Most "perfect" speedrun basics are going from start to finish without saving or dying while performing optimally as you can. I stick to speedrunning simple games like clocktower 3. Can be done in 2-3 hours and not as much rng or as long.
Saving in this game, if you're on the world map, involves summoning a character who runs towards you, so you have to use the item and wait for him to show up, then go through his dialogue.
Even in a normal play though you will want to steal every chance you get, especially bosses since its not just the equipment's better stats but also the abilities they can teach too. Then later on you can combine old gear to make even stronger gear. Finally Zidanes ultimate attack powers up the more you steal successfully. HOLY SHIT DID NOT KNOW ABOUT NECRONS AI! that guy can be pure hell without any tricks and such, nice to see him get shut down so easily.

Or is it just to risky? Even just killing one or two gives so many early levels it's a massive power spike and I'm just curious as to if it's worth it to make up for risking being to low level thruout the game
Farming for levels in FF9 runs is generally not worth it because your damage scales up only very slightly by level.
