.
Because there is a chance Meteor can smite you in 1 strike. If you are under Auto-Life, even with 50 Spirit and high HP, you will get smoked next turn by Curse as you cannot regen 2000+ HP in time. The only way out of this bubble is if you are lucky with Eiko and get Rebirth Flame after Curse smokes you.
This is why Ozma is on DarkKefkas (YT) list as the hardest boss in all Final Fantasy. Sometimes, no matter what, he wins. He's bad ass in my mind for having this quality.

I remember when it took him 20 game overs to slay Neo-Shinryu in FF5 but I have a video where I did it in 5 minutes knowing what I was doing with Mix. The guy also comes off as annoying, self-righteous prick at times and was a motivational factor that caused me to do Gau FF6 (he was criticized for using the same cookie cutter stuff and one guy asked him a suggestion and he responded with (paraphrasing) "noobs do what other people do and I do what I want and get away with it"... all while he beats Kaiser Dragon with Master Scroll Double Ultimas).

@@Hellwolf36 quina is famous for it's absurd r0andomness, which can make him/her hit very hard or absolutly miss the target (Technicly only his/her normal attack if i remember correctly). That'd why there is a running gag that quina misses alot.
