  • This week CDC published new research on long COVID symptoms. They claim that 20% of adults have symptoms that might relate to COVID infection, i.e. long COVID. What is the quality of this research on long COVID? Does this mean that COVID caused these long COVID symptoms? Long COVID is an important condition to research but is the CDC study good research? I review in this video.

This is a very courageous report. Dr. Moran flatly says that the CDC did a bad job with this study and that the reported numbers are incorrect on their face. I have three related comments: first, why did the CDC do such a poor job here? Was this something very tricky that anybody, even experts, might mess up? Shouldn't we be allowed an expectation of baseline competence? If I take a flight to Australia I don't want to hear that the plane landed in New Zealand due to a navigational error, could happen to anybody.
Second, I ask the obvious question, did they really mess up, or was this outcome in fact the purpose of the study? Somebody wisely (IMHO) said, and I paraphrase, "It's an outcome in search of a study."
Third, I ask whether long covid is (as) relevant to Omicron and to Omicron subvariants? Because covid is almost entirely Omicron today, worldwide. I suspect, due to its milder pathogenicity, that Omicron generally does not lead to long covid. It might depend on your definition of "long". In any case, if it does not, then are we in fact "tsk-tsking" about something that happened some time ago but does not happen so much anymore? Analogously, there is less point in stressing over commonplace public practices that took place in medieval times leading to bad outcomes when such practices are no longer commonplace today.
Are you reassured thinking it wasn't a lie, it was just an improperly conducted study followed by some affectionate finger-wagging? "Oh, you rascals should be more careful!" Myself, I would prefer it was a bare-faced lie. That is to say, I would prefer to think my doctors might be villains rather than incompetents, capische? AND HOW THE HECK DID WE GET HERE?
I think we are still being lied to; perhaps more so than ever, as authorities scramble to cover up their misdoings.

    • @dorkangel1076

If that was correct then there would be no long covid cases in at least the first year of covid since there were no vaccines before then and when there were it took months for the vaccination programs to reach the majority of the population. Also the spike proteins from the vaccines don't stay in your body very long (a few weeks at most) and catching covid comes with its own set of much more virulent spike proteins. "Proper physician evaluation!" in New Zealand is a sick joke. Here we do not see out doctors, unless they request to see us. The traditional consult has been replaced with a telephone call. So he won't do blood pressures, hear our hears or lungs. They won't see if or how we can walk. But they are good at producing repeat prescriptions - after all we cannot have the pharmaceutical industry suffering - can we!! They are of course still expert in charging full consult prices. In rare cases that the doctor decided during the phone-call that he might want to see you - then that "in person" appointment you asked for at the beginning nalso gets fully charged - we pay twice. So how many of us come to think that we do better ignoring the doctors and opting to live as stress free as we can while saving our money. After all either-way, see or not-see the doctor, our prognosis is the same. obviously, the "Doctor / patient relationship" is a thing of the past. Naturally many stressed patients get upset when medical care is not appropriately available - so the stressing patients voices often get raised - so reception responds ignorantly and calls security. I like your videos. In watching them, I am attewnding to my health concerns and bypassing my useless uninformative GP. You know what ever condition, he sais, my situation is "NORMAL". Everything is NORMAL. Leaves me wondering, am I NORMAL for a teenager or a septagenarian. Am I normal for a fit perrson or someone at deaths door. My point is that what he sais is not useful or informative at all ever. So I rate what I find online as more useful and informative - further it assists anyone who has an interest in taking control of their health. Lastly, I have just had Covid-19. I not tested to find out which version it was. I have not had any communication from my doctor or his office - not interested when I followed government instruction to inform the medical centre. I fact they were ignorant sarcastic and nasty to deal with.

Thanks for this video. In case of interest: I haven’t had Covid-19 yet, but I have previously had three prolonged bouts of post-viral fatigue following respiratory viral infections. I was evaluated in depth for these on two separate occasions and each time what was abnormal was my neuroendocrine function. I had low morning cortisol and little adrenal response to a Synacthen test. My thyroid function fluctuated rapidly with low thyroxine levels but normal TSH. I also had abnormal autonomic nervous system function with PoTS. I did eventually recover with rest but it took over a year on each occasion.

I’m a physician and have had long Covid for 2 years. Mine is neurologic. It’s real and it’s miserable. Fortunately I never got the brain fog nor the POTS. At first it was more like I had a pheochromocytoma, but that hyper adrenal type stuff abated, and it settled in to a chronic weird headed feeling. It almost remitted fully, but then a short bout of Omicron fired it back up. Take your patients seriously, but unfortunately there are no objective findings. It’s wickedly vexing.

At the beginning of the video, it was stated that people should see their doctors if experiencing COVID symptoms. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced reluctance from their doctors or medical provider to actually encourage medical exams or visits. My provider does everything it can to discourage me from actually seeing a doctor. If I've had concerns, I'm met with a phone tree with multiple questions, followed by an advice "nurse" whose main treatment suggestion is ibuprofen and fluids, and waiting a few weeks for symptoms to resolve. It's as if doctors no longer actually want to physically examine a patient to make a diagnosis.

After 18 months of having a very mild covid I took my only dose of pfizer and a week later these symptoms disappeared. Earlier I had taken two doses of Astrazeneca and the symptoms had not gone away. Thanks for your explanations. 20% sounds way too high. Also note that this study defines Long Covid-19 as: "have reported persistent symptoms, or the onset of long-term symptoms, ≥4 weeks after acute COVID-19". 4 weeks is way too short to call this Long Covid-19. Marc, as I've said in some of my videos we need evidence-based data to guide us otherwise there's a vacuum of knowledge and politics will quickly fill that. It's unfortunate that there's a lot of knowingly poorly done observational research That is parroted by the media and even physicians without any kind of critical appraisal. I think it comes back to the fact that critical medical appraisal of the literature needs to be well taught in medical school and carried through into residency so the busy physicians don't just read the abstract of the study and accept its conclusion. I was fortunate to be taught by Dr. David Sackett and Dr. Gordon Guyatt who pioneered evidence-based medicine.

This doesn't surprise me. I suspected a good proportion of long COVID might be phycological. The fact that having a pre-existing anxiety disorder and being female (women are at greater risk of anxiety) greatly increases this risk, supports this hypothesis. I was accused of being dismissive of people's suffering, when I proposed this theory on an other channel, but that wasn't my intention. Suffering is real, even if it's psychiatric in nature.

Dr. Moran, it has been said, “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can only be maintained for such time as the state can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie.
It thus becomes vitally important for the state to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the state.”

Long covid is a myth. We are all different. I have had friends that would run to the doctor for the simplest of things. Some of these friends are no longer with us and I believe that is because of their doctors intervention and the fact that their conditions worsened after consultation. Just my assumption, I can't prove anything but I can say that other friends who chose not to see a doctor and took care of themselves are still with us and all good. Long covid in my opinion is simply those who had the vaccine and can't understand why they don't yet feel what they would consider "normal", whatever that is. I wish I had never heard the word covid and doubt we will ever be able use the term normal ever again 😕
